Of Redneck Towns and Run Bads

Well this puts an end to this boring week of run bad in the redneckish town of Vernon It also makes it 4 consecutive weeks in the red, albeit still not as terribad as it was last week in Van where we managed to drop 5 figures Hopefully Nelson has something positive in the books for us... If not, I kept the option open of going to do some service for 10 days in Alberta where my buddy is presently the centre manager

I am going to catch A Star is Born tonight which everyone is raving about, go figure I never thought a cast involving Lady Gaga would be phenomenal... Granted, all I know about her, is her overplayed Poker Face song.

I watched Valley Uprising this week, a GOAT documentary on the history of mountain climbing in Yosemite National Park in the US of A. It was simply amazing It goes back to the beatnics who lived/partied there, to the hippies who actually took acid while ascending the 90 degrees cliff sides , to the modern day hikers who use no ropes to then base jump from the summits!!! GOAT AF

I sure hope that Nelson will bring some exciting social action, as I feel that I have been isolating myself - not deliberately, mind you, but I certainly did not reach out to peeps in a town like this . Every time I spend an extensive amount of time introverted, it becomes that much harder to step out of my shell a to engage the outside world I am meeting up for lunch in Kelowna tomorrow with a buddy and I have spent a winter in Nelson 11 years ago ; but alas, I doubt that many peeps are left from those dreadlock days (or that they would recognize me ).

Switch Blade

After yet again finding myself down 3k for the week, I woke up in good spirits, thus deliberately pulling myself out of the illusion that I am stuck in a downswing and coming to the realization that I rather find myself in the midst of a 170k 9 month upswing, am healthy, sober, happier then ever, slowly instilling my life with more peace, I have great friends, a loving family and I this potential of finding not only a cute af gf, but one that many men would be envious of... Life is good yo

Of course, the above sentiment ran for the hills when my 80-20 and 75-25% failed to hold up and I dug an early 1.5k hole for the day Nonetheless, I proceeded to weather the storm, take several breaks, meditate, gather my spirits to then luckily find myself in extremely soft short-handed games and, long and behold, I ran good

Still debating about going to that meditation retreat in Alberta... but if poker goes good in the next few days (I got 8k in RB coming up next week as well), I think I will just extend my stay here in Nelson by a week, then go check out the PLO games in Calgary before flying back to Montreal for the WPT at the end of the month

I have been working on a few pieces for my travel blog, but have not touched my novel in months I will probably look to get back into it come Europe, but the motivation is lacking, tbh.

Euphoria

I felt elated from a brief online upswing yesterday for the first time this year Hear me out : it has been such a calendar of run good - the last month not withstanding -, that winning lots of monies has become part of my expectations as opposed to this funky wave that one can ride sky high yo And I do not mean this from an entitled POV, hells no, but moreso that the virtual realm has become my office space : I put on my grinding shoes, my pyjas, listen to podcasts, have my caffeine kicking around et voila, I sign-in/sign-out like a pro yo It has none of the bright lights feel of a live event MTT. Except yesterday, that is, where after a prollllonnnnnnnggg 22k or so month long downswing, I upswong to the tune of 3.5k And even though this run bad has not been weighing on me too heavily, the upward swong felt like that moment when psychedelics kick-in-mama-frackers-AKA-pure-f**king-gold

I love Nelson. It has so much personality. The thing is... I don't remember it at all It was a different Dubnjoy that slept underneath that bridge when he first rolled into town... It was a different version of Dubn that came the following summer to hippie festivities and was crashing by the river... A more depressed Dub that spent the winter here, on welfare, sleeping with a 19 year old punky chick while leaving no stones unturned trying to figure out what it's all about and why the f**k he was so inclined to circulate further down the downward spiral

Times have changed folks Even though I have not been engaging enough of the outside world (but do plan on meeting some peeps when I am done this weekly rake race of mine (presently holding on to 2nd for 3.2k yo )), life is fracking golden

Feisty AF

So I was already daydreaming of taking half day off, perhaps a full day... I mean, I was comfortably sitting in 2nd place in my bi-monthly rake race and, with only 3 days to go and a 30% lead on third place (who had yet to show any signs of fight), I was thinking of slacking off until Sunday, right... Wrong I woke up this morning - make that noon -, meditated for an hour, only to realize that our 3rd place fellow was right there in my f**king bumper I mean, what the hell is wrong with him Get a life buddy, as opposed to putting any unnecessary pressure on both of us I mean, do you think for a second I will let you get ahead of me

