Week 6:

Hands Played: 3453

+42

BR: 1321

[X] Do 1 >= 4 mi run

[X] Bike to and from work 2 days or substitute 3 mi run(s)

[] Do 20-30 min core workouts 4 days

[X] Study 5 hours

[X] Play only 3 or fewer tables at a time (except for when switching out tables)

[] Play every session at grade "B" or better

[] Arrive at work 12 min prior to start time

The play at grade "B" or better goal just doesn't work. I don't have that much control over tilt and such.

[] Look up every big fold to see what Villain had.

[X] Spew for >= 40bb's in 10 or fewer hands the rest of the week.

Happy to have met the spew >= 40bb's in 10 or fewer hands goal. This metric works much better than the grading system. I don't think I've looked up every big fold and as for calculating what I saved I think that is more complex and takes more time than I initially anticipated. I'd have to come up w/ranges and equities and it should be doable, but my time is limited. Anyway, I had 4 big spew hands which I posted ITT. Looks like I spewed 438bb's in those 4 hands alone. I prob could have been up 219 more at this point. So I think this goal is really helpful bc I am taking a hard look at a leak that is HUGE.

I only did 2.25 workouts. Happy to have done the 4mi run. I just let my goals get piled up at the end of the week and then there was easter. Met my arrive early goal 4 of the 5 days. Gonna keep at it. The study goals I haven't been using a stopwatch, but whenever I post hands ITT, look up what V's had, watch poker video, read poker books, look at hand histories of others, etc--I know I get 5+ hours in each week.

I guess I should be pretty happy w/volume as I did stick to only playing 3 tables except when switching out a table. I think this helps my game a lot as I need the extra time to think and pay attention to the action. I'm just not that good to handle 4 tables at once.

Week 7 Goals:

[] Do 1 >= 4 mi run

[] Bike to and from work 2 days or substitute 3 mi run(s)

[] Do 20-30 min core workouts 4 days

[] Study 5 hours

[] Play only 3 or fewer tables at a time (except for when switching out tables)

[] Arrive at work 12 min prior to start time

[] Spew >= 40bb's in 2 or fewer hands

Pretty much the same goals except I took out the grade B goal. Also, I increased the challenge w/the big spew hands as I am shooting for 2 or fewer. I really want to double the sets I do in the workouts, essentially doubling the workouts bc I want a stronger core and more strength all around and the workouts are fun. But going to just focus on increasing the reps for now. Don't think I'm quite ready to meet the goal of doubling the workouts. Would like to get in 2 runs instead of just one as well as I find myself a little sore from the one 3 or 4 mi run. Seems pathetic as I used to run 18 mi and almost not be sore. But w/so much time spent on poker it's hard to fit more exercise in.

Hand 1 I think bet just under 8 ott to keep Villain in the hand. Hand 2 I think I shoulda shoved OTT. Both hands I didn't slow down and think enough. Hand 2 I thought Villain had AK and matched ott and therefore would bet for me. Villain ended up having A4dd. Not sure how they called the raise otf. Maybe they thought they'd bluff good turn and/or river cards if we X'd.

Played for about an hour. The QT hand I know is a fold otr. This is something I'm working on. It's usually something weird like the 64cc Villain had. The AK hand that ran up against a turned gutter straight sucked. Thought about jamming the flop in that hand.

Hand 1: Don't feed the nits. This Villain wouldn't be bluff raising the river; just not that type of V.

Hand 2: We should be betting the flop. V prob would have folded pp at some point if we started betting the flop. Plus, if we hit we could win a big pot. 1) Deny equity. 2) Win a big pot if we hit.

Hand 3: Prob should be raising the flop I think. But as played it's a fold otr. Bluffs this big in the absolute sense just aren't that common at 50NL. We'd have to have info on Villain suggesting that they are capable of this in order to make the call. Plus, the turn bet seemed sized in a way that said Villain wanted a call. Flush draws usually go bigger than that. The combination of the turn bet and the fact that most V's are afraid to throw out prob more than 10 dollars w/o the nuts make it a fold.

Hand 1: Just fold pre. Wtf. Just fold pre.

