Small Lulls

After grinding a tensed 3h session, I came down to town and got an hour massage ; the woman also practices acupressure and despite the lack of firm pressure, she knew which acupuncture spots to apply pressure in order to release that accumulated tension (I even fell asleep) Anyhow, it got me thinking that perhaps I will go for a 10 day retreat after Dawson... As much as I want to make 2018 about scooping in the monies and all, my body and mind need it I have also been seriously lacking in terms of exercise, which something got to give yo

A thought after binging the poker podcasts lately : what % of your BR would you put on the line if you could knowingly commit preflop with AA vs KK ??? Would you commit all of your BR as a 80% favourite? Half of it? As far as I am concerned, I would snap-fold if I had to commit all of my BR (am too old/it took me too long to get here), probably would fold half of my BR (again, I am eyeing retirement/have crossed the halfway point of my pokerz journey atm and no amount of monies would thus be life changing), but would definitely play for 25-40% livelihood stacks And you guys? I guess it is a matter of perspective, as if I was a younger chap just embarking on my pokerz journey, I would be all-in and beyond gangstas
Spoiler:
for the record, the question was asked to Jean-Robert Bellande who said that he would play 4 rollz

Another podcast thought : luv the Joey Ingram prop bets (think writing a novel in a month, 600k hands in 1 month as well (or was it...) etc.), but the most interesting one for me, is learning Mandarin in 1 year. Native English peeps have a tendency to be pretty fracking lazy when it comes to languages, as the world revolves around the anglo-saxon tongue , so pretty cool to see some of the highstakes peeps go out of their way to learn a new dialect

Thx for the compliments and chiming in Also found your PG & C after looking up your profile and will be following bro, GL

My numbers keep changing as I am adapting to this new reality of scooping monies after monies after... TBH, when I first set on this poker journey, my initial ambition was to make perhaps a steady 100-150k yearly (at the most), and engaged this 2 card game path as it suited my nomadic livelihood moreso than for the end results, but I never - NEVER - imagined making it this far So anyhow, my semi-retirement goals have hence adapted.

My current BR is in the mid-low 6 digits and would love to ultimately have a cushion of mid-high 6 digits, 1 mil+. Nevertheless, when I speak of retirement, I should specify that is more in terms of a smooth transition from poker occupying a decent chunk of my time, to being relinquished in the background in favour of stuff like meditation retreats, a more structured writing schedule and some volunteer work. I have been averaging 23h/week for 2018 (25h weekly when factoring in studying), so would like to see this number climb down (in 2-3 years) to perhaps 8-10h/weekly with more focus on the live grind/tournaments, as opposed to the more demanding multi-tabling virtual grind.

Pretty cool that we have had a similar path in this game Question : did you actually read this thread from the beginning, or just picked it up along the way? Just asking as with my never ending lengthy posts, am curious if peeps are brave enough to navigate their from the get-go when Adam and Eve were still

Thx! Although my PG+C has been a fail so far. I have plenty I can/want write about, but it's been hard to justify the time it takes to write up a long post. I'm def going to stick with it though and hopefully will build some momentum on the more frequent posts over the coming months.

I read the first few posts here, then skipped ahead and have read everything since Nov 2017. I've also checked out your travel blog.

As for retirement thoughts, that sounds like a sensible plan you have for your specific situation. I wish my number needed was anywhere close to yours, but these are the choices and paths we've chosen on our own unique journeys.

Keep crushing it!