So anyhow, I put in 6h today, but anytime I would pull ahead/take a break to meditate, our fellow came charging back Fracking annoying little buddy Of course, he is probably early 20 something, playing 1001 tables while I have to squeeze out any stamina left in my middle-age body/mind to put on a fight yo When I get back tonight and take a nap, come midnight I will put in another 2-3h because

#AintF**kingQuittingThisFightAmFrenchAndStubborn

Which reminds me of back in grade 6 when we had this 1600m run in phys ed... I was never naturally gifted to be the best at anything I did - but above average -, yet I put so much into it. Anyways, this buddy of mine would win... EVERY. SINGLE. FRACKING. TIME. To my dismay, as I would finish 2nd every f**king time Until this sunny spring day, that is, that I put all my might in the race yo

The sun was shining, summer was rapidly coming AKA everything was in place that day for me to be victorious So anyhow, like it was always the case, our friend came charging first out of the gates, always taking the lead from the beginning to never let it go... Me, I would always leave dead last. And take pleasure in passing people 1 by 1 by 1 by fracking 1 yo Until there was only my buddy left a few metres ahead...

You see, because he would always finish first and me 2nd, he would cross the finish line without any pressure and I would follow suit shortly after. But not today. Nope. I saw him a couple of metres ahead, the finish line about 50m beyond... I gave it my all until he finally noticed me, started sprinting and we fracking sweated balls until the finish line in a dead tie... but somehow and for some f**king reason, he managed to win by a whisker FML.

So our 3rd place fellow from the rake race did not go bat-shyt-ape-insane on volume today, sticking to his standard as opposed to doubling it But here is how I think the situation went down, if you guys want to hear me out...

He wakes up in his Western European bed in mom's and dad's basement with a smile on his face, thinking that 2nd place was still up for grabs... until his computer screen gives him the bad news, that is Angry af, he starts swearing with a KGB accent
Spoiler:
even though he is from Western Europe as... you know, we lack good movie references in the poker world
, grabs one of his 3 monitors that he uses to play his 1001 tables, and smashes it to the ground while screaming his lungs out :

- "THAT FRACKING MAWG FRENCH CANADIAN F**K, WHY CAN'T HE JUST QUIT!!??!!!!???!!!!!"

... Of course, there is no answer to his curse, outside of a nasty echo bouncing off his brick basement wall...

Of Cafes and (laying) Eggs

So our fellow Western European friend woke up today and... In fact, I think he never did wake up I believe he went to sleep yesterday, laid an egg in bed and called it quits So anyhow, much to my delight, I did not have to put in any volume this afternoon, thus guaranteeing myself of an added 3.3k in the next few days Not too shabby, not too shabby indeed

I have noticed at least 6 cafes in Nelson thus far which, to a fellow writer/chill-out-French-introvert like me, is fracking heaven yo Especially now that I will be moving in town for the next 10 days and should not be involved in a heated rake race, I will be spending more time writing, walking around, chilling in the sun and (hopefully) meeting some peeps. Speaking of which, I have a goal of asking at least 1 girl out (and succeeding) during my stay here, because yolo, to challenge myself and happiness EV, of course

There is a last 2 weeks rake race debuting in a few hours and while I will give it some importance, unless things unexpectedly fall on my lap, I will be gunning for 3rd or 4th. All the value is in the top 2 places (4.8k for 1st, 3.2k for 2nd, 1.6k for 3rd and 1.4k for 4th), but given that the WPT is coming up in 2 weeks and all, I will not burn myself beforehand. I might take 2 days off for a 15h meditation retreat as well if I find the need for it...

Lol, this was also me in grade 8 against my neighbour. He had already failed one grade and was only going to last a couple of years more before not finishing high school in my hick town. But in our grade 8 gym class he was the best "milk run" guy (have no idea where that term came from?). It was always like a 20 minute run that seemed to waste most of our gym class away, but me and him took our race against each other seriously, and we even completed the extra required lap around the town junior baseball diamond (which most others in the class would skip and even almost "beat" us back to school). We were usually neck and neck until the few hundred upward metres back to the school, but that's where he got me every time, it was never even really close. I'm actually guessing the first part of the run wasn't very close either, and he probably just coasted to have someone keep him company.