Hand 2: I was distracted by my daughter during this hand. I had UTG pegged for a fish bc of stack size. But min-raise, 2 callers, a 3b, and a small 4b is prob a indication of strength. I was mostly torn between calling and shoving. I think it's fine to fold pre. If UTG's stack was maybe 20 or less I'd prob be fine w/gii.

Played last night from about 12a-2a. I plan on carving out the 12a-2a time slot Wed thru Sun to play as well as 10p-2a on Mon and Tue (my days off). I want to avoid playing past 2a as I want to wind down and go to sleep b4 3a. I want to journal and/or post ITT about hands played and how the sesh went overall. When I play past 2a I get even more tired. Then I try to go from playing to sleep and that doesn't work so well. I have all this information in my head that needs processing. By having the 2a-3a buffer zone between play and sleep and ample time to journal/post as well as stretch, eat, brush my teeth, etc. I think I am able to stay in a healthy, productive routine. The times I've played past 2a I've not slept well and the next day is more of a struggle than it should be.

2a is late enough as it is. I feel like I'm packing a lot into my week, but it also seems doable. I won't play everyday and I won't always play the whole allotted time slot. I'm just sick of getting distracted and having it affect my play. Plus, these hours are softer in general I think. I will leave the daytime to get in workouts; spend time w/my daughter; clean; study; etc.

Week 7 Goals:

[] Bike to and from work 3 days or substitute 3 mi run(s)

[] Do 30 min core workouts 5 days

[] Study 5 hours

[] Arrive at work 15 min prior to start time

[] Spew >= 40bb's in 1 or fewer hands

[] Play only between 12a-2a on days I work and between 10p-2a on days off

Well missed the 4mi run in week 7. Just so busy and the run is tiring. I think it requires me to sleep more that night to recover. I took out the run in week 8. I think the biking and workouts are enough exercise across the week. I might still do a 3 mi run tho. But I could easily find myself biking to and from work 5 times in the week which would be enough cardio for me. I'm still stoked about poker despite my lackluster results so far. That's why I don't want to worry about the run. I only have so much time and I want to keep working on my poker game.

Well, I upped my workout goal too. 5 days this week instead of 4. In week 7 I did not give myself the X in that box. I actually met my workout volume goal there, but I did extra sets of some exercises, while doing fewer of some others. I'm really just being extra hard on myself there by not giving myself the X. I've been enjoying the workouts and eager to do more there. And by doing them at home I'm able to get other things done around doing the sets. Mixing in some exercise w/other responsibilities feels great.

I biked to and from work 4 days in Week 7. I enjoy it for the most part. It's been cold on the way home, but if I dress appropriately it's fine. It should be a lot warmer from here on out anyway.

I'm sure I studied >5 hours. Didn't time it, but I spend time everyday studying. I even posted a hand in Micro-Small Stakes forum yesterday. Will continue w/this goal.

I did play only 3 or fewer tables. Think I needed it and think it was helpful. Took this goal out for Week 8. I will strive to be mindful of where I'm at mentally and adjust number of tables accordingly in Week 8. I played 4 tables last night and felt really on top of my game. I started out w/4 to then choose the best 3 as I had been doing. All 4 tables turned out to be good and I felt good so I stuck w/all 4 (as it was a new week being past 12a and it didn't affect my goal at that point). Also, by having the goal to play only at night when my family is sleeping and I'm distraction-free I think playing 4 tables is much more ok. I know I missed some of the action doing 4 tables last night. My game is just not there. An expert player prob pretty much has 99.9% of decisions mapped out and therefore can pay better attention to all the action. But I still need to deliberately step thru some decision points and therefore I have to hone in on 1 or 2 tables in which I am in hands on and then I miss what's going on on the other tables. I will even continue thinking about the hand or hands after the fact and try to determine mistakes and what I could have done better, etc.

I upped the arrive at work to 15 min prior despite not meeting the 12 min goal in Week 7. This goal has helped a lot. Haven't met it at all, but I show up earlier than if I didn't have this goal. 15 min prior as a habit has been where I want to go w/this and I will continue to work toward that.

Spew >=40 bb's in 1 or fewer hands. I hope I don't spew >=40bb's in any hands. Anyway, set the bar higher in Week 8.

