LOL I'm an idiot, not cut off from Will Hill, I think they just don't accept bets overnight since they have no one on staff to authorize. Up $12109 so far in Vegas, most likely firing in the Phamous tournament again and betting big on Kansas.

Threw in 5100 on Kansas ML -340. Skipped the PH tourney, I was out kind of late last night and the idea of spending >10 hours at a poker table didn't feel great. I think this definitely means when I come out for the WSOP this summer I need to cut off almost all drinking and nightlife. Playing all day every day really tests your stamina if you're not used to it.

Can't win em all. I think I'm done with sports betting for the trip, the model loves Kentucky tomorrow but there is no way I am ever fading my alma mater. Let's go Tar Heels!!

What's your original investment for the algorithm?

Would you consider selling your algorithm? Or st least taking on investors?

Also have you ever tried PLO? I think you should try it.. if you're playing the pit you might as well play some high variance poker variant with some skill.

Original investment was probably less than $1000, just a great deal of research time. I do pay around $100/month for data feeds.

I would be open to offers for sure but I doubt I have the track record to get much for it. Taking on investors is something to consider down the line but I'm pretty sure that's a very serious undertaking from a legal perspective.

Definitely have it on the radar to get into PLO. I basically want to go wherever the fish are, and it seems like the edges can be a lot bigger in PLO these days.

ATM Limits

The ATM in the lobby of my company’s building only takes 30 bills at a time for deposits, so I kept looking over my shoulder to make sure no coworkers were staring at me as I jammed $16k worth of hundreds into it. I’m keeping the rest of it as a working bankroll. This Vegas trip was an unmitigated success.

I’ve already detailed the gambling from the trip. On a non-gambling note, I’ll go ahead and give a shout out to Carnevino where I had yet another amazing dinner with friends on Saturday night. Skip the steak there, it’s fairly average. Instead go for the lamb chops, possibly my favorite lamb I have ever had (to be fair I’m a relative rookie to lamb, I rarely ever order it at home). Carnevino and Cut are probably my 2 favorite restaurants on the strip.

Never thought it would be possible but I’m actually tired of gambling after these AC and Vegas trips. I’m in DC and wanted to grind at National Harbor this week, but instead have just been crashing in my hotel every night, I just don’t have the energy. I will probably hit the tables tomorrow night, but so far I’m really happy just chilling out.

On the way to Vegas I made hotel reservations for the WSOP. I’ve been lucky to work on some cool **** at work this year, so I don’t want to take off the whole summer for it. Rather I will be in Vegas from June 1-18, and will likely come back on July 9 to play the main event, pending not losing my ass on the first trip.

Only regret from the Vegas trip is my showing in the PH Goliath tournament, where I somehow drew the only table in the tournament with ~6 pros. Hand histories below.

Hands

HAND 1

50/100 in the Goliath, everyone has over 20k stacks.

PREFLOP: UTG+1 250, I call in CO with T8ss, SB 1075, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, I call

SB is a 30ish girl who seems like a reg. No reads on BB or UTG+1. I think this is a call the 2nd time around??

FLOP (4,300): JT8hh, SB bets 1100, BB raises to 3200, I call, SB calls

Hmmmm. 3bet and fold both seem really bad here. I don’t love SB’s overcall

TURN (13,900): offsuit A, checks around

With the overcaller, there’s no way I should be betting here, right?

RIVER (13,900): offsuit 3, BB bets 5500, I tank call, SB tank folds, BB shows J3 (no hearts)

Welp. I feel like everyone’s ranges get a lot weaker after turn checks. Still I dunno if I should have paid off here. What a crazy hand for BB to have. SB claims after the hand she folded KK.

HAND 2

75/150 at this point I think I have about 18k left. This happened right after hand 1. UTG+1 is girl from first hand and UTG+2 is the J3 guy

PREFLOP: UTG+1 400, UTG+2 calls, folded to me in BB I call with Q7cc.

Here we go again.

