Day 4, WhiteRam

Despite being all rattled up by the fever and poker-induced dreams, I still manage to squeeze in 2h of negligible sleep...

...answer the ringing phone, put on some pants, some toothpaste on dem teeth, some deodorant and aftershave to mask the brief evening of sweaty nightmares and head out into the broad daylight, a barely functioning zombie on a mission...

...But it is Omaha 08 limit yo, a game where I can cruise control a B game, engage in somewhat normal conversations and still scoop in da monies

+1100$ in 8h live, +600$ in 2h online

Absolutely surprising - imho - that I find myself ahead of last year's challenge at this point, despite having less motivation Yes I have ran WAY better live (yet insanely worse online), but the bulk of the increase success comes from my steady improving game (studying da game, yo ).

White Ram, Day 5

Show up late for the tournament, make it through 65% of the field, bust out 1010 < QQ, drive back home, past out for literally 5 minutes before the phone announcing the 08 game interrupts my snoozing... Hop back in the van, cruise control 8h on a surprising very jolly table and book 300$ to put an end to this very looooonnnnnnnggggggg weekend Really happy with my mindframe that helped me make it through fever, bad variance, some deception and even an unhealthy dose of adversity disguised through the form of an utter douchebag at the table and still book a solid 3600$ in the process, because I am a mamafracking-dancing-with-the-old-lady-gangsta-yo

Synopsis of the WhiteRam Weekend

For the record, we are the only casino in a radius of 2150kms (nearest is in Prince George), so our little town of 1500 souls does bring a decent 150+ poker players during the WhiteRam weekend, which is quite sizeable considering not only the total population, but our normal venue of 3 poker tables (and usually just 1 table running, except on weekends). Within these 150 souls, there are about 3 pros and a handful of semi-pros (ex pros (part of the ole Brad Booth crew) now business-minded, most of which grinded the live tournament circuit), some marginally decent players, and a ton with an oversized ego, but no game whatsoever , but all of which rely heavily on variance, obviously Perhaps 2-3 of us can outweigh the short term variance of these 5 days by sheer skill, but for the most part, we take turns at running like God This weekend, it was Jake. Who not only went beyond any optimistic statistical expectations, but might of established an unbeatable record : he took down the first tournament (110 players), finished 6th in the second (125) and won the last tournament (87). Now how many years would be needed to repeat this feat, especially considering that perhaps only 80 players play all 3 tournaments yearly (I don't)...

Certain notes :

- Speaking of Jake, we couldn't of had a more likeable winner : the dude is humble as hell (he always answered by saying his run good was "lucky"), overtly friendly and just an average Joe (and very average player as well).

- There always has to be "that down on his luck dude" in every poker room, right That fellow that is scummy, sleazy, on perma-tilt, forsaken all the gods for his never ending poker and life run bad...

- It was great to see that even by 2am on Monday night, the 2 remaining tables were very pleasant, jolly, having a few laughs despite the fatigue and a tough financial weekend for some.

Well, it is now time to focus on online poker for the remainder of September, clear about 4k in RB and grind the live games on Fri-Sat and have a few dinners with friends before leaving town ; I have already booked my flights for Vancouver-Montreal-Vietnam and looking forward to this upcoming winter

Slow Rolling (rolling slow...)

Outside, the last vestiges of the summer are brushed aside, much like the Fall colours, fading away like an old painting...

Inside the casino, not many souls show up on this Friday evening... Us too, Dawsonites, are slowly dissipitating... It is as if we are buying into this whole hibernating thing... Or perhaps this village-wide flu has got the best of us... the seasonal changes, the darkness, the excessive amount of flops seen lately... Either way, 500bbs pots are unheard of tonight and the words "all in" are sparsely pronounced... +300$ in 5h live, +600$ in 16h online

The "I can do anything I want, even get away with murder vs a station" Hand of the Day :

After a couple of limpers, I make it 17$ in HJ with QJ ; BB and both limpers make the call.

Flop (69$)
A910

A tight player leads out for 20$, which we like, as it will determine the hand strength of all involved at a very affordable price ; MP makes the call, as do I.

Turn (129$)
A910 7

It gets checked through.