El Centro

Just moved into a hotel in Downtown Nelson ; it feels so much better to have everything upon hands reach Prior to today, I was staying in an uninspiring AirBnB : it is located on top of the hill, making the walk back home (almost) unfeasible (a 30-40 minute steep hike (I would just get a taxi)), the ceiling/floors were paper thin, thus making all of the activities of the upstairs family transparent af , the wifi was absolute shyt (spent about 125$ grinding on my phone), there was no kitchen (just a little fridge, microwave and coffee maker). Still not a terrible experience mind you, but it did make exploring Nelson/anything else than the grind, that much more difficult to do

There is this cute Thai chick that I want to go ask out tomorrow ; she works in a Thai restaurant and I will pull that good ole "hey I don't know anyone, let's meet for coffee", much like I use to pull the effective "hey, come crash over my place, I won't make moves, just want to cuddle and perhaps kiss..." at the end of drunken evenings back then Both are actually based on sincerity though, as I am very friendly in my approach and while I do envision an end goal beyond the friendly facade, it is nowhere close to being mandatory. More like a happy byproduct

Alright, in preparation of the WPT in exactly 2 weeks time, I will be renewing my MTT studying tonight, aiming for 30 minutes a day yo Spending time with different games in the lab has made the process much more interesting for yours truly

Aha, BC it is then If I had to pick an area in Canada to settle down, BC it would be Most likely Salt Spring, albeit Nelson would have to be into consideration as well... Vancouver Island still has more to offer for me though, as far as having a meditation centre, big cities close by, beaches, warmer weather... I think the Yukon and BC are equally as beautiful though, but I would not want to do another northern winter up there

Progression

I remember the first time I won a Unibet Open package online, it took me the entirety of the 3 months allocated to accumulate enough RB points to do so ; today, I just binked another one IN 16 DAYS Of course, playing 8 tables of 400z as opposed to 6 of 50-100z (like I did 2 years ago) weighs in significantly, yet 6 times faster is quite the feat

It is quite a delight to be able to pick the minds of elite talent such as Sam Greenwood, Jason Koon and Fedor Holz through the RIO videos It does bring some excitement to going into the lab, albeit still a tedious af process

I was listening to the Chip Race podcast lately and Dara Okeary (nice guy who I got a chance to speak with in Montreal during Party Millions) was talking about how he studies 20h+ a week Of course, the dude is competitive as it comes and excels mightily in the live highstakes MTT arena (just cashed for 300k last week again). For those of yous that do not know him, he started playing professionally at the ripe age of 40+ coming from a competitive running background. Just to give you an example of his dedication : he holds Ireland's record for the longest distance ran in 24h, which was just under 800kms, if I remember correctly...

Upbeat (down)Trend

So after taking a 2k hit this morning in 2h, it reasserted this intention of mine of dedicating more time to the outside world yo I oftentimes find myself walking this fine line in between, on one side, the dedication/determination for the grind and my overall financial and poker goals and, on the other side, poker being a tool that serves my life EV. But anyhow, I was paying a bit too much attention to the rakerace again (am clearly 2nd in monthly and barely 2nd in the bi-monthly one) which will now be officially tossed aside for happiness EV yo

Stuff that I will do during the next week :

- Treat myself to some purchases. There are a ton of outfitter/outdoorsy type of stores here (because of the ski hill), so will indulge in a few nice shirts, items etc.

- Get a massage. Or 2. Of course, with the WPT coming up, my massage bill will once again be UP THE SKY

- Go watch A Star is Born again. Yup, it is elite af and refreshing for such a mainstream flick yo

- Go ask that Filipina chick out. We talked yesterday at her work, the Thai restaurant, so I did manage to break the ice and while my first impression/flirting performance was a little dubious (I came out looking as shy ), will go back and simply ask her out. Because... why not, right This is definitely going nowhere and I might get turned down, but to the hells with it,

#YoloAndTooFrackingOldToHoldBackOnLimitedTimeLeft

- Do a 2 day meditation retreat. I have booked a 10 day retreat in Barcelona for January, but I want to refresh my spirits before WPT's week grind.