FLOP (1,275): KQ7hh, check to UTG+2, bets 550, I raise to 1600, UTG+1 calls, UTG+2 calls.

Obviously, I have UTG+2 pegged as a donk after hand 1, and plan on valuebetting pretty hard, until UTG+1 cold calls. Then I’m just confused.

TURN (6,075): 6 of hearts, I check, UTG+1 checks, UTG+2 2600, I call, UTG+1 calls.

Given the crazy action on the previous hand I feel like I can call at least one more bet here. The overcall is very bad news and I'm likely not putting another dime in on the river unless I boat up.

RIVER (13,875): offsuit 4. Checked to UTG+2 he bets 7k, I fold, UTG+1 calls. UTG+2 shows KThh, UTG+1 claims she had a smaller flush

This guy’s crazy play with J3 got him an extra 2600 from me, usually I’d muck to the turn bet. In an incredible turn of events, after this hand, UTG+2 turned into a giant nit and didn’t play any pots from then until I busted around 4 hours later. Sometimes I don’t understand poker.

I adapted my main strategy from Larry Connors' books. I took his RSI strategies and changed the parameters based on analysis of historical performance. Highly recommend his work, I think there's some edge to be had if you are OK with the inherent risk.

Online Poker Sucks Now

…or maybe it’s just ACR that sucks? Every time I fire in a $500ish deposit I end up regretting it later. The tournaments I like to play in the $20-100 range are seemingly all regs playing 23/17, and while I’m sure they all have some leaks, they’re relatively small compared to those of the live players I’m used to. Maybe this is a strange attitude to have, but playing poker against good players has no inherent appeal to me. The best part of poker is figuring out who the fish is, then coming up with the best possible gameplan to take their chips.

Speaking of reg-infested pools, I threw $200 on Fanduel for the Masters and yikes, that is no fun at all at the $100 level. Tons of name pros in my contest; I wouldn’t be surprised if my ROI in the event was something like -50%. I’m gonna grind out the signup bonus and then probably call it a career in DFS.

One quick plug to throw out, I read part 2 of chuckbass’s memoirs ( www.onceagambler.com ). Recommend heavily to anyone who loves poker. He’s the same age as me (30) and it’s super interesting to read the life experiences of someone I relate a lot to and who took a much more active role in the poker boom.

Up next for me is playing the America’s Poker Tour events at the Majestic Star in Indiana -- $200 event #1 this weekend, then most likely the $1100 main the weekend after. I’m feeling pressure to make sure this blog doesn’t peak early, but at the very least, I don’t think I have to worry about soft fields in these events.

Hands

HAND 1

Both hands are from small stakes ACR tournaments.

I think this is fine? I don’t think I can find a spot to pump the brakes at any point. Also, villain’s flop call is pretty bad, no?

No I haven't -- this is a great idea. The old Bovada games were pillow soft.

I'll do a full update probably Sunday or Monday after I bust (or ship?) America's Poker Tour event #2. In the meantime I want to publicly state before the playoffs begin in about 15 minutes that my next big sports gamble is to fade the Cavaliers hard. Here are the bets I got down, gogoogog:

$100 to win $412 on Indiana today
$300 to win $549 on field vs. Cavs to win the east
$300 to win $1725 on Celtics to win the east
$378 to win $3213 on Raptors to win the east
$322 to win $4589 on Wizards to win the east

Not sure if I should be happy the Cavs have looked like dog**** the first 2 games, or sad they junked 2 wins. Celts and Raps losing is definitely not good though. Let's go Wiz!

Sprinting Towards Vegas

Currently only 39 days until heading out for the WSOP. While I’m currently only planning to stay May 31-June 18, there’s a slight chance I’ll be in between jobs and actually get to stay the whole summer. Should know more within the next few weeks.

