Calgary ended up going well. The community of players is much more fun than most cities. Games were very good during the series and decent outside of the series. I played mostly my A-game over 191.5 hours in the ~26days. Got in 10 gym sessions, and 6-7 yoga sessions. Pretty much maxed out on expectations and managed to enjoy myself too.

I'm in whistler now. Got tons of fun stuff going on over the next week. It's as much as a vacation as possible.. Skiing, Ice climbing, jiu jitsu, virtual reality, psychedelics... weeee

Sick volume, nice work!

Curious about your VR experience. I wonder if it is going to proliferate as quickly as smartphones.

VR is pretty cool. I played a few games on the vive. It's got 2 sensors, a headset, and it takes good PC hardware to run properly.

It's a pretty interesting feeling/experience. It's immersive and you get lost in the VR and forget about your surroundings in 'base' reality. It's fun and interacting with people over VR can be very entertaining.

I found the controls to be a little less intuitive than normal. Some games have different buttons for similar actions and it didn't come naturally to me as video games I've played in the past. There are some glitches and drawbacks. It's still clearly in the early stages and I think it has a ton of potential.

I think many(probably most in the western world) people would choose to live in a VR world if they could. I think there is a ton of potential with VR technology. I believe the biggest possible gains for society are through education. I assume most military organizations use this technology for training today. If they dont, they should and will probably start soon. Not only can it provide a better platform for learning than schools/universities, but it also has the ability to bring people together quickly from all over the globe.

I don't know if it will spread as quickly as smartphones. I don't have a strong case for slow or fast adoption. I think in the next 4-5 years the overwhelming majority of VR use will be gaming, porn, and military training. I think there is a huge(trillions$) market for sex/porn. That said, I think there is going to be a ton of development in this market and that we are only a few years until VR delivers sexual experiences that are feel very real and are close to "base reality" sex. I dont know how our culture will receive that technology. For instance, online dating is an awesome tool but there was a very bad stigma attached to it for years and its growth was far slower than it could have been if it was accepted by society.

ty. I'm quite proud of my ~2 month stunt of pokers. ~450 hours in <2months is pretty impressive.

---

I'm glad to be spending some time away from poker over the next few weeks. I'll be focusing on connecting with family, reading, and spiritual practices. I'll write some more details on what I plan to do in the next month.

I'm still a bit uncertain what I'll be doing in the new year. Australia for poker as my main focus seems like the best option. It's not my preferred choice, but I think its the best play for my future self.. Future me is going to need more monies and I don't have any good known sources of income that I can pursue in 3-4 years, but I have a source of income now that will only be good for a few years. It seems like a bit of a cop-out as my gifts are being semi-wasted and my purpose is being semi-ignored.

Another option, which is more "risky"... would be to go to Florida for a month or two and play poker, then go to Colombia and stay at a place called Mystic Banana for 3-5 weeks, then stay at my friends weed farm for a few weeks (in Colombia). I'd then probably go back to FL for poker, and then find a place to buy land in Colombia. This path is certainly more interesting, exciting, and would provide more growth for myself. The downside is I'll print half the EV.

Tough spot, will contemplate more.

Time spent in whistler was awesome, will write more about that in the coming days too.

I've got a lot of free time to think/write over the next week so I expect to be quite a bit more active in here and have some more cohesive plans for my future before 2017.

i think its always a safe bet to buy from own country, even if its expensive.
and if you have at least 30% of cash of down payment, u should totally invest in your own country,

but if you do have your own house/apartment,
then you might try commercial properties ?

buying land or properties in foreign country can be very tricky,
do do do think alot of times about it, theres alot of grey area in it...
im speaking of personally experience on purchasing foreign condo,

would love to hear more about ur ideas and why on purchasing foreign properties..

Yeah, I want to buy a property at home(Canada). I'm going to owe rent for ~2018-2038 in Canada. I have access to someone on the property.. so I figure investing in a home to build some equity is a good play.

I'm not too concerned about buying land in a foreign country. I have a friend who bought in a similar area so I can ask some questions. I'll need to be able to assess the land, but that shouldn't be too hard. Also, the cost will be in a the $5-15k range.. so its not a massive investment.