The "Play only between 12a-2a...10p-2a..." goal I'm stoked about. Been playing only these hours the past few days and it's been awesome because it's distraction-free time. I've had the urge to play in the daytime. But by committing to only playing these hours I think it makes my poker game better and that life balance thing better. Also, it gives me something to look forward to. It's nice to have some separation between play and the rest of life. Plus, I might study more, think about the game more because I'm not just going to play whenever I feel like it. Take yesterday morning for instance. I felt like playing. But because of my commitment I did not play and posted a hand in Micro-Small instead. I think this goal is the beginning of something great.

Ugh, this hand. I had just started my sesh last night. Thought I'd iso fish w/ATo, which I don't think is that great to begin w/, but 2 50bb stacks. One prob here is I don't yet know how they play. Another is that 50bb is more than the ~25bb I often see. I had just woken up from a nap too so my gears weren't quite moving as fast as I wanted them to. OTF I seriously considered folding. Villain was betting to gii here. Are they really betting a worse T? We have the Ad so that takes a lot of draws out. Also, the sizing. If Villain had just shoved I think I'd snap call as they often do that w/a draw. OTT I used most of my time bank b4 calling. It was a frustrating way to start off the sesh. It might sound crazy, but I think I just fold OTF next time. Like I said the flop sizing. I knew going in that ATo would be a tricky hand to play in a 3bet pot. I gotta be willing to let it go. I don't even think folding pre is that bad. Calling would be ok too. Btw, I think it's pretty bad for Villain to call the 3bet w/33 as their stack isn't deep enough.

Ugh, this hand. I had just started my sesh last night. Thought I'd iso fish w/ATo, which I don't think is that great to begin w/, but 2 50bb stacks. One prob here is I don't yet know how they play. First of all, I love this thread man, keep it going. I’m thinking about doing something similar.

Secondly, I play on Ignition and Bovada, and bought DriveHud the other day. Upon installation I chose “auto import” for hands. How do I view/review my hand history in drive?

^Make sure you are on the "Dashboard" tab and the hands you played are listed at the bottom of the screen. Double click on a hand and it brings it up in replayer mode. Right click to export it to 2+2 or whatever.

Villain had A9cc

Seeing what Villain had in this hand threw me for a loop. Their stats made them look uber-nit. My plan calling pre was to set mine. I just went thru all of their hole cards leading up to this hand and the best hand I think they got was KJo in UTG leading up to this. They had A5s in the blinds twice and folded instead of squeezing. Had JTo and QJo. Otherwise total garbage. This has me reconsidering how I view the HUD stats I use.

Villain had only been at the table like 3 hands in this hand. I remember I thought I'd go for the steal pre as Villain appeared to be super tight glancing at their stats. But it didn't register until after the fact that they had only played 3 hands. I prob would have just folded pre in that case. I don't know if we ever fold to the 3bet vs unknown. J8 came to mind ofc. Think the gii is prob fine. Sets, 2pair, overpairs. Some villains will gii w/these. From this vantage point I think it's just a cooler.

I thought V had KK-JJ. But weird, FOS line from me that may not have gotten the job done even if that was their range. What would I be repping, A9? I know I've been setting goals lately to not spew and I'm not going to decide right now whether to include this as such. What I like about the sesh I just played is that I didn't get afraid in big pots. I was able to think clearly about ranges and play accordingly. Usually when the pot gets big--3bet pots for instance--I stop thinking clearly about where I'm at in the hand. But the same betting, calling, raising, folding, concepts that apply to smaller pots apply to bigger pots. I think my newfound confidence comes from studying. Now I admit the above hand is pretty adventurous. But I saw myself play at least a couple other big pots w/ a dexterity that I don't normally have. This is very important. Good players are confident playing big pots; they are not afraid. Sure I'm going to get it wrong some of the time. I'm going to run into the top of V's range, etc. But after the TT hand I posted in the previous post and seeing what V had I started thinking a lot more about ranges and the various options I have to play in situations like that. That hand specifically I think I raise the flop next time.

AFAIK K9o may just be a fold preflop. We don't need to defend our BB in this situation as SB has already done so. Plus, K9o plays fairly poorly in MW pots.

AP, this specific board should probably hit you more than the PFR. While you two have the same hands in your range generally speaking, he has more in the upper echelon (AA, KK, AK, AQ, etc) than you do. You can xr and rep 77, 88, TT, T8s, J9, 87 and balance that with a bluff such as this one. If you do xr this flop though, it should be larger than a min raise. We're still repping a slightly narrow range, and there are still some awful turn cards for our value range - namely, 6, 9, J. These are cards that should hit his continuation range fairly well, hence giving him a worse price and bombing turn.

