Re: Dancing with the Old Lady, the Journey continues...

Established Prowess

I should probably threw out the window this intention of having a winning week especially when cutting it short with my hike this upcoming weekend Nonetheless, I do have 12k or so of RB coming up this month that will more than make up for my present run bad

I have been hearing echoes of how I ran extremely well last weekend to bink the tournament ... And I mean, I did, I absolutely ran greater than God, his Son and his fracking holy Spirit, yet it is impossible to win one of these without winning more than your share of flips... Also, I only had my tournament life TWICE on the line throughout the 125 player field : once midway through the field when my AA doubled up through the chip leader (I was also a big stack) against his top pair in a >80% spot and down to 3 players when I shoved from the SB my 89 > K7 in a 11bbs effective pot (pure coin flip, 44-56%).

Example of a hand where things aren't exactly what they seem to be when factoring in ICM : It gets folded to me OTB with 107o when I had to post the SB, and both the SB and BB have to post a big blind each (and 1bb in antes). Given that the SB is nitty af (and sitting on 6bbs where he is folding AK and anything not 1010+) and that I largely have the BB covered (he has 11bbs, I am the chip leader with 31bbs), this is the bottom of my shoving range (I am folding 106). The spot is just too profitable not to take. Of course, the BB wakes up with A4o, takes about 30 seconds before calling (complete ICM suicide, as he had 3 shorter stacks in total). His A holds up, I perceive to be reckless when I played correctly and BB committed utter and absolute ICM suicide Don't trust what you seem to perceive folks, all is an illusion End or rant.

Turning Winds

Turned things around on both the live and virtual felt and actually booked a break even week after being down as much as 7k+ Been sick for the past few days, but we are trying to go hiking/camping for a couple of days with a buddy ; temperatures have fallen as low as -9c, but we should get some sunny skies. And, of course, it is always a great time to dip into the best of what Mother Nature has to offer, glacial shivers or not

Just got 9 days left in the north and am quite happy that I will catch the last Cancan dance show of the season It is always an amazing evening where so many locals come out to enjoy the burlesque acts If not, life is good. Like really good - flu aside -, as these recent live tourney scores have put a smile on my face, as does what lies ahead of me this winter AKA a ton of nomadic freedom, becoming fluid in Spanish, making out with beautiful and classy women and just plain happiness, really, that beatitude of peacefully settling in the moment yo

Lab Tests

I had to unfortunately cancel that overnight hiking trip - ehhhhh that cold, throat and migraine were just too much to be furthermore exposed - which put dampers on my plans to spend time outdoors - need much more of that instead of, you know, always dwelling within myself - and time spent with a good buddy, which I have criminally underdone thus far with him

Just getting back into the virtual swing of things lately combined with some studying ; for some (obvious?) reason, whenever I go on a heater in either the live or online realm, the other consequentially suffers in results I guess that it might seem intuitive to lots of yous given that both worlds play quite differently, but I always found that I adapted quite well to alternating... Or perhaps such was just an illusion

I am still feeling euphoric remnants of my 2 solid tourney scores I guess that the recognition of my peers and (perhaps more importantly) having my folks emotionally invested in my tournament runs, has made all the prior tilting well worth it

Like I previously mentioned, I ran like God in the White Ram ME, yet also brought my A+ game to the felt yo When we got down to HU play, we both had 21bbs stacks and while villain had been tight-passive throughout the tournament (lots of limping while raising only premiums), players usually have a tendency to adapt and loosen up in a HU match. And also imitate what the other opponents do. So I initially min-raised the button twice, only to get called by trash hands On my third button, I started limping, right, as what is the purpose of playing a higher variance game if we have no fold equity... and to my delight, villain subsequently also limped on his button We went from cutting our initial 4.2bbs pots to 2.2bbs, thus considerably lowering the variance and increasing the skill factor Of course, I ran as pure as can be, so I was always going to bink this tournament in all the fracking quantum realities know to mankind and aliens alike, but limping with 21bbs effective does make up for some deepish enough play yo

Virtual Grind

Will be studying the 4 card game for the next month before switching to the MTT school 2 weeks prior to WPT Montreal. Alternating my time spent in the lab with different games has actually made the whole process more interesting yo

Am aiming for a hefty 25k in the upcoming 2 weeks which might sound like an overreach upon first glance, but definitely attainable when factoring in the 8k or so in RB coming up

I think I will register for service in a meditation centre in Barcelona during Christmas time... It should be a good opportunity to meet some peeps in Spain (AKA some pretty ladies ).