River (129$)
A910 7 6

BB tank-checks (mostly an Ax), MP leads out for 35$ and I take little time to raise it to 137$ with the nut str8 blockers, but mainly saying that I always have it on a 4 str8 and 3 flush board, right...
Spoiler:
BB tank-folds while MP snap-calls with 1010 ... fml

The Downward Spiral

Much to my immense distress, I have been witnessing the irrevocable downfall of a fellow grinder... Those massive leaks of his are draining the life out of him, both physically and emotionally... I mean, the dude use to be a very good player, dominated our game 6 years ago (before I took over the reigns ), but has gradually disintegrated into a shell of himself... And because we are such a tight nit community, his mounting ruin does not go unnoticed... Sometimes you want to reach out for the person, pronounce those magical words that might snap him out of that funk... But sometimes there is nothing you can do : inexorable events need to simply follow their course... -300$ live in 7h, +600 in 5h online

A Few Notes, 2016 Style Yo

This challenge is still 10 days from being over (and am now aiming to surpass last year's 35k, which was achieved in the same timeframe), but nevertheless want to look back at the 2015-16 differences so far.

- Table presence : I tend to be a really nice guy, talk a decent amount at the table (regardless if I know the people or not) and tend to get a friendly response in return. This said, my table-social-awareness has greatly improved, to the extent where I had some tourists off the cruise either thank me or shake my hand after dropping a few BIs directly to me Of course, I would oftentimes be the lone soul to show a genuine interest in their stories/backgrounds that only feeds the atmosphere with positive vibes yo, but feeds my curiosity as a writer (or a compassionate soul) ; I truly appreciate all personal stories, especially those pertaining to success stories (most of the tourists are, if not filthy rich, in the top 10% of the population financially). Also had a couple of people check to me and flat out tell me they had the nuts on the river which save me lots of monies

- Steady Inproving Game : As far as online pros go, I am probably in the bottom half as far as studying goes - albeit the top-bottom half . I do not take any pleasure in watching videos, running sims or flat out reading about situations That said, I do study on a semi-regular basis and have steadily polished my game. To the extent that while I have cut out on flashy A high hero-calls, for instance (and thus am left less often hanging with my dick in my hand on the river ), yet have increased my overall win rate by 6$/h (ran better live though). I know understand how bettering my game is a simple time-consuming-polishing-process in order to have foreseen insight into every single spot (and triple barreling until the end of times, obviously ).

- Lack of Motivation : Don't get me wrong, I still love the game and it is a great hobby one can have as a part-time gig while steadily scooping in 25-30k annually, am nonetheless looking into what is the next step in my life...

I will be keeping this thread alive after the challenge done, especially in grind-heavy months, like December, for instance.

Last of Days

You see folks, in these northern parts, frost is already showing up on the vehicles in the morning, temperatures are dropping to -5c and slowly finding their way towards double digits and the summits of the mountains have already received the hibernal blessing of snow , so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the casino is now shutting down its doors (will only be open on weekends for the next 3 weeks, then shut down completely for 3 months). Anyhow, tonight was the night that locals find their way to the casino, that these faces that I spot once a year gather (350 in all) for the last show of the season.

None would be surprised to know that the vibes are an absolute delight, the entertainment level, splendid, and the action on the tables, otherworldly :

+2100$ in 6h of 10-20 dealer's choice with kill button, yo

Got 5 more days of online grind (and clearing out about 4.5k in RB) before this challenge comes to an end. But in the meantime, here is an lol entertaining online hand.

The "I got position yo" Hand of the Day :

I open 45 to 3$ OTB ; SB defends.

Flop (7$)
AA2

After reg villain checks, I bet 2$ ; he raise me to 8$ and I make the call.

Turn (23$)
AA2 Q

Villain fires 16$ and I mean, I am not loving life and all, but might get paid off if the happens to hit...

River (55$)
AA2 Q Q

Villain checks and seemingly gives up on what can only be a draw, as an A never check to let me bluff, right... I throw in a smaller teaser of 12$
Spoiler:
villain snap-folds

While still trying to impress the old lady, gangsta-zombie style yo!!!

