Alas, since my previous post we’ve had a resurgence and a return of ‘higher’ stakes with 5/10/25 running the past 3 nights.

Monday - LOST £2600

Monday brought about the return of a long time legend and badman in Doctor Schwartz to the room and naturally this coincided with the stakes being bumped a little. Luke is a big character and an enormous presence in a poker room. In many ways he’s clearly born to be a poker player and he has an uncanny knack of making the games go the way he prefers, whether this means loosening up usually tight players, or getting people to play a little bigger than they usually would etc he’s very good at generating action around the room and should be commended for it as it usually makes for better games in general. Sadly for me Monday brought about some real burn out and I started to feel the effects mentally of having played for the past 9 nights. I never really settled into a groove and just started to splash around after a while. At the worst I got AK85 in pre vs a reg AA and was fortunate enough to find a chop and at my best I was just pushing some marginal spots that I didn’t need to go after and ran into some peculiar lines that knocked me for six.

Tuesday I dusted myself off in the daytime, played footy with the lads and could feel the positive effects of moving the body and crunching some hard exercise. I was far better focused in the evening and played really solid throughout the whole night. I decided to buy in short, due to my seat and my perception of the game and how I thought it’d play out. I lost a big pot 3way with 80% to be up a fair chunk and then was card dead for a lot of the night. Lost a couple off niggly pots here and there and ended up breaking almost completely even for the night. Was definitely the best session of live poker I’ve played for a long time though and made me pumped to maintain that level of focus in future sessions.

Last night was a great game, loads of fun players and a ton of action with the stacks flying. I won a very big pot where I’ve 3b JJ97hhcc and peeled a 4 for 1.6 pre with like 5k effective back and found a gin J85r flop….ping. Won both run outs vs AAQ9 and then just played super solid for the rest of the night. The game was really wild with one particular guy going crazy and reloading a ton and 2 Finnish players, who I assumed both were regs (well one I knew from Stars battling back in the day) as they kept talking about how they’re having dinner with LarzLuzak tonight in London and they seemed very excited about it, it was all very cute. These guys were super drunk and they made the game a fun atmosphere which is something that certainly been missing from most London games this year.

Prior to me peeling that 4b with the JJ97 I had been reading a few passages from the bible that CHUFTY has been bringing in….divine intervention? After I won that big pot everyone started chucking the bible back and forth in order to touch it and get some of that run good before we decided that for anyone actually religious in the joint this activity was probably deeply offensive and we felt it best to stop.


It’s Been Happening Forever, Should It Be Happening In 2018?

Be warned this isn’t new news but I think it’s worth addressing and I really enjoy the poster interaction in my blog so hopefully this will generate some discussion.

Bum-hunting isn’t anything new in poker, it’s happened forever of course and I’ve seen the very worst of it online and live during my spell as a professional, in many different card rooms and countries across the world. As I stated earlier there was a particularly fun ‘fun player’ in the game last night, he started off in the feeder and got moved to the main before me, as he gets moved to the main the usual procession happens where people shuffled round and the oldest of the old school pro’s ensured they’d be sat on his left. No biggie, this is annoying and poor form imo but it’s standard and to be expected. However, when this stuff happens my mind melts and I see the worst of the worst in the room. A very fun fun-player always attracts attention in a card room and I instantly noticed all the eyes on this guy. All the pigeons who relentlessly watch the tables every day looking across, hungry and desperate. It’s the part of our profession I hate the most probably just because I find it so sad. Anyway, eventually I get moved to the main game and this fun player does the fun thing and is relentlessly punting it off here there and everywhere around the table. Due to the impossibly strict rules in the casino here in London the player had trouble accessing the large amounts of money he was telling us he possessed and got into a situation where he was desperately trying to scrape together rebuys in any way he could. Eventually it looked like he’d be really struggling to rebuy and immediately 5/6 players just snap rack up in front of the guy and start to leave the game. I mean the guy has just been dusting for hours and he’s literally stood by the table watching these so called pro’s quit on the spot as it’s evident he’ll struggle to access more money. It’s disgusting etiquette and those pro’s should be ashamed of themselves, it’s shameful behaviour. Unsurprisingly the only guys who didn’t quit were the guys who hold a decent name in poker and gambling, myself Chufty o’dea (one of the nicest guys in poker imo) and these Finnish drunk regs. I know this is standard practice and probably worse in other parts of the world but it saddened me to see it happened this way in 2018. The guy actually did manage to get more money and was able to keep playing, perhaps why it’s prudent to keep playing for half an hour a retain a shred of dignity as a pro.