Last Days

3 days left in the north before hitting the road again ; 3 days to have dinners with friends, splash around on the live felt, to pack my goods, sale my van and head down to Vancouver once again yo

Got a few dates lined up with my upcoming European trip ; one in London (casual one night stand), another in Rome I hope to meet up with and then in Spain, which the latter might end up to something more substantial, perhaps...

Looking forward to the upcoming WPT in Montreal now that I have a better feel on how to navigate multi-day events and, perhaps more importantly, that my recent run good has substantially boosted my level of confidence Also kind of cool that my folks will be following along, something that I would of never - NEVER - imagined feasible a few years ago

Alright, that's it for now folks, and pardon the lack of energy instilled ITT recently, but I feel that once I hit the road again, the inspiration will follow suit yo

Shoot Me in the Face

Took a beating today. Like a pure, legit stomping Think a jab str8 in the face, an ensuing uppercut for the KO, to then get my ear bit off by a fracking rejuvenated Mike f**king punch out Tyson To the extent where I had to step away from the felt at the casino when I did not scoop a single pot (not even a chop ) in the 10-20 Omaha 08 game - albeit, I took off mainly because of boredom and to resume the online grind -, and online where the agro-fracking-ape-monkey-of-a-jack-arse-bot-clicking-f**k always hit his 2 outer on the river FML. And a thousand times, FML

Anyhow, that plan of making 25k in 2 weeks is now a pipe dream. Let's aim for a more modest 12k... Or even 10k

Southbound

At the airport, leaving Dawson. Once again. For like the 1001th time since 2001. But if I use to skip town, thumbs up, hitchhiking/camping along TransCanada Highway back in the day, I am nowadays hopping on a plane with a suitcase and a shyt load more monies (and white whiskers) than the younger version of myself Darn it is insane how many times I have crossed this immensely large country of ours Think 8 times hitchhiking, 20 in the greyhound bus and about as much in a plane Yours truly has a lot of mileage folks, a fracking lot.

So my belongings - outside of my deadbeat van -, are packed up in a few boxes in Montreal and 6-10 bins over here. Except, they f**king all disappeared on me I mean, this is even beyond the terrible usual me Not sure if someone just helped themselves to my belongings when my van was parked at the casino or something, but I was suddenly left with nothing to my name, sorta speak. And it really doesn’t matter. At all If I was hypothetically to buy a place in Spain and furnish the place and all, I would just reload the closet with freshly purchased clothes, and whatever, just buy a bunch of stuff The truth of the matter is that these possessions are so pointless for someone as nomadic as myself : we are born penniless and will be buried broke af.

I find myself in the midst of heated rakeraces once again, with a good shot at 1st in the monthly one (am presently 4th but we are all within reach of each other) and 2nd in the weekly one (no shot at first, but 2nd is a cool 3.3k). Given that I will be pouncing on the virtual buttons this week, I should have a good fighting chance at all of them. If not, will be studying omaha a decent amount (ehhh, I feel my edge is still lacking in the 4 card game ), get a massage downtown and hopefully ask the Japanese girl to dinner (if she still works there…), grind some 1-2-5 PLO, catch a movie, eat a ton of sushis, go for walks and write a decent amount, yo

In Ur Face

V-A-R-I-A-N-C-E....... The negative kind, that is... We do not hold much against the positive one that shoots us right up to the sky, right, we accept it, float like angel dust and simply enjoy the spectacular scenery of the trip...
Spoiler:
But when the negative one kicks in, all hell lets loose That 2 outer. Underpair. Undercards. Draw that gets there. Or worse, the unexpected runner-runner that you failed to envision It gets pretty nasty and fast

When you spend months running like God, you at times look at certain peeps spewing their money away/running bad, and wonder to yourself "how come they always lose "... You forget about that 350k hand stretch where you were pulling your hair out/losing your sanity in the process... you just forget.

