Simkha Blank is a poker player and live reporter who recently wrote a memoir about being bipolar. You can check it out here; hope it’s helpful.

Nice thread. Reading through all the posts reminds me that no one with mental illness is alone. We can find strength in each other and in compassionate family and friends.

Poker has really helped me personally find some semblance of normalcy in life after things started going terribly wrong (for me, first/only event was relatively later in life at 28). It is now a supplement to my income and a wonderful confidence booster.

I agree with others who commented that poker can be dangerous for those who are still symptomatic. But as long as going broke won't ruin your life and playing gives you some way to pass the time an enjoy/forget about your illness, by all means go for it. If you find that poker is exacerbating things, maybe try something else.

Always here for support for anyone who needs it. Just PM me.

Gl all!

you guys could give it a try, what I discribed in that post:
https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/s...&postcount=510

I needed prob 1,5 years to get fully recovered and now I can say that I am healed from my bipolar disorder, atleast I am sure about it, as long as I stay away from wheat/gluten.

hey, I'm curious. How old are you? How long have you been experiencing symptoms? Any drug use? How long have you been symptom free? Feel free to pm me if you don't want to share over the thread.

Yeah, turns out English muffins are the root cause of debilitating mental illness.

What a breakthrough. :/

I think many things cause mental illness. For me, I highly doubt it's wheat. But for others, it very well may be the case if it's not that bad a form of it. I had childhood sexual issues as well as many concussions during my teens and drug use and a history of it runs in my family, so for me it's probably not the case. But you never know with others who have a mild form of mental illness.

Sorry for my late respond..

I've had Psoriasis as a reaction to high stress and can be a responds of your body to psychological problems, no sleep and bad nutrition+ lack of vitamin d. Its also a reaction to ****ed up gut and a weak imunsystem. Also its often caused by medicaments + inflammation (bad nutrition, -sugar, -bad fats, in most cases milk products+gluten -->causes gut damage too most people and leads therfore to high reactions.

Avoid:
-Sugar
-Wheat/ Gluten: literally all cereals unless there gluten free. (e.g gluten free oat flakes , buckwheat, Amaranth, millet, Quinoa)
-bad fats (transfats etc.) : fast food, chips etc
-milk
-literally all products which are industrial made (in most cases there just ****ing bad!! - they use bad sugar, bad fat, bad salt and all the other ****ed up ingredients= junk food ( sapidity agents, preservatives or artificial colors etc...)
-soft drinks/Alcohol/Drugs etc.

Do eat (atleast 2/3 of your food income should come from this listed:
-Good Fats (good oils= coconut oil, linseed oil ,hempoil etc, semen and nuts are nuts (walnuts= max ev for your brain.)
-Vegetables and Fruits (biological grown directly from farmers you know if possible) - Smoothies* are nuts!
-wild herbs (*add them)

Thats the most important things to mention. I can't list full nutrion for you, because its depending on a lot of things, also having problems to name the foods^^ (I'm not a english native, so I have to use a translater for most foods because I just dont how they are called...
but I hope this helps you as a mini guide.

As General rule:
Drink 3l water a day! 0,5l directly after long sleep and later in the day 0,2-04l a hour. (if you do sport, than 5l) Studies over students show between drinking 1,7 and 2,7l a day over some weeks leads to a difference of 7 IQ points+and otherthings. (focus, motivation, thinking etc.)

Vitamin D is really ****in important for your health. (if your are not able to get 1,5h sun every day than you have to supplement it. (4k ie/day is standard for an adult.)

3-4 hours sport/movement a week. ( doesnt mean you have to be bodybuilder or somehting like that, just regular smooth steady movements for your body is very important for your physical and mental health.

Good sleep= deep sleep at night. (rule of thumb is: 1hour sleep at night is as effective as 2hours on the day.) Best hours are the hours before midnight.

I don't know about diet (although I have been going vegetarian now and then recently and avoid alcohol and "junk food"), but I do know that maintaining a normal sleep schedule and getting plenty of rest is extremely important for me personally.

Got back from a day trip to NYC a few days ago and because of my poker schedule I got very little sleep the night before I took the train up there. Combined with the stress of giving a presentation in front of a bunch of big law attorneys, I ended up becoming quite depressed for a few days. Still feeling it now, but hopefully it will pass soon enough by sticking with my routine (sleep, moderate exercise, etc.).

Also, lately I decided to tell a couple old friends/acquaintances about my condition and their reaction was not exactly what I expected. One asked if he was bipolar because he is moody and gets angry easily. The other, while acknowledging that what I went through must have been stressful, then asked me if I had ever used drugs. :/ That may have something to do with my latest depression too.