I'd risk 75% of my net. Gamblers will degen gambol, always, but then again, mby not, the smart answer is to be smarter and make success risk-free. Although still could pop in 20-25% for good EV

Sucker Punch

Got smashed by nasty variance today Like kicked in the nuts, body-slammed to the ground and stomped repeatedly while I was desperately lying there, grasping for air And such has been my week thus far. Nonetheless, I was semi-expected this kind of run bad to show up at some point given that 2018 has been nuts in terms of run good As a reminder, I have yet to have a losing virtual week this calendar year with the lone overall unprofitable Monday-Sunday scenario involving 12k in live BIs at the Party Millions (still made money online that week). So anyhow, even if I run insanely bad this week, it would still mean only scooping in 5-8k when factoring in all my rake races and RB release ; how sick is that

Back to my run bad today : I did have to call it quits 30 minutes before the predetermined length of my session and lie on the couch, close my eyes and try to forget about this 2 card and 4 card game
Spoiler:
example of absolute run bad : drooler limps button (AK) I squeeze SB with AA, drooler #2 in BB calls (AJ), button min 3bets, I 4bet, BB calls, button min5bets, I 6bet shove, both call
Spoiler:
K on the flop, K on the river

Fatigue and burnout are starting to creep in, so after this week is done, I will most likely chill somewhat until WSOPC in Montreal... Of course, chilling probably implies 40h+ weekly in Dawson as pushing chips around in a 1-2 game with familiar/friendly faces, is one of my social outlets over there And then will look into doing a 10 day course and an ayahuasca (or couple of) journey(s), as I have some vipassana bros that conduct ceremonies in the Okanagan valley The goal is to put my hand on some doses and do a trip solo, but might join an organized ceremony if the vibe is right...

From my understanding, Unibet is definitely the nuts for playing micros. RB is around 30%+, games are soft (from what I read) and they really set a system in place for a few winning regs to climb up the stakes (unlike PS, that simply scoops in the rake and does not give a f**k if the games are borderline unbeatable/bad for the ecosystem). Come lowstakes though, 50z and 100z is more heavily raked and the games tougher to beat in proportion to rake/winrates. Once you climb up to midstakes, the games are (proportionally) soft and rake easily beatable (RB 50-70%). If only they had not cancelled the 800z highstakes tables (equivalent of 1k), I would be looking to move up but, alas, I might be looking to split my action on Party as well now that I am starting to think about climbing further up the ladder...

White Flags and 2nd Place Finishes

Ok, here is the gist of this week's rakerace in a few words : determined af, I logged in 7h yesterday, playing anybody and everybody's grandma HU in this 2 card or 4 card game like no tomorrow yo ; pulling bluffs out of my arse in desperate attempts to conquer the world ; swinging up and down, left and right ; a few k here, a few k there, a few k everywhere Anyhow, I pulled ahead in front... deluding myself in believing I am establishing a clear lead... eyeing the finish line... Hit the sack and called it a day.

When I woke up, I cut my session short (2h) due to creeping mental fatigue, went into town, had a few great conversations with amazing peeps I have just met here, came back, logged in and... I was fracking 2nd again, with my rival going at it like a fracking (youngster ) nutcase So that's it folks, I am waving the white flag But nonetheless, given that during this recent sprint both the first place - you fracking douche bag - and I have established an insurmountable lead over the 3rd place, so will be playing a more balanced 6-8h over the next 2 days and surrender 1st place and thus relinquish the extra 1.2k.

I never had much pro poker friends which has come as a curse for my personal development in the game, but a blessing when it comes to social interactions For starters, that rec whose dumping monies at the table (but can afford to), has become a friend, a kindred soul, a person who I can relate to despite sitting (figuratively and literally) on the other side of the table Of course, when I envision friendly rec players, I think of fellow Yukoners with whom I shared a similar (blue collar) livelihood, not the obnoxious players that can be found in the player pools of bigger cities. Anyhow, when I was chatting away for a couple of hours today with my AirBnB host (father of 3, really great fellow), it struck me how lucky I have been with meeting kindred souls along the path... So what I thought to be a negative outcome in yesteryears (not being more socially immersed in the pro playing field), actually turned out to be quite positive in meeting so many peeps from various backgrounds

The Journey

One of the most important aspects of my poker journey in these recent absolute run good times, has been to remain humble. To stay self-aware, focussed and concentrated within these MASSIVE swings and monetary changes. I am also observing in which ways I react emotionally.

