Ooooofff, finally a winning day

*For those of yous not familiar with the word oof, it is a fracking interminable sigh of relief that naturally escapes our mouth, unbeknownst to us, when we feel that we can breathe again ; the latter is an official definition, obviously

Anyhow, booked 1.7k after digging a 1k hole yo

Am back in Prague for a couple of days before FINALLY making it to Spain Am looking forward to meeting that Romanian lady and in fact I have pretty much put a halt to all my other chat mates, as I all eyes are fixed on her We will see... On the other hand, I will be paying a staggering 150$/night for my AirBnB for my first week in Espana To rich for my liking, but Madrid is expensive af and I did want to book an appealing place to impress the Misses (has a gym, a rooftop patio etc.). Monthly rentals are seemingly more affordable on AirBnB (1500-2300$) for places I am looking into (nice & comfy, yet not an overkill of luxury).

That's it for now. Time for some pokerz and Spanish studying before some snoozes yo ✌️

The Start of a Spaniard Journey

I felt a little bummed out yesterday just before my Spanish course ; after all, not only had I taken yet another beating in the tune of 3k , but found myself stuck deeper in the midst of a never ending virtual twirling downswong I could already imagine myself answering the question “how are you” with an elaborate “meh” until it hit me : I have not had a Spanish course/spoken with my teacher since late June. All it took was an ensuing simple glance at my poker charts to realize that I am fracking up 140k since How f**king shortsighted and entitled one can become after a little run bad has been thrown his way

This said, I will be looking to cut my expenses moving forward ; 200$+ a day (again, all figures CAD$) will simply not cut it Of course, my lodging costs will cut down when I get a monthly place (especially if it is not in Madrid), but even if I can easily afford spending 10k/month and still manage to thus save 10k on the side, I do not know how my finances in 2019 will be. I do not have a boss guaranteeing me of 200k+ yearly. Nor one that reaches out to me and says “hey bud, take it easy this year, show up 20h weekly at the office and spend more time at home in pyjas, kick your feet up and I will write you a 150k check” Nope. Unlike most Canadian peeps, nothing is guaranteed. Especially not a retirement plan. Not that I am complaining - of course not, I am establishing myself with a cozy future living off my interests and perhaps even a government pension plan of 2k/month, if they still exist down the road… -, but you do not survive in the gambling world with a tunnel vision and staring down at your fracking feet

Meeting up with that Romanian lady tonight I am feeling more hopeful/nervous about this date than I have for a while It should be interesting. Or at least define what the next few weeks will bring

edit : hit it off pretty good, she is a soft, sensitive and a classy lady, but definitely not high maintenance like I had originally a little feared... We kissed, but it was never going to go further tonight ; she is a good girl, has never used drugs nor indulged in alcohol like yours truly

No 2 ways about it : variance is a complete utter mind-f**k As much as the first half of my virtual year was a walk in a park, the past 4 months would appear like a statistical anomaly if I did not know any better Which makes the perspective of certain poker noobs so lol (in certain PG & C threads) who state that losing 9 sessions in a row would be impossible for a winning player and a million times Ohhhhh, little do they know...

Am looking to go to Malaga (beach in the south of Spain) next week. It is cheaper than here, hotter and by the water ; sounds about right to me. Meh, that's it for now folks, am tired.

Made some of it back today, but am still running like shyt. I was up 2k before dropping half of it back to the total drooler You know that you are in a midst of a downswing when you are sweating AIPF swings like no tomorrow, right

There is something very peculiar about speaking in Spanish to Asian folks... The fact that we are (most likely) communicating in our respective 3rd language, makes the whole process a bit more curious... Anyhow, I love Spanish cuisine and all, but since I will be here for an extensive period of time, my default is still to head for Asian joints yo

I have pretty much made my mind up as far as heading down south to Malaga next week. And also as far as seeking a casual relationship with a lady as oppose to a long term one. I mean, I will take it as it comes and eventually look to settle down within a year or so, but that Romanian lady was my long shot as far as LTR goes for the time being
Spoiler:
We hit it off, kissed, but have not really followed through since... She is a very interesting woman, but I was kinda free-rolling the whole thing, not minding on which side of the coin flip the results would fall...

