Re: The Gazzy Experience

Alright troops! Gonna be a long un, so strap in...

First things first, an absolutely massive thank you to everyone involved with the prop bet. From those giving us tags on Insta, to those that watched, the donations, my mods on twitch, my opponent Ben, absolutely everybody, it was genuinely a lot of fun and you're all legends

The graph...

Hand on heart I think my overall quality of play was really solid considering the circumstances. Now there was obbbbviously a lot of autopilot and some clear mistakes due to fatigue, but from 7k to 12k hands I ran utterly horrific, and lost many pots. I feared the worst at a couple of points, so to claw it back and only lose $450 is a huge win in my book. I also got about $300 in chests, so yeah, really pleased with making a comeback. You'll also notice that I played a lot less hands than Ben, I think it's because of the way I am on Twitch compared to the way he is (that's ofc not to say either of us are better or worse) i.e. I zoom in on tables and I type a LOT in twitch chat whereas ben responds to everyone with his voice and not by mashing his keyboard!

Gonna post some hands...

Some nobodies in Ben's chat were saying this was a terrible river call and 21 hours in when I was exhausted I was starting to believe them. Fortunately bbissick and martimc came to the rescue to tell me to stfu and stop listening to them and it was ok to call

my NLHE is super rusty but ya from villain's perspective isn't the 8 like the worst possible card to have here since we already know you don't have 86 or 98, so we just block bluffs and make it more likely you have value?

I've seen tons of gifts that are the result of people thinking really shallow about blockers, in this case "hey i have a card that has a diamond and it's close to the 6 and 9". Using blockers is like one of the new hot concepts that everyone has been talking about/trying to implement in their game and most are misapplying it badly

This, I think villain's reasoning is more related to the vodka shots he took earlier haha.

And yeah, while jamming we want to unblock FDs, range x oop in that spot is a good approach too after the x/r otf.

Hello friends. Still not much for me to update about, have been playing on unspeakable sites and have no graphs as such. Had a great start to the year but last 2 weeks have been gruesome. I am very close to writing up my 2018 yearly review, just one last thing to take care of and I'll get it all written out! It's not that exciting, but it's a great story to tell

The weekend just past there marked my 5 year anniversary of being a professional poker player. I have told this story a couple of times on stream but I don't think I've ever written it out properly before. It's a fun story and one I should probably be embarrassed to tell but I actually love this story so **** it, here we go...

Our tale begins in October 2013. My little sister's 18th birthday. I was working as a licensing officer for the Scottish Government. There are a lot of protected animals in Scotland and if you want to disturb them by building a house or that you need a licence. The job paid fairly well and I really liked it. I was ****ing brilliant at it and they let me wear what I want and listen to music as I worked. Anyway the night we celebrated my sister's birthday I went home early as I wasn't feeling great (I genuinely wasn't). I fired up a couple of tournaments on Stars and came 4th or 5th in one of my favourite tournaments, the $11 rebuy that starts at 9pm-ish. I won like $4k. Not sure if it still exists but I used to love playing it. I called my brother and the next day we had Vegas booked. My then girlfriend was really annoyed. She hated me playing poker (understandable, I was awful back then) and me winning lots of money and spunking it up the wall on what was effectively a gambling trip didn't sit well with her. Understandable in hindsight!

In the build up to Vegas I was playing 50nl deep tables thinking I was a reg. I would basically spend my evenings playing HU vs a guy called something like JohnnyBanana$, he had an avatar of the monkey from the Jungle Book and was really nice/polite to me whilst absolutely rinsing my bankroll. He'd be like "ahh, cooler, unlucky!" as I got JJ in pre for 250bbs etc haha. Anyway Vegas rolls around and I am absolutely busto. I sheepishly message my uncle and ask him if I can borrow £1,000. He is a legend of a guy and happily helped. Two days into a ten day Vegas trip and I have to message him again and ask for another £1,000. He's not overly happy about it but helps me out. 24 years old, bit of a lightweight, in Vegas, in a kilt, surrounded by blackjack and free alcohol, I burned through everything he sent me very quickly, and I'd do it all again.

Get back from Vegas and tell my gf that I am £2k in debt now and she's ****in raging. Understandable in hindsight! Anyway I pick up a second job working behind a bar and start to pay my ****, get through Christmas/NY etc. I remember working on NYE and thinking it was completely worth it coz Vegas was ****ing brilliant. Absolutely no regrets. My birthday is on 18th January and a few days before it my girlfriend asks me what I want for it. What did I ask her for? A new watch? Some new clothes? A trip? Nah, I asked her if I could borrow £200 off of her credit card to deposit onto PokerStars so I could have a 30bi bankroll for 10nl. She hits the ****in roof (once again, understandable in hindsight!!) and tells me if I ask her again she will end it with me. I work the Gazzy charm and eventually she caves in. I deposit £200 onto FullTilt (had self excluded for a month from Stars and there was a few days left of it). Back then £200 got me $325. After depositing I took a minute to compose myself. I smiled. I was back in the game. Being the degen that I was I loaded up 4x25z tables and told myself if I dropped to <$300 I would move to 10nl, this was just a wee shot to see if I could build the bankroll before getting to serious work. Fast forward 3 or 4 hours later and my bankroll is at around $750. I am absolutely flying, running ammmmmazingly well and destroying everyone in my path. I am absolutely delirious and quit only to go and play football in the evening. I get back and don't even shower, go straight back to the laptop and see that my balance is now around $800. I've now got a >30bi bankroll for 25nl!! (Don't ask me why but I thought 30bi was the holy grail for poker back then). Once again I decide that I would load up 4 tables of 50nl and if I lost the $50 and hit $750 again I would move back to 25nl and be comfortably rolled for that. Fast forward a couple of days and I'm sitting with $1600 or so and absolutely flying. I remember thinking I had cracked it, and it was all smooth sailing from here. I had spent a year or two trying to build a bankroll and beat the games and I was finally good enough (obviously this was a mental way of thinking, I was quite literally a fish on a heater).