I’m prepping for some serious grinding. If I’m only there for 18 days, I’m probably gonna shoot for ~140 hours at the table. I’ll post my full planned schedule and Vegas goals for next time, but for now I’ve set some goals for the spring in order to get myself in top form for the summer: (1) 35 miles/week on the treadmill (or equivalent in spin classes—yes I do these from time to time, go ahead and call me a *****, I blame my girlfriend) (2) Limit intake of alcohol and carbs – not sure how I’m quantifying this yet (3) 40 hours of live cash games. Screw it, I’ll go ahead and put a $500 bounty in the form of donation to the ACLU if I don’t hit the goals 1 or 3.

The third one is gonna be interesting; I’ve been playing by this rule all year:

Quote:

to make it interesting I’m gonna jump around stakes, and play the highest stakes where I’ve booked 300 BBs worth of profit (in other words, I’ll start playing 1-2 but move up to 2-5 when I’ve booked $1500 in cumulative profit)
…and it would be nice to run hot and be able to start with 2/5 or even 5/10 in Vegas (I’m only up $443 now). While I wanna focus mostly on tourneys, it will be nice to skip the Rio lines with the Diamond card, and I also have a few ideas for how to find soft games elsewhere.

I skipped the America’s Poker Tour $1100 main event today even though their marketing ( www.twitter.com/AmericasPokerTV ) is...interesting, and seems to highlight a certain demographic that’s playing their event, that is usually very profitable to play against. I’m keeping my powder dry for Vegas and will play the Horseshoe weekly $215 tomorrow (then cash games) instead.

Yeah who knows how the Pirates swept that series. They looked pretty awful even before losing Marte. Glad you had fun at Wrigley though!

I consider the local tourneys pretty soft, though I probably don’t have a great sample size to compare against. In the $200-500 buyin range, you’ll have a max of about 2 players at your table playing anywhere close to GTO. There are a bunch of regs, but very few of them play well. The $1k-$1500 events draw some better players; they were slightly tougher than the $1500 WSOP events I’ve played, but with much better structures. Also, anecdotally I feel like the WSOP Circuit draws more touring grinders than other events, so those tend to be the toughest fields.

Hands

HAND 1

This is in APT Event #2, a $350 buyin which only got 16 runners including re-entries. When this hand starts there are 8 players left but re-entries are still open. I have around 25k at 300/600/75

PREFLOP: Folded to me on button and I make it 1400 with A9o. Eastern European guy who’s been playing LAG, drinking, and is definitely a funplayer calls. Forgot to note his stack but I think he had around 18k.

FLOP (3,700): A54 1 heart 2 clubs (I have no FDs). Checks around

I think standard is to bet this, but I really don’t want to play for stacks with this hand, and I believe this villain will put me to that test frequently. I do think I’m strong enough to call down 2 reasonably sized bullets on most runouts, and that’s how I envision this hand going a lot of the time.

TURN (3,700): K of hearts bringing a second FD. Villain says “I check one more time”. I bet 1,800 and villain calls.

RIVER (7,300): T of hearts. Villain donks 4k and I snap call. Villain shows QJdd.

Probably not as easy of a call as I thought it was at the time. Villain is probably good enough to do this with 2 pair, and he can certainly have flushes, though we can discount that due to the way he played the turn. Still, villain is super splashy and probably capable of floating the turn to rep air on the river. UL that he banged the 4 outer on us.

HAND 2

Same villain, who has busted, re-entered, and is now in a new seat. This is his first hand back at the table, we’re at 500/1k/100 and he has the starting stack of 10k. I have around 19k.

PREFLOP: 7 handed, villain makes it 2300 from UTG+1, I call in BB with 76cc.

I think fold is bad vs. this villain even though we’re super short. Close between a call & shove.

FLOP (5,800): AK7ss. I check, villain bets 2k, I shove for 7,700 total, villain tanks over 2 mins and calls with KJo.

Ehhh, well this was unorthodox on my part. At the time I thought villain has an extremely wide range (I still think this), and my bet could potentially fold better hands (88-QQ, maybe even some kings?), get called by worse (flush draws), and fold out hands which have equity against me in a spot where I like barely any turns. Don’t love the spot, but also tough for me to think of a better line (check/call would be my 2nd favorite play here).