I have no idea about the condo market. To me the price of the investment seems to be based mostly on what other people are willing to pay for accommodation in that area. That said, buy at a place/time when people aren't willing to pay much, and sell as it becomes a more popular or developed place. It seems like it would only be a good play in certain places that tourism and special industries are growing quickly. Also, it's probably better value if that location use to have problems, or has been ignored in the recent past for some reason.. If I was to buy a condo I'd research Iquitos and Medellin.

---

I booked a flight to Australia. It's (by far) the most expensive one-way I've ever booked. *edit: staying in Melbourne 12th-30th, looking for people to split accommodation with.. PM me if interested* It's been a long time since I've spent summer in a first world country. I think 150-200hours poker/mo for (at least) the next 3-12 months is the best play for myself. A few bigs/hr over a large(500h-2000h) sample sh(c)ould provide some healthy padding for my investments/future business.

I plan on learning jiu jitsu(and some striking) while I'm in Australia. I'd like to challenge myself and learn a new skill set. I also have a fear of fighting and a draw to be outside of my comfort zone.. good combo. I'll read/watch videos and spend a few hours/wk training.

I also plan on spending more time dating. I've been missing out on that love/connection grind for the last few years. I think finding a partner that I can spend 1+ years with and would move to Colombia is the most attractive scenario to me. I'll have to refine what I'm looking for a bit further and then start looking in the right places. Also will be reading books/watching videos in this domain.

So you should be there for the Australian Open, right? Please tell me you're going to attend.

Also, speaking of Australia, I hear boomerangs are making a comeback.

Second this.
It's a great event that shouldn't be missed.
Maybe Aussie millions at same time too to juice up the cash games

Wasn't planning on going to the Australian open, but I shall go and check it out... at least one match. I'm staying next to the venue, so that will make it easier.

Yeah, I expect cash games will be good.. They have a $5k PLO event too, so I'll be looking forward to that.

---

I've spent lifetime max $/night on accommodation for Aussie millions. 1 Block from the casino, I'm paying an extra $20-30/night for such a luxury.. I think its worth it.

I've been spending a bunch of time with family over the holidays. I've done a few hikes with my sister, and spent several hours watching TV/chilling at home. I'm happy to be here at this moment. I suspect I would get very bored after a couple weeks, so I'm also happy to be leaving shortly.

I've finally got around to doing some reading. I'm reading three books simultaneously. I've been reading "On writing well" which is about writing non-fiction. fwiw It's exposed many leaks in my writing game.. I've managed to learn the basics of writing by spewing my thoughts on this blog for several years, but I'm nowhere near pro. I'm reading a book called "The hidden life of trees" which happens to be proving(with western science) some lessons I learned via experience in the jungle. Trees communicate / nature has a sort of intelligence of its own which we are barely starting to understand. The third book I'm reading is written by the guy who pioneered sensory deprivation tanks. He spent thousands of hours in the tank and ran a bunch of experiments/explorations on consciousness.

I've also been watching some RIO and dabbling in some online pokers. I've played a few hours on a Chinese site. Min buy is 10-20BB which is very absurd/profitable. I plan on venturing into the ignition games over the holidays. In the past, I've found online poker games tend to be very good around christmas.

I'm going to take this back. I just realized the rake structure/rakeback structure at this site. Its ~5% uncapped for micro/short buys. You'd need some poor regs and big whales to make it +EV enough to take site related risks.

I still check the games when I wake up and like to put in a few hands if games look particularly soft. I'd guess my hourly is in the $20-40/hr range playing these games. It's barely worth it as far as $/hr... but its good to get in some hands to keep sharp.

I went to a new yoga studio in west Ottawa and its unfortunately poor. Membership prices are higher than normal, fewer challenging classes, and im well below the average age. I've gone to 2 classes and done one solo class. I've been very lucky to practice yoga in 'yoga cities'. Whistler, Vegas, LA, Calgary(strangely?) and Vancouver are top tier cities to learn/practice yoga. I believe I'm a bit under my yoga session target that I set 6 weeks ago.

I have been hitting the gym frequently.. I've been 4 times in Ottawa, and 10 in Calgary over 6 weeks. I'll go one more time and hit the goal I set 6 weeks ago. I'm taking a different approach than before. I was following starting strength textbook style the last time I was going to the gym. This time I'm doing more sets, lower average weight, and occasionally lifting until failure on my last set. Between all my sets I toss my shoes off, get on a mat and hold a stretch for 2-3 minutes. I'm not sure if this has negative impacts on strength gains (I've heard mixed opinions on this). I am making large flexibility gains. GL trying to injure me world.