+1200$ online in 9h (was actually up 2k, but dropped some in the past couple of hours)

I will keep this thread alive even after the challenge is done for random poker updates, small challenges (probably will do a 10k challenge in December, perhaps...), movie updates (will have quite a few of dem in the wintertime yo ) and some digressions of sorts.

A little tango here, salsa there, swinging the old lady around and spinning her like no tomorrow is my mojo, yo

Or grabbing her from behind and laying an innocent hand on those massive, hum hum, of hers

Folks, do keep in mind that back in the day, the ole lady was nothing to snuffle at...

That a little amount of imagination can bring back the memories of that fine beauty, of those well rounded and innocently defined curves...

It does come as a surprise to yours truly that we find ourselves just over 1k ahead of last year's challenge

Thx for following folks In the meantime, here is what lies ahead of us (and ITT) pokerwise in 2016 :

- a home game tonight (1-2 uncapped buy-in)
- 4 days at the Riverrock in Vancouver grinding the 2-5 (both of which will probably be updated ITT). Followed by a meditation retreat for 12 days and then :
- At least 1 night of 2-5 at Le Casino de Montreal
- As far as online goes, I will take it really, really easy in October and November (focus more on writing my novel, snorkelling in Vietnam, playing tennis and spending time with my gf), with modest goals of 4-8k for those 2 months (6-10k if we include live).
- Then will be back on a 40-50h weekly grind in December and aiming at a 10k month.

Alright folks, thx for following my Dawson challenge

Mellow Groove

The last 3 weeks of the challenge were gruelling, to say the least... It wasn't really the sheer quantity of the volume that put me in zombieland - albeit, it was part of it -, but that nocive schedule of waking up in the evening and passing out at noon-1pm, simply put in comatose mood... To the extent that I past out for 12h yesterday, slept 10h the previous night, and opted to sway away from the grind for more mundane activities like, you know, going for a walk, sitting in a cafe or catching a movie This said, despite opting to skip out on Saturday evening's intended grind, I did put in 7h at the Riverrock. Here are a couple of HHs.

Note : the 500-1500$ game in Vancouver plays tighter than your 2-5 game in Alberta, but nonetheless doesn't really have any great players in it ; none are absolute-terrible-droolers, but all are simply bad (pardon my arrogance, but little if none of these players would beat 50z online...).

Hand 1 or "the art of running good" :

Villain is the same in both hands, is supposedly a pro, meaning one of 2 things : A) he is a semi-pro on a heater and will soon vanish B) and/or this game is soft as frack
Spoiler:
which it is
Spoiler:
lolive pokerz yo
Hero has been a nit-TAG and probably is perceived as tight-weak (I go out of my way to present myself as a rec player (I buy in for close to the minimum, ask fishy questions about the bad beat jackpot, about the rake, speak of the Canucks etc. all in my naturally thick French accent) to not only not appear threatening, but to engage in friendly banter and lighten the game up.

After 3 limpers, I complete OTB with A3 (I am vpping something like 50% in this spot, somewhere in the tune of 50/20); SB puts in the extra 3$ and BB checks back.

Flop (30$)
A33

Gin baby When it gets checked around, I have no choice but to do the same, alas...

Turn (30$)
A33 8

BB leads for 20$, 2 players make the call and I make a smallish raise to 70$, trying to keep some fds in there... It is a fishy raise, but in this case, the sizing doesn't matter, as a raise will always scream of 3x... Only BB makes the call.

River (210$)
A33 8 10

To my delight and somewhat astonishment, villain leads out for 100$. I tank for 30 seconds... He never has AA or 1010 and rarely has 88, so that leaves him with a missed fd or a 3x... I raise to 300$, villain tanks for 2 minutes before folding 103 face up
Spoiler:
I act incredibly surprise before showing the 3

Hand 2 or "the art of pouncing with a range advantage" :

After a couple of limpers, I make it 35$ with AJ ; BB and 1 of the limpers calls.

Flop (117$)
A82

I would quite often check such a dry board HU, but versus 2 players, I prefer to put in a small cbet to deny them some equity ; I bet 55$ and both of my opponents make the call.

