Hello everyone! A little about me.. my name is Ryan, I am 24 years old and living in the UK. I didn't even know what poker was until a couple days after I turned 18 when my friend showed me the Zynga Poker app and I just fell in love with the game straightaway. Spend a lot of time reading poker books and watching poker vids/old episodes of PAD/WSOP/EPT etc to teach myself how to play, I basically spent the whole summer of 2012 doing nothing but that

After a while I started getting the itch of actually playing for real money instead of Zynga play money so I found Pokerstars, made an account and deposited all the money I had back then which was just £100 or so. I think Zoom Poker was pretty new back in 2012/early 2013 so I was attracted to that and always have been ever since.

After 4 years of playing, I built my bankroll up so I was rolled for 25NL (I could have been rolled for 50NL probably if I didn't have to keep withdrawing or spend it on beer/sports betting etc lol ) and I had won a LOT of trophies (and money I suppose) from the social games I played in a pub league around my local area. Almost won a trip to vegas twice as well through that, I was unlucky!

Anyway now for the sad part the past 2 years (discounting last summer when I came back for a couple weeks thanks to HESP!!! doing so well in the main event but I wasn't ready in the end) I have been struggling with personal problems which stopped me from leaving the house and feeling like **** basically. So I haven't played any form of live poker in quite a while, and I wasn't feeling up to playing online either but I still loved the game and I watched it whenever I could. I won't go into my personal issues too much, but thankfully after receiving the right help i've been back to my normal self for the past couple months and i'm ready to go again

Obviously after a couple years away i'm definitely a bit rusty. I'm not going to just jump back into 25NL where I was at last time and start playing live again until I feel confident enough. (I moved so now there are casinos nearby) so i'm starting from scratch at 5NL. I know there is 2NL as well but I didn't bother with that back when I was 18, so I won't bother with it now. I don't have the bankroll anymore anyway to start at 25NL anyway even if I wanted to so working my way up is the best option.

I started a few weeks ago just taking it easy, maybe 2-3 hours of playing per day until I get back into the groove but for the past week i've ramped it up a bit now i've lost most of my rustiness. ATM at 5NL i've played 38k hands, with a profit of £119.65 (8.31bb/100) which i'm pretty happy with

I'm in absolutely no rush whatsoever to move up the stakes, don't want to overdo it and move up too soon but I feel maybe it's nearly time to up to 10NL after 50k hands perhaps, what do you think? (If i'm still winning at a decent rate)

My long term goals are to finally reach 50NL and beyond, something I didn't manage to do last time and to perhaps find someone willing to stake/coach me to play in some of the bigger buy in tournaments at my local casinos. I'm a cash game player online and a tournament player live, always been that way. I do occasionally play an online tournament and if I do I will be sure to post it.

Let's do this!!

[I will post my current PT4 graph once I figure out how to do it, completely forgot how to lol and I will post a few hands to get started later ]

So today I thought I played rather well for the most part - started off the night spewing with this hand though:

PokerStars - $0.05 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: $5.00 (VPIP: 34.48, PFR: 20.69, 3Bet Preflop: 10.00, Hands: 29)
SB: $1.91 (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
BB: $5.00 (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
UTG: $6.68 (VPIP: 44.44, PFR: 33.33, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 9)
Hero (MP): $5.52
CO: $5.37 (VPIP: 23.08, PFR: 23.08, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 40)

SB posts SB $0.02, BB posts BB $0.05

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.07) Hero has T Q

fold, Hero raises to $0.15, CO raises to $0.40, fold, fold, fold, Hero calls $0.25

Flop: ($0.87, 2 players) 9 8 K
Hero checks, CO bets $0.46, Hero raises to $1.46, CO calls $1.00

Turn: ($3.79, 2 players) 6
Hero bets $3.60, CO calls $3.51 and is all-in

River: ($10.81, 2 players) 6

Hero shows T Q (One Pair, Sixes)
(Pre 19%, Flop 23%, Turn 18%)
CO shows A A (Two Pair, Aces and Sixes)
(Pre 81%, Flop 77%, Turn 82%)
CO wins $10.36

Probably should've folded pre OOP even though it was a small 3bet, decided to raise flop with gutshot and backdoor FD and jam the turn after picking up the double gutter - based on V's 3bet% and stats this is spew imo.

But after that, I got my head on right and started playing well. I've been tightening up my UTG opening range, folding hands like 89s and below, small pairs etc and also been improving my SB and BB play, defending less in the BB with marginal hands and raising a lot more SB v BB rather than limping in which i did too often.

Most of the session was just grinding away, staying patient, picking the right spots and winning/losing small pots here and there. A couple nice pots though were with TT and with AA:

Easy money when V is willing to get it all in pre with 7s lol

A hand I wasn't sure about was this one - (I will prob post this in the forum as well)

PokerStars - $0.05 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.07) Hero has 6 6

fold, MP raises to $0.15, fold, Hero raises to $0.50, fold, fold, MP calls $0.35

Flop: ($1.07, 2 players) 8 T 8

Turn: ($1.87, 2 players) J
MP checks, Hero checks

River: ($1.87, 2 players) 9
MP checks, Hero bets $2.50, fold

Hero wins $1.79

Thought it was a good spot on the river to overbet bluff here, V showed a lot of weakness in the hand but not sure if my line makes complete sense after checking the turn? I would check turn with a FH sometimes and with KQ/AQ or 7x but with those I more than likely wouldn't be overbetting on a paired board.