This guy was trying to give us his passport in order for someone to lend him money to keep playing, obviously this isn’t a great situation. As we were playing big one reg suggested everyone giving him a couple of hundred each in order to play on, unsurprisingly we all declined to do this, what would you guys done in this spot???

London scum regs strike again, I wonder why the games are dying and going private...hmmm

FWIW in that spot Your almost never getting the 1k back however you being better than him and almost everyone else in the game have to reason if you win more than 1k back in the time he plays to make it profitable.

Eurgh. Above everything else it's just so uncool. Don't these malakas care at all about the aesthetic?

Being Reflective in Manchester

- [ ] I squeezed in one more poker session on the Thursday, I believe it was the 10th or 11th night in a row that I had been grinding. I was able to walk out with another £2900 win and topped off a great week leaving myself +£11k on the month so far and setting sail for some good figures pre Vegas. The downside was that my body told me it was time to stop and rest Thursday night. Old physical symptoms of sweating, dizziness, weak legs and nausea returned and I eventually decided to exit early and take myself home. I felt a break from poker and a break from London was in order so first thing Friday morning I hopped on a train to Manchester. The grind, for me, will continue on Monday evening…

I had a few interesting takeaways from Thursday’s session, outside of just realising that I had grinded my ass into oblivion.

- [ ] This first situation was probably a first I’d experienced in the poker room and one that I think I was right to feel aggrieved about. I turned up late to the game and so I was looking for spots to ‘play over’ - playing over for those that don’t know is where you play over a vacant stack at the table (ie when someone has gone for a cigarette etc). It’s very common place and usually involves placing a box (plastic) over the vacant stack but certainly not always. I didn’t have a box so I just placed some large denomination chips on the table and everyone seemed fine until a fellow reg I’m usually pally with decided to say he wasn’t happy with it and that I should get a box. I told him he was being absurd and played a few hands whilst the vacant player was away but I could tell I’d upset this fellow reg, equally however I myself felt kinda annoyed that he’d tried to deny me playing over which essentially isn’t ever really done.
Later I get into the game and played my only large part of the night vs the same reg that wasn’t happy with my playing over without a box. Hand was very standard where he opened MP, I 3bet 9876hhss and he peeled and we proceeded to get it in on a 632hh flop after starting the hand with 2k effective stacks at 5/10/25. I got a favourable 6x 7x run out to make a house and it turned out he had flopped gin with 9754ddhh and I had got pretty lucky. Me and this reg usually go twice so his decision to go once this time was probably evenly split between flopping the absolute joint and the fact that he clearly pissed off with me for the playing over scenario. For my part you’d think I likely was thinking ‘haha take that…’ or something to that respect but I didn’t, to me it was a whatever hand and I’d just ran good in it, I also don’t mind going once or twice. What did happen after the hand thought was I was reflecting over whether I’d been out of line and whether my card room persona had been aggro enough to piss this guy off and warrant him into only going once.

I’d be the first to admit that I definitely have some sort of large persona in the card rooms in London. I do like to enter with a swagger, I like the be loud, at my worst I proclaim ‘Jesus has arrived’ when I approach the table. For the most part I always do it in good humour and assume others take it that way. I do like to exude confidence though, I think it works to my advantage and in turn I do think it makes me a target and I like having players want to come after me, or get me so to speak as I back myself to outplay them and bank on them being emotional leading towards them making mistakes.

