A 2017 reflection and 2018 goals.
Sup bros, since 2018 is around the corner iv been doing a lot of thinking these past day reflecting back on my year of poker, and of course setting goals for 2018. Iv learned a lot through experimenting this year and iv had a bit of success and a lot failures along the way. Well, I was at a breaking point 3-4 months ago before starting this PGC with a small roll left after cashing out too much to support myself and I didnt study at all. I was stuck grinding
25-100nl on small networks chasing rakeback and bonuses to support myself. I continued to fail and go round in circles for a while. But it wasnt the productive type of failure where you experiment - fail and try something new again. It was that same dumb **** over and over that wasnt doing anything good for me mentally or my game technically. Until one day, I think it was about a week before I made this thread, I gave it all up. I was at my worst with frustration. All of what I thought I knew about the game, my perspectives, everything I was either going to quit or do something radically different and quitting wasnt an option for me. Im a persistent fuker.
I took a week off researching what direction I was going to take. I promised myself I would never mass table for rakeback ever again and that I would study every single day. I found this video on youtube with a quote which really stuck and I still listen to everyday. "To get something you never had, you gotta do something you never did". I decided to start playing on PS and instantly mailed support to table restrict me to 5 tables. 4 + 1 for when a table breaks or I see a good rec and switch them. I found some content which really got me going in a certain direction and applied myself to quite an extreme level, something which I hadnt done before. I made this thread for accountability purposes and to a degree it also helps me stay focused.
Since I made this thread I have radically overhauled my game, started with $400 at 25nl beat it for 18bb, moved up to 50nl beat it for 8bb and im now 10bb at 100nl so far. My plan is to keep pushing forward intelligently and with extreme discpline with regards to study. I am excited for what 2018 is going to bring. I feel confident and very competitive and will keep moving forward with my technical game. I have also thought for a while about applying for CFP or a coach. Even though im happy with what im doing alone, I would really like to build a network and accelerate my learning. Quite a few of the blogs I read of the guys who play higher with success seem to have either got coaching or completed a CFP. So I decided to send in an application for a CFP and if I do get accepted my goals will slightly change, but not drastically.
2018 Poker Goals:
-2 hours of study per day and 4.5 hours of poker per day - this is the right balance for me. I have kept a diary and more play combined with study burns me out and forces me to rest more days.
-5/10 reg by December.
-1 full day off poker per week and one half day, basically 1.5 days off per week. Probably Monday off and Thursday a half day.
-Aggressively shot take and learn to embrace the variance that comes with playing higher.
-Jan/Feb upgrade laptop so I can buy PIO and some other bits and pieces I want.
-Stay humble, accept failures along the way and never stop experimenting with strategy development.
Since thread started:
Gl to everyone closing out this year and a big 2018!
