The Aftermath

Busted 254 (or 255...) just outside the 250 making the monies I had perfect position at my table, having the 2 chipleaders to my right and 2 shortstacks to my left (one that had a virgin hendonmob and did not play a single hand for 90 minutes, as folding his way to the money was seemingly a priority for him). Anyhow, the min cash was extremely important given the payout structure : 100-250 would get 10k, 85-100 would get 12.5k So obviously, such a spread out min-cashing layer made squeezing our way in the money that much more important, but I still was going to apply some sort of pressure on the bubble, despite playing very tight pre. And the situation presented itself to me when the button (chipleader who had been playing 50-70% of his hands), opened for 2bbs (he is raising in this spot 100%). I wake up with A9 which is obviously a TITANIC monster in this spot Like a midieval monstrous legend or something I was going to shove much lighter, even if we are a few spots off from cashing and especially knowing that the BB is folding literally anything not KK-AA
Spoiler:
button had KK and I could not hit my 30%

Looking Forward

Might look back at my Party Millions run in the next few days, but in the meantime, I will leave behind questions like "was it better to nit it up and pass on a 100% guaranteed min 5 figure cash..." (even if I have looked into the spot with a few pros already who backed my aggressive line...) and focus on what lies ahead, challenge-wise, for the next 2 months in "La Belle Province"...

- Poker Goals : Aiming at 25k and 30-35h weekly. Unlike the past 3 years, I will probably not do a Dawson summer challenge and thus cut down significantly on my volume (and improve life quality/happiness factor ). The grind will remain my priority, but integrated within a balanced lifestyle. I will be playing very little live (perhaps 3-4 times in total), as I care progressively less for live cash games.

- Studying : Spanish will gobble up the bigger chunk of the time, albeit I will take it very slowly, both with poker (1-2h weekly) and Spanish (3-4h weekly). I prefer to not overwhelm myself with studying, as I REALLY DON'T FRACKING LIKE IT, even if the end goals obviously justify the effort invested

Exercise : I will be located 2 minutes walking distance from a private lake, so outside of some passive canoeing and swimming, I will get back to jogging every second day for 1-2kms. I would like to play some tennis weekly, but will not go out of my way to find a partner/courts. Will also maintain 2h of meditation daily (this has been trivial for 2 decades now) and a semi-vegetarian diet.

Travelling : I will be located just south of Mont Tremblant, close to a ton of lakes, hiking trails, spots to explore etc. So I plan on taking fully advantage of it, along with a few 2-5 day trips up north (Abitibi), as, as much as I know B.C. and the Yukon out west, much is left to be explored for yours truly in Quebec

Dating : I do not have too high of expectations in this area, but will ask a waitress out at The Playground, I have 3-4 friendly dates lined up with exes/previous casual friends (probably not much will come out of this, as they are all in serious relationships now...), will check out the single scene in Ste-Agathe and grind the local dating sites (seems not very promising though...). I really don't expect to change my single status until I make it back to Europe and look into settling down...

Back to Normal

The sting of my 5 figure bubble of the Party Millions is all but shaken off at this point. It does help tremendously that my AirBnB chalet is absolutely great and that I managed to not only erase completely yesterday's 3.3k downswing, but book a small profit in the process I mean, it is crazy the amount of times you have to pick yourself as a pro following a bad defeat (or as a serious rec)... But it is in times like these that you got to remind yourself how good you have it... My life is going great, I have had perhaps my best year ever as far as not only the game goes, but travelling, my spiritual journey, my inner peace, women/people met etc. Things are good folks

On another note, odds are I will not manage to make it through my 2 months in Quebec without getting a speeding ticket... I do practice safety (like not respecting the speed limit in residential areas/school zones), but man am I a speeding bullet on highways Like think 40-60kms over the limit Was stuck in some traffic on the highway today (doing 120kms and unable to separate myself from the pack), when I saw an opening on the right, took it, had to come back in the left lane, only to notice that the dude that I passed - did not cut him by any means -, is in my bumper, pissed off as hell When he gets a chance, he criss-crosses in the right lane, tries to CLEARLY cut me back in the left lane, but dude does not realize that when you are trying to execute such an exploitative move, you open yourself in being exploited yourself : before he manages to cut me, I see an opening in the right lane (that he is leaving), take it, SPEED THE F**K UP, and pass him before he can cry foul Yup, definitely am getting a speeding ticket soon

Looking forward to the next 2 months over here

Town Life

Still getting into the swing of things up here in Les Laurentides, but managed to put in a satisfactory 4h+ online - albeit not results wise... Will look to enlarge my social circle over here ; I still have a ton of friends in Montreal (and family close to here), but do not plan on going to the city more often then 2-4 times monthly... If not, I know no one in town (outside of my cousin). I did speak with a pretty cashier at the grocery store (will work my magic in the next few days ) and plan on finding a comfortable cafe/restaurant to go write in the afternoon (with a pretty waitress, obviously ). If not, will find a vipassana weekly group sit (there is bound to be one or more, as there many hippies in these parts...).