---

I want to write a bit more about some stuff I've been reading about / contemplating over the last few months. It's about the nature of the mind/reality. I certainly like exploring these topics, y'all are welcome to join me. I know a bunch of you are interested in this stuff. I'd like to hear some perspectives on these topics, so feel free to share thoughts.

First, I'd like to introduce two perspectives at looking the nature of reality / the human experience.

1. Ones experience is contained within the mind. It is brain centered. All stimulus/dreams/visions are projections of the mind produced exclusively from ones brain/body.

2. One is capable of receiving information from sources outside the "brain" which are separate from brain/body's "central processing".

Right, so an observation; If 2. is true it can only be true if these sources of information are currently undetectable by western science. Otherwise, it would be provable(in an objective manner) and 1. could be proven false.

Another observation; I think that most people believe 1. to be true. I think society is build on this perspective. Law is built around it, western science assumes it. People who express strong beliefs in 2. have been outcasted by society and in extreme cases put in mental asylums or burned alive.

The religious tradition and many spiritual practices are built around the assumption that 2. is true. The whole concept of prayer would not be possible if 2. wasn't true. That said, most people seem to pray (express belief that 2. is true), but make decisions and operate through life as if 1. is also true.

Even though there is no way to objectively prove 2. is true, lets assume its true for the next few paragraphs. I'd like to express some theories I have based on my ventures/research if 2. is true.

First.. I think access to these "external sources" are strongly influenced by ones meta-beliefs. If one believes 2. to be entirely false, its ~impossible for them to process info from external sources. Even in a universe where 2. were true and they were to tune-in somehow, (ex: a near-death experience), they wouldn't perceive information received as being external of brain/body.

I also believe that there is a key to communication with these external sources. I've been thinking of these communication lines as "channels". I think DMT plays a large role in tuning to the channels. I have a theory that practices like dreaming, meditation, float tanks, ayahuasca ceremonies are ways to generate a state of consciousness where one can access these channels. I also believe the pineal gland(where ones "third eye" is located) is an essential part of this DMT-secretion, and its one of the main constants being altered through many spiritual practices.

I also believe ones lifestyle choices can influence DMT production. Again, I dont know of any research that's been done in this area but my grunch is that meat/alcohol/caffeine/sugar/watching TV negatively influence DMT-production. I think routine spiritual practices(daily meditation, microdosing mushrooms, lucid dreaming, yoga etc..) positively influence DMT-production. I also suspect there are certain supplements/foods that increase dmt secretion in humans.

Anyways, clearly this is speculation. It's based on a combination of my experiences and second-hand research I've done. When I search scholarly articles/studies I find barely anything relevant. I think the perspective that DMT-production/secretion is a potential key to access entities in undetectable dimensions is somewhere between fringe theory and insane.. so I suppose thats why there hasn't been any formal research. Also, its illegal in most countries that could fund such research.

I'm going to move away from writing about these subjects extensively over the next few months. My focus is moving towards poker/mma/girls and that doesn't leave much room for exploring consciousness. DMT: The spiritual molecule is an awesome documentary which touches on many of the things I wrote about above. Other people to that write/talk about DMT; Terrance McKenna, Aubrey Marcus, and Joe Rogan.

It's the start of a new year. My instinct is to start thinking about what I should do in 2017... because planning rocks. That said, I think its important to take time to review the past before planning for the future. It's a good practice to learn and hold accountability.

Around 2006 I became interested in self-development. It was mostly my father that got me interested about personal growth/improvement, and I'm glad he did. I think it was one of the best things that happened to me. The last 10 years of my life have been super amazing, and there seems to be, on average, an increase in awesomeness each year.

2016 has been a good year in both absolute and relative terms. I didn't go to many new places, but I spent time in places I enjoy with people I like. I started off the year in Whistler. After a few months I flew into Argentina and eventually made my way into Peru. After a good chunk of time in Peru, I flew back to Vancouver/Whistler. Then I spent a bit of time in Macau, then Calgary, and now Ottawa.