Turn (282$)
A82 2

A beautiful card to continue barreling for value with plans of check-calling most rivers ; I bet 115$, only villain from the first hand makes the call.

River (512$)
A82 2 K

Bingo When villain checks, I quickly remind myself that he never has AA, KK or AK (but I do) and rarely holds a 2 (almost always has an Ax), so I fairly quickly shove for 435$
Spoiler:
villain shakes his head and reluctantly flashes an A before throwing his cards in the muck

In the Yukon? Yeah man, it is. Playing live down in Vancouver has magnified how I am skipping out on a better win rate by going to Asia and playing online But with a good amount of studying this winter and eventually moving more of my action to 200z, I will be ready for the 5-10 in Florida soon...

Rat Race

Well, that was fun : did the retreat for 12 days, got into a disagreement with management, got the F out, rushed back to Van with friends, hopped on the skytrain, left my luggage at the airport, made a loop to the Riverrock, made 400$ in 3h while leaving 2k on the tables in some neutral EV decisions (but always opting for the wrong flip-decision, obviously), got back to the airport, jumped on the plane, managed to get roughly 45 minutes of snoozing, landed in Montreal, had to use the public transportation because my sis came to get me 2 days in advance but not today , got lost in the process , got to my sis place, crashed for 3h before waking up to a cold shower ; oooooffff

I will say this though : I am quite happy that the online cash games have been quite challenging over the past couple of years, thus forcing me into some somewhat intensive studying, as it has made the live grind so, so easy God, these live pros have absolutely no knowledge of GTO postflop ranges whatsoever A few examples :

The nonsensical live pro's aggression lines hand of the day :

Villain is seemingly a live pro (and seems incrusted into the circle of pros in these parts) albeit is quite on the tight weak side (and I cannot imagine him playing professionally for much longer, barring a pocketless family fund ) and seems to not take much liking for yours truly ; you know some of dat "us regs do not want more pro outsiders immersing themselves in our house" kinda of attitude Anyhow, after a button straddle to 10$, hero opens with A4 in EP to 45$, button (villain in question) calls, and BB defends.

700$ effective, villains have me covered.

Flop (137$)
227

This is a flop where I would usually give up without the backdoor draw, but I do have plans to conquer the world, have a range advantage and plan on barrelling all broadway cards ; I fire 55$, only button makes the call.

Turn (247$)
227 4

Again, now that I have showdown value, I would usually check here, but I decide to go for a non-standard potential tripple barrel by firing 115$ ; villain contemplates raising (which seems very weak), but eventually makes the call.

River (477$)
227 4 2

I check fairly quickly and villain shoves for roughly 500$ effective. Hummmm, I mean, by all means, this is a fold, right... But something just smells fishy... Something about that tentative turn raise which made absolutely no sense... Something about villain's hatred big as the world for me (despite me being anything but socially engaging and civil around these parts)... Both of our ranges are also capped at 1010 or JJ here, and I guess he would shove those... After 2 minutes of tanking, I make the call
Spoiler:
villains shows up with the absolute J10 airball, which are effective blockers, by all means, but pretty sure he let his desire to put me to shame takeover

Hand 2 or Abusing villain's lack of checking range awareness

Villain has just literally sat down, is playing 1500$ behind and has this Laggy cockiness about him. Villain opens to 20$ in the CO (after button mucked out of turn) and I 3bet to 65$ JJ in the SB ; villain defends.

Flop (135$)
1093

Not having the J of makes it close in between checking and betting (and I usually bet as a default), but given that I block a ton of his str8 draws and that the board hits him fairly decently as far as sets go, I decide to check for deception (I am getting 2 streets of value at the most and I would rather rep an Ax sorta hand, which I also have more combos of) ; villain checks back somewhat uninterestingly.

Turn (135$)
1093 7

The turn deters me from going for value and I decide to check for added deception, plans of overbetting half of the rivers and to let villain potentially hang himself... Villain cooperates by instinctively (blind lolive pros aggression yo ) betting 105$ ; I Hollywood somewhat before making the deliberately non-deliberate call

River (345$)
1093 7 10

The unfortunate 10 rolls up on the river, a card that would deter any sane player from pursuing his world domination plans, but these 2-5 regs are quite the proponents of blind aggression ; I check, villain fires 135$, I snap-call
Spoiler:
he says "A high" before I roll over the overpair ; he looks back at the board, clearly perplexed by how I delayed my cbet for 2 streets, haha, work on your GTO game yo

I will be playing some 2-5 at the Casino de Montreal this week ; more on this later.