Darn, I really thought the Raps had a fighting chance I mean, the fact that they were 2 to 1 favourites at the beginning of the series was lol and I would of bet against them if I had the to do so... Which I didn't, unfortunately... But why oh why do we need to get destroyed year after year by Lebron It is painful and embarrassing, to say the least

Dreams (Shattered)

When I was playing the 600$ satty for the Party Millions ME, I engaged conversation with my neighbor throughout the SnG. The fellow was from Sudbury (spoke French and English), is a redneck that has worked with his hands all of his life (was seemingly in his late 50s...) and was a perfect portray of a rec player. He spoke of his retirement plans (which he seemed to be behind the curve financially) and how it was possible to take down the ME and bink a 7 digit score I mean, he was happily buying into the dreams that the WPT or WSOP tv coverages had sold him. I mean, we all do... With our sports teams... Or dreaming that it will work out with this or that new girl... With our obsessive tendencies of shaking off a nasty life bad beat by always looking forward... By always shrugging off the threat of death, of decay...

I definitely have a rec mentality when I am shot taking live MTTs. Dreaming of that elusive final table, and how glamorous the 6-7 digit score would be... Or by (innocently) thinking that this is the year that the Raps will get by Lebron... Of course, I am a professional gambler and thus acutely aware of my illusions. But when that fellow was sharing with me his dreams of a deep run, I simply listened... And avoided telling him that I am pro (which would of created an obvious gulf in between us). Instead, I told him that I use to be a chef (which he failed to notice the past tense), thus not creating such an obvious rift in between our livelihoods/lifestyles (or opening up a predator/prey dynamic...).

Montreal is indeed a great city. I believe that 3 clear "to do" stuff stands out :

- Music : both the French and English musical scenes are the nuts. I went to see a ton of gipsy-reggae-alternative-Franco French bands back in my Uni days, but the English scene is equally as thriving. I remember reading an article from the New York Times years back about the underground English musical scene and how amazing bands were breaking through, most notably at my local bar that I would hangout on a weekly basis I was mesmerized, as what was for me a casual and convenient place to get drunk/play some baby foot/catch some live bands, was a cultural happening for others.

Food : I never really got to experience enough of what Montreal's cuisine has to offer, as I was a broke student when I was living in the city, but to do down Tripadvisor's list would be a blast. I do check out a variety of restaurants nowadays, but alas, I do not intend on spending much time in the city this time around.

Tamtams : This one is a must. The Sunday drum circle (about 50-100 drummers) is the biggest in the world. Bigger (by far) then the one in the GoldenGate Park in San-Fran. On a sunny day, 5-10k peeps gather up on the lone mountain in Montreal (called Mont-Royal) and chill in the sun, smoke up, play hackysack, juggle, dance away or perform other stuff. And because there is a ton of hippies/nomadic travellers that perform street performances, the acts are pretty incredible

Summer is Here

After the absolute disastrous 3 days to start off the week - Bubble in Millions, 2 Raptors loss and a 16k Millions/online/sports betting downswing -, am riding an upswing once again (about 7k over the past 3 days, and +25k in cryptos in the past 2 weeks ). It feels good. And also highlighting how of an amazing winter I had both on and off the felt

There is a mini-series at the Playground in mid-May that I will partake in strictly for entertainment purposes. The BIs are tiny but the games are fun as a hell : I will play 2 bounty tournaments, a 330$ PLO reentry and a 6 max 220$. Both start at 7-8pm, thus not interfering much with my online daily grind.

Looking to find some mushrooms for a potential fun evening with a few buddies ; when I originally suggested it to my buddy, it went a little like this :

- "You want to do some mush bro?"

- "Lol, I am WAAYYY too old for that friend "

- "Yeah, you are ".

I mean, whatever happened to the 90s, right, when acid was plentiful, mushrooms by handfuls I am not that set on doing them as much as I want to do another ayahuasca journey, but it would be fun, albeit only for recreational purposes...