Last new years I set intentions for 2016. I like this concept in theory because it sets a general direction/tone and adds a touch motivation. However, had I not written anything I believe I would have had a very similar experience. I think there is a bit of EV in writing things down as it tends to program ones mind. It's probably the best strategy for most people most of the time.

Quote:

The way I'm approaching 2016 is inspired by the writings of James Altucher in his book "Choose yourself". I discovered this book at the right time and it had a strong impact on my mindset.

I think that setting goals is probably the most efficient way to productivity.. but I'm going to experiment a bit this year. My main reason for doing this is a lack of precise direction. It's difficult to set measurable goals if you barely have a roadmap constructed.

Physical health:
Gym: I'm going every other day for Jan-Mar. I've been doing Rippetoes "Starting Strength" program.
Yoga: I practice a couple times a week and would like to go through a couple months where I practice daily.

My physical health was highly volatile this year. I was the strongest I've ever been around April. I got most of strength back and have been getting to the gym over the last 2 months. My yoga practice has improved quite a bit and I practiced regularly for 3-4 months.

I also faced some of the worst sickness of my life this year. I got very sick for a few days in the jungle. I think most people would have checked into a hospital in my condition. I also contracted an annoying skin infection for several weeks.

Squat/bench/shoulder press/deadlift for 5x3/5x3/5x3/1x5 is ~225/130/100/250, which is ~80% of April maxes. I don't have a way to measure "core" strength, but that's been another focus.

Mental Health:
Real estate: I'm going to either buy or build a home this year. Regardless of which project I tackle, there will be lots of learning.
Poker: Play enough to be effective in my coaching business. 3-10hours/wk of coaching. 4-6 MTT series.
Reading: Learn to speed read.

Yeah, 'mental health' was pretty stagnant this year. I didn't start a real estate project. I didn't really take on any new projects at all. Barely developed my existing skill sets and didn't learn any new skill sets. I improved in spanish and thats about it. Meh.

I played towards the higher end of my hourly goals in Poker. I played in 4 mtt series. I improved my game marginally. I coached far less than I had hoped. I think its a combo of poor marketing (I dont really market, nor do I have a large presence in the PLO world) and low demand.

I feel more comfortable/confident with myself going into 2017. I feel grounded. On a ~daily basis if I notice my thoughts flying off into anxiety-land(or similar lands) I can take a few breaths and clear those thoughts. This feels like the biggest mental game win of 2016.

Emotional health:
Dating: Moving from short-term to medium-term relationships. (3mo-1yr)
Relationships: The people in my life. Being more aware of people in my life. Doing a better job at maintaining relationships.

This area of my life had been on autopilot for the vast majority of my life. This was a pretty big mistake and I consider myself novice in this aspect of life. This year went better than I expected, and I'm quite happy with it. The quality of relationships with most existing friends improved and I made new friends. Family relationships have on average grown stronger, despite distance.

Dating was different for me in 2016. I had more experiences/interactions with attractive women than ever before, and also had the fewest partners/least sex I've had in years. It's not what I would have expected, but what I wanted.

Spirituality:
Water fast: Spending a few days in wilderness only drinking water.
Psychedelics: Experiment with and write about psychedelic experiences
Meditation: Daily.

I didn't quite do a water fast, but I did some hard-core fasting. Actually, I went a little bit too extreme on the fasting front. I dropped ~25 pounds in a few weeks and flushed my entire system(good and bad stuff). I would do it differently next time. I gave up some physical health to get more out of my spiritual adventures. I think it wasn't worth it.

Psychedelics held my attention for most of the year. I had many experiences and shared some on here.

Meditation wasn't daily, but fairly consistent. I'd say I got in >5minutes around 1/4 days when I wasn't in the jungle (9months), and >30minutes/day while in the jungle. I've moved further and further away from being my thoughts and identifying with my thoughts and more towards being an observer of my thoughts. I find calming/clearing my mind to be much easier than a year ago. I think part of this has to do with meditation, part of it has to do with changes in my brain/body as a result of ayahuasca, and part of it has to do with beliefs I've developed about the nature of the self.

In retrospect, my 2016 intentions seemed quite ambitious. I loosely followed them and had a experience close to what I wanted for myself. I ventured pretty far off down the spiritual path and realized gains I didn't know existed. The thing that bothered me the most about this year is it seemed like I had an incredible amount of "down time" relative to previous years, and I wasted large portions of this time.