- Potentially do a hike on weed edibles. I have been sober for so many years - ayahuasca journey not withstanding -, so would be nice to create a little bit of non-sober excitement...

Darn Kawhi Leonard is with the Raptors...

Am occupying my time in Nelson with fun stuff to do everyday like going to buy some nice pants and a tidy shirt today, hair cut tomorrow, getting some glasses this weekend and catching a movie, and then Wednesday I am going to see Jeff Martin, the ex lead singer of the band The Tea Party, you guys ever heard of them? Tea Party is actually the first concert I attended when I was 17 as they were opening for Blind Melon (it is the tour where Shannon Hoon pissed on the crowd in Vancouver ). I would go on to see Tea Party 3-5 times

For those of yous that never heard about them, they had this interesting classic rock/alternative sound to them, a cross of Led Zeppelin meets the grudge 90s... Albeit the singer looked and dressed like Jim Morrison's twin brother A solid Canadian band that unfortunately got rapidly cheesy after their 3rd album. Anyhow, pretty happy that I stumbled upon this show (30$) and that the dates works ; I will buy me some ganja edibles and enjoy the trip yo It should be a blast (pun intended)

And darn, Kawhi Leonard is with the Raptors
Spoiler:
except Demar Derozan looked amazing yesterday and... don't tell anyone this, but I enjoy watching Derozan's craft more than the mechanic-effecient-robot that is Kawhi

Yeah man, I highly recommend vipassana meditation as it is simply the shyt . It is a 10 course executed in complete silence, with 10h+ a day dedicated to intense meditation in order to fully understand the meditation technique. I mean... you go deep af It is tough, emotionally and physically painful, but takes you to uncharted territories insofar as understanding human nature/tendencies and our own ego. So anyways, there is basically vipassana courses held in (almost) every single country, with even Africa (the least predominant continent in terms of vipassana exposure), having courses held in 30 ot its countries or so It is based on Buddhism teachings, obviously.

Kawhi Fracking Leonard

Well, I have accomplished what I had set out to do on the virtual grind, which was to climb out of that (relatively) steep hole I had dug myself into over the past little while ; but for the life of me, anytime I get some momentum going, I still could not book a profit over this span As a recap : I dug myself a (approximately) shyt hole, swam in it for a while still managing to maintain a positive attitude and normal happiness EV yo So anyhow, in the span of 4 days, I finally saw the daylight up above, reached for the skies, and climbed out back to the safety of the ground level yo Except... ground level stuck in quick sand is where I have been since Despite setting my sights for the heavens, my ambitions faaaarrrrrrrr beyond the horizon, here I am, splashing like a little innocent duckling in fracking mud

Nevertheless, I am bringing a positive attitude with me towards WPT Montreal Of course, I have this nagging desire in me to cross that elusive 200k threshold for the journey, but like a wise man once said - hummmmmm AKA Kawhi Leonard -, if you lose yourself envisioning that 200k score too far into the future my young(ish) French-Canadian friend, you will trip over your f**king feet Or something along those lines

The Merits (not) of Open-Shoving UTG

I have been really impressed with the volume I have been putting-in since August, which coincides to when I got up to Dawson basically. I have always been known for grinding a ton up in Dodge (50h+), mainly because I manage to appropriately combine live and online, thus reaching a perfect equilibrium in concentration levels, social outlets, exercise, sufficient rest etc. But now that I am back to playing exclusively online and yet still hitting a solid 35h weekly of volume, it leaves me a little flabbergasted as to why I failed to do so earlier in the year…. Sure, part of it was travelling, so life stuff would hence be at the forefront of priorities, but even in Quebec where I was a hermit for a big part of my stay there, I barely crossed the 30h weekly line…. Anyways, it speaks largely of my balance of mind lately and the absence of fatigue, which is great yo Except today, that is

I took a line which can only be associated with fatigue/tilt when after the CO opened and I 3bet QQ OTB, the SB cold 4bet 2.2x. We were a bit shallow (80bbs effective), yet I could of found an exploitative call-reassess on the flop thus giving myself a chance to eventually find an exploitative fold…. I know that I cannot be faltered GTO-wise for 5bet-sticking it in, but I am familiar enough with this player field not to do so (I failed to improve vs KK). But this pales in comparison to 5 minutes later where, I had just shut 2 tables (from the original 8) hence deciding to call it quits soon (because of the QQ hand) while reading stuff on 2+2