End of Days

I remember when waking up to the news of a rake increase, cancellation of rakeback or other calamities that the online pokerz has grown us accustomed to, was puke-worthy as frack... Today, it is the news that Unibet will reduce its RB by up to 33%, making that already titanic 6% capped at 3$ @ 100z now simply unfathomable A little disheartening, as I had grown fond of Unibet, yet part of me has become immune to this BS over time, I guess... Or perhaps I have accepted that I have about 1 year of online pokerz left in me (barring RIO saving online poker, as Unibet surely won't...). +400$ in 4h online

Schedules

Been enjoying the 4h daily grind which pretty much consists of 2-3 sessions of 1-2h each. Not too shabby, not too shabby at all Will be even better once in Asia, where the day will start off with some meditation, a walk by the beach, lunch, some writing in a cafe, tennis or some running, come back home, shower, grind for 2h, take a break, time with gf, movie, followed by another 2h of grind. Sounds just about right

It is pretty interesting how players from different platforms adopt a completely different style. In Vancouver, it was blind aggression with disregards to blockers and GTO ranges... On Party, the regs were more balanced, X/Ring turn at just the right frequency, for instance... On Unibet, it ressembles a bit live poker in a sense that because the players remain somewhat anonymous, they will play highly exploitative (cbetting at a higher clip, only X/R turn with value combos and bluffing with hands that have strong enough showdown value ).

Transits

Got a few hours to kill in the Hong Kong airport before embarking to my flight to HCMC then Da nang, so what better use of time then updating this thread, right

I only managed to grind 18h in my week in Montreal (booked 1.1k), but after my 12 day meditation retreat and roughly 4 weeks of somewhat of hiatus since the summer challenge, I feel the desire to grind again Not at an astronomical level, mind you, but have been thinking of aiming for 15k over the next 2 months...

Looking back at this summer, I feel that I have outperformed my expectations in numerous areas, notably :

- I surpassed 2015's challenge by a thousand or so.
- I beat the taxman, an issue that had been outstanding for the past 3 years.
- I took care of some small stuff like renewing my license to drive, dealing with my residency status, buying a van, opening a new bank account etc.

As far as this winter goes, I just booked a ticket for Myanmar in January (thus checking off one of the last South-East Asian items on my bucket list (the Trans-Siberean train can be done further down the road...) and do have the feeling that not only will I not be back in this part of the world in the near future, but that this is my last winter of favouring online pokerz over its live counterpart. It is hard to justify not to be playing some 2-5 and 5-10 in the US of A when my online winrate is almost half of what my live expected hourly would be... This said, I will be dedicating a lot of time to writing and studying, thus improving my game in the process

Anyhow, run good all

Long Ways Home

Blame it on the jet lag, a lack of a concrete schedule, on unfamiliarity, Asian air or a lack of rational oxygen, but within the lapse of the past 72h, I got my passport snatched from me (see travel blog for full details), got severely overpriced by a taxi, a motorbike and even had a bus bypass me when I was the lone potential passenger at the bus stop (yeah, right, a white guy taking the local bus in Vietnam... not! ).

* For the record, I am by no means a life nit-roll, but one simply feels hustled/had when he pays more than 2x the local price... Also, the difference in between the bus (0.50$) and a taxi (2$), is pretty lol, yet I prefer immensely the former, thus getting to share the space of my ride with locals instead of an empty back seat -1200$ in 8h ; am curiously really at ease with this small downswing, not even feeling an once of frustration folks

It seems as if I will be using the last 2 months of 2016 to extract the maximum out of RB, thus probably grinding 30-35h/weekly in November and something like 45h/week in December. Have also been gradually adding more tables of 200z, now that I seem to be more at peace (at least for the time being...) with an increased level of variance

This weekend will be dedicated to beach time, getting ink done on my back and eating out, so not much grind at the horizon until next week, yo

Run good folks

Contrived Lull

Unibet was down for most of the weekend (despite support bluntly denying the software issues ), thus forcing me to engage in other activities, like, you know, beachtime, some biking, catching a movie, getting an appointment for some new ink on my back, eating out etc. Still managed an efficient +600$ in 3h, but kinda of tilting to be forced away from the action on the weekend, isn't it (I officially closed my accounts on Party and 888 after recent ill advised decisions by both and do not have the taste for some Stars MTTs atm...)...

