Hi All

I graduated last year and have spent the last 9 months living in a Uni town, playing poker, hockey and partying. Unfortunately the latter two activities took priority over the former and my game has not progressed as much as I would have liked.

On the plus side, I have finally decided on a direction I would like to go in my life, at least in the short to medium term. I have become increasingly interested in investing, both in real estate and markets and have been doing significant reading on both subjects. However, having been lazy for the past 9 months I have not built up cash reserves, and in fact, still have a student loan outstanding.

This is where poker comes in. I have played on and off for the last 5 years, from lhe on party in the old days, to mass tabling 45mans on stars recently. I really have a desire to both grind hard for money, but also so study hard and move up in limits. This summer provides the perfect opportunity to achieve this, as I will have minimal distractions. I shall be starting at 25nlfr. By the end of August, I would like to be beating 100nlfr and at least plo100 at a decent rate. I have played hands up to these two limits before but have never played there for any volume of hands.

Short Term
1. Grind 25nl until I have clear off my short term debts. Time frame: end of June

2. Continue to grind 25nl until rolled for 50nl. Join a training site again, actively review sessions myself and start doing sweat sessions.
Simultaneously achieve the same for plo50 (while not optimal, working on two games rather then solely playing 1 will help stop boredom/ burnout). Time frame: earn enough from these two limits to pay of student debts at the end of July (ideally I would like to move up before end of July, but this will do as a target for now)

I plan to use this as a daily progress meter and have a lot more to add to this, but it will do for now.

Off to start the grind.

ps. wrt my rush thread, I really do this that it is possible and make come back to it at some point... happy to let it die for the mean time tho

Thanks man. 45s were fun... until some people started to realise that you dont need AQ+ to shove or call a shove.

Surprisingly I don't have it... thinking of sending a copy to my parents tho...!

Thoughts:

- When you were talking about your history, you mentioned playing lhe and 45man SNGs. And then you jump to wanting to play 25nl. What is wrong with grinding SNGs? What experience do you have with nlhe, and specifically 25nl (meaning total # of hands played, win rate, ect)?

- You plan on joining a training site AFTER playing a significant amount of hands. Why? If you are rolled for 25nl, you can certainly afford 1BI to join a training site if you think you'll get a lot out of it now.

Sit and goes (and 45 mans in particular) are not what they once were. The days of 35% at the 6s and $3 a game at $12s do not exist anymore for anyone playing a decent amount of tables. Also, there is not the potential for progress beyond 60s, and they are pretty damn monotonous. I've played >150,000 hands of 25nl this month at 4.8bb/100, and more in the past.

I understand your point about training sites, but they arn't just 1 bi at 25nl... cardrunners is $130 for 7 days, up to $360 for the year..?

Thanks for your thoughts

Cashed out all but $250 of my roll at the end of Sunday night. +$150 from plo10 on Monday, including RB (god bless 280fpp hypers).

Moving house in a couple of days, but after that I will be settled into 2 full months of grinding with minimal distractions (other than the pub and the golf course)

There are cheaper training sites out there with a lot of invaluable content. Do you use Holdem Manager? They have some add on applications that can help you improve your game for a decent price.

Good luck with your goals man. Sounds like you've got a pretty solid plan.

Don't waste your bankroll on training sites or a coach yet. Theres a lot of great information on 2+2 that will make you a very solid player up to small stakes or even mid stakes.

I would also put that degree of yours to use and start looking for a job. Its a much more reliable source of income to pay off your debts. You can still play poker as a hobby, you don't need to take any money out of your bankroll which will let you move up more quickly and start making decent bucks, and you can also inject some of your income into your roll.

GL!

Allow me to suggest you don't get any of Kiyosaki's other books. Although he outlines some interesting points, all his other books simply repeat these points over and over (and over and over.)

Investing is a lot like poker: working hard and grinding will get you far.

I have deuces cracked, costs me 279$ for 12 months.
If you want to achieve more than 25NL and 50NL I really recommend joining a trainingsite.

By the way: The mix of NLHE and PLO is not a great one. I did the same and it was pretty bad for my game. It's much easier to focus on 1 variant.
I choose for NLHE because the variance is lower. My game has improved so fast since I choose for NLHE.

Ugh, awful day yesterday. Dropped $400 trying to move up. $250 below ev as well as some standard coolers though so not too disheartened. Going to grind 25nl ONLY this week and maintain 8bb/100 over a lot of hands