I chatted to Sol about this and he said that he likes my confidence but thinks that I can be too critical of others within the game. I never really assumed this was how it was perceived but if he’s right that’d be something about my personality that I wouldn’t like. I like to keep the environment competitive but if I’m criticising others to the point they feel belittled then clearly I’m going a little too far.

As a result in future sessions I’ll be looking out for this negative behaviour and trying to stop it. For the meantime thought I’m enjoying not playing any cards whatsoever and enjoying the crisp Mancunian sunshine. See y’all on the felt on Monday.

I think to be fair Phil takes it really well when he gets needled too, so he's not like the hypocrites who dish it out but get real douchey when you throw it back. Still, not everyone views things the same, and what might be friendly banter for some might be seen as mind games for others.

Northern Escape

The past 3 days or so I was back in Manchester having a little break from poker and just seeing some family and friends up that way. It was great and definitely felt good to be doing nothing poker/work related and I returned to London feeling entirely recharged. It probably saved me $2100 not firing the PLO 6max too.

Everything seemed pretty quiet on the old live poker front yesterday, I checked the lists a bit but when I realised that nothing outside of 2/5 was going to go I decided to fire up some online poker and chose my old friend Stars. I was absolutely amazed that I didn’t recognise any of the names in the 2/5z pool and wondered what an earth was going on, then I realised I was trawling through the NL lobbies. Wp me. Unsurprisingly it was all the same faces, I was able to catch some heat and book a good day.

Wasn’t a great deal of interesting spots all day and when 5 of my 7 big winners are AA and the only stack I lost was with AA it was just one of those days where the RNG dished me good hands that held up.

It’s funny usually a good day like this online would get me buzzed about grinding out some stars for a while but in reality I felt kinda meh about online at the end of the day, I yearned for live poker so hopefully the games pick up again in London.

The Agony of the Bluff

Yesterday I played a lot of poker. I started the day firing in a big session of zoom and then after making a big purchase which I’ll allude to later I decided to go and try and put in a Vic session too. I’ll start with the Vic where I had to take a bluff on the chin, something I’m not used to and perhaps break down some errors in the hand.

Vic game was small again, last weeks bigger action seems to have been a passing blessing, much like the sunshine we were able to enjoy. The game was 2/5 but in reality 2/5/10 with everybody straddling and it was decent action. I chipped up and was winning a few bags after winning a few showdown pots and then I decided to go and get owned. The villain in the hand is someone I’ve only played with a few times but I know he thinks that a) he’s a player and b) he’s got a big ego (could easily be talking about myself here).

Hand History:

I decided to limp the AQJTss utg and it limps around to Villain in the BB who pots it to 50. I flat and one other does.

Flop: JT5hhc. Great flop, checks to me and I fire 75, which in reality was too small for this texture for sure. Folds back to Villain who peels one off.

Turn: JT53hhcc. Villain checks to me and I pot here given the amount of draws out there. Villain calls pretty quickly and I assume he’s picked up clubs.

River: JT534. So both fd’s miss and I get to the river with a decently strong part of my range. He checks and I decide that I want to be betting here at least some of the time given all the draws that have missed. Perhaps this is an error but if we’re ever going to have some bluffs we definitely want to be slightly widening our value range, so I bet £450; half pot.. To my surprise he woke up with a check raise to £1.2k and my initial thought was this is a live game, just fold. As my mate Moss said in his thread ‘you make a lot of money in live poker not calling rivers vs anyone but the top players’ (paraphrase). Something felt amiss though, value range for Villain was just so narrow and I was being presented a fairly enticing price. I was trying to decide whether he does this with A2xx, he should, again though this is live poker and I thought perhaps his only value hand here is 76xx. Anyway in the end it was the end of my session and I was a bit tired and I decided that we just didn’t have enough history and made a pained fold hoping it would be a good exploit. Unfortunately he triumphantly rolled over the AT97cc for some questionable flop play that had picked up nut clubs on the turn. Well played him, good heart and commitment but I think in reality it was a fairly textbook call to make for me and I have botched the river pretty hard.

