The 2 most important things for my game right now:

1) Take a 5 min break every 55 min.

2) Verbalize my thought process the entire time I play. Say my thoughts out loud!

The 2nd one saves me from playing mindlessly. I also want to point out a trend I notice:

==The night after a hard run (Say I run farther than normal) I am usually too tired to win at poker.

I've so often gotten in a great run, went to work for 8ish hours and then come home and played only to delve into a mindless funk and wonder why I'm not as great at life as I thought I was.

==Got some new tires on the Corolla yesterday and for what it is the car rides like a dream now. (Had some cheapo tires with the thread almost gone before that. The steering wheel would shake whenever I went above 70mph.) Has me toying with the idea of driving to the casino to play live. I actually have 6K in savings that could technically be used as a BR. However, I'm annoyed that I haven't beaten 50NL reg cash on Ignition. Plus, I'd much rather use a BR that I built up from playing online. This will force me to continue building my skill. I don't think my game is good enough right now to crush live.

Goals: 10/14-10/20

[] Take a break every 55 min

[] Verbalize my thought process the entire session, every session

I think both of these are so important to my game right now and they are not even that difficult. It's just a matter of being mindful of these two goals thru the entire week. I can do this.

Didn't play a ton, but managed to meet my goals. I took a break every 55 min and I talked throughout the entire sessions. I do find the talking so helpful. A couple of sessions my talking was clearly more sparse and slower. I found myself seeing my thought process much more clearly by verbalizing it. These two sessions I was playing at weird hours and tired. I like how doing the verbalizing I get a clear indication of whether I'm fit to play or not.

==The casino that's 55min away is getting e-tables in the near future. They used to have them at the casino in town. What I like about them is that they deal more hands per hour. Also, there's virtually no mistakes. So I'm starting to look forward to hitting them up some of the time. Still want to build more of a roll tho thru playing on Ignition. Want to improve my game as well.

==I recently memorized RFI's for LJ thru SB. Pretty stoked to start using charts from memory.

==I started playing on a coed soccer team w/friends from NA. Pretty awesome and fun, but it's def been cutting into poker time. On the bright side I haven't been in physical condition like this in prob 10 yrs when I was marathon training. This week I've been doing some upper body and leg exercises and a ton of core exercises. Weighed myself this morning: 158lbs. I'm 5'9". Still pretty scrawny, but pretty cool to see some muscle definition and that ripped look. I attribute half of it to diet. Been doing a few vegan days past 2 or three weeks. I still eat meat, but it's nice to mix in these vegan days.

==The girl I'm into from NA is pretty awesome. We've been texting for like 1.5 weeks now. (I'm such a middle schooler by sharing this stuff btw.) She's only 6 months clean and married to an abusive a-hole so there's a lot to sort out before a real relationship can come out of it. Plus, I feel like a dirty old man going after someone w/less than a year clean. That's called 13th stepping. I'm in no hurry. It's fun being into her and I think I have a lot of recovery experience to share with her. I know some in NA prey on newcomers. That's not me. I'm into her, but I'm not out to hurt her. Quite the opposite. I will keep sharing about it w/NA friends to keep myself in check.

I think this hand is indicative of huge leaks in my game. Ott, what do we beat? Otf, I was thinking we might improve to FH ott and get stacks in vs straights. There's 2 problems w/this: 1) We might be up against QJ or JT for better FH's if a Q or a J comes. 2) Some Villains won't get stacks in w/straights on a paired board. We're also up against better sets--QQ and JJ--tho they're prob gonna raise a lot pre. So I hate the turn call. This Villain didn't exhibit any maniac tendencies. I would need a read to call here. Against standard tightish reg this is a fold. Fold otf? I actually don't think it's that crazy given what card do we want to see ott? Villain is raising the flop 4-way.

Too nitty to fold otf. I doubt he has QQ, and he might have a partial JJ. Maybe a small partial of AK, some K9s, a lot of 98s, some QJ/QT/JT.

Turn can probably be a fold. Small sample size, but nitty stats and he is continuing. We have AK 98s QQ JJ that play as better calls that are higher in our range. We can probably fold TT KK AA and if we call flop with two pair like QJs.

FWIW, probably not folding against the blinds.