I withdrew the money so I could deposit it onto Stars. My girlfriend was livid that I was keeping $1500 on a poker site and playing every night of the week. I spent the month of February grinding in the evenings and winning a little here and there. My boss at work was one of the best bosses I ever had and he was fascinated by it. He knew I'd won $4k in a tournament a few months prior so he perceived me to be this poker guru who won all the money in my spare time). I told him all about it and he encouraged me but told me to proceed with caution. At the start of March I gave notice at work. I had a £650/month flat I was renting (chunks for the north of Scotland), a £2k debt to my uncle, a girlfriend who I had to charm the ****in pants off to agree to let me go pro and, best of all, 30bi for 50nl. I had it all worked out. Was gonna make supernova and smash through bonuses to pay the bills. What could possibly go wrong?!

I gave 4 weeks notice at work. A week went by and everything was going okay. I called in sick one Monday so I could keep grinding (paid sick days for the ****ing win). I remember winning a fair bit of money that day. The next day instead of calling in sick again I emailed my boss (not the legend that encouraged me to play poker, someone just under him). I don't know why but I told her I wasn't actually sick the day before, but that I had broken up with my girlfriend over the weekend and as a result I was a total mess and needed another day. Five minutes after sending the email my phone started ringing. I answered it and it was the bird I had just emailed. She was absolutely raging and told me to stop being so dramatic and to get in to work to deal with the heavy workload. I remember at the time being outraged. How dare she speak to me like this and tell me I wasn't allowed to feel feelings after just breaking up with my long term partner. I was of course lying about it but she didn't know that! I told her I wasn't going in coz I couldn't stop crying and hung up. What I did next I absolutely 100% am not proud of, and let's be honest is deplorable, but it's part of the story so I'll include it. So I called in sick on the Monday, emailed in and had the argument on the Tuesday and first thing on Wednesday morning I phoned up my GP and booked an appointment for that day. I told him that I had depression and that I was having a really tough time at work and that it was leading to my feeling a lot of anxiety. Again I wanna stress I am not proud of this at all but I rattled off all these symptoms I found off the internet (stopping short of suicidal thoughts etc) and he was so nice to me. Talked to me for ages and eventually said that he would give me a sick line (basically he gave me a piece of paper that said I was too depressed to go to work but they had to keep paying me). I obv didn't tell him I was quitting in 3 weeks. I emailed my boss that day and she was fuuuuuuckkkkkinggggg raaaaaaaaggggiiiiiiinnnnggggggg. She couldn't do anything about it though.

A week later and we are in the middle of March. I get up as normal one day and fire up the laptop and start grinding. I proceed to run quite literally the worst I had ever run in my life for like 13 hours. I played far too long, I tilted and spewed on top of the runbad, and my bankroll was absolutely decimated. I managed to drag myself off the laptop and go to bed with <$200 in my account. I was absolutely devastated. I felt physically sick all night. I remember lying there just holding my sleeping girlfriend thinking the absolute worst. She was finally coming round to the idea of me being a full time poker player and had started to tell all her friends (who all hated me mainly coz I was playing poker) and her family and I had just absolutely ****ed it all up. I told myself I would get up and email my main boss and ask for a meeting with him and beg for forgiveness and ask to keep my job and pray for mercy from him. I caught a few hours sleep. I woke up the next day and opened up Stars. I didn't have enough to play four tables. I loaded up three and focused. I focused like I had never focused in my life. I played my heart out and every time I won 50bb at a table I would rathole and go again. I grinded my nuts off all day, giving it my absolute all. I sat there for hours and listened to AWOLNATION - Sail over and over and over again. For hours. That one song, on repeat. Every time I ratholed I said to myself "just keep going, just keep going, just keep going." I won back around $900 or so in just that one day. The relief I felt that night was unlike anything I had ever experienced in my life. We were back on track. My girlfriend never found out about the pain and suffering I went through that one night, holding her all night and fighting back tears at the sheer unfairness of all my dreams evaporating in the space of one session of poker. Whilst she could never know of the pain I went through that day and night, I couldn't directly share with her the feeling of utter elation and relief that swept through me when I undid the damage the next day.

At least I couldn't share my feelings with her via words. I did however take her straight into the bedroom when she got home from work and gave her the ride of her life.

                        Spoiler:

Five years and not out, here's to many many more

Just wanna add, it goes without saying that I recovered and grinded out a roll for myself thereafter!!

Hahahahaha now thereís the Gazzyb I know and love!

                        Quality story arkid.

Ok. You really wore a kilt in Vegas? Need pics to confirm imo. And was the poker world really $200 away from not having you around? What do you imagine happens if you bust your last <$200 on the second day instead of running it back up?

And I think you should go back to your 50bb ratholing strategy. That's not a bad idea...

                        Excellent story!!!