Walked away from the game a £1200 winner nonetheless and had to be happy with that.

In other ’News’ I booked up for Las Vegas yesterday. Will be staying June 7th to July 5th. Plan is to grind 10/25 and 25/50 PLO Cash and a bunch of PLO mtts, bring a bracelet back to the UK. The only downside was me firing the $25k in my schedule and my high stakes backer deciding to veto it; I mean come on bruv just flick it in ya nit. Gonna see how the trip is going and how my sanity is going and if both are going well I’ll probably extend and fire Main Event at the end of the trip.

I’ll be mainly grinding cos Vegas expenses are a living joke but of course will be down to drink beer and watch World Cup so if any of you guys who read this are down for that hit me up whilst I’m out there…particularly you Gazzy, plenty of England games for us to watch, you’ll be loving that.

High Stakes @ The Victoria

Let’s start breaking down some live action.

Last night we had a juicy 5/10/25/50 game at the Victoria. Now before y’all book your flights and fire over here excitedly let me tell ya’s this is a pretty rare occurrence, albeit certainly a welcome one. I was finding pretty tough actually to adjust to a 4 blind game with differing stack sizes when I’ve been playing a lot of zoom, I think I potentially played too tight but there wasn’t many steal opportunities and with a lot of pots going multiway it felt prudent to just have the goods.

I played a bunch of ‘smaller’ more standard 40bb type stuff and only one big pot of note.

Was earlier in the session when the game was only 3 blinds @ 5/10/25. Very good reg and friends of mine opens utg for pot and the funnest of fun players who vpips 95% flats and I squeeze KK85ddcc from the SB and both call. 9 handed game it’s probably close pre but I think it’s better in general to have an aggressive SB strategy and my friend had been opening frequently enough to be wider than only AA at this point.

Flop 986dd. Flop that I’m going to be checking a ton after this squeeze and I go ahead and do and my friend goes ahead and pots for £1100 or so with £3k or so back, high vpip player now tanks for a while and folds what is likely a good hand (turned out to be bare 75xx) and I go ahead and check jam and make flush on both run outs to scoop a biggie.

After that it was hard to get much momentum without scoring a ton of hands, which I certainly wasn’t and I sort of bled from a high point of about +£9k to finish up £5600 and continue with a very strong month so far live wise.

Earlier in the day I cranked out a whopping 472 hands on Stars.

I’ve been in the gym running and doing some light weights everyday and although they say that exercise is meant to be good it seems to kill me and I feel awful, perhaps I’m dying or perhaps it’ll turn to feeling good soon. Hope it’s the latter.

Got a pretty busy Friday with plans in the nighttime and have a meeting for an exciting project in the afternoon so will likely be quiet on the poker front. Will probably squeeze out a little zoom action and depending on what time I’m home tonight I’ll play the 530 5card NL, ridiculous format, turbo though at least.

Sunday Funday

So I ended up playing a fairly busy Sunday after a few days off drinking, eating and chilling. I fired the 10k 6max, 2 shells at the 1k 6max Plo and the Milly, plus had some action elsewhere in some Sundays and basically bricked everything. I had a deep run in the Supersonic later on to try and save the tournament day but eventually busted 30th or something losing a flip. All in all quite a disastrous tournament day. I managed to get in some good 25/50 games, both 4 and 5 card and ended up covering the tournaments and making a few thousand $s on the day so wasn’t a truly awful Sunday.