Been putting together some good sessions by verbalizing my thoughts and taking a break every 55min. I've also been making a big deal out of hands and spots in which I'm confused or feel like I have questions about. Having the nagging need to find answers to situations is where I expand my game.

Played 8 sessions so far this week. All an hour or less. Been just fitting them in where I can and I continue to take the break at the 55-60min mark. All of the sessions I've taken the break if I've gotten to that point and I've done my best to verbalize my thought process. My game is so different because of these two things. It really minimizes falling into mindless-button-clicking mode. I'm more aware, more conscious of what I am doing. This enables me to identify spots in which I have questions. And by identifying question spots and bringing them to the forums as well as working on them on my own I can improve my game.

Btw, I want to say that at times I've played poker as an escape. I cut out my biological parents and sister from my life some years ago. It was a very painful thing to do, but the right thing as they are very toxic and severely net negatives in my life. But I've always enjoyed poker too. I love math, psychology, and competition. What a wonderful blend of the three poker is.

So at this point in life--with GF now ex-GF--what's holding me back from taking my game to higher levels. My time will continue to be limited by time I spend w/my daughter and working over 40h/wk. Only if I one day went pro would I be able to free up the 40+ h of work and devote it to poker. That appears to be awesome, but I don't even know that I want that. I like poker as a hobby and at most side job from this vantage point. Also, IRT (in regard to) time I plan on also hitting 3 NA meetings each week as well as doing workouts and runs. It's a lot to pack in as it's always been. I hope to continue to improve my organization skills and continue to find ways to be more efficient w/my time and energy.

This brings me to discuss getting into another relationship. I have to be honest that poker was big part of why we broke up. W/o going into detail if I spend 20h/wk on poker when I already have a busy life how is there going to be any time left for a GF. I point this out because over the past few months since the breakup I've in some ways pursued other women and thought about getting into another relationship. I think what I really want is some of the perks of a relationship, but I really don't want to get into the time commitment that a relationship requires to exist. I'd rather spend my time on poker. Been stoked about playing on IG and studying and I look forward to hitting up the poker room that's 55min away some when it finally opens. W/o a GF it's also easier to plan trips to Vegas or other casinos. I do need some social life tho. Got some good friends in NA. Also, posting on 2+2 has always functioned as part social and part poker nuts and bolts for me. I might drive some cab on the side too which is part social and part profit.

==Poker seems like a positive mental outlet. My job can be pretty boring and monotonous. Thinking about poker during down time seems like a great use of the time.

==At this point in my poker journey I want to maintain work on my game everyday if I can. I want to keep it going for as long as I can. Sure I might miss 1 day. But I want to avoid straying into chess or a relationship or whatever and give poker a solid shot across days, weeks, months. I want to play some, study some every day as much as I can.

Been playing as much as I can while making some effort to maintain social life and be sure to take care of responsibilities. Not sure why it took me so long to establish the fact that I don't have time for the relationship type I've most often seen myself in. Ok so I want to sleep 63h/wk or 9h/n. I tend to feel great on this amount of sleep and I figure the extra hour pays for itself in being more on the ball when playing poker as well as the rest of life. In reality I usually don't sleep more than 8h. Often much less. But if I were to plan out the 168 hours in a week that's what I'd give myself for sleep. I'd give myself 20h to devote to NLHM play and study. 43.5h/wk toward work. Probably 7h/wk driving between to and from work and picking up my daughter from school. Throw in errands and social events. Then there's hygiene activities; dishes; laundry; apartment cleaning; car maintenance; journaling; leisure such as reading the news; playing w/the cat; and more. Oh yeah, time spent w/my daughter and social life. Lotta hours between the two, especially the former.

So I started considering breaking down the remaining 105hours left after the 63 devoted to sleep. I think a lot of people who work a lot of hours or are in college and take it seriously can relate to looking at time in this fashion. It makes me want to and be more conscious of cutting out BS interactions w/people in NA and elsewhere. My time is precious and my interactions ought be meaningful.