The human mind is not forged to accept the brutal swings... We spend the majority of our lives trying to accept death and old age, so how the f**king hell could we ever be on top of the swings involved in a 2/4 card game when most of us indulge in the stability of a 9-5, a relationship, children, a steady household, a familiar social circle... Nope, when we get hit by the nastiness of a legit downswing, we simply suffer, suck it up and ultimately forget that it ever happened when variance smiles our way again

BlacKkKlansman

It always fascinated me how the Chinatown in downtown Vancouver is located a street away from the biggest Skidrow in Canada AKA East Hastings You hence find this interesting heterogenous mix of Asian working class folks and homeless (junkies) populating the streets

Finally booked a winning day (or at least at the start of the day) : +4.5k in 4h yo Hopefully this will be the start of a lonnnnnnnnnnggg and healthy upswing, but with my swings lately (am exclusively playing 400z with 1-2 tables of 200 PLO thrown in there), who fracking knows I also decided to stop playing (or at least less frequently) the 400z PLO games where I felt that my edge was reduced to the will of variance

Will catch Spike Lee’s flick on white Supremacy tonight (and another film tomorrow evening, perhaps Mandy…) and leave the live PLO games for the more juicy Friday and Saturdays (albeit, just for a few hours).

I missed out on an opportunity yesterday in a Vietnamese restaurant when this extremely hot and luscious professionally single woman dressed in a tight arse small skirt sat at the table in front of me, facing me, legs wide open, and…. I fracking frooze I was just too exhausted from the grind and had actually just turned down a dinner offer from a Yukoner hot friend, as I just did not have my mind on the flirt grind But darn, when you wake up the next morning well rested and untilted, you think about that lost opportunity and start lustfully wondering…. I am WAY too old to let any of these chances slip by, fatigue or not

edit : darn, was holding back tears at the end of BlacKkKlansman The ending is quite emotionally heavy, to say the least, with scenes of Charlottesville's massacre bringing a closure to this racial commentary. I was the first one to leave the theatre and noticed that quite a few peeps were as shaken as I was, most of them folks of colour who understandably were exposed to more racism than a French Canadian fellow like myself has been

Thx bro, and yeah, I hope so as well... But at the end of the year, will it matter that much in hindsight if I made 200-220k as opposed to a quarter mil... I think that either way, I will look back at 2018 with a BIG GRIN

So I started leaving travelling when I was 19, but it was only a summer affair thingy until I turned 22 and became a permanent dharma bum, sorta speak . In my 20s/early 30s, I opted for the more accessible/cheaper Latin American and Asian options, as I was an expert at making my pennies last I can't say that I have visited many countries when factoring in the amount of time spent on the road , but most of this is due to my very chill out nature of eventually finding a cool spot to nestle in yo Also, manifold were the times where I ran out of money and had to work (Guatemala, Australia), house sit (Mexico) or just live very cheaply (meditation retreats, camping, sleeping in parks etc.). But anyhow, the easy answer is, outside of Canada, I have spent the most time in the Phils and Vietnam, but this is directly due to being with my ex for 3 years. Now that I am in my 40s and have (much) different interests than the younger version of myself, I will explore thoroughly Europe and any other destinations that comes to mind, no matter how exotic/expensive the latter may be

North America : Might go back to Mexico as I enjoy the life in small pueblos/beach towns, Canada is a big duh and do not see myself spending much time in the US of A, especially now that they will have a tolerance zero with cannabis users (I have gotten arrested before it and it is in their computer ) : 3 countries visitesd.