GL, subbed!

Hey man good to see you grinding again. If you want a sweat sometime let me know.

On the above hand, you should just call the flop bet since ppl play pretty face up on these boards i.e. they will cbet top pair+ and check back a very weak range. So exploit their unbalanced check back range by playing passively when they bet here and attacking aggressively when they check.

AK into AA preflop is not a cooler. AK should be folded.

For your goals I would focus less on the numbers, less on the tangible, and make improving in those areas the goal. More this week than last week. Focus on your feelings, not the numbers.

Good luck!

I def agree w/the fold pre. I think this has been a huge leak in my game. It seems like I am getting a good price to see a flop, but it's multi-way, I'm oop, and holding junk. Plus, it often means I'm taking the first steps of some FPS BS that so often means big spew. The rest of what you said makes sense as well I think. Thanks!

IRT gii AK in preflop I think it depends on the situation.

IRT hitting goals vs improving in those areas--I appreciate what you said here. I think both aspects--clear cut metrics and general idea of how you are progressing--are important. Thanks Rich!

Played this hand last night and it's bugged me since. I 3bet to iso fish and for value and I thought it was a good spot for BTN to resteal or re-iso vs fish. Figured I had SS's range beat, but just didn't know vs BTN. Was only at the table a few hands at that point. When I saw KK I questioned my poker skills. However, I just did a look at all hands in which Hero 3bet and faced a 4bet of the 26K or so 50NL hands I have in my HM2 database. After looking at it gii here doesn't look terrible. Sucks tho that SS is gonna have a lot of AX in their range. But we're gonna get a fold from BTN some of the time. In that case we have SS's Ax range crushed. Some of the time it'll be like BTN w/JJ and SS w/66 or random junk. That's as far as I will go w/the analysis for now. Let's just say I'm compelled to continue moving hands to my database and to continue working on my game in this fashion.

I started 4betting JJ recently to deny equity. I will look into it some more in HM2, but just a haphazard look at what V's 3bet--like the TT vs A9cc hand I posted recently--makes me inclined to 4bet JJ to protect the equity we have in the hand. I know UTG open vs HJ 3bet is theoretically different--that is, tighter ranges--than CO vs BTN 3bet. But I have a hunch that at 50NL ignition 4betting JJ here is fine. Otherwise some good folds and some bets that worked out. The K4cc hand should have been folded pre I think. That's something that I've been pointing out here and there itt, especially recently.

As stated in the previous post, 4betting JJ is pretty new to me. After the hand I was thinking that had I only called the 3bet I may have been able to turn my hand into a bluff post-flop since we have position. So I'm still learning here. I think JJ should be 4bet in some spots given what and the frequency w/which V's 3bet. But w/position we can leave some poker to be played post-flop. As played we have 36% equity vs a range of AK, QQ+. So the call is about break-even. W/the 4 dollar rake it's slightly -ev.

The AA hand I really wish I would have slowed down and given it more thought ott. I often raise ott w/strong draws. But the sizing--V just put in half his/her stack here. It's clear they want to gii. I would raise maybe 15 w/a strong draw--say I had a 4 here. But what 4 would BTN have here other than A4? In that case I would have bet flop I think. 54? Anyway, I think I had only been at the table maybe 10-20 hands, but Villain didn't even show any signs of pushing draws hard anyway. W/o info and w/the sizing I think it's a fold. Tho sometimes I see what I call a "go away bet" and that also played into my thinking. Sometimes I see this PSB or overbet on the flop and it doesn't add up. This early in the hand if V really had a value hand here why are they betting 6.00 into a 4.95 pot. I've found that a lot of times this is a bluff. I don't see the "go away bet" as much ott tho and not for this sizing from gen pop. Villain would have to be a particular maniac and in that case we'd have that info on V even w/this few hands I think. Wish I would have folded.

^Looking at what I wrote above, even a min-raise I think would be betting to gii ott. Villain would have 27.5 and the pot would be 39.25 otr. I guess the bigger sizing charges flush draws more.