TURN/RIVER (21,200): We don’t get there

Career first today, played on this electronic poker table at Woodbine in Toronto. Game was sick soft, turned $100 CAD into $634 in about 3.5 hours (a profit of $392 USD). These things are pretty cool in general, seems like a good option for casinos who don't want to invest in making a full poker room, or can't because of legal reasons.

Looks like the East is going chalk in the NBA, great outcome for me. Raptors gave Cleveland a really good run last year, let's hope they get there this time around.

Also only went 17 miles on treadmill last week so I'm seriously in makeup right now. 4 hours down and 36 to go on live cash game hours before Vegas (+$374 so far). Plan to play at Horsehoe on Sunday, Winstar in Oklahoma on Tuesday/Wednesday. Full update coming after I ship the Horseshoe Sunday tournament!

Vegas Vegas Vegas

29 days to Vegas and it’s safe to say that’s occupying most of the real estate in my mind.

Before we get to the interesting stuff—I ran (OK, I walked some) 33 miles this week and put in 4.5 hours at cash game tables. I need to put in 140 more miles and 35.5 more cash game hours before 5/31 to avoid paying the bounties I set for myself. I’m planning to get to Winstar tomorrow around 4 PM and play until about 12 or 1, so I should be able to put a dent in the latter.

Below is my schedule of all tournaments currently in my consideration set for Vegas (certainly won’t play all of these; won’t play the $10k HU unless a bunch of things break my way). I’ve decided that no matter what, I’m getting out of town on the 18th, I don’t think I can take more than 18 straight days of intense grinding. I want to go visit my parents at the Jersey Shore right after the 18th, would love to go to Europe for a few weeks, and will likely make it back to Vegas for the Main Event as long as I don’t run like ass in vegas the first time around.

Finally—I’ll talk about this more next time, but I’m very likely in my last weeks in Chicago. I’m waiting on a job offer which I should get this week, and after the WSOP you should be able to find me donking it up at Lucky Chances and M8trix in the Bay Area. Big tournaments in Chi every weekend between now and WSOP—would be so awesome to hit a score before I leave!

Hands

HAND 1

Both of these are from the $210 Horseshoe Sunday weekly, and both are preflop spots. This one, I think I feel good about? We are at 100/200/25, I have 14,600 and UTG+1 covers

PREFLOP: UTG+1 raises to 1400, UTG+2 goes all in for ~6k, I shove in the SB with AKo, UTG+1 calls. UTG+1 has AA, UTG+2 has 99

UTG+2 is an older guy who has been playing pretty spazzy. Even though his shove is big I think I’m pretty far ahead of his range. UTG+1 is a reg who I consider decent, but not a deep thinker. Also somewhat on the nitty side. I think I can get some big folds from him (JJ? Definitely TT) by shoving. Always feels weird getting 75 BBs in with AKo in such a soft field tournament but I feel good about this shove.

FLOP/TURN/RIVER (35,675): The doorcard is a K, and the river is another one. Ship it crucial.

HAND 2

This one is at 400/800/100. I have 29k and both villains cover. I’ve busted in similar spots a few times this year. I think I played it bad.

PREFLOP: I’m UTG with JJ and make it 2k, UTG+2 calls, MP makes it 7500, I tank shove, UTG+1 folds, MP calls with AA.

FLOP/TURN/RIVER (62,200): we don’t get there

UTG+2 is a passive, kind of loose old guy. MP is a 55ish guy, we’ve played one pot where I opened 77 UTG+1, he called, flop 9 high, I check he bets I call, turn runs out Q then A with a backdoor flush and it checks down, my 77 is good. So I guess that means he’s not a total nit?

I’m lost as to what to do vs. this field. Think the GTO option is definitely a 4bet, but the fact that I won’t get 3bet as much as I should in a $210 Sunday at the Horseshoe might make my shove pretty bad. I’m not even sure a fold is ridiculous here. Eager to hear any thoughts.