Central America : Already spent a sufficient amount of time in this relatively small stretch of land, so do not see myself going back barring unexpected offers (albeit I would be interested in checking out Cuba and El Salvadore though...) : countries visited 6.

South America : Am still in touch with my beautiful Peruvian 23 year old lady friend, so might actually head back after Europe this winter, but who knows Also do want to eventually check out Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Bolivia. And also-also-also-like-f**king-ALSO : AYAHUASCA BABY, enuff said : 2 countries visited.

Europe : still am (ironically) new to the Old Continent and yet I definitely want to explore its every single road, pavement, building, city, town, country, corner or whatever for frack sakes, as I love that place till death do us apart yo : 6 countries visited.

Asia : Am including Australia and Middle East in the latter (have yet to set foot in Africa), but because of meditation (and who does not like to be single in Asia, right ), I see myself returning to India/Thailand for those 1 month retreats as well as check out a few countries I have thus far missed out on (Japan, Singapore, Indonesia) : 7 countries visited.

Grand total of 24 (I have obviously left out layovers).

Life Hacks

Ehhhh, got lost after getting off the Skytrain and taking the wrong direction for the casino... showed up only to realize that I am #25 on the fracking list I mean, Vancouver use to be the shyt for poker ; now it is overraked, offering a limit amount of tables/good games and they stick you in the dead centre of Marriot Hotel as opposed to building a poker room Combine this with the fact that I dropped 2.2k at the virtual tables today, found out that I was one of the 90 million fb users hacked and that I find myself back at the hotel on a Friday evening, kinds sucks

On the flip side of things, am quite happy with the way I have been handling this recent downswing yo It was only a couple of years ago where a -2.5k day would emotionally cripple me to the extent of feeling this TITANIC heaviness upon sleeping/waking up And now, not a dent I feel quite normal with no trace of my happiness levels being affected yo This said, I have been somewhat doubting my game - ehhhh, will I crush in 2019 like I did in 2018 while nonetheless feeling much more refreshed than I did while in the midst of my crazy August-September upswing, for some reason

Knockout Blows

I have not done a lot socially in Vancouver during my week here. I mean, outside of the grind, I went to catch 2 movies at the theatre, tried a few different restaurants - nothing to write home about, just random decent Japanese/Vietnamese restaurants - and na-fracking-da Of course, it was always going to be about the online grind given the juicy equity of the promotions (not the actual results ), but darn, my time would of been better spent in Whistler or something

I played 4h tonight at Parq's casino. I was intrigued by the social dynamics of the regs (most of which are Asian and whose faces I recognize throughout the years). And outside of this pretty professionally-secretary-looking-geekish-girl - she seemed soooo nice, talked to everyone and her demeanour while she lost pots was as pure as can be AKA she-was-a-fracking-Saint-but-I-failed-to-engage-in-a-lengthy-conversation-with-her -, there is this pro that I have seen grind the 2-5 game for a decade+ (he use to play 1-2 with me back when I first started coming down here in the winters). The guy is a class-act : he simply gets it. He is nice to everyone, smiles all the time, never talks strat at the table, does not indulge in the usage of ipads, smart phones, ipods or i-fracking-whatever etc. at the table (as oppose to so many others ) and uses some interesting and purely exploitative lines (live player yo ). And yet, while I was having these thoughts and thinking how cool it is to see him still grinding live after all these years - like myself, mind you, albeit I favour the virtual realm in a 70-30 clip -, a meathead-sorta-fellow at my table, said "I hate that guy" with a long face. "He took 75k from me", he continued, not seeing beyond his hurt ego. Of course, this is bound to happen. Even directed towards your nicest grinder. Like yours truly, mind you, that although he gets a lot of love from the regs in Dawson, some have quit over the years and hold a distaste AS BIG AS THE WORLD towards my person because of the accumulative beatings they took throughout the years