Week 8 Report:

Hands Played: 3293

+275

BR: 1651

[] Bike to and from work 3 days or substitute 3 mi run(s)

[] Do 30 min core workouts 5 days

[X] Study 5 hours

[] Arrive at work 15 min prior to start time

[] Spew >= 40bb's in 1 or fewer hands

[] Play only between 12a-2a on days I work and between 10p-2a on days off

It was a good week poker-results-wise, but I did NOT meet any of my goals other than to "study 5 hours". I think that's ok for a week. My poker game has not been where I want it to be and I think I worked pretty hard on my game this past week given the limited time I have. The highlight was going thru the hands in which hero 3bet and faced a 4bet. I've also been doing a better job of not doing the mindless spew that I exhibited in some of the hands I've posted ITT. I didn't randomly bet my stack off across 3 streets. I probably could even give myself the "X" there. I'm not tho because I think there were spots I should have folded, but instead wasted the 40bb's or more.

Workout-wise I started the week off strong doubling the sets I do in each workout. This is where I want to go w/the workouts, but ofc they take twice as long to do and are probably more tiring. But after hitting the 1st 2 WO's I got caught up w/other things. IRT biking to and from work, the weather has been terrible and I let it stop me from biking everyday except I biked home in an inch of snow last night. (Btw, I don't think we've ever had winter weather like this in mid-April here in Wisconsin.)

IRT arriving at work 15 min prior I maybe hit it one day. Still like this goal and it still had me doing better than I would w/o it. One of these weeks tho I'm actually going to hit this goal.

The "play only between..." goal--I almost hit this one. Actually, I could almost give myself the "X" here as well. I took a vacation day on Sunday and thus I let myself play past 2a last night. Then I played some more mid-day since I had some time to myself. I love this goal tho. I found it really helpful. I didn't realize how crazy I was to try to play while I was getting distracted. Playing during distraction free time is the only way to do it. Thus, I will continue w/this goal (or similar).

Hit the parenting hard this past week too. At times I've let my daughter have more screen time than I'd like her to have. I don't want her to rot her brain; plus, I won't ever regret the time I spend w/her. Been hitting the reading and math and even a memory exercise. Biking and puzzles too. Legos. This past week I started having 10a be the time point at which we turn her screens off and do something else. We write out our goals for the day on a white board that we also use for "school". It's been a lot of fun and I plan on continuing this.

Oh, and I decided to pick up some coaching to boost my game. I think just having someone reaffirm some of the things you already know helps make things stick and gives confidence. Otherwise I'm sure there's a lot I don't even see, a lot of mistakes I'm unaware of.

Hand 1: JJ makes perfect sense given the action. I think 2 combos of A3 are possible here too, but I think Villain mostly folds these to the 3bet pre. QQ+ and AK 4bet pre usually. During the hand it was a pretty mindless call. Villain's not playing AJ here and they won't often have QQ or KK as like I said they usually 4bet pre.

Hand 2: This hand is interesting to me bc after HJ bet the flop I was considering shoving. I think I like the call bc it keeps lesser fd's in the hand; bc we might improve to a straight ott(if we're not raised off the hand); and we might be up against a set in which case we have about 33% equity.

==============================================

This far into the week and I haven't created any goals for the week. I'm happy to say that I did arrive at work 15 min prior and it felt great. I enjoy shooting the breeze w/coworkers. I also ran 3mi, which was so badly needed. I only got a bike ride from work in last week when I usually get to-and-froms 4 or 5 days and workouts at home. So here's my goals for the rest of week 9:

[] Be at work 15 min prior to report time every shift

[] Bike to-and-from and/or run 3-4mi a total of 4 times for the week

[] Do CoreWorkout1(CW1) x 2 and CW2 x 2

I decided to split up the workouts I do into smaller groups of exercises. In other words, I will be doing the same sets of exercises only organized differently. I think this will make getting them done more manageable. Also, this week I am only shooting for getting the trunk exercises in and not worrying about legs, arms, chest, and shoulders. Doing so much sitting and growing up w/poor posture makes these core exercises important; they are the difference between being uncomfortable when standing and feeling pretty great when walking, running, or standing. Doing the other exercises is important because I want to be able to easily carry groceries, pick up my daughter, or help someone move furniture, etc.