The 10k

I just never managed to get anything going in this tournament, played really solid and disciplined in a ton of spots where I know I’ve made really nitty but correct folds. I got into a really big pot early in the tournament vs TheCleaner where I’ve had QT99cc on 954cc raised his flop leads and he’s called. Turn comes an ugly 3x (9543cc) and he’s absolutely bombed turn and I’ve flatted and folded to another big bet on a brick river. Standard hand and big one for the momentum as it made him chip leader at the time and plummeted me down the standings. I made one error I think where I’d bet AJT2hhcc, J clubs, on KQ9cxx and 4c turn. River came 5c and I’ve check called a big bet and been shown the AQT6cc. Was a really tough spot but I think given he has enough set and 2pair stuff that I should be betting small on the river and folding to a river raise. Scrapped around the best I could on a small stack for a long time and busted AJ99 to AJT9 with 56%.

The 1k

I was in this for 2 bullets and ran up a really big stack and was like top 10 with 200 to go. I ended up busting like 173rd which will give you an idea of the absolute blow up I managed to put into action. Most of the damage has come when I taken the absolute worst bluff candidate possible and bombed river with it vs the one and only HotMark and he’s found a good bluff catchers and made the correct call to vault up the standings. After that my head had gone a bit and I just lost some high variance spot with a T765ds to KKxx and that was all she wrote. Not my finest hour.

Probably gonna look at having a chilled week at the Vic just trying to snag some variance free monies (ok so there’s no such thing) but if there’s only 2/5 running I’ll be back knocking about the Stars street. Currently having a very strong month pre Vegas so hoping that’ll continue meaning I head there pumped up with maximum confidence.

Hitting the gym today as us players at the Vic have a grudge 6 a side match against the dealers there on Wednesday. Huge pride on the line so need to be in tip top shape.

Of all the things that you call questionable, you call a slamdunk squeeze questionable. Philly G's been 3betting these hands since he started RiO, and it's probably one of the few things he said that still holds true.

Must be nice when winning a few k is "wasn't truly awful".

Playing All Sorts

Since the last update I’ve been firing absolutely all sorts, tournaments, live cash, online cash, 4 cards, 5 cards, even the dreaded 6 cards.

Let’s break it down.

100/200 5card

Yesterday I fired 100/200 for a bit, unfortunately it’s harder to just pull 5card hand histories and friends have told me the phone images are quite bowl so I’ll just have to describe the action and the decision to play. Line up was a mixture across tables of myself, ActionFreak, Gavz, Ronny, Jeans and my boy Deldar dropping in and out. I think the games were likely running around Ronny and me and my backer decided that we could just shell 8k bullets at it and felt it’d be +ev. I didn’t really play any ‘interesting’ hands because well you’re not going to off 40bb very often. Peaked at about +17k but eventually lost a few hands towards end of session and won $5k. Was pretty fun to be playing so high again, definitely a significant buzz increase between 100/200 and say 25/50.

In between live games I’ve been playing a fair amount of volume at these stakes, trying to sit whenever it looks like the game with run. I was playing Deldar the other day and he summed up 5card pretty well; ‘A fun way to breakeven’. I had a big upswing and then a big downswing and ended up +15k or so from these games. Seems the EV vacuum that is Berri is back online so that’ll make the line ups considerably tougher and will have to game select a little harder when he’s in the mix.

Live Poker

I’ve played 3 live poker sessions since last post

15th - won £1950

Last night was the only really interesting and fun game. We played straight up 10/25 all night in a good line up. Action was pretty decent, few people tilting. I played one semi interesting pot towards the end.

£50 straddle was on, few limps and I’ve made in £300 with AhAK9dd. 3 callers.