2016 was the worst of my poker career in hours played, hourly, and $s earned. I still made monies, but my hourly was pathetic. I managed to earn more per hour than 99% of the world, but less than the top .5%. That may seem good, but its a big fail in my books. That said, I'm obviously super fortunate despite having a poor year. I'll be donating 5% of my total income from 2016 to charity. I haven't quite decided the charities yet. I will be using givewell to make sure I get max value on my donations. I'd prefer to donate to education-based charities.

This year I'm going to approach things differently, again. I want to figure out what things I spend the most time on that have the lowest positive impact on my life, then do less of that. I want to find the things that bring the most positive emotions and do more of that. I want to identify the source of most of my negative emotions and do less of that. I've made this sound quite simple, but it isn't. I think this wouldn't have been the most effective new years planning for Tyler of 2013. This strategy requires a high amount of self-awareness to be effective.

So, out of the activities I engage in for ~>10hours/wk, whats the least valuable? First, I'll list them; Poker, reading/writing/listening about self-development, fitness related activities, leisure time with friends/family.

Out of the above activities, I think self-development is the area I should be spending less energy on. I'm a bit obsessed with self-development and planning. I read about it, write about it, and live it. I've programmed myself to be Mr. personal growth. I suspect I probably overdo it, and probably to a fault. I think that time would be better spent on poker and time(quality time!) with family/friends.

Okay, so next question.. What have been the main sources of negative emotions over the last couple years? I think its any form of self-hate. Beating myself up when I make a mistake, miss my goals, or miss expectations. Self-hate sucks. ~4+ years ago I beat myself up all the time. I had a horrible relationship towards myself, and I wasn't aware of it. These days I'm aware, and I'm getting along quite a bit better with myself. Much better than most. So, less-self hate(aka more self-love).

Third question; What have been the main sources of positive emotions over the last couple years? Well, there are different ways of looking at this. I'm thinking of this more in experience-based terms. So yeah, experiences that have generated, on average, the most positive emotions are; Physical activities outdoors, intimate experiences, and psychedelics.

This year I'd like to see myself develop presence and more consistently act from a place of love(rather than fear). To do this; More self-love, more love towards others, less negative self-talk, less studying self-development. I'd like to get in at least two big trips(2-8weeks) which include lots of outdoor activities(hiking/surfing/biking etc) and psychedelics(and/or a spiritual practice).

Hey folks. I've experienced boredom for the first time in awhile over the last week. Excited to be flying to Melbourne tomorrow for Aussie millions/Aussie open.

I'll be doing a 30-hour fast next week. I've been eating like **** the last few weeks. My body needs a good flush. Also, I suspect I'll lose a couple of the holiday pounds I put on. I'll also be using this fast as a way to achieve ketosis. I'm loosely following Tim Ferriss' fasting guidelines.

I've decided I'm going to attempt my first fast while in transit to Melbourne. It seems like a decent time to fast. I don't need energy/clarity during the trip.. and airplane food sucks. I suppose my immune system will be more vulnerable... I'll make sure to load up on vitamin C beforehand.

This is my plan; I'm going to eat breakfast around 9:30am. I've got flights/layovers for ~27 hours and expect to be without food for ~30 hours(~2.5 hours before first flight, ~.5 hour after I land). I will be consuming some calories, mostly fat, and some sodium. I'll be bringing a few tablespoons of coconut oil and some salt. I'll use the coconut oil in coffee and the salt in water.

My inspiration for this came mostly from Tim Ferriss' podcast with Dom D'Agostino in 2015. 20:00 onwards addresses fasting/ketogenic diet.

In Melbourne.

The trip went smoothly. I've got less than 6 hours sleep in the last 70ish hours, but that's okay. I whaled it off and showed up 2 hours early for a late night flight out of Ottawa. I expect I get from the airport door to the departure gate in <15 minutes half the time.. and would give 5:1 on >30min, 50:1 on >1hour. Don't waste your time in airports.

