Hi all,

My name is Tom. After crushing it in home games in school the past two years (winning in excess of 40bb/hr) I have decided that since school is boring anyway I am dropping out to make a living at poker.

I dropped out yesterday, and I will start my poker career tomorrow. I will start at $1/$2 NLHE. I figure a reasonable winrate for me there will be 15-20bb/hr.

My starting roll is $950, which I think should be enough to avoid going broke at the start. My goal will be to make $75,000 for the rest of this year.

I need to make $1,000/month to pay my rent plus buy food and ****.

I will post interesting hands and updates in this thread.

Wish me luck, not that I need it!

I should mention I also have additional $2,217 life roll in the bank to tide me over if the first month is tough.

-sigh- I cringe and shake my head whenever I hear someone dropping out of college and putting all their eggs into poker.

You're just on a heater mate. When your results regress to the mean, you will realize what an awful, awful life decision it was to drop out of college and play poker for a living.

I urge you to read this thread:

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/1...goals-1703641/

It has a lot of good advice and a stubborn, delusional OP who is playing severely under-rolled. Your situations are almost uncannily similar. Both of you will hit the wall hard at some point in the near future. It is only a matter of time.

Anyway, good luck!

This is all very unrealistic.

Go back and talk to your career counselor and instead of dropping out ask if you can take a semester or two off. If poker doesn't pan out then go back to school if it does then do the poker.

I dropped out of uni and quit my job too to go pro. So I'll be following this thread. I do want to point out a few things though:

1) 15-20bb/hr isn't attainable long-term at live games. The most you'll be able to win at $1/$2 is around $20/hr, and that's if you're in the top 5% of the player pool. You really want to be playing $2/$5 or higher to make it worthwhile.

2) $950 isn't even remotely close to the bankroll you'd need to grind $1/$2. At the bare minimum (and this is taking a massive risk that most people would think is stupid), you want 15 buyins for the stake you're playing, which is $3000 for $1/$2. Ideally, you want 40+ buyins. The good news is that, if you're lucky enough to go on an initial upswing, you might be able to survive playing games underrolled, but just be aware of the risk you're taking and the bullets you have to dodge.

3) If you want to make $75k in a year playing poker, you should aim to move up to $2/$5 as fast as possible. You simply won't earn this much at $1/$2, no matter how good you are or how much volume you put in.

Other than that, good luck with your challenge! I hope to see some hand histories and stories of you crushing at the tables.

This one screams troll to me. The arrogance, lolbankroll and expectations are a little too extreme.

Cannot be serious. I almost puked into my mouth a little bit while reading opening post.
And, it seems really funny that 6betme replied with actual truth, to this obvious troll post.

Just merge the two threads, or ban op gimmick troll. Honestly, both are not even outliers from their generation, probably average.

I laughed as soon as I read this because it's so true. Right, there are tons of people who will camp outside for 3 days in a tent and then pay $900+ for a new Iphone. It puts this guy's starting "roll" in great perspective.

I see the number $3,000 thrown around a lot for a good $1/2 starting roll, which I should have within the next 2-3 months tops. I already knew that sitting down to the games with 3-6 BI's was a terrible idea so I've been patient, played online, and studied the game extensively. Having the proper roll and being completely on my game should coincide nicely for my first live session.

lmfao, this has to be an OP troll... HAS TO BE. Then we have 6betme coming in with the wisdom bombs!!! He's pro OP, def take his advice and wisdom. Guaranteed success if you follow 6betme's path to holy poker matrimony, clippin' fish at 30 bb/hr!!!

lmfao @ all this... I'm sorry to both of you, I'm being an sarcastic as5hat, but my god... I can't help it. I wish you both massive success, but there's NOWAY either of you succeed, not a .05% chance you're still playing poker professionally 5 years from now. Sad, but true. I think 99% of the people agree with me???

I feel like I've had an epiphany in regards to poker and life from reading these PG&C threads lately. It's a GOLD mine of what NOT to do or how to think. I'm crushing life and poker is just a super small part of it right now. I've never felt better.

OP and 6betme - GL.

Played my first pro session today.

+$399
8 hr
Current winrate: $49.875 / hr

I don't think this is sustainable. Like I said trying to shoot for like $30-$35 / hr at $1/$2.

When I sat at the table I could tell right away it was a bunch of calling station fishes, mostly the elephant type player. Still I thought many of them were a little mousey and I resolved to run at least a couple big bluffs before the day was out.

A couple hrs into my session I get AcKc in early position.

Me (UTG + 1): ~$200
Button: covers
CO: covers
BB: covers

I raise to $5, get callers from the CO button and BB. Pot $21 going to flop.

Flop
3c4s5s

CO and button look weak. I don't have a read on BB but I'm sure he's a fish. I bet out for $22. CO folds, button stares me down and calls, BB folds

Pot is $65.

Turn
7h

This is my chance, I bet out $60. Button thinks and calls.

River
8s

I shove all in and button tanks... and finally folds! My first big bluff as a pro.

I don't like the river bluff without spade blockers. I could be more on board with this if you had AsKc though.

pgc is on fire right now

I imagine I would have been this delusional if I had found poker in my early 20's given some of the dumb **** I did WRT to poker in my early 30's during he moneymaker boom.

A 5 buy-in starting bankroll and 1 (or 2 I suppose depending on your living arrangements) month(s) emergency fund / life roll to go pro. No h8 intended, I did all sorts of dumb stuff in my 20's and 30's and am still trying to recover from it all in my 40's. Good luck, I hope you beat the odds and pull a Mike Wolfe but if you do please don't end up with his attitude when you 'make it'.

Now try to factor in:
1) Increased variance everytime you pull triple barrel bluffs.
2) Lower win rate, since 50bb/100 is unrealistic
