Goal: Micros to 5/10 Reg In 2-3 Years Goal: Micros to 5/10 Reg In 2-3 Years

Brief Background

  • Started playing in 2011 with 1/1 & 1/2 underground games in NYC
  • Was not good at all and job was primary focus then so didn't take it too seriously. But loved the game.
  • Moved back to home country (India) to start business in 2012.
  • Didn't have much time for poker, so never played it except on vacations in locations which had casinos or occasional home games.
  • Around 2016, my long standing health issue starts to make working difficult, have to step back and give up all business goals
  • Start looking at alternative ways to spend my free time.
  • There is no live poker where I live. So start playing online poker on Indian poker sites. Still not very good but falling back in love with the game.
  • Planning to move to Canada within 1 year which has a great opportunities for both live & online poker
  • On 11th August, I decide to work my way up to a live 5/10 player and set out the following goals

Goals/Plan
  • Use the 1 year time to moving to Canada to play online poker in India and grind up a bankroll ($4000-$6000) for 1/2 live poker.
  • Although I can take out $4000-$6000 comfortably from my life roll for this, I feel grinding it out will help me a lot in improving my game and building discipline - helping me as a I grind 1/2 to 5/10 live.
  • Plus, I don't have access to live poker for ~1 year so can't play live poker anyway.

Progress So Far
  • On 11th Aug 2018, I started the Micros to 5/10 Challenge and deposited 10BIs at equivalent of $3NL (lowest stake available on my site)
  • Won 40BIs at $3NL but got really lucky, ran 20BIs above EV.
  • Played the next stake (equivalent to $7.5NL) with a roll of 20BIs at that stake
  • Pretty much went busto, ran bad (10 BIs under EV after 3k hands but still breakeven) and then let it affect my game massively... went into complete spew mode and spewed my entire roll over 2-3 days of degen
  • On 19th September, had some real talk with myself and decided to get more disciplined, stop tilting & spewing and stop letting bad beats affect my game. "Restarted" the challenge from the beginning at $3NL with 10 BIs.
  • Also, made some other massive adjustments to my game - mostly, stopped blindly following advice in books & videos that I read/watched (no matter how credible the source was) and started playing my own game making my own judgement in various spots by reasoning using maths and sound logic on the most profitable move.
  • Since 19th Sept, I feel like my game has massively improved. Small sample sizes and all but I didn't really feel like I was playing well even when I was winning earlier and now I feel like I'm playing well even when I'm not winning.

Graphs

$3NL until 19th Sept (includes a few spewy sections at the end when I dropped from $7.5NL)

$7.5NL until 19th Sept

$3NL from 19th Sept onwards

Plan For Now

  • Grind $3NL until I have 50BIs in All-in Adjusted BB Won
  • Do the same (win 50 BIs) for every level above that, wait patiently instead of just starting to play the next level when my roll reaches 20BIs of that level
  • Don't tilt, don't spew... just continue playing correct poker

Thanks for reading guys. I'll update this thread when I encounter significant setbacks or reach important milestones.