The fast went well. I had a big dinner around 5pm(Jan9), and a small breakfast the morning of the 9th. During the flights I would get all the food I could and give it away to people. It was fun, some people seemed quite happy. I drank 5-6 cups of coffee+coconut oil, lots of water(2-3L, sometimes with a pinch of garlic salt), and a few Vitamin C tablets. It lasted 33hours. Broke the fast with a handful of macadamia nuts and a monster stir-fry of chicken/onion/zucchini/tomato/avocado/eggplant dip cooked in butter/olive oil and seasoned with basil/garlic salt/pepper. It was a below average cooking effort that tasted far above average.

The fast was far easier than I expected. The concerns I had of feeling hungry were not realized. I would only feel hungry if I could smell and see people eating around me, or I started picturing food in my minds eye. Both these things are relatively easy to avoid for anyone with some degree mindfulness. So yeah, with <33hour fasts, all the hunger stuff is purely mental. I imagine it gets tougher physically/mentally once you get into the 3-7 day range. I'd like to do a 72-hour fast next time.

My estimation is that I'm ~1week away from ketosis. For those unfamiliar with this.. I'm essentially switching to a 75/20/5 fat/protein/net carb(total carbs-fiber) diet. The theory is that my body will start using fat for energy instead of glucose. There is a way to measure this, but I'm too lazy/frugal to buy equipment, so I'll just be carb counting instead. I'm curious to see how this goes.

Upon counting carbs for today... it would appear I failed on day one. I'll hit around 25-30g of carbs today and a ~55/35/10 distribution. I underestimated the carbs in eggplant dip. Tomorrow I'm bringing it down to 20g or less.

I managed to read Tim Ferriss' new book "Tools of Titans" in 2 days. The book has more volume than my laptop. It's a big item for a minimalist traveler. That said, I expect to continue to travel around with it-- its that good.

I thought the skytrain in Vancouver was a rip off. I think its something like $7 to get downtown in 45 minutes. It turns out the airport train in Melbourne is around an hour and $18. Yikes, bad first impression.

edit:
For poker stuff, I'll probably be playing the main($10KAUD), $5k PLO, and a few $1ks. I've got around 35% more that I'm looking to sell for the main so hit me up if interested.

Glad to hear you made it all the way to Melbourne seemingly without issue.

Curious if you correlate lack of sleep with being hungry? General struggles of airport/plane sleep?

I wonder because recently I've been waking up early due to hunger (pit in stomach true hunger)and not falling back asleep until eating.

Hope there's some fun plo games at the series for you !

Nice timing plan for the fasting, I'm curious to here how your ketosis experiments work out.

Thanks for the reminder to pick up tools of titans.

I'm only 1/3rd of the way through Tools of Titans. It's a huge book and it's must better than I anticipated. Two questions:

Have you been doing cold water shower finishes again? What was your experience when in Whistler (I cant remember).

Have you tried using mct oil? Every podcaster seems to be big on it, but I am feeling it might be a dud like alpha brain was for us.

Hmm, I don't think I correlated feeling tired with hungry. Not confident on that though, hard to know. General struggles to sleep were had. I find sleeping in the plane difficult, I'd say I get 1-2 hours of sleep per 5 hours of attempting to sleep. I use my time reading/listening to podcasts or music instead.

I suspect the waking up early due to hunger could be attributed somewhat to just not eating enough in general.

Thanks, yeah timing was good. I would recommend a travel fast to people with minimal fasting experience. It's a good time as it doesn't take away focus/concentration from other activities. I would recommend taking vitamin C and no hands to face because I suspect there are higher chances of contracting something while fasting.

Tools of titan = gold. It's funny, he doesnt do any traditional marketing but I suspect this book is going to have absolutely massive sales to quality.

Yeah, I have been doing the cold water finishes these days. I certainly go through phases where I forget or don't do it for whatever reasons. Whistler is one of the places I struggle with cold showers(mostly because the room I sleep in is generally cold). I struggled in Peru because often the coldest temperature wasn't that cold.

I've only tried MCT oil once(bulletproof coffee). Sample is so low that my experience isn't that relevant.. That said, energy levels were more stable and seemed to be elevated for a longer period of time. It was better than expected. I have spent a few days using coffee+coconut oil and had a similar experience.