As Canadians, we get a 3 month visa for the Schengel Area before having to leave for the same period and then we can rinse-repeat. So I will be in the UK for the Unibet Open and then use up most of my visa in Spain. Not sure where I will head afterwards, but am hesitating in between Asia or South America... I will probably come back in May though and use up another 3 months in the summertime

Spoiler:

Alright, looking forward to next week, I will lower my grinding volume (not feeling the mental fatigue, but will promptly call it quits if I start downswinging in my session), spend more times with my vipassana buddies in Vernon (am hopping on the 6h greyhound bus tomorrow), catch a few movies, some time at the beach and simply looking to engage in the outside world more yo

I will not set hefty monetary goals for the upcoming weeks prior to Montreal, but covering my MTT buy-ins for the WPT (10-20k) would be satisfactory, 3h of weekly Omaha studying for 2 weeks and then switch to tournament theory yo. As as far as yearly financial goals go, I have now lowered my target to 200k+ (as opposed to 250k+ ; we are now sitting on 168k).

New Week... Finally

Feeling quite happy/unaffected for a fellow on a steep 3 weeks 20k downswing I booked a 300$ win last night after still finishing significantly down for the day, and yet it felt sooooo delightful , thus painting a grin on my face for the snoozes to come Looking back a couple of years ago, I am so glad that I rid myself of that inner demon that was the source of my tilting (think of a venomous beast that secretly inhabits you and silently tears you open from inside out/AKA anger yo ).

Speaking of tilt : had a discussion with a buddy the other day in which he was stating that tilting after a loss is simply normal ; a statement to which I vehemently disagreed, linking the act of tilting to underlined issues like anger, entitlement or whatever other existential defilements. Granted, having problems is ohhhhhh so human, as is denying them, tbh, or simply brushing them as being meh, standard, but not for self-aware peeps that look to improve their beings

This really came as a surprise, but as I was scrolling through my 2018 results (probably looking for some sort of comfort ), when I stumbled upon 2 delightful stats : I made 77$/h and 37$/h playing 1-2 PLO in Dawson and Vancouver respectively Pretty cool when I would of happily accepted 20-30$/h given that entertainment/hanging out with friends was the priority

As far as my spiritual journey goes, I probably will not do an ayahuascan journey in Vernon - but who knows… -, as I have the grind on my mind along with some tourism shyt I want to do. I have booked a meditation retreat in Barcelona for Xmas and might go do a 10 day in Alberta in a couple of weeks of time... But again, who knows, as I will take it as it comes.

Boring Fracking Redneck Towns

Ehhhhhh Vernon is quite the uninspiring place With all its motels, hotels, suburban feel and lack of originality... If only I had not prepaid my hotel for a week Or had a car so I could explore the surrounding Kelowna, Osoyoos, Oliver or Penticton... It reminds a ton of Whitehorse in the sense that the downtown core is dreadful as can be (think alcoholics, junkies and an industrial look to the buildings), but if you get around and explore what the Okanagan Valley has to offer (a ton of lakes, mountains and vast nature side), then it makes the ugly redneckish city (almost) worthwhile yo

Anyhow, there is still some distractions easily at my dispolal like catch a couple of movies, take advantage of my hotel's spa and pool, go for a massage, find some (hopefully) interesting restaurants and rent a car to go explore the aforementioned valley I did catch up with my buddy yesterday but since he had to leave for a few weeks, I will most likely just focus on the grind, studying and catching up on movies/tv shows.