Different Stages of Next-Day of Raps vs Lebron Depression Syndrome

-Stage 1 : "I ain't never f**king going watch ever again this blasphemy of a stinking team

- Stage 2 : "OK, Lebron will be 1 year older next year and the Raps younglins will grow in experience..."
Spoiler:

There are quite a few friends that I have not seen for years in Montreal, so will probably try to meet up with 1 a week for dinner then go to the casino afterwards kind of thing... But given that I don't really want to grind 2-5 NLHE that much, I might have fun with the 5-5 PLO game at the Playground, even if my equity is much smaller in the 4 card game... Might as well splash around, right, as I do prefer PLO for the entertainment factor (not so much for the profit factor...)

Met up with my family in Ste-Adele for brunch today, and darn, that hippie chick serving our table was absolutely amazing I might have to come back this week and go write/have some coffee over there, even if it is 30 minutes away

Northern Routines

It nonstop rain came to a halt, the sun finally found a few cracks to breakthrough, spring seems to have followed suit and a semblance of routine is slowly settling itself in my life here I did my first Spanish course in ages today (darn, have lost some espanol knack since not being totally immersed and it does not help that me and my teacher spoke half the course in French ), found a decent dating site and will go ask that gorgeous hippie chick out in Ste-Adele Also am organizing some night outs with buddies and am looking forward to those 2 live tournaments and PLO games All good stuff yo

A little bit like Dawson, the towns in Les Laurentides have kept most of La Nouvelle France appeal with its 100-150 years old architecture buildings/houses for tourism purposes, even if the latter has yet to begin, as a few of Ste-Agathe's restaurants/cafes are still shut down. There are quite a few restaurants I am looking forward to try, and when factoring in the options in Mont-Tremblant, St-Sauveur, Ste-Adele (darn, so many saints, one might funk that we were Christians or something ), I will not get bored anytime soon, yo

In case you have not noticed by the increased size of my swings recently, 400z has become my main game And because the crypto swings have desensitized me somewhat, the variance @ 400z is peanuts in comparison (as well as playing highstakes live MTTs ). So it makes days like today where I plunge 1.5k deep in the first hour of the grind and my ensuing 2.7k rise from the grave, look almost benign

Heureux d'un Printemps

Been planning evenings with buddies which is well needed, as despite me really enjoying the sunny spring weather and this sweet chalet and all, I really miss travelling and the adventure that comes with it... Darn, it will be hard for me to settle down - if ever -, given my perpetual desire to explore...

Was listening to the Barry Greenstein podcast on the Joey Ingram The Poker Life Podcast

http://joeingram1.podbean.com/e/lege...-life-podcast/

which is absolutely GOAT. Love how he has been around since the beginning of times, is humble, has known tremendous swings, has missed out on the riches of the Amazon boom, the Macau games, the Larry Flynt ones, has great Tom Dwan insightful stories etc. Definitely one of my favourite ever poker podcasts, given that he is one of my favourite poker characters (I prefer the humble ones like Galfond, Haxton etc.) and has survived the grind for soooo loonnnnngggg, which obviously speaks for itself.

I started my Spanish courses again, reading Cien Anos de Soledad in the evening and falling asleep to Spanish speaking movies (Sin Nombre, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Elite Squad 2). Also looking forward to playing some live again next week, even if it is just a small tourney

Random Thoughts

Funny how I find myself excited for the upcoming 330$ Reentry PLO live tourney next week ; I mean, it is considerably below my normal stakes and even if I would have a potential ROI of 100% (which I probably have closer to 50-80%...), it would still be a considerable net loss compared to my virtual grind... And yet I am WAY more excited about it than clicking buttons online Part of it is getting out of the routine... Playing a new game... The excitement of MTTs...

Speaking of which, I found myself contemplating my passion for playing a few 2-5k live tourneys and my pursuit for glory... I mean, that is what it is, a vain pursuit of glory... If I was only thinking in terms of equity, I would stick to playing online and nothing else. In fact, any live games that I play considerably lowers my hourly (making 150$/h online). And yet, setting new goals, new challenges entices me more...

Am sitting in the cafe where the previously mentioned cool hippie chick works at, but, alas, the timing (almost closing time for this shop) is not ideal to ask her out, I am afraid... This said, I will be coming back for a couple of visits next week Too bad it is a good 35kms/25 minutes away though... Women

I find myself 2nd in a rakerace (best finish to date 3rd), which speaks both of my increased online volume in La Belle Province and my time invested in the 400z player pool I have a legit shot at first, but still plenty of time remaining in May...

Yeah man, indeed, GOAT movies Have you checked out Elite Squad 2? (Portugese, not Spanish, my bad). It is a Brazilian flick very similar to City of God - and perhaps better, me thinks... Elite Squad was half-arse decent and I guess better to watch it first if you are going to check out the sequel, but this is the clearest (and very rare) example of a second movie being EXPONENTIALLY better than the first one.