Also, I think you are better of trying supplements with either neutral or with (slightly) positive expectations. Placebo effects are real and often underestimated-- don't use them "against" yourself. The ability to take a $1 pill that makes you feel good is great value, regardless of what % of the effects are due to placebo or not. Personally, I like neutrality(and I suspect you would too), but I think having positive expectations for a supplement/activity is the most +EV for most people most of the time.

Good call, probably better to think about it positively and reap any possible placebo benefits. I got a bottle of MCT oil so will try and report back.

Nice. I know a few people who use it regularly. I don't particularly like Dave Asprey(he was the first to popularize this I believe..?), which is why I shied away. However, there is no reason why he couldn't have brought an effective product to the market. I'm curious to see how it goes for you. Do mention if you were trying any new products or habits in the same time frame as using the MCT oil.

For me, its hard to gauge how effective particular habits/products are on my subjective experience. To be accurate, its best if you have all variables of your life constant except for the one being tested. I have such a wacky baseline. If I'm in Ottawa living a relaxed lifestyle in December and then move to Melbourne and adopt 2-3 new habits and 1-2 new products/supplements, its very hard to know what effects are attributed to what factors. My surroundings are constantly evolving and I'm often testing multiple products/habits at once.

Also, I think there are some products/habits that have synergies that adds another element. For instance, MCT oil/butter coffee combined with cold exposure. Cold showers impact metabolism and blood cells. Perhaps the impacts of metabolism amplify some effects of the MCT oil/butter coffee. Perhaps MCT oil/butter coffee becomes more effective for people on a ketogenic diet...

I was going to play an MTT today, but I think its not the best EV play. ~50% of the time I'll have a session that's >6hours, and may play my B or C-game. X hours of cash based on game quality/fatigue seems way better.

Some of the standards here in Melbourne are strange. A dealer told me that if a player a facing a bet and throws in a single $5 chip it is not a call. I thought the dealer was joking at first, but no, he was serious. This could be very easily be used to angle to any foreigners, obviously..

Also, rake is pretty absurd at the 5/5 plo level. $15 max, plus a $10 sitting fee. Operation 'collect monies' has increased in difficulty.

I have only been doing the cold finish and mct oil for a few days, so it's hard to tell. I'm also trying to run every other day w/ just shorts and a t-shirt in 0 degree weather. I don't think the cold showers are any easier after a cold run, but I do find that doing deep breathing and making grunting/shouting sounds while having the cold finish makes it a more bearable and fun exercise... though I don't know what my neighbours think.

Hello again! I haven't replied in a long time but I've still been lurking and catching up every week in my email. Good to see Tools of Titans is well reviewed. I got it for Christmas but I have 2 more books in my queue before I get to it.

As far as the measuring device (for ketosis) I believe the company might give out free testing machines? I tried very weakly to find this option but you might have more luck. The really expensive part though are the test strips, but there are ways to get those cheaply as well if you search around.

Good luck for the rest of your time is Australia!

I find deep breaths are the best way to counter the "take your breath away" moments early on.

Sounds like you've got quite the new years resolution cocktail going on..

Yeah I don't think getting the glucose monitor makes sense at this point in time. It's going to take time to figure it out, and time to get it in the mail, and cost $$. It would have been useful over the last week, but I think its less useful after the first ~2weeks of this diet.

---

I will say it hasn't been a smooth adjustment period. I have had a general sense of "mental fog" over the last 5 days. In general just forgetting things and being clumsy. For the first couple days I thought it was jet-lag related.. but now I think its more likely to be diet-related.

Also, eating is different. This diet requires lots of eating. I am pretty much constantly hungry. I'm going to have to start bringing a meal to the poker table because its not possible to play >6hours without hunger.

---

Finding a gym for short-term use is difficult in Melbourne. Most gyms offer 3mo+ programs with signup fees. There are no options that have a sauna and shortterm plans within 10km of the casino.

There is a pool in my building and I'll blast out 3 sets of laps until exhaustion every few days as my "strength" substitute for the gym. I've been doing some body-exercises and yoga for exercise. That and a bunch of walking.

Per usual, fitness is difficult to maintain living the nomadic lifestyle.

---

I played 1 good PLO cash game over the last few days. I've had 4 tables break while I've been playing (over ~20 hours of early evenings). This is because there are a ton of regs(seemingly good) here. The plo cash games, so far, are poor. That said, rake at 5/10/20+ is $30/hr-- so that's good news.