Overall i'm -£5.30 for the day over 1k hands.

Current bankroll: £253.45 (started off with £100 but a little of the winnings is from Sports Betting as I use BetStars for that lol)

I'm nearing 40k hands now - still thinking of moving up to 10NL once I reach 50 and if i'm still winning at a decent rate - 7.84bb/100 right now

Ah well that's poker for you eh bloody variance that was pretty much the only interesting hand of note in the 800 or so hands I played today lol.

Not sure if anyone is actually reading this or interested at all but i'll keep posting every night or 2, hopefully reach 50k hands by end of the week but like i've said before i'm in no rush

PM me your guesses? will do! I doubt I will reach 50NL first since i'm in no rush whatsoever but never know lol.

Plan for today is to play another 1k hands or so, what I like to do is play 'mini' sessions of between 200-250 hands (30 mins) and then take a break, watch some tv/exercise/do some reviewing/studying etc etc and then repeat for the whole night, this schedule has always seemed to work for me so if it ain't broke don't fix it eh lol

Will post how I got on later tonight!

Cheers! Good luck to you, will subscribe to your thread if you're still posting in it?

Really really happy with the way I played today, played 5 'mini' sessions of 200 hands each and if it wasn't for some really bad luck I would've won a lot more. But that's variance for you, i'm the type of guy that remembers the bad beats but I also remember the bad beats I put on other people

First 50 hands of the first mini session I got dealt AA 3 times and KK twice, won the blinds with the first few until this happened simultaneously on both tables:

Blind on blind, went with the 3bet as V has been folding to a few 3bets but after getting 4bet decide to take a flop IP with a nice hand, should maybe have just let it go. Can't fold to just the one bet on the turn with TP if i'm calling pre but I got a lucky river and a full double up

Feel I played this well until the river. Would sometimes 3bet this pre but against a tight UTG opening range decide to just flat. When V leads out full pot on the river was one of these situations where my spidey senses went off and I kind of knew I was beat, KK got there, slowplayed A10 or AK as well but just couldn't find the fold, a small part of me thinking he could do this with AJ/AQ as well made me call which I feel was a mistake. Oh well!

Would have been nice to end on a high note but last few minutes of the day this happened:

Hands look wp to me, the final AA I might sigh fold vs reg sometimes esp since we have As, think they show up with sets majority of the time and when they don't it's a unlikely combo draw we're flipping against. We block hands like A2/A4s so sets are more weighted. Vs 26/22 he might do this with naked flush draws so likely very fine to stack off just something to keep in mind maybe vs tighter majority you'll find in 5nl zoom pool

Yeah I took my time before shoving there, I still had the BB to worry about but thought he'd have enough flush draws even with the As to go for it, guess I was right this time but it was close. 26/22 only over 71 hands though but that weighed into my decision as well.

Thanks! I keep saying to myself I don't need to update this every single day but can't help it, it's pretty enjoyable lol.

I may start a new thread today, I've just been spending a few weeks making sure I'm motivated to play before I start a new blog and it dies after the first post!

And the JT hand looks good for thin value on the river as there's not a lot he can realistically have that beats you (one combo of JJ/TT maybe) but could talk himself into calling with AA/KK/QQ so wp.

River with the AQ hand I think you can fold at these stakes, whenever someone leads for pot its basically the nuts but I'd also find it difficult to find the fold button.

GL mate, will keep a look out for any new threads

Yeah I wasn't too worried about JJ/TT in that hand, it was pre-flop I felt I made a mistake calling the 4bet but I was IP and it was BvB with a nice looking hand I guess.

My plan for tonight is basically the same as yesterday, 4 or 5 'mini' sessions while having breaks *****ween to keep me fresh might finish early tonight as there is a film i'd like to watch but i'll see - Poker is much better than watching films

Played 1,100 or so hands today, 5 mini sessions of 200-250 hands each.

Pretty much everything interesting happened in the first mini session -

Should've probably folded the turn, but I picked up the open ender and I was a little suspicious due to the time he took to make his turn bet but I ended up being wrong and got a lucky river

And this hand I was a little confused by, had a note on V saying he donk bets with TP or better:

Should've raised the turn perhaps, get value from worse 2 pairs and charge draws? Was worried about the BTN as well though.

That was pretty much it tbh, most of the profit I made today was from making a lot of good value bets and winning small/medium sized pots.

I'll do a breakdown of all the mini sessions profits/loss:
  • Mini Session 1 - +£7.12 (250 hands)
    Mini Session 2 - +86p (200 hands)
    Mini Session 3 - +14p (203 hands)
    Mini Session 4 - -£1.84 (250 hands)
    Mini Session 5 - +65p (222 hands)
    Total Profit - +6.93 (1,125 hands)

As you can see (apart from the fact I like being as orderly as possible and using lists like that etc, a little bit of OCD there lol ) after the first 250 hands it was pretty much break even, nothing interesting of note happened . Still happy with the way I played overall though, I would like to get my VPIP/PFR slightly closer together but other than that pretty content

Time to relax until tomorrow!