So anyhow, there I am half-arsed immersed into this article that I am reading, when I notice that I had just open-shoved 120bbs with A10o UTG Of course, it is a misclick, but I still have to sweat-it-out when the BB tanks... and then ultimately finds a fold

Ok, cool. I registered for a course in Barcelona. I just took a look and saw that the UK has 4 meditation centres But as an English speaker, you could basically do a course anywhere in the world (it is usually conducted in English/the native tongue). Pre-WPT Plans

Well, another week comes to an end with okish results ; am still running bad and only made money off my RB, but am content with climbing back into the black yo )

In another realm, I was chatting daily with this cute 32 year old Spanish chick (very lively and compassionate) and we had basically come to a foregone conclusion that we were going to meet up and most likely become a couple... And then... she... simply... disappeared Of course, such is the nature of online dating, where you shop around, chat a little, move on and Lord knows I have done so with countless women to their dismay ), but it felt as a de facto reality this time around that all was set in stone... Oh well...

Anyhow, here is my (sightly) condensed schedule leading to next Monday's WPT :

- Starting this evening after a couple of hours of grinding, I will do a 15h meditation retreat.

- I will do some gummy bear THC trip on Wednesday at the Jeff Martin concert yo

- I got a 12h overnight greyhound bus journey to Calgary on Thursday.

- 2 Days in Calgary to come in 3-4th in my online rakerace and go grind some PLO at Cowboy's Casino.

- I get into Montreal on Sunday evening where we have a dinner planned in a sports bar with the family.

- Monday evening at 6pm is the beginning of the 5.3k WPT ME (more on my planned schedule in the next few days).

Transcendence

Soooo I woke up this morning and noticed that the 2nd place fellow in the rakerace was well within reach (he is just toying with me, obviously ), so I decided to quit my 1h daily morning meditation and hit the tables right away... Fast-forward to 150 minutes later and I find myself burnt out, depressed, down af Of course, after catching up on my missed meditation session, all the defilements are all but dissipated yo Which brings up the contemplation of... where would I be without this daily routine Probably depressed, most likely... drinking away my sorrows... or still seeking for some sort of answer to transcending this bottom-world pain... Thank all dem gods, little elfish fellows and all the fracking transcendent forces in the world for vipassana yo

Nelson is such a sweet little town. So many good folks, splendid nature, interesting shops/restaurants. I definitely could see myself in a place like this Unfortunately though, I feel I have not fully taken advantage of this magical place... I never did ask that Filipina chick out... I cut my meditation retreat to a mere 6h (which is fine). And despite having met some nice and interesting peeps here, my social life has been pretty limited. I do need to get myself to Europe ASAP and get me a gf yo, be it casual or longer term Yup, definitely am missing a female companion in my life.

Why didn't you ask the Filipina chick out?

(obviously super easy for me as a married guy of ~8 years to ask, but will admit I didn't exactly ask out a lot of girls in my day)

Blast Off

Sooooo that was quite the interesting evening, to say the least First of all, I showed up at this really cozy venue with benches spread out everywhere (to be confortably high yo ), lots of room to roam around on the open floor, a nice chill out roam... I had taken the recommended dosage for my THC gummi bear, I felt good, relaxed, stone, but not otherworldly HIGH When considering that the last time I got (recreationally) intoxicated - I am discounting ayahuasca here, as it is more of a spiritual journey -, has been a good 5 years ago, there ain't no way I was going to half-arse it, right I proceeded to take 2x the suggested quantity (she INSISTED several times on not doing and this is coming from a pothead ) and... needless to say, but I was F**KING OUT OF THIS WORLD
Spoiler:
It did make the musical experience that much more special, but it was too much to handle when I got back to hotel and couldn't focus/watch basketball for the life of me and to which severe paranoia kicked in for 90 minutes until I got down from my peak

The Tea Party is always listed in one of the top 10-15 Canadian rock bands and usually performs in front of thousands of people, so to get to see its lead singer in a lounge sorta atmosphere with only 40 other peeps, is fracking amazing I mean, this one of the bands that made the 90s special for me and Jeff Martin had quite this rock star persona with his black leather pants and Jim Morrison wannabe look.