If anything, meditation has shown me that change is not only intrinsic to life/matter itself, but that it can be a welcoming blessing if you know how to use it wisely. By personal growth, obviously, and understanding how to proceed in the right direction

This said, I have noticed a certain upgrade in my accommodation selection. Especially here in B.C. which saw me only twice spend underneath 100$ for a night (85$ for a motel and the homeless night where I slept in my car ) and a slight increase in my self-confidence when it comes to women (losing weight has also helped in that area and also found myself eyeing classier women ). And lastly, I have noticed depression creeping in when I immerse myself too much in the game, thus losing my own centre (of gravity) and balance with the outside world. The latter is not meant as a form of complaint - of course not -, but moreso as a behavioral cognitive assessment of my state of mind throughout these professionally years ; in fact, if you scrutinize the emotional arc of other top players who had a good run at it, they usually end up going through the similar stages of :

- passion/obsession for the game
- success
- disillusion combined with a sense of lack of purpose outside of monetary gains
- and ultimately quitting as a pro

On the other side of the spectrum though - and lest not forget -, the financial freedom that this 2-4 card game provides is like none other And of course, those hours spent grinding the line in kitchens are not lost upon me - I still get flashback nightmares in fact - as is the destiny of many friendly faces that have it much harder in a 3rd world surrounding And yet, even after factoring in the above, I oftentimes have a hard time to accept the luck of my destiny

It was very good to get a (figurative) pat on the back from my new buddy yesterday (and certain close friends in Montreal) when he stated how cool it was to get all this financial run good (despite the titanic stress that comes with it). An acceptance that alas, I do indeed struggle with at times.

We all have our peculiar stuff, right, which reminds me of my redneck woman friend in Dawson (works on a gold mine, drives a truck and has biceps the size of Mount Logan ) who suddenly fracking started screaming like a little girl one night when I was at her place : she had seen a spider I came to the rescue, simply killed the little bugger and said :

- "Now I am never going to mock somebody over their fears, as they oftentimes are quite irrational and stem from deep rooted childhood stuff and all, but that was f**king funny ".

New Grounds

The week has come to its completion Finished north of 10k (not sure how much exactly, as the numbers are overlapping (and can't be arsed to add them up right now ) and took a 5k hit over the past 24h ) and just short of 50k for July. Which is insane 4 consecutive weeks of 5 digits is a novelty for yours truly - I think... - and while it is great to let ourselves settle in the celebratory moment and all, it is time to move on to a new month, a new location and some new challenges yo

While I had a concerted decision to improve my 4 card game in 2018 (mainly for live purposes), I did not expect to be crushing 200z online The same cannot be said of 400z unfortunately, where some players do expose my leaks, but I nonetheless do play some HU/3 handed games at that stake (not so much 6 max). It has gave me a ton of motivation to further my skills, especially given that Phil Galfond's videos feel more entertaining than some of the academic material out there

Alright, back to Vic tomorrow, Van Wednesday and Dawson Thursday, which will give me 3 days to catch a movie at the cine, buy - yet again - some BTC, and splash around in the PLO game at Parq casino.

August Goals

Got into Vic today, brought back the rental car (no red light fine waiting, but I think I am 50/50 in getting it later in the mail ) and was even riding in the right lane on the highway out of fear of getting another ticket, a first Prior to my recent phone and red light incidents, I got caught speeding in the Yukon a few years back ; I was zooming at 175 in a 90km/h zone, slowed down to 145 out of precaution in a abrupt curve and subsequent turn, only to be intercepted by a WTF-is-a-cop-doing-in-the-middle-of-north-of-nowhere-with-his-Goddamn-radar scenario Dude came and let me know of what speed I was doing (over 55km/h is still quite a few points) but when he found out I was a Yukoner, he completely changed his tone, became friendly af and lowered my fine to only 14km/h above the limit (the lowest possible fine )