Ehhhh, my Spanish I find myself WAYYY more behind the curve that I initially thought I guess it always goes as such initially though : I arrive in a Spanish country, I engage in a long conversation and properly answer your standard questions like I have done so a few times, but then when I am put out of context in a more demanding and random social situation (like today in front of the pretty lady at the phone store), I lose all linguistic references, all powers of speech and find myself climbing back the evolutionary chain and alas, become a speechless fracking ancestral monkey Anyhow, all exaggeration put aside, I will include stuff like regular movies at the theatre and stepping outside my comfort zone to immerse myself that much more in the local dialect
Spoiler:
I got a date with a Colombian chick tomorrow which should be interesting, as she speaks no English whatsoever... Although she has not got back to me yet...

I am gradually figuring out my winter plans (something like Romania in February for Unibet Open ; Calgary, Canada for a 20 day meditation retreat in March ; and Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina for Spanish and Ayahuasca), but I can't figure out for the life of me if I want to head south to Malaga come Thursday, head to Barcelona, or even stay here in Madrid

I now find myself in a 7k upswing over the past 2 days which was really needed Also put in some decent volume after all last week after I found myself sitting with an absolute drooler at my table ; I was 300bb+ effective @ 400z with him, which forced me to play an extensive 210 minutes session
Spoiler:
unfortunately my AA got cracked after I raised 8bbs pre, triple barrelled on K106 5 2 no flush board and got looked up by 62o to lose a 2k pot I did eventually book a profit though, but still decided to quit the game when my fatigue level was simply becoming overwhelming

This is a really selfish request so feel free to tell me to f**k off...but for some of your travels can you list out your bookings and itinerary?

I want to start traveling more in 2019 but as an ignorant southern american I am clueless. I've started researching but it is information overload.

(Stuff like, flight to canada booked via travelocity: $2k, airbnb for 3 nights $150, etc.)

Just seeing 1 or 2 of your itineraries and what key sites you use would be a big help I think.

I find myself oftentimes planning my trip lately, as opposed to, you know, actually living it Of course moving to el centro de Madrid will help spice things up a little, as the suburbs will simply not cut it, be it Espana or fracking America : once a burb, always a burb

Well I don't want to do it on a daily basis, as I feel it would interfere with the flow of the narrative... But will happily list off a few recommendations here This said, I am really not one to budget for the past year and have been spending much more than my fair share Nevertheless, from the history of your posts, I do not think that budgeting is much of an issue with yourself as well...

So Long gone are the days of Dubnjoy of yore that would live on lesser than a shoestring budget by hitching everywhere, taking the bus for 3-7 days str8, sleep in parks or deserted beaches and itch out every millimetre of equity from every God damn situation spun his way Nope. Nowadays, I go with convenience. In fact, it wasn't until this week in Spain where I started telling myself "ehhhh, perhaps you should cut down on expenses little fellow, this is added up quickly and you are not going to bink a mid-5 digit score every month, you know " So anyhow, yeah, to get to that list of useful sites :

Tripadvisor : I'm sold to Tripadvisor man, much like I was back then to Wikipedia when it was first released. From the hotels, restaurants, the "To Do" section, reviews and numerous random threads that pop up, I enjoy what this site has done in the modern digital age (it could of been way - WAY - worse, much like poker could of suffered tenfold from someone else than Negreanu being the ambassador for poker, right ). I also participate in some reviewing myself, especially when I was more sedentary in Da Nang, Vietnam and exploring its culinary scene

AirBnB : Having access to apartments for mere days or weeks has also been a blessing for an online grinder that seeks the comfort of laptop workplace for the good ole daily grind yo Of course, a lot can be said about AirBnB and the gentrification that ensues in many areas... (but alas, I happen to be a beneficiary on that spectrum ).