I'm so hesitant to set poker goals right now. Life felt out of balance today and yesterday. I worked w/my new coach Monday night, which was great. I thought I played my A-game or thereabouts during the sweat session. But I didn't get much sleep Sunday night bc I was finishing up taxes. I had stayed up late Saturday night too. So after the coaching session I probably should have gone to bed. But I played some more on my own and got pretty tilted. My daughter woke up during a big hand w/AK and I misplayed it badly. (I did however manage to get her back to sleep w/o a hitch, which is something. In the future tho I plan on doing both: playing the hand well and get her back to sleep w/o a problem.) These AK hands--I think I would improve my game by studying a lot of AK HH's. I think this is the 3rd one now in which I turned my hand into a bluff and got called by something stupid bc my bluff looked stupid.

Here's where I think I want to go w/ when to play: Monday 10p-2a; Wed 12a-2a(really Thursday morning); Thursday 12a-2a; Friday 12a-3a; Sat 12a-3a. This is 14 hours/wk. I loved the set times to play last week. Sure I didn't stick to it Saturday night and Sunday, but when I set that goal I didn't know I would take Sunday off and it made sense to play outside of the structure. I like that it kept me playing during time that was the most distraction free. I also like that it separates play from the rest of life. I think I study better bc if I don't play whenever I want to I find myself studying bc that's often the next best thing. Also, it makes room to exercise, clean, parent, do relationship stuff, etc. It is pretty grueling I have to admit. This new play schedule I am considering has me playing an hour later on Friday and Saturday, but then not playing at all on Sunday bc I want to relax and go to bed earlier Sunday night so I'm not wasted on Monday. I'd love to play Sunday in the day some, but I've been really into spending time w/my daughter and keeping her off her tablet some. And this just outdoes playing more poker in my mind right now. I would only be getting about 6 hours of sleep Friday and Saturday nights, which seems to be fine as long as it's not like that the entire week. I left Tuesday w/o play too. I played last night (Tuesday night) and it felt like I was sitting w/4 or 5 regs the entire time. And when I'm tired like I was it's easy to tilt from the boredom, the tediousness of trying to outplay someone of equal or better skill level, etc. It just seemed so -ev, especially since I was tired. So if I rest up Tuesday night and start off fresh Wednesday, well I think I will try this next week. Also, these are hours that I may play, but it will be fine to not play all of them. The thing is I want to stick to only playing during the aforementioned time periods. As for this week I am undecided right now.

Hand 1: I think we should just call the flop raise. I don't think V's are bluffing much in this spot and we have two of the .

Hand 2: So after looking at number of lite 4bets in my database I think I adjusted my 5bet shoving range too much. Think I was actually on tilt after the J9 spew hand as well. Facing 4bets is something my coach and I plan on going over on Monday.

Hand 3: Only at the table a couple of hands so Hero is unknown to V and vice versa. Maybe the river bet looked too FOS w/the turn X. Maybe smaller sizing would have looked more credible? Should we have bet turn?

It's hands like this that have made me a break even player at 50NL over 30K hands. This is just spew and I know it. Once they called the turn bet I knew they weren't going to fold a smaller flush otr.

Dropped 11 BI's since Monday night. I 3 tabled for just under 2 h tonight and thought I played pretty well other than that big spew hand. I still want to build a roll and eventually be playing live. Therefore I've got to change my game. I've got to put together solid sessions, develop winning habits.

I was reading some threads in the micros today during downtime at work. Reading there I realize how much I have to learn. This downswing and not having won over 30K hands is humbling. It wasn't too long ago that my BR was above 2K and I was thinking about how I would handle 100NL and wouldn't be long before I cashed out some.

On the bright side I still think I can do this. I like having poker to think about and work on while at work or wherever. I read a Charlie Brown book to my daughter some weeks ago. It was about Linus' blanket. In the end it was pointed out that everyone has their equivalent to Linus' blanket. Poker is my Linus' blanket.

I'm going to continue to be humble. I'm going to post and read in the micros as much as I can. I'm going to find a way to put together good sessions regularly. And I'm going to keep my life in balance along the way. My original goal is to have a BR w/which to play live poker by the 2nd half of 2019. That still gives me 1-1.5 yrs. It should still be doable. For now it's time to start beating 50NL.