Alright, I will double-down on the studying in August (3h weekly) at the detriment of Spanish (1h weekly) as I want to improve my 4 card game (it has become the game of choice in Dawson) and revise some MTT scenarios in preparation of Montreal. I suspect that I will be playing against the Duhamels of the world in the Super highroller, so I do want to get my ranges back to a more intuitive level (so I can focus on other exploitative edges) ; I am not sure how I will differ from my normal fishy-exploitative lines in the 5k, given that I might not be seen as a MAWG rec player but as the pro that I am... TBD

So I have been playing almost exclusively HNLE @ 400z stakes and PLO @ 200z, which seems to be working to a charm given my disparity in skills in both Adding PLO to the grind also keeps me invested emotionally (funner game) while adding a much higher EV than expected yo

It took me a few minutes to figure out what you were referring to , but I assume that you mean when I write 200z and 400z... it is simply a stylistic choice (replacing the s with a z like in pokerz), but in hindsight, I can see how it could be misleading I have not played Zoom (or on Stars) for over 3 years now, but am seriously contemplating getting back on Party and hitting the 1k tables come 2019.

Confessions of a Socks Murderer

I am terrible. Like really terribad when it comes to small stuff like leaving personal items lying around the hotel room and ultimately forgetting them, or - just as an example -, putting my wallet through the arduous process of the washing and drying of a laundry load Or, as was the case today when I noticed that I have one - 1!!! - lone pair of socks remaining from the batch of 6 bought 2 months ago, for Pete’s sakes I mean, nobody is going to cry over the faith of mere socks, right, but it is simply indicative of my overall nonchalant attitude when it comes to material stuff. Besides, socks matter, even creepy socks :

I do not think I mentioned yet ITT - or have I… -, but my buddy will be getting married this spring in Cebu, which means Asia will naturally be my destination following my 3 month stint in Europe yo I have spent a ton of time already in SEA, so will be looking to visit countries that I have yet seen, like Japan (for sure) and a mix of Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmmar and I am still not sure which other to add to the list…. Any suggestions? Will look into it, but an island off the Pacific coast would be a great option… (price is not an issue). But I figure the biggest chunk of it will be in the Phils 1 month for the marriage (and visiting Boracay, Surigao and some small islands I have yet set foot on), 1 month in wherever my meditation retreat will be (Thailand would be the easiest destination) and perhaps another month split in between Japan and Pacific islands…. Will probably return to Europe for a 3 month stint for the ensuing summer.

We get 15 points in Canada. 4 lost to my iphone/GPS adventure, 2 to my potential (but very likely) red light incident, 2 for speeding in the Yukon (although I think I got those back…), but I am not really concerned about losing my license ; the gist of it is mainly that I knew that I would of tilted big time if I got caught again. I abide by this inner rule that if I am not capable of handling adequately the consequences, then I do not follow thru with the act. Yup, Buddhist wholesome stuff Or being old. Whichever.

Back in Van. TBH, I would of spent the last couple of days over here as well if it wasn't for my reluctancy - make that a stubborn and angry resistance - to pay 400$+ for Howard Johnson (and a thousand times ). I mean, even Patricia Hotel, which is your run down establishment located in eastern Van AKA the skidrow of Canada (with junkies and homeless people lining up the sidewalks like nowhere else in the country) and where you can get weekly and monthly stays, is priced at 250$/night I use to pay 290$/week 8 years ago when I stayed there for a month for the WSOPC and grinding low stakes pokerz professionally off a limited and very low 5 digit BR... F**k our lives

Darn, I always have so much on my mind and a ton of thoughts/contemplations I want to type away ITT... It must be all this travelling yo, thx for firing away the questions folks

Not sure about grinding tips, as for me, it was a slooooowwwww and steady grind up from 50z (when I first transitioned from MTTs) to 400z I basically moved up a stake a year, making 15-25$/h @ 50z (all figures CAD$) which was plenty for a backpacker life in SEA but I was nonetheless aiming for 100z and a more satisfying (and financially comfortable) 35$+/h... To 200z where I was fully content with my 65-85$/h, yet who doesn't want to move up and get the opportunity to face the END BOSS, right ... To 400z where my sick 250$/h gives me a chance to fire away @ highstakes MTTs and not worry about finances for pretty much ever Anyhow, tips...