Spoiler:

My intention was to either get a spacious apartment or a house upon my return in Da nang, but my gf would have it otherwise... She is conveniently located at proximity to both her work and the beach, despite both of us having to share a somewhat a hotelish sorta room (albeit a relatively spacious one...). So my grinding quarters are not the most comfy ones (especially the chair), but I am in the habit of taking a break every 2h or so to meditate/refresh the brain

Looking forward to the grind this week (somewhere along the lines of 30-35h) and curiously, am uncharacteristically excited about studying (4h split in between training videos and Pio).

The other Asianland annoyance is not as lighthearted folks : the shaky internet connection I have already accumulated north of 50$ (probably 100$ in equity) in losses in little over 20h of play, which, in today's online games, is not insignificant given the dying state of the game Oh well, tomorrow I will go get a load for my pocket wifi, so here is to hoping that the latter will do a steady job...

+1000$ in 9h (On the +side, am beating 200z at a respectable clip, so my hourly should increase a tad )

Tomorrow

Running good, I guess, as the lone time I lost my connection today, I was not involved in a single hand on any of my 6 tables (not even in the SB But as far as connections go in Asia, one cannot run well for a prolonged period of time, hence us having contacted our apartment agent to get our own personal connection installed tomorrow at the very modest cost of 70US$ for 6 months +400$ in 2h

I was struck with a second poker aha moment (in the past 2 months) yesterday ; one pertaining to exploitative lines that can be used against regs at 100z and 200z... The other aha moment, came late this summer, when one of the GTO concepts that I had been studying - yet still refusing to integrate - felt like God sent when I started applying it

Which got me thinking of how I have thus far brought my game to my this present heights...

I am a sponge when it comes to studying, promptly gathering, analyzing then integrating adequately the info that is sent my way Concomitantly, I have a knack for exploiting player population tendencies with creatively lines, especially on sites that your screen name remains anonymous . These 2 learning methods have certainly helped me along my poker journey, but perhaps I should spend more time/effort with the software that is nowadays at our disposal...

Well, that was interesting : dropped 1500$ in 2h, shut down the computer, stepped out to engage in the outside world, went to get a massage (mediocre, one of dem places focused exclusively on happy endings ), came back, replaced my 200z tables with some 50z (and 100z), grinded 500$ back in 2h and called it a day -1000$ in 4h

On the + side, my new connection is steady and fast enough (20 Mbs), but more importantly, I never let tilt take control and thus managed to stay equanimous throughout the downswing, because I am the buddha king folks

Or perhaps this one...

Nah, nah, these guys yo

The Road Back

Well, that didn't take too long : with this new, steady internet connection of mine , clicked open a few 200z tables (after that brief forced hiatus of mine) and proceeded to crush like a mama-fracking gangsta +800$ in 4h

I looked into the WPT Cambodia :

http://www.worldpokertour.com/event/...017/#eventTab1

but unfortunately, despite an appealing 1.5k buy-in for the ME, rumour has it that a 2-5 game is not guaranteed to run, let alone a 5-10 Too bad, as it could of coincided with my January visa run...

I am looking to play more live in the near future though, as not only do I miss the social interaction/new places to visit, but my live hourly more than doubles my virtual one

Apologies folks for the pics not showing up ITT right now, but photobucket is once again down

Grooving

A steady groove it has been folks, while only hitting the virtual felt with what usually consists of 2 daily sessions of 2h each

Easy game, easy game yo

+1400$ in 10h

It does help the end results and the sanity of the mind to punctuate the grind with activities such as meditation, beach time, eating out, biking, running, watching movies or simply chilling in the sun