Uber : Still new to Uber, but if it can avoid us from taking a taxi in certain countries and at half the price, then wow, yeah, by all means, all the power to us

Google Flights : Now, before I promote the latter, let me (virtually) cry out loud, that I f**king hate google. With a passion. As a cyber aware fellow that cares about his privacy, I rarely fall for the devil’s temptation that is this giant f**k face (Hints : Duckduckgo for search engine, Epic or Safari for browser, Protonmail for emails etc.). Yet… I sold my soul Everything has a price, right, and the $$$ tag on my ever lasting soul, was the convenience of seeing that google calendar pop up, having within a click 30 days worth of the lowest daily price on a single page Like I said, convenience. And rapid. Of course, when you sell your soul to the devil, there are tremendous side effects (think Tsunami-like-ripples that trembles until the end of times ) : google only lists airlines that consent to pay them in advertisement, of course. So oftentimes you will not see the cheapest flights offered by local airlines. The devil, I tell you, that fracking Capitalist Warlord that conquered us all without mercy

Anyhow, yeah, I have been spending north of 5kCAD monthly lately, it is because of all this moving around, not booking a monthly place (even AirBnB will knock off 50% of the price tag) and not limiting myself.

A few last Notes : Be weary of online security when making purchases... I suggest using a VPN (or at least an encrypted firewall connection like safepay or other alternatives) ; double-check the potential fraudulent nature of obscure sights with a duckduckgo (not google ) search ; use paypal (or apple pay) over a credit card for virtual purchases ; take pictures of passport, purchases, addresses, hotel names, street names (and upload them on a cloud or USB stick) etc. Would be curious to where you are travelling to... Send me a PM if you do not want to make it public. Peace.

On Cafes and Downtown Areas

Finally moved to downtown Madrid where the buildings are pretty, the cafes numerous, and the restaurants plentiful yo Simple pleasures, I tell you, simple pleasures All this at half the price for the AirBnB. I have noticed that in Europe thus far, the AIrBnBs have been run by business as opposed to individuals, like it is the case in Canada... Not sure if this is the norm, but it will likely deter me from using them as often moving forward... (for (leftist) ideological reasons, of course).

My 80-20% are finally holding up when warranted yo The games have been decent lately, with me getting the God seat on the left of the drooler, grinding it for 2-3h, building up my stack, waiting for that perfect setup to play for stacks as a 80-20 favourite... GII, close my eyes... blink once or twice... open my eyes to see, alas my hand cracked Not today though... Not fracking today

Women

One could think that there would be parity in the distribution of beauty as far as the female gender is concerned across different Latino countries… I mean, they are all Conquistadores descendants, right, each entitled in their own rights to the potential of these ancestral aphrodisiac genes which could grant them the opportunity to fully blossom Of course, such a prompt conclusion would neglect a tremendous amount of history - ehhhh like the Native genocide - in Latin American where the Conquistadores mixed and matched (after conquering) with the Natives. It is nevertheless curious to see how women in Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela or Brazil are outrageously magnificent compared to the other Latino countries though... A lot of this is just variance, of course, but add Spain to the countries of amazingly otherworldly beauty Like tremendously so Perhaps even more than French Canadian women… but that is still up for debate...
Spoiler:
ehhhh don’t go tell my fellow Quebecoises ladies, but I think Spanish women are prettier

My date got cancelled for this afternoon. As it is oftentimes the case with online dating, people constantly pop-in and out of your life without a (minute’s) notice. I mean, it is fun and all to be single and to navigate freely the dating scene, but oftentimes you end up with your dick in your hand as there is no loyalty whatsoever with peeps constantly looking for the next best thing Nonetheless, it feels good to still have it (somewhat) despite being 41 The fact that that classy and pretty Romanian lady was into me, is heartening af That a smart, soft, successful, lovely lady - and not a gold digger or high maintenance by any means - is into me so much, is fracking amazing yo If she just had the flexibility to see me 2-3 times a week as opposed to only once, I would of stuck around Madrid. But such is not the case.