Ehhh, studying fundamentals (as boring as it sounds, but moving up will not happen by magic), being rolled for the stakes and feeling comfortable with the swings (this was a biggie for me, as I have been rolled for a while, but was hesitant to take on some 2-5k daily swings, so waited until my emotional balance was keen on doing so as, in the end, it is all about happiness yo ) and learning population tendencies. The latter is also a biggie. Playing at anonymous tables, it is important to find those exploitative lines to print da monies yo Of course, other top regs will remember who you are (better to play GTO vs them), but as far as the rest of the hunting field, fire away yo

Hey man, despite having spent 4 winters in Asia and going to Thailand briefly a few times, it was always for the purpose of meditation retreats and have thus never really explored anything outside of BKK and Chaing Mai (and my inner being, of course ). I actually plan on going back to Thailand come February, but again, it will be for the benefit of a 20 day course. I would recommend to register right now for a vipassana course though, as they are oftentimes booked quite dearly in advance ; GL friend, looking forward to hearing back from you if you do engage on a 10 day inner journey

Hummmm, you had me pondering about this one... The one spiritual author that moved me the most when I was 20, was Carlos Castaneda. But, alas , it turns out he was - if not a fraud - a liar Speaking of which : did you know that Osho took a boatload of opium (60mg) everyday

Anyhow, as far as recommendation goes, I think Paul Fleischman's Karma and Chaos would perhaps be a book that would suit - I believe... - your rational and inquisitive mind, as it is a series of 4 or 5 spiritual/philosophical essays pertaining to how vipassana can help with mental illness, for instance, and his writing is both concise and poetic. He is also a quite advanced vipassana teacher (full pledged and from the US) and apparently quite charismatic (I have yet to have a course with him though).

https://store.pariyatti.org/Karma-an...an_p_4638.html

There is a couple of other Buddhist books that I really enjoyed, but I believe that they might of fell flat upon me without the magic of a vipassana course to relate to... Like the Dhammapada and The Teachings of the Buddha. Darn, I am looking forward to that ayahuasca journey now

There is a couple of other Buddhist books that I really enjoyed, but I believe that they might of fell flat upon me without the magic of a vipassana course to relate to... Like the Dhammapada and The Teachings of the Buddha. Darn, I am looking forward to that ayahuasca journey now
Thanks, dub! I'm increasingly getting the sense that experience >>>>> reading when it comes to understanding/cultivating mindfulness, but I nevertheless find myself doing a lot more reading than actual practice. I was hoping that by some miracle Karma and Chaos might be available in my library system but no such luck. I may just go ahead and buy it. Appreciate the response greatly and looking forward to continuing the journey.

Notepad, Yukon Style Yo

- Not sure how excited exactly I am about being here (ehhhh did I ever mention how I want to be in Europe ), but it does definitely feel comfortable

#YouCanLeaveTheYukonButTheYukonNeverLeavesYou

- I was flying over the absolutely amazing and mesmerizing greenish desolated Yukon Wild yesterday, when a fury of shivers happily crawled underneath my skin, reminding me how fracking beautiful it is here This said, I do wonder how long (a few decades?) before this open land also becomes heavily populated...