I had a pretty great day hanging out w/a friend from NA. Picked her up and we hit a meeting together. She said our friend Julie collapsed over the weekend and that she was diagnosed w/terminal cancer w/a year to live at best. Since we often don't share one another's last names in NA we have to describe physical appearance and such to make sure we are on the same page at times(I know lots of last names and share mine pretty freely there as well). Anyway, my sponsee joined us in going to the hospital because he knew this person as well. But when we got there it was someone I don't ever remember meeting before. What a trip. And maybe there's something wrong w/me, but I could not stop laughing. I did my best to keep it together in the room w/the person I didn't know who was diagnosed w/a year to live. But my buddy and sponsee had texted his pseudo GF on the way to the hospital talking about how broken up he was. So w/the build up to going up to this person's room and being like whoa, that's not Julie--well, I thought it was hilarious. So tragic tho ofc that this other lady has terminal cancer. That's not funny at all.

Btw, been looking over video and looking up what Villains had quite a bit. Been making a big deal of mistakes and thinking about poker a lot. This is part of how I improve my game. It was maybe a few months ago that I started thinking of my hole cards as belonging to one of 4 categories as the hand progresses. Also, I've been spelling out possible hole card holdings of Villains as hands progress. In general I've been putting a lot more thought into my game. The 2 rules I laid out: 1)Verbalize my thoughts. 2)Take a break every 55-60min. These two things are huge. Otherwise I will continue to encourage myself to let hands bug me. I will continue to post some of them and to think about them on my own.

I want to point out that in recent weeks I've almost solely been playing 50NL. It's been the stakes at which I've struggled. Across 50,728 hands played from December 2017 thru August 2018 I lost at -2.89 ev BB/100 for a total of -$747. Now, 8,372 hands later, I'm at -.81 ev BB/100 for a total of -$12. I do realize I could be sun running over the last 8k hands, but I think I'm actually playing much much better regardless of however a true win rate would break down over those 8k hands. It's resulted from a combination of table selection and consistently bringing a stronger game to the tables every session. I plan on mostly sticking w/50NL until BR is 3K. This go around in which I started playing poker again in November 2017 or 1 year ago I originally deposited 750 or 30BI's at 25NL. I moved up to 50NL around 1500 or 30BI's. I'm comfortable w/30BI's and thus plan on doing the same IRT moving up to 100NL. Plus, I'd rather leave 50NL after having beaten it than I would forever having it be this sore spot or challenge that I never overcame. (Of course it's ultimately about winning money. Still, beating stakes, and accomplishing feats along the way builds game and confidence and wins money in the end I think.)

Played 2432 hands of 50NL and 9 hands of 100NL last week. Got 3 ~3mi R's in; 2 at better than 8min/mi pace. Did 2 pull-up workouts. (My work buddy loaned me a pull-up bar that doesn't work where he lives. I loved it from the get go and gave him 20 for it. Well worth it. Good for my spine and my arms need the workout.)

Pretty good week overall. Got some good social activity in to balance out the playing and studying. I've been having fun watching some poker videos recently. Also, reading some and looking over video and looking up what V's had a lot. Been enjoying all of it. But I did notice today cutting it pretty thin IRT getting to work on time. I hate being in such a rush when I drop my daughter off at the babysitters. I forgot the bag of snacks and toys that we had packed together because I was in such a rush. I worry about wasting time by showing up to work 15 min early or something like that. Maybe I could get some study in during that down time. If I hang out in the hallway tho it's going to be a mix of study and work banter. That's not all bad tho; it's usually fun and sometimes I pick up work related tips.

So this week I hope to manage time better around the time I spend with my daughter. Oh, I also want to mention that I want to get more school in with her as well as more activity (sledding; playing in the snow; board games; puzzles; science experiments; etc) and less screen time. This will require me to be sharp w/time management. I still want to get >2K hands in. Not going to quantify how much time I want to spend studying, but I want to study as much as I can. Besides at least 3 runs I want to get in 4 core workouts (2xcore1 and 2 x core2); 3 pull-up workouts; 3 chest workouts and that'll do it.

Btw, at 59912 50NL hands played my WR is .49BB/100 and my ev BB/100 is -.64 (an improvement from -2.89).

Also, I have to poke fun at the title of my thread and how things played out w/GF moving out and becoming ex-GF. It may appear I failed to maintain that balance in the title. But I'm happy. I get to focus more on poker. I still get to be a great dad. I still spend about as much time w/my daughter as I would have w/o the breakup. She went into kindergarten barely 5 years old and could read 1st grade books. During reading time she's in her own group because the other kids are still working on recognizing works like "like" and "sat". So that's pretty cool. I've been a little complacent since kindergarten started tho irt teaching her more. She's got a great teacher and has still advanced since the start of the school year despite me not teaching her much more. But I want to get back into it this week. I want at least 2 good school seshes as well as a lot of general play. (My hope is to have her learning calculus in 7th grade. I'm half kidding here. But we'll see.)

