Well, I made a lot of pgc threads before, and stopped updating all of them. Last one was made while I was on tilt, and I was attempting to learn MTTs because I was sick of cash. On my third day, Internet disconnected for about one hour when I was on 2 fts, I forgot to recharge my backup internet so... tilt again.

I finally bought The Mental Game of Poker (both 1 and 2), and I´m pretty excited in reading it and seeing if Jared Tendler can offer any new insights. Anyway, I´m back to cash (I should never have quit them in the first place). I´m finally moving to 6-max because, as time passes, full ring becomes more and more boring. Don´t get me wrong: it is still way easier and, at 10NL, we can always find 1-2 juicy tables, but the nits are killing the game and making the grind almost unbearable, especially when I´m also running bad.

So the plan is: grind 4 tables of normal 6-max, put off-table work daily, win $$$$, move up and, hopefully, have fun while doing this. Volume goal will be 1500/2000 hands a day and play 5-6 days a week, which seems easy with 360 hands/hour. BR at $658.68, so I will play 10NL and move up to 16NL when I reach $1,000.00.

Making a backup of my old uNL FR database, with close to 1M hands. Won´t post the graphs, but you can see some of them in my older threads if curious. After this I will create a new database to start fresh.

Last, I will try to put some kind of lock on stars (I remember they had this feature a few years ago), so I cannot play anything higher than 16NL, any PLO, any HU, any zoom and any MTT/SNG. Hopefully they still have this, and I need it.

And that´s it. See you guys on the tables, good luck and hope everyone (including myself) runs good.

Gl!

I recently read the mental book volume 1 and found it very insightful as well as practical. Is volume 2 worth reading too?

Also would be interesting to hear from you what are the main takeaways after you’ve read both? For me I found the process model quite handy and helps me to stay in the zone especially when some early sign of tilt appears.

Good luck man. One comment scores me a bit. The one about nits killing the game. They might not be much fun, but I love playing against nits (and winning is a huge part of the fun in poker for me). So predictable, thus quite easy to make money off. Provided you have the patience and discipline needed. I’m sure that must be in Jared’s books. Please take that to heart. And keep us updated.

I will do a review here as soon as I read them. High expectations atm

Yes, you´re totally right here, and I think I´m not being very rational. Still, my winrate vs them is quite low (and I think that´s normal and should be expected). Being low, I should expect a lot of swings playing against them. Maybe there is a better approach in playing against them that should lead to better results, and I don´t know it yet. We´ll see

I will keep this thread alive and updated. Thanks man, and good luck to you too.

UPDATE 1

Ran good today. Always nice to start a new database while winning. It´s not my first time playing 6-max, but I think I still need a few days to fully transition to the new game after playing fullring for so long. Anyway, games seemed soft today, which helps a lot.

320 minutes played, but I´m not tired. Will review a few hands and keep reading The Mental Game of Poker. Good luck everyone!

Roughly 7bb/100 right? Based on the AllInEV line. Probably messing up the calculation in my head. Anyway, decent start. Keep it up!

Yeah, roughly that. But sample size is too small. I really want to keep running good to be able to jump the stakes before dec 31, but to be able to know my true winrate would require at least 100k hands, maybe even more than that. Hopefully I will be able to win the 34 BIs well before that date.

UPDATE 2

Well, the day finished with hero winning almost 2.5 bis in less than 100 hands and ending in the black, so it must be considered a good day, right?

That huge drop in my redline got me a little concerned. More than half of that was due to an aggrodonk sitting on my immediate left, and 3betting a lot. Tilted a little bit, but didn´t make any spewing after that, which is a good sign I suppose. Anyway, figured how to beat him (tightening my opening range, loosening my 4betting range, and since he was triple barreling anything I just x/c any board where I got at least middle pair). Coudn´t get anything, and the guy kept outdrawing the entire table over and over and just quit after winning a lot, so gg I guess. Idk if that strategy is the right one vs players like him, but seemed a logical approach while I was playing.

Anyone having problems posting HHs lately? Idk if it is a HEM2 problem or 2p2 but seems to be impossible to post hands (always getting an error message).

So, that´s it. Btw, 540 minutes played, so 9 hours. Never did that before. Must say it´s draining, but rewarding, esp when winning lol. Gl everyone!

UPDATE 3

The fish is on a heater.

Played fullring today. I was still tired from yesterday, and fullring is way easier, despite being boring. Also, my nitty tendencies fit very well at it. I still didn´t give up from learning 6-max, but will play fullring a few days. I made a lot of changes in my game lately (won´t talk strategy here, sorry guys), and think they will be enough to give me a high winrate and the best shot at reaching 25NL asap.

246 minutes played. Idk if I´ll be able to put big volume until saturday, since I have to meet my lawyer tomorrow, and I also need some repairs in the plumbing system of my appartment, but will see.

Gl everybody!

Fourth winning day in a row, and back to black in my overall 10NL graph (at least the green line, orange one still down).

Today:

10NL:

Redline too ugly, so I don´t want to show it here

I´m working actively on my game since I decided to make this new thread, and hopefully it will be way more effective than my last approach (which was close to 0 study and only playing), so I expect smaller swings on the negative side from now on. Getting rid of negative variance is, obviously, impossible.