Speaking of da pokerz, it is taking everything just to squeeze out a few dollars lately And since that my account is depleted and that they have added a 2.5% deposit fees for debit cards (my only option), I have moved down to 200z in the hope of net having to click that deposit button

Da Cold Grey Skies

Got a couple of beautiful early 30s ladies to smile at me - one was drop-dead sexy and I almost melted when I glanced into her eyes -while wandering through the cold streets of Vernon (7c/44f) to get to this Japanese restaurant It is good to get out of Dawson and see more ladies to chose from, if only in dreamlike fashion at this point

Still having a tough time with variance and whenever I see myself get ahead with the monies, I see my AA get cracked by an unsuspicious 44 (or AK, for that matter) that GII somehow AIPF for 150bbs I am handling it like a champ - sleeping like a baby, no changes in my mood -, yet part of me fears the eventual possibility that I will maintain this downswing or a B/E stretch until the WPT and brick all the events No matter how much I have made thus far in 2018, Because of the uncertainty of this career and no matter how much I have made thus far in 2018, we can never sit back, stretch our legs and expect the monies to roll on (they are planning some cuts in the RB next year, so my hourly could dip in the 2 digits hourly, who knows ).

I booked an AirBnB for next Monday in Nelson AKA this smallish hippie town that has WAY more personality than Vernon

Unexpected Monies

Interesting turn of events in the virtual poker realm today as I woke up to an extra 1.6k in RB which I don’t know for the life of me where it came from... followed by a 1.2k 4th place cash in a freeroll MTT I believe that the tourney might of been one of those AIPF freeroll, but whatever, ship me the monies yo

Of course, I do need some unexpected monies popping out of nowhere lately, as stuff like this continues to happen which has me (almost) pulling out my hair

-AIPF with AA vs KJs and flop comes KKK ; of course the turn is an A just to tease me a little before bricking off the river

-After I 3bet squeezed with KK and got called in 1 spot, flop comes K9x and I bet-call it off vs KJ…. Turn is a Q and river a 10, obviously

-This was the biggest WTF moment where I had the nut fullhouse with [B]K8o[/B yet still lost. After it went X-X on a KK4s flop, I again X the 8s to then raise villain’s bet ; he tank-calls. The river is an innocent looking 5s ; I shove, villain snaps with (67ss). Ohhhhh the numerous and numerous lulz  This one did have me cracking up out loud as, even if I had my fair dose of AA < AK or KK < AK or AA < 44 these last 2 weeks, nothing threw me for a loop as much as this hand

Anyhow, looking forward to my time in Nelson, followed by…. I am not sure by what yet, but something like in the Rockies in Canmore then a few days in Calgary stationed by some live PLO action could be enticing…

Clicking Away Da Monies

Pretty pitiful sight to Dubnjoy000's world today There I was, clicking nonstop on my computer when my 3.5k virtual BR slowly started to get inexorably dissipated - ehhhhh can my KK hold up once, JUST ONCE, vs AK in 1.2k+ pots - until the reality settled in that I needed to make a deposit AKA the first one in 2 years+ Down to 6 tables at this point, I found my debit card, multi-tasked my way into making a deposit on my laptop while clicking away on my monitor... but alas, nothing worked Not any of my 3 visa cards, not one of the other deposit options, FML. Now down to 4 tables of 200z (yeah, could no longer afford 400z), I get a hold of my bank... of my 2nd bank... we can't locate the hiccup, meanwhile, a couple of hours later, am down to my last 2 tables, I can't win for the life of me while this awe too familiar heavy - yet somehow sweet - feeling of depression settles in...

After phoning a buddy up in Dawson and trying a smaller amount, the deposit goes through I sure do hope I will be able to turn this downswing sometime soon... Will rest and catch a few movies in bed tonight.

Vertical

You gotta do wat you gotta do to survive, right... Which means 6 tabling for me right now, integrating more tables of 200z and paying attention to all the action at hand... I did runaway from obvious yet marginally profitable squeezing spots (to my dismay as I would of hit the nuts, of course ), which I should still take, granted, especially given that I am not tilting and could reload my account if need be... Albeit is not easy to deposit/move around 5 figure sums, be it live or online

It becomes hard at times to draw a line in between an upswing and a downswing... I mean, in the grand scheme of things, I have been on ONE LONNNGGGG UPSWING YO, given that poker is one long session And when we look back at September, I had a positive month, am in the black for October, yet this emotional doubt has settled in... Perhaps that line drawn in the sand is an emotional one moreso than based on short-sighted sample sizes...