==Btw, had one of my worst sessions in probably 10-20 sessions or a week and a half or so. I think I had some music playing; know I was eating some veggies; got a new desk chair that I like, but it smells like dryer sheets(bought used) which is annoying and distracting(was more distracting when I didn't know where the smell was coming from). Some of my attention was focused on where my hams meet my glutes or a spot that has a tendency to knot up. I had been sitting on an exercise ball which prevents said knot from forming, but creates knots in other spots. So between the music, the food, the smell, the new way of sitting, and being tired it seemed a bit of a struggle to think clearly. Shortly after I played another session w/the intention of getting in a good session: no food(other than almonds, which I allow); no music; already know where the smell is coming from and wasn't going to let it bother me; and was feeling more energetic. Think I played alright. (The thing about eating food is that it makes it hard to verbalize my thought process when I am chewing. The music can get me daydreaming a bit and not verbalizing as much as I want to.) Won over 3BI this last session. Good results and my game has been better lately, but I still don't want to be complacent.

==I probably ran ridiculously good over the past 10K hands or so. I know I've been playing better than ever too tho. It mostly comes down to not being as distracted and pulled in so many ways while playing. In the almost 7 yrs that I've been playing poker this is probably the most distraction free I've been.

Pre I made sure to not raise so much that my only option would be to call once the SS shoved; I wanted to be able to re-pop it. Had we simply shoved UTG would have folded and HJ would maybe still come along, but would fold some of the time I think. So this play accomplished 2 things: 1)It trapped UTG's 5.75 call. 2) It allowed HJ to drive the action and gii weak. The usual mistake I've made plenty of times in the past is that I would raise so big in this spot that I wouldn't be able to reraise after HJ's shove. Having said all of this tho I have to question a bit how it would have gone if we had only called HJ's shove. It would have been 8.43 for UTG to call and close the action pre. It seems like they are calling in this spot a lot. Then we shove any flop? I mean pot would be ~48 and we'd have ~34 effective. Maybe this would on some flops win more from UTG if they say hit TPTK otf and were then willing to gii w/the low SPR. Also, I gotta say I messed up the timing when I shoved over HJ's shove. I insta-shoved. If I had tank shoved I think UTG calls w/ a wider range.

Played for 6h tonight. Played 1h straight then 5h straight. I don't like that I didn't take my break every 55-60 min. I don't think I verbalized as well as I do when I take the break and I don't think I played great. I was pretty tired too from only getting 5.5h of sleep the previous night. Thus, I'd say a bout of Degen mode. I had a nice stretch of pretty solid sessions. Didn't spew horribly tonight--dropped 2BI to a BR of 2764. So still healthy 50NL BR.

Coming into TG I had it in mind to play a lot of poker. Wish I would have saved it for the day time tho as I would have been fresher and consuming caffeine. I would have been sharper. The big takeaway from this is a reminder of the importance of the break. It's like I can take a step back and process the info I was exposed to over the hour and sort of consolidate that. Then I can play the next hour w/a clearer mind if I'm still up for playing. It also is a check point at which I can check myself to be sure I'm up for playing more.

Going forward I want to resume the verbalizing thoughts and the breaks. I also want to do a better job of balancing poker and exercise. I need to schedule my runs and workouts because I find myself missing them.

I find that the best time to take workouts to stick with them is as soon as you wake up. I use to workout every morning first thing, and I never missed one because it was part of a routine. When my wife and I got a gym membership and she wanted to workout with me, I've been lucky to get 2 workouts in per week, because it's no longer a routine. And that morning routine is the easiest to keep, because it's part of waking up.

Also, wouldn't advise playing 5 straight hours online cash. Information overload imo. Best is to play 2 to 3 hour sessions, with some sort of substantial break in between. Good luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!

^Thanks man, I agree. The best I've stuck to workouts was when I would do them in the morning. I think I will get back to this starting this upcoming week. As for the breaks, I intend to continue taking a break every 55-60min.