Should be a bit more volume tomorrow hopefully but if not, if it takes me another week to reach 50k hands so be it, i'm still in no rush. 5NL is definitely not as easy as it was back in 2013 but it's still pretty comfortable imo, so will be moving up once I reach 50k hands and still got a steady win rate (7.43bb/100 right now)

On a personal note, will be getting glasses next week which I need to start wearing all the time, my eyesight has deteriorated a bit over the past couple months or so. (Should've always worn glasses but I kept breaking them playing footy as a kid so I stopped )

Also looking forward to the football season starting again!! The world cup was absolutely AMAZING. Bring it on! I'm in the 2+2 Fantasy Football League and Talksport Prediction League and also going to have a shot at that PEEHS thing, I suggest everyone with an interest in football to have a look, it's pretty cheap and looks fun

I know I could have just done that leaktracker thing but I was bored so typed them all out (can you tell? )

Definitely still got some things to work on, would like to get my VPIP/PFR closer together and my big blind defence a little tighter (improved this greatly since I started this thread) but is there anything else from these stats I should be worried about?

Kings hand I think you can bet more on the flop, it's not a spot where you're incentivised to bluff (3 way pot with someone already all in) so villain shouldn't float much so I'd prefer betting bigger as 99-QQ is going to call pretty much any size and potentially set up a turn shove if you bet $1.60ish. I think 99-QQ would find it more difficult to fold vs two larger bets than three smaller ones (although maybe they should stack off vs either line and villain here did just have garbage).

K9 hand I think you can stab at it at these stakes as players are more likely to cry fold pocket pairs because they're scared of the ace. Also I think the pool at 5nl will generally bet all their Ax here meaning their checking range is pretty much guaranteed to be weakness (KK probably the top of their range and will struggle to call if you fire flop & turn). Also worth noting I'd prefer to have any other suit of K9 as they all have back door flush draws which would allow you to barrel more turns with confidence.

Cheers mate! I keep forgetting to post hands on that discord thing lol.

Plan for tonight is to play 1k hands or so, not starting until a couple hours since there is footy to catch up on first

Finished early tonight, going to watch a film and have a few drinks for the rest of the night and just relax. Today was a really good day, played well and I ran well which is excellent! Might play some spin and go's or PLO/Stud later on (these are my go to games when i've been drinking, they are a lot of fun )

Most of my profit came from the first session which was only 120ish hands because my poor old dog needed a walk before bed just as I was running hot

Tomorrow is Sunday, I may decide to play in the Sunday Storm but I doubt it, usually just stick to cash online. It's live I prefer playing tournaments. Sometimes i'm in the mood though, we'll see!

On another note, first coupon of the season i'm waiting on Rangers to win £90 (4 team accumulator, Wigan, Hearts and Peterborough all won) I could cash out for a £30 profit right now but where's the fun in that eh

Would be the 3rd season in a row I get a coupon up in the 1st week, but then I don't win again for the rest of the season

Have a good Saturday night everyone!

#4 - Another hand I wasn't too happy with the way I played, got check-raised twice but hit the nuts on the river. Bet the turn since I saw the check as a sign of weakness, scared of the 4 card straight out there but just had too much equity to fold. Maybe even shove the turn?

Nothing much interesting happened tonight, 2 good hands, 1 hand where I value-owned myself and another couple I marked for review. Didn't feel as if I played as well as the previous few days, but I was happy with my patience and discipline.

#1 - Was worried about quads here but just calling the river felt weak, going to get called by worse a lot of the time if he had quads then fair play.

As you could probably tell by some of these hands, definitely didn't play my best. No excuses really, just an off day though. Suppose it's alright just losing 2BIs having an off day, not a lot by any means. I'm at 49k hands now, will reach 50k tomorrow and then will probably take a day off to study/read some stuff for starting 10NL it's been aaaaages since I last played 10NL so will probably be asking for advice etc on the forums as everyone seems to be helpful

I was thinking of staying at 5NL for a while longer since I seem to be doing really well there and I won't have to basically start again with having no stats/info on any opponents etc but as Bl1zz said my thread is called 'Moving Up Stakes Challenge' soooo there is no excuse is there i'm in no rush to move up but 5NL isn't really much of a challenge if i'm honest. I know people say 100K hands at a level to know how you're really doing but at these stakes is that really necessary? I feel 50k should suffice.

Anyway, here is a rundown of all my sessions tonight:
  • Session 1 - -£2.39 (252 hands)
    Session 2 - +£5.62 (251 hands)
    Session 3 - -£1.55 (253 hands)
    Session 4 - +£1.36 (300 hands)
    Session 5 - -£8.09 (254 hands)
    Total Loss - £5.05 (1,310 hands)

Hope people out there are still interested! Feel free to leave any comments/criticism or advice about any hands I played, it's always appreciated be as tough as you like I can take it don't worry!