The route ahead is slowly defining itself : from Malaga to Barcelona with stops in Alicante and Valencia, I will head up the coast, rising to the occasion in casually dating ; stops in Italy and Malta might just be at the horizon before the tourney stop in Romania... Given that I will most likely be heading to South-America for 4 months in April, hence learning Spanish can be put on the back-burner yo Perhaps Colombia might be a sweet place to get into a LTR as well…

Slanted and Enchanted

Am on the train heading towards Malaga. Just kissed away last night’s date, AKA a Colombian chick with the sexiest lips to ever make out in this bottom-world Not sure if I want to invite her along to Malaga and hangout for a couple of weeks by the beach, or simply write it off as another evening… On one hand, she is kind, we get along smoothly, it would de wonders for my Spanish and her schedule is quite flexible… On the other hand, I kinda want to wait it out for a few days and see what lies ahead…

Learning Spanish has obviously been at the forefront of my studies, but I will nonetheless step back in the PLO lab this evening. I only open 4 card tables recently when the action is lacking at the 2 card ones. As I, alas, have to be honest with myself : if it was not for this 4 card game, I would not be stuck in the virtual realm for the past 4-5 month (PLO cost me in the neighborhood of 10-15k, which essentially covers my downswing). So anyhow, until I put in some work on my 4 card game and can thus apply the theoritical knowledge in practice, I will be on a PLO semi-hiatus.

Before being accepted for a 20 day vipassana course, my Canadian teacher insisted that I give my livelihood - AKA pokerz - some thought… Or just flat out fracking change career (but he put it in more civil terms, of course ). I answered with a lonnnngggg-winded message explaining how while da pokerz is not wholesome, it nevertheless has more similitudes with chess than it does with a pit game. I guess my email was convincing enough that my teacher ultimately thought that pokerz is not gambling

Spaniards are lively, cultivated and it is refreshing to see a ton - like A MYRIAD - of peeps strolling down the downtown streets. In America, it would be cars everywhere and the lone people on the sidewalk past midnight, would be obnoxious and drunk af. Here in Madrid, you see very little vehicles and mainly couples hand-in-hand, friends shooting the shyt, families gently roaming around etc. A sidewalk culture, one might say… This said, it is only once away from home that I realize how Canadians are fracking polite. Civil. Likeable peeps. The lack of cordiality in this machismo Spaniard upbringing can be shocking and fracking annoying at times

A quarter/mil seems to be out of the question for 2018, but we can still reach that elusive 225k mark though with a little bit of run good/absence of run bad. Time to get my head out of Latina women and back into the poker grind

Malaga is more touristic than I fathomed it would be… In a good way though, in the sense that there will be enough entertainment to distract me during my 9+ day stay over here, from the casino with its alleged 5-10 game, to the beach and its myriad of restaurants and shops in the day, to the nightlife where I can foresee making a fool of myself in a reggaeton evening while trying to pick up a chick It is a charming town… well city, actually, where half a mil peeps live.

I have figured out a fast and effective way of learning Spanish : fracking tv with Spanish subtitles If only I would of thought of this option of combining audio and reading beforehand… Anyhow, I have not watched tv in years, but will put in a concerted effort to watch 5h+ weekly moving forward, and perhaps even more if I can find some decent channels… It is a less demanding way of learning, as opposed to my standard Skype courses combined with educational exercises (which I will maintain for 2h weekly). But this whole tv ordeal should really - like F**KING REALLY - accelerate the process in unprecedented fashion yo

I am surprised by how much less I am paying for my housing over here as opposed to Madrid Well Spain is known for its affordability of living in Europe, so it makes sense that as soon as you leave the urban centres, life becomes that much cheaper yo. And of course, if I was to stay longer, I would seek out a quieter fisherman town or the likes.

Another area of my life to attack moving forward, is my weight loss bet : for some reason, I put on 2-3kgs unbeknownst to me in the past couple of months while barely blinking an eye When you reach a certain age - ehhhhh 40s -, and you let go of your awareness just momentarily, you are simply f**ked. That is it. No mercy : you become a balloon without fracking realizing it. A bloated f**king waste case

Nice video Yeah, part of the appeal of Europe for me outside of the obvious like the wonders of the cities over here and the food, is how lively the streets are. To each their own though, as when I think about Canada and the magnificence of the nature, it is simply uncomparable. Which reminds me... I was following Chuck Bass's latest PG & C and how he spent 2 months in Montreal without leaving the city to check out the rural areas... I mean, if you come to Canada, buy a f**king van, hit the road, go camping and explore the living shyt out of this HUGE country Even if Montreal is the GOAT city in North America, me thinks, you do not go to America for the cities. But you do in Europe. Or for sidewalks