Otf I want to protect our hand from flush draws, but when we raise and get re-raised I think we are up against a really strong range. I think QQ+ is mostly raising pre. So I think we are up against 66, 44, sometimes JJ, and FD's. I think by just calling pre and evaluating ott we keep AJ, KJ, QJ in SB's range. It also keeps HJ in w/a wide, weak range.

Not the first time I've gotten it in otf in scenarios similar to this w/OP's. Something I'm still working on. Will probably post this in Micro-Small Stakes. I will look up a similar hand I posted there w/QQ too.

==I plan on sticking w/50NL until I reach 3K. I hope to increase my evbb/100 at 50NL along the way.

==There's a fair amount going on in my personal life right now, but I do not have time to go into detail right now. Car repair needed(new clutch); looking forward to moving out of this apartment when the lease is up end of Feb; been hanging out w/ a friend from NA and started to be more into her. I gotta say I am thoroughly enjoying life. It is far from perfect, but I think I've been really good at finding the humor in it recently. I'm probably really excited to be so close to 3K BR and be working on my game so much too. I think I'm very hopeful about the future, but at the same time I see that it could go very badly w/o warning. I feel very accepting of where I'm at in life, gonna continue to make the most of each day.

Played for ~1.5 h td. I like the way I played the first hour. Saw one or two small mistakes I made. The 2nd part of the sesh (took the break at the 55min mark) I made at least one mistake bluff shoving ~35 into 30 otr. Sometimes there's that turn x-c from Villain that is a commitment by them to call otr. That's my intuitive read on the sich from playing experience and I've seen experts say the same. Thought I'd get a fold on a T-high board when they checked to me, but instead it was a quick call. During this sesh I did see myself hold myself back from gii otr in a couple other siches in which V's called big turn bets. I will keep examining these scenarios as there's relatively a lot of bb's involved and they come up often enough.

Going to go for a run. I got tired after the 1st hour. It's due to not enough sleep, not the great sleep I get when I have enough running in my weeks, and not ensuring that my sleeping environment is as distraction free as it can be.

At 65407 50NL hands: bb/100 is 1.02; EVbb/100 is .32.

==Still into the girl I mentioned a few posts ago. We hung out on TG--went to a movie together. I'm concerned about my limited time tho--not sure I have enough left for a GF. I def don't want to quit poker.

==My diet has been better than ever in recent weeks and months. It's become more and more tuned for performance. I want what I eat to support work, poker, and relationships.

==Been probably running on less sleep lately. Not drastically so, but been practicing performing on less. That's why a diet geared to reduce stress and deliver nutrients efficiently is so important.

==Going forward I want to remind myself to let hands in which I have questions bug me. I want that drive that motivates me to study them, post them and such.

==It seemed like BR rode a rocket ship from 1610 on 10/9 to 2771 on 11/20 and has stagnated since. I think my game was a little off around TG and since. Played really well this morning for 1.5h.

==I started allowing myself to play up to 2h straight w/o a break. Will keep an eye on it and switch back to 55min break mark if needed. Sometimes I'm on tho and can keep going. W/limited time it can be helpful to grind straight thru.

==Played 1 table of 100NL this morning as I could not find a decent 50NL table.

==I want to strive for the perfectly played session. Sure, hairs could be split over what's more correct in spots, but every session I want to be striving for committing no glaring mistakes. I think early on in the session and at the end of the session are the two areas in which I make the most mistakes. Early on in the session my brain is still warming up. Near the end of the session my brain might be a little tired. I notice I sometimes open wider than normal from LJ to play one last hand before I close the session. Today I played 22 from LJ which I wouldn't normally do(usually play 55+). Then I made a couple of other mistakes in the hand which cost me ~20bb's.

We have the 2nd nuts after quad 9's. What card are we afraid of otr that we need to raise to protect our equity here? If we just call Villain might bet again otr or call otr. It appears clearly more +ev to just call ott.

Still at it, but not playing much recently. The girl I mentioned earlier is pretty much GF now. Kinda funny how into her I was when I first met her and now we talk everyday and hang out a ton. Life's ****ing weird sometimes. Still getting to know her tho. She's older than me, but I'm into her so what does age matter?

Think I've been playing well when I do play. NOT gonna let my game slip. Been hella fun to play when I have the chance. Getting pretty close to 3k too. Will move up to 100NL. But still could be a long time before I get there. We'll see.
