So after only 3 months I officially put in my two week notice at Pala Casino for my job as a "Prop." I put the word prop in quotes because I rarely got to play poker while working due to lack of tables running during the majority of my shifts, and was averaging around 28-32 hours a month playing poker, which simply isn't enough for me. Anyway, I biggest reason why I am going to stop working at Pala is because I got offered a Prop position at Oceans Eleven, which I gladly accepted. More money per hour, more opportunity to play among a lot of other things made it a no brainer for me to accept the new job at Oceans.
I really did enjoy my time at Pala, I met some cool people who I now consider friends and I will miss the relaxed chill nights there. There was just way too many things wrong with the way the Prop position is handled at Pala and I felt that I wasn't getting paid enough money per hour to make it worth my time.
PALA PROP JOB
PROS:
Friendly Co-workers
Extremely Soft Cash Games
Free Meals for Employees
Pala is a good company for in house promotions
Good discounts across the whole casino for Employees
CONS:
Props must run chips and brush while not playing
Props must wear (ugly) uniform while working
Props aren't really needed majority of the time because room is rarely busy for more than 2 games on weekdays
Huge portion of shift is spent standing around watching paint dry
Props aren't jackpot eligible even though our money is spent for the rake
Overstaffed which again leads to lots of standing around
Not enough time and chances to get unstuck if you take some bad beats due to lack of games
I am sure there are more Pros and Cons to the Prop Job at Pala but I am too tired to sit here and think of more but the biggest cons for me about the job was having to wear a uniform during our shifts (only casino that has props that have to be uniformed) which lead to a lot of annoying conversations among other things with some guests that were confused and convinced that the props are in collusion with the dealers
, and the not being jackpot eligible really rubbed me the wrong way (even though the BBJ at Pala is crumbs,) so I pay rake while I play but for some reason my money is no good and I can't get the BBJ!?!? Nonsense, if you ask me. Oh and Pala pays their props the lowest hourly wage among all casinos and card-rooms in California that employee props, so that mixed with all the "Cons" I listed made it a pretty fast and easy decision to take the Oceans job. All that being said, I do wish George and everyone at Pala Poker the absolute best!