I always enjoyed walking. Like a lot. From back in the day when crossing the country hitching implied that I would walk 5kms+ everyday, to nowadays where an appeasing sense of serenity is instilled in me while roaming and exploring around yo Such is not the case with every culture though. Like in Asia, for instance, where being seen publicly walking even for a block (as opposed to being in a taxi or on a motorbike) is perceived as a sign of poverty Anyhow, on both of my dates in Madrid, I was pleasantly surprised by how my missus would enjoy the aimless activity of wandering around as much as I did In fact, the Romanian lady went as far as enjoying walking in HIGH heels, go figure The simple stuff, right, the simple stuff As are most of the activities I indulge in on a daily basis. Meditation. Reading. Studying. Writing. Cafes. Restaurants. Poker. Movies. Basketball. Simple stuff. Add to this a classy smart lady, to satisfy that intellect of mine, and it is fracking heaven

Got some fun stuff lined up for this weekend like checking out the casino, going to catch Roma at the cine, going out dancing, perhaps… I thought about inviting that Colombian chick over here, but given that it would always remain a short-term thing, I find it more exciting to pursue a new interest in these parts. The thrill of the chase, right, where one can find more pleasure in the flirting process that involves dining, holding hands for the first time, deliberately gently touching the lady on the shoulder, holding her waist or exhibiting other clear signs of interest… Followed by the first kiss, that touching with more intent, the clothes falling off… To appreciate the journey, right, as it would be tooooo easy - and quite f**king boring - if the end goal only implied hopping on a plane and instantly reaching higher heights, right The journey yo

Learning Spanish has become agreeable again I guess that once you make it across the shock of the language barrier, you can settle in and experience daily life at (almost) the same wave lengths as everyone else yo Also, the process of improving oneself in a new dialect and to ultimately be able to communicate more smoothly, is gratifying af. I don’t want to get toooo much ahead of myself, but learning Italian next year could be really appealing…

Malaga is really a neat little place. I enjoy strolling along the beach, testing out one of the myriads of restaurants along the coast, checking out the monumental buildings in town, wandering down the alleyways… All stuff that the previous rebel me would of proclaimed “f**k this, let’s burn it down to the ground ” Well… not exactly, but it is quite ironic to indulge in bourgeois pleasures that would of been unfathomable years ago…

I might go check out the casino tonight, as it would not only be nice to potentially see some pretty ladies, but it would be nice to replenish my wallet. I still have about 4-5k in cash on me, but I would like to have enough for the tourneys in Romania without having to pay an additional 2-3% in fees for currency exchanges. Not sure how live MTT grinders can justify all these additional fees that involves a pricey hotel, numerous flights, expensive restaurants, unless they fully dipped into the travel experience… Disclaimer :

How was the game in Malaga? I never checked that out but about 45 mins down the road you have Marbella which should have some pretty decent action. Not exactly a cultural hotspot but there's a lot of money knocking around and always been some decent 2/5 and 5/10 when I've been there.

Gates of Zion

My Israeli lady friend just got back to me after a year of silence Pretty cool, as not only had I been thinking about her/wondering about her (emotional) whereabouts, but she had left me dry a year ago with a message stating that she was depressed af and overwhelmed with life negative EV Am very curious to catch up with her, as our realities are diametrically opposites : me being a sorta free-spiritied-professionally-poker-player-Buddhist-monk ; her being an Arabic-Israeli-professional-pharmacist responsible for the welfare of her family. Add to the latter that she is pretty, smart and interesting af, and my curiosity is naturally stimulated

I was wondering when I would - if ever again - go on a prolllonnnng head-scratching-smash-your-head-repeatedly-on-the-wall downswing… Something similar to last time, right, where 450k hands saw me drop 3k over a 5 month period when I was in Da nang, Vietnam Well, this is it folks I estimate (no hud) that I am at -5k over the span of 250k hands. And never - like fracking never EVER - would I imagined that it would be this easy emotionally Like not a f**king f**king dent yo. Of course, being up 215k for the year and 130k live during this downswong has a littttttlllle to do with my mental well being But still…