(Existential) Forks

Met up with this girl that I had a HUMUNGOUS crush on back when I was 18. We had not seen each other for 20 years. She looks as good as she did back then : slim, hot, sexy body, with her long blonde hair drifting all the way down to her curvy and meaty arse and her big blue eyes as round and emotional as ever and this even after having 2 kids Anyhow, our (strictly) friendly encounter brought back a ton of memories...

I grew up in Laval, in the suburbs just north of Montreal. If French Canadians are prompt to experience with drugs/alcohol/cigarettes (think 12-13 for girls, 13 for guys), I was nonetheless surrounded by a bunch of preppies, even if my bestest of (grunge) friends lived in Montreal.

There always has been a dichotomy - since the beginning of times - in between political point of views (think liberal vs conservatives), but none as visibly manifest as expressed through teen fashion. Think greasers vs preppies. And an alternating sub-group replacing the former (beatnics, hippies, punks) throughout the ensuing generations, while the darn preppies seem to always stick around, generation after generation... Anyhow, when I turned 18, I was spending most of my time in the grudge/alternative bars in Montreal, while the Laval preppie influence of wanting nice wheels and aligning pretty much with your normal consumer and conformist lifestyle, was visibly behind me... except for that chick, that is, with whom I was spending lots of time despite our penchant for clearly different interests...

Things might of been different if I did not meet my eventual gf, an open-minded hippie chick that would go on to influence me immensely in terms of world views, style, cinema, politics etc.... Things might of taken a turn of its own if I dug deeper into those blue eyes of that Laval chick, settled down with her, had a normal job, indulged in your standard suburban ambitions... Instead I engaged on a different route and only saw those heavenly eyes a couple more times - when mine were red af, high as a kite At times, you look back, contemplate the road that was, the one that could of been, and how both extend to diametrically opposite and irreconcilable horizons...
Spoiler:
and darn am I ever happy that I took the red pill and not the blue one
Spoiler:
albeit that with time, regardless of the colour you took, it all becomes a bit purple, as bridges are crossed and concessions reached...

Had a really fun player @ a couple of 400z tables today, the kind that you simply have to play against and embrace the high variance involved (he 3.5x pre, 3bets > 25%, pots postflop etc.) ; unfortunately got smacked in the face with some run bad, tilted, lost 2k in the process, went for a run outside to shake off the steam... but alas, the tilt stuck like a clingy fracking slinky

Another good week in the books, despite the uncooperative weekend that put hurdles in my plans of crossing the 5 digit threshold... But of course, if I was to rewind a week and had the choice of a Yay or Nay decision of a guaranteed-albeit-restricted post-RB 4.7k profitable week to come, I would snap-accept Also happy with the 30h volume and this will be my weekly aim for the next couple of months, along with 1h of poker study and 3h of Spanish

I mean, how can The Raps get swept in 4 games and the Cavs go ahead and get smacked for a 25 point loss vs the Celtics in game 1... FML It must be the Lebron curse or something, as there is no way Toronto loses to Boston in a 7 game series... Either way, I had put 400$ on the Cavaliers which obviously burnt in fracking flames Did I ever mention that I am terrible at sports betting At least the Winnipeg Jets won game 1 vs Las Vegas in the NHL and Canada still has something to cheer for... It had been quite some time since online poker has made me tilt like it did this WE... I am usually an absolute professional in handling my 1-5k daily virtual swings (not so much with live MTTs though ), but getting the worst of it in 1-2.2k pots vs the maniac when I oftentimes had the best of it (lost AA < JJ in that 2.2k, AIPF), simply had me (symbolically) banging my head repeatedly against the wall
Spoiler:

Speaking of tilt, is Dwane Casey the first coach ever to win coach of the year and be sacked a couple of days later... I mean, how ironic of an outcome is that

even moreso ironic for fans that root for the Toronto Raptors or, you know, other teams that win the championship after moving out of Quebec, like, you know - cough-cough - the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado or Montreal Expos/Washington

It feels so much better to come storming out of the gates at the start of the week, doesn't it Also am getting into the swing of things as far as my routine goes, enjoying my little remote grinding nest, feeling comfortable within my present schedule etc. Am probably not going to score much in terms of dates or as far as women go in La Belle Province (am presently setting the over/under at 0.5 for reaching home base on a date here...), as I have presently turned my (chatting) attention towards Europe for potential gfs... Which is more logical, me thinks, given my long term plans seem to be aligning towards the Old Continent... I have also been ruminating about potentially going back to Asia for a 1 month meditation retreat and hence visit countries I have thus far skipped (namely Myanmar and Japon). Asia is also a hell of a fun place to be single, albeit I would not want to spend too much time there again...