But dude has an ego BIG like the fracking world I mean, I get that he was drunk and he has this act to maintain, but he kept repeating "how lucky we were to get to see him" in such a setting and "to remember this evening" when he will be playing in Vancouver in front of thousands of peeps. You ain't that special friend... Or at least not more than any other of us. I must admit - again, this is based on a prompt judgement -, but dude looks like an obnoxious drunk stuck in the 90s
Spoiler:
He lives in Byron Bay nowadays and yeah, the guy is talented af and it was a special evening, but I mean, nowhere close to my top 10 concerts despite its potential (he quit after an hour and did not seem interested to outdo himself for 40 peeps )

I did engage conversation/give myself a chance to hit it off, but alas!, no such chemistry ensued! I still wanted to go back and ask her out, but moreso as going through the motions/force myself out of my comfort zone as opposed to investing myself emotionally in some high equity potential... Then I got lazy and other stuff took the forefront. I am fine with the (lack of) outcome though. This last year (since Peru) has seen me flirt/step out of my shell considerably more, but yeah, I need to double-down in that part of my life pretty soon

Aya

Sooooo, after a 12h sleepless greyhound trip, an early arrival in Calgary, a morning buffet/passing out for a few hours and a very swingy day in the virtual realm upon awakening, I hopped in a cab and made my way to Calgary Casino yo You see, I had booked the Marriot hotel mainly because of its convenient location situated a couple blocks aways from Cowboys Casino, but apparently only 1-2 NLHE runs over there nowadays Anyhow, when I find out that several tables of 1-2-5 and 5-10-25 PLO were running at Calgary Casino, I needed no more convincing yo

I failed to get into the bigger game, but it mattered little, as I was there for entertaining purposes moreso than for the grind, which really came to light when the massage lady walked in : a bright f**king light, I tell you, in this nebulous gambling world And by far the prettiest lady I have seen since... shyt, I don't know, a while... In fact, I had noticed her last year at Grey Eagle Casino during WPT Deepstacks... Noticed her BIG, passionate eyes... I am such a suckah for a woman that has these emotional shiny eyes So yeah, I couldn't care less that my 800$ bluff just failed in a perfect spot... Nothing mattered, really, except asking her out

Yup, exactly, nothing to lose and a lot to gain AKA exponential EV yo So she did say "yes" when I said "you want to meet for a coffee or lunch tomorrow, as I know nobody in Calgary", but she did then add "I got to work though" and "I do not have much time on the weekend". I did get her # and am hoping af that we can meet up and chat some more (we really hit it off), but, alas, I think my equity runs in the neighborhood of 15%, at best...

WPT Spreadsheet

Looking ahead to the structure of the WPT ME starting Monday - if only because today has been a nasty day of run bad on the felt (-3k) and off (never heard back from that chick) -, I am really impressed by the turtle-pace with which the blinds/antes climb. Let’s check it out :

The blind levels are 60 minutes and the starting stack 40k in chips. For some reason, this will be the first time The Playground will opt for the BB ante over the button one (I would choose the later, but whatever, nobody consulted me right ) :

- 100-200
- 100-200, 100
(BB ante)
- 100-200, 200
- 200-200, 200
- 200-300, 300
- 200-400, 400
- 300-500, 500
- 300-600, 600

End of Day 1. So when we look at the depth of our stack, even if we remained in the vicinity of the 40k that comprised our initial stack, we would still finish Day 1 with a very comfortable 66.6bbs , hence making my usual double-up-or-bust attitude at the end less appealing. It makes the whole ordeal more rec-friendly, thus contributing to there increased survival and easier passage to Day 2, even if this group might be largely compromised of tight-passive nitty types (which will in turn entice more blind-stealing and 3betting when they are in the blinds, me thinks...)... Then they will be 2 last levels on Day 2 before registration closes :

- 400-800, 800
- 500-1000, 1000

I am (potentially) allocating myself 3 bullets (as always, I have 100% of my action), but can envision making it on a lone try. Everything is in place to succeed now that I have climbed myself out of my recent virtual slump Might go catch a movie tonight, but perhaps I will just stay in and go in the MTT lab for an hour of revision, yo I will get in Montreal at 18:00 tomorrow evening, will rush to a family dinner and then the ME starts at 16:00 on Monday. Send some run good folks

In this context, I would consider 15% freerolling!