- Ehhhh, am really bummed out by the wheels I drive over here AKA a 1997 Dodge Caravan It is very practical, but beat down and following to pieces at this point (not to mention dirty af after spending a Yukon winter outdoors ). I might purchase a new van within the next month, but is it really worth it if I only spend a couple of weeks in Canada next year... TBD

- Part of me cant stand the dirty/crumbling to pieces van for obvious reasons, another facet is that I would want my wheels to be more reflective of my own-the-felt success ; I mean, that is pretty fracking vain (or perhaps just very human... am not sure...).

- It is good to be in a town that, while I only have a handful or so of very close friends, the number of people that I am friendly with/have known for decades/like, are exponential

Of Rake and Northern Goals

Well, the weekend has come to an end. As have my Spanish courses. At least until November, that is, when I set foot on the Old Continent and immerse myself in a Spanish speaking country once again yo But anyhow, Dawson...

Outside of the 3-4h of weekly poker studying (probably for the next 3 months), I do not think I really need to set many goals... I mean, from the way I was straddling every round, blind raising (sometimes) to 10$ in UTG+1 (after a straddle), it would surprise the living shyt out of me if I would make anything beyond 30$/live, but it is just that much more fun to splash around and call suited-1-gapper-connectors from the SB or not care about the results, essentially This said, I do want to either be running or playing tennis everyday (cardio yo ) and perhaps maintain 25h of weekly online volume... Yeah, that sounds just about right

They added a new season ending tourney of omaha - which is great -, but alas, it is limit and raked at fracking 14.3% (350$ + 50$) I mean, I will play it and all, but found myself raising my voice today when speaking with a manager/buddy when mentions of also raising the 5$ capped rake in the cash game was also mentioned Find me another game where the peeps tip 5$ on average on every hand (especially in a f**king lowstakes game), thus essentially making the rake 10$/hand End of rant
Spoiler:
and it is not as if it will affect my bottom line, but it nonetheless tilts me af and perhaps reflective of how management has come to take our generosity for granted

I assume you have read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

If not, I think you would really enjoy it.

Spewing

I wonder if this is what it feels like to be a rec player... Playing too many hands for the fun of it... Double straddling in a limit game to essentially committing yourself to a capped 4bet blind preflop ... Losing and not caring a rat's arse In all honesty, it feels pretty amazing to play at the casino and not care at all about the results and just enjoy being there and splashing around with decade old familiar faces even if, you know, we care WAY too much for a 2 card/4 card game that hints on a good touch of addictive degeneracy

Yeah man, a couple of decades ago, just a few months before coming up to Dawson for the first time - if I remember correctly... -, but had completely forgotten about that gem of a book until you mentioned it ; thx for bringing back that elite story to mind bro

I definitely can relate to that nomadic spiritual journey, fighting your inner demons and the growth that ensues When I read your post, I initially was tempted to revisit that book... but then I thought better of it, thinking perhaps it is one of these stories that was just perfect for my early 20s and I should just leave it at that, thus preserving my memories of the narrative idem. I use to love Henry Miller's novels and particularly Tropic of Cancer which was as epic as can f**king be when the action in the story suddenly comes to a halt and the narrator starts describing a what seems to be a benign crack in the asphalt... and then it goes on for 60 pages, takes you on an otherworldly metaphysical journey and, I kid you not, but both you and the narrator reach fracking GOD through this surrealistic digression Yet, I do not think the 41 year old me would enjoy as much as the 21 year old narcissistic old self once did Not saying this is the same case for Zen and the art of..., but certain books (like movies) are just better off with the initial golden impression, as oppose to revisiting them and thus altering our appreciation, me thinks. This said, thx again for making me revisit in thoughts that narrative though

Yeah man, my teachers always insist on the constant practice of meditation as oppose to some metaphysical questions that we might have (and would even at times cut our philosophical questions short).

Pariyatti (where karma and Chaos is sold) is a pretty cool online business (as oppose to, you know, Amazon and stuff ) who employs a bunch of spiritual peeps

Also, Zen and the Art of..., is a a fabulous work. Kudos to Chaos_ult on that book mention. I actually got to this book at a great point in my life.