No game in Malaga and not sure to what extent I want to go out of my way to go check out either Torroequebrada (30 away) or Marbella (45m)… I love playing live cash games but mainly for hanging out, getting a massage, checking out the women at the casino… I might dedicate an evening to going down the coast, but laziness might simply take over, like it did in Madrid where the casino was a mere 20 minutes walking distance away (albeit I did go, but forgot to bring along my passport :rollyeyes

Man, I just quoted this from the Fishtankz thread wj, but can you chime in on your vipassana 10 day journey friend? If not here, in a PM… It can’t be overstated, but the most I got from this thread (or my travel blog), has been the opportunity to get the (emotional rewarding) feedback from the handful of people that tried a vipassana course. As you well know, vipassana (and ayahuasca) is the shyt man This said, I am kinda apprehensive heading into my 10 day service in Barcelona followed by my 20 day sit in Calgary in March… Well, I guess I am always reluctant when approaching the heavy workload involved in a meditation retreat, but the motivation is a little lacking this time around. Kind of ironic, considering that I could use a good dose of happiness EV that comes from deep meditation Life. And its paradoxes.

Hey Dubnjoy,

I've really been enjoying sitting on the sidelines of this thread and taking in the view---you're doing it in style and glad to hear you're still highly committed to Vipassana (I'm hoping to do another retreat next year/have been meditating an hour every day since my first retreat in 2015). I remember visiting Malaga some time back---what a wonderful part of the world. The Spanish know how to live! Basque country is certainly worth the journey up North (a bit different from Andalusia/love their punk and other things).

I meant on the currency exchange. I might go to Canada later this year, so could probably use some CAD, while I guess you have plenty of CAD and net euro's. I'm sure there are plenty of more posters that have euro's that need another currency.

So, keep us updated!

Xmas Mediterranean Style Yo

Streets are packed today as tourists have seemingly flooded the city for the Xmas Holidays... Which is a good thing, mind you, as surely there will be some organized activities to indulge in... I find myself a little bored lately, so will thus (force myself to) go out tonight, be it just at the cinema or trying to seek out a live music venue or a reggaeton club.

So I caught up with my Israeli pharmacist lady friend and we spoke of plans to meet up. Primo, she invited me back to Tel Aviv ; segundo, we spoke of meeting up in South-America in April to travel together for 2 weeks. I mean, she is gf material, mid-30s, cute, petite, smart af (like witty with a quick mind), very liberal and open-minded, professional, speaks 3 languages and would be open to learning more (like Spanish or French). I probably did not go in much details ITT about our fallout last year - or maybe I did -, but she now seems to be in a great emotional space And yours truly is a further year removed from his previous relationship, making him that much ready to engage in a new one. This one would requirement commitment though, as she does not want to live much longer in Israel (she wants to move to Europe and would happily do a 6 months Canada - 6 months Europe, as would I yo ) and our different nationalities would require to tie the knot, perhaps... Of course, it is way - like f**king WWAAAYYYYY - too early to think of such things, but I always look at the overall picture when I engage in potential plans

Ok, gotcha man. Yeah, I usually keep different currencies locked up in my sister's safe in Montreal (like 20k CAD, a few k in both Euros in USD$) for tournament buy-ins/trips in the USA or Europe (and this is part of my poker roll, although it is 4x too big right now, but I will be back in Canada to invest furthermore...), so I usually come in prepared for live events. I also have a sufficient amount on me for the HR in Romania, but grinding live in Barcelona can be a mini-goal as far as accumulating more Euros goes for a potential 2nd bullet in the HR But good idea though, thx, it will keep that in mind to post here (or in other threads) if I have a need for Euros

Let me know when and if you do come to Canada ; am always willing to meet up with fellow 2 + 2ers and can definitely trade some currency if need be

Always great to hear from the DR yo Glad you chimed in friend and it is pretty darn amazing that you have maintained the practice this long (we are outliers, as most peeps give up on the practice after the course out of lack of discipline), although it does not surprise me at all I take it you will do it in Australia? If I may suggest : if you have the time to serve a 10 day course prior to sitting one, it is simply the nuts Your concentration becomes so seamless after serving, thus making you go that much deeper in your vipassana journey yo
Spoiler:
and lest not forget ayahuasca