Films have been really disappointing in 2017-18, me thinks, so my attention is turn towards the tv world. Westworld is obviously GOAT, Legion is intriguing, but I have been dwelling my attention in some lesser quality shows as well - we can't watch Mr Robot all day-everyday, right... if not I would - with stuff like The 100 and Gotham. The last amazing film I watched, was Wind River, a 2012 flick about a Native American young woman found frozen. It exposes the typical native social issues (alcoholism, conjugal violence, rape etc.) through the prism of an amazing camera, a solid character development and a slow evolving narrative. GOAT. Elite. Especially for someone who likes the north, slow movies and fracking intensity like yours truly

On my way to the casino to bink that 330 PLOr ; I am up 6k this week and I do hope that a bad run in a small tourney will not tilting the living shyt out of me
Spoiler:
even if I know that it potentially will

2 + 2 Cards

I squeeze in 4h of online (made 1k or something) before putting me pants on, me shirt, stuffing me dirty clothes in a bag (no laundry machine at me chalet, so me Mom's laundry machine it is ) and jump in me van, 165kms str8 ahead direction Montreal yo
Spoiler:
For the record, I believe that the presence of speeding cameras on the highway might actually reduce the likelihood of getting caught for speeding...

But here is when everything goes awry : I miss the exit for Pont Mercier, take Pont Champlain, wing it instead of asking for directions/entering it in the apple map (much funner to guestimate our way, right ), end up going in circles, squares, triangles or whatever whatchamacallit shape for 45 minutes and arrive 70 minutes late with only 10 minutes to go for reentries I mean, I was going to fire away On all cylinders, that is. As I noticed that accepting the fate of going busto-pronto is a tremendous advantage in putting on pressure (AKA more fold equity), pursuing all +EV spots, pushing our equity and feeling just plain more confident, yo But, alas, such was not my destiny

I am really happy with how I played, despite not having a TITANIC edge over the rest of the field (I mean, it is hard to not be in the top 5% percentile in a low stakes live tournament, but it is not as if I have a deep understanding of omaha boards/dynamics/range advantage/bet sizings like I do in holdem). A couple of hands come to mind where I successfully trap-called a maniacs UTG open with AAss, only to induce the tilting fellow to my left to 3bet, get UTG to call and back-raise-shove 50bbs
Spoiler:
to hold up vs weak QQxx
Only other golden spot that came up afterwards, was a pure ICM edge where I 3betted anA blocker vs an UTG medium stack on the pure bubble where he could only continue with KKxx or AAxx given the other shortstacks
Spoiler:
he unfortunately 4bet shoved KKxx and I sigh-folded
. Anyhow, really happy with my play and my 4th place 1.1k finish, even if I did go out in spewy fashion at 2am, with fatigue getting the best of me Omaha is such a fun game, especially MTTs

Will most likely play the 220$ 6 handed on Monday.

Dichonomy

In one prism, there is meditation. Self-control. Eating (relatively) healthy. (Some) exercise. Emotional balance. Acquiring knowledge. Eternal intellectual curiosity. Respecting mother nature. Being a minimalist. Traveling the world. Being an outside observer. Keeping the self in check.

In another, there is a ton of coffee being consumed, the adrenaline rush of clicking buttons across 8 tables, going all-in like a mama-fracking gangsta yo , X-Raising the living shyt out of this f**king juvenile-balla-wannabe , beating up old ladies , riding the crypto swings until the end of tides , f**king, running, executing tasks faster than a speeding bullet, yo

And how do this seemingly diametrical opposite entities coexist... I don't know... call it the nuances of human nature... Controversial... But in the end, our self is not a duality or a saint-trinity, but random and independent multiplicities, even if the former can be ultimately dissolved...

Took a 2.5k hit today or so, but given that I released a decent amount of RB, it ended up as a wash. Am tired though. I was pushing for 6h, but fell short of the 5h mark, exhausted as frack, dipping into C game territory and ultimately waving the virtual white flag in favour of joining back the outside world …. Yup, I am fracking old!!! Met up with some friends that I had not seen in 10 years yesterday, and…. well, needless to say, but the years have gone by…. And are reflected through the presence of little kids running around (for some), grey hair (for my buddy) and white whiskers blossoming in our beard (for yours truly). I mean, given my age and all, I am impressed with my cerebral capacity to crush online at a decent middle-age volume clip And it is in all humility that I state this, as without vipassana, none of this brain power would be possible +5k in 27h online and +800 in 5h live

Peace