One thing that I´m also trying to get rid from my mind is how I react to my own mistakes. I should not get mad with myself when I make mistakes, since I´m still a beginner at heart, and only now I´m working seriously to solve all my issues. Getting mad, tilted, after making mistakes, as if I´m not allowed to make them, is imo a sign of arrogance. Just accepting that I´m not perfect, will still make them from time to time, try to learn from the mistakes and move on since I can´t change the past, is a better approach in this game and in life in general. Still got an emotional reaction today, but felt way calmer after I said those words to myself, and, most important, I kept playing and booked a nice 429 minutes day.

Cheers and good luck to everyone.

Highly recommend the 4 levels of competence model mentioned in the mental game book. In short, making mistakes that you recognize and feel bad indicates areas where you are probably “consciously competent” but not yet “unconsciously competent” - which is a not-that-bad stage actually.

Yeah, It´s really interesting. I think the only way to be unconsciusly competent is by putting the hours at the tables. Until them, It´s necessary to make sure that I remain in control while I´m playing.

But even when we are unconsciously competent in something, we still can make mistakes occasionally, and having a bad reaction after them is not healthy. I´m still in the first part of the book, but one advice that I´ve taken already is to make a note and keep it close to me while I´m playing, when I´m aware that I screwed up:

Biggest winner, villain is a fish 75/7. The other seemed like a reg. 3bet or fold vs them seemed too conservative, and not the highest EV. Postflop I thoght I could allow one of them, hopefully the fish, to hang himself. Still not sure if it was too loose to defend the BB vs 2 and play oop, but seemed a good hand to do so on the right board. OTR, spr too low, so had to jam and hope he didn´t have a boat. Pairing the board was bad for me, and good for his range.

Ran bad yesterday, finished session with monster tilt and rsge (almost broke the entire office, managed to calm down a little bit and instead sent a lot of stupid chat on the tables (insulting comments against russians and ukranians, called pokerstars a scam site, told any player from Ukraine or Moldova is a bot cheating the system etc). Pretty bad stuff really, and if karma exists, I´m f***ed.

Anyway, will play again today (looooool) and post an update with the weekend results after finishing todays session. That is, if stars didn´t ban me bc of my behaviour, ofc.

BTW, lost 6.5 buy-ins, so nice to see that I still had the sense to shutdown the whole thing and go to bed before losing way more than that.

IRL stuff, today is election day here in Brazil. Far right vs far left guy (Workers party in general always seemed to be moderate, but we can´t be sure anymore). Far right seems to be winning, but we´ll probably have to choose again in a few weeks. I don´t really like (or respect) any of them, but the far right guy might be the better option (like, 50.5% vs 49.5%). But believe me, both are pretty bad, and this country will probably be %#$%&@ for another 4 years with any of them in office. I hope I´m wrong.

So, here is the graph for this weekend.

Runbad+tilt+card dead without tilt today=this graph. Not saying I played my A game today, or I´m a good player.

It blows my mind how some microgrinders manage to have positive redlines in a game where people usually hate to fold and love to go allin. Obv it´s very profitable when you are value betting the top of your range, and there are a few spots here and there where you can be very agressive, but both are, by definition, a very rare ocurrence, so I can´t understand, really. Maybe one day.

@PokerPlayingGamble and @ybyangben, yes, you guys are right, I think I´m improving (with a few setbacks here and there) and should be more grateful for that. Thank you!

Good luck everyone.

UPDATE 7

Made a few changes in my game, that led to the redline going upwards. Unfortunately, had a few setups today (KK<AK, KK vs AA, set of J´s vs set of Q´s) and made some bad calls vs fish tonight, so lost almost 6 BIs. Subscribed to RIO (Essential plan) and hopefully I'll be able to work better on my game and find what I´m still missing here.

I´m on a downswing atm. Playing bad also (unfortunately, swings still affect my mindset, either making me feel too confident during the ups, and totally insecure during the downs). Idk if this is a consequence of games getting tougher at all stakes, or still just random variance, but I´m experiencing way too much upswings and downswings lately, and this just f... my mindset. Can´t I get a more steady graph, like a few months ago?

Anyway, I know I said I would go broke at 10NL rather than moving down, but it just doesn´t seem very smart to keep playing a game that I can´t say for sure if I beat or not. Better work in my game in an environment where it is safer at least. So decided to move down to 5NL, play only full ring, work in my "poker lab" and plug a few leaks, beginning with preflop game. I fold too much against 3 bets, and get crazy when I fell they´re targeting me (especially when they are eastern europeans, which seems to be 80%+ of population atm ). Won´t say the exact nature of what I´m changing, but let´s say it´s gonna be harder for them to adjust to this.

Will keep updating this thread daily, but want to work only with volume goals (2-3k hands a day). Results only at the end of the month, and we'll see how the changes I´m making will work. Not looking at monetary results until then. I have more than 120 BIs for 5NL, and I don´t see myself being able to drop this in 21 days, so BR should be safe.

Goodluck everyone!