Flop comes KJ2hh, I go ahead and bet because of my excellent blockers. I bet 650 into 1300, I dislike size here, think I should just go bigger and surprisingly get 2 callers. Stack sizes were a little weird and the turn comes down 4x. Goes check check and I decided to just try and take a showdown with my AA or will plan to utilise my Ah blocker if a heart comes. River comes down a 5x so KJ245 with the missed heart fd. Reg checks and now the recreational caller bets very small, £800, and I decide to make a super exploit raise to £2500, reg folds and the recreational insta folds which suggests he was likely bluffing. My read was that recreational, based on his passive style so far, wasn’t going to bluff river here but would have a bunch of blocker bet hands at this sizing. Combo wise obviously not many sets, 2pair etc make sense but this is live poker and ranges are outstandingly wide.

Life

Outside of poker we had a long awaited grudge 6 a side match in football on Wednesday.

We knew the team we were coming up against were going to be far superior in talent to us. I was captain of the side and I couldn’t fault the lads for their performance. We ended up playing 90mins straight on a big 6 a side pitch with no break for half time. It was hard work to say the least. For 75mins it was a super close game with everyone on our side putting their bodies on the line and we were losing 3-4. Unfortunately after they made it 3-5 and our heads went down, fatigue set in and we got dispatched after that. Gotta give a shout out to my boy FullFlush who put in one of the all time great GK performances (sorry Bena!). Even their boys were telling him at the end that it was a man of the match performance, showed so much passion and made an unbelievable amount of blocks and saves. We will likely rematch in a month or so, our boys have to go into training though.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Alas the SCOOPs, for the most part, has come and gone and for me it’s a relief. In short, it wasn’t a good SCOOPs at all. I think I suffered from a lack of preparation for this SCOOPs. I didn’t plan or schedule well enough and paid the price for having a sort of ‘ah I’ll just play whatever I feel like on the day’ attitude. I was too stubborn with firing entries, re-entries and so on. I had a few min cashes in big PLO stuff but all in all I dusted hard.

Sunday I fired several bullets at the hi/lo and played the main. I played awfully in the hi/lo and can’t really remember what happened in the main, I vaguely recall calling a rejam with AJo and being up against AK. The hi/lo was just a **** storm, it’s a game I’m not a specialist at and I that showed pot after pot. I was just pure dead money in the field. Annoyingly I had a run going in the 530 PLO and felt like I could potentially save the day through that but busted 16th with 14 paid when MITS decided to be MITS again me and got there with 30% just punting around. How that guy has money I’ll never know. That was the final nail in the coffin on what was a terrible Sunday.

Outside of the tournaments I lost $35k playing different cash games over the SCOOP period. Inexplicably I did $6-7k of it in 25/50 hi/lo 5card games, mindless game selection and fair punishment. I ran bad in some 50/100 5card stuff and then dusted at 25/50 5card too. Zoom as usual was a small saving grace, I completely destroy it but obviously the gains there only made a tiny dent into the larger cash game losses.

I was downbeat but not down and out. A decent night’s sleep Sunday and Monday left me feeling that I knew where I’d gone wrong and felt it was primarily in my preparation and mindset. I’m still confident for Vegas, I think I played better throughout the latter PLO events and felt I was hitting a solid tourney groove. Edge shouldn’t be an issue in these live PLO events, particularly the smaller ones which should be insanely soft. I’ll be working hard on conditioning and preparing properly for that tournament mindset, I may even get some mental game coaching just prior to going.

Live cash I’m always confident with, my results in that arena are fantastic. I will probably only being playing live now before Vegas to get as much practice in and to make sure I’m in the groove for when I arrive.

I wasn’t able to catch any 5card hands again but I played a lot of Zoom over the past few days also and had some really funky play vs me (probably by me too) and will delve into some of these hands:

In this hand I had a crazy villain and we were 200bb deep so I’ve decided to play a 3bet pot with ‘double suited trash’ against him. Depth of stack means we can widen our range here to go for max exploits vs particular villains. Obviously I flop fairly gin and size up slightly as opponent wasn’t folding many flops and was going to peel a lot. On the turn I expect villain should have a flush a huge % of the time and decide to size small to keep all the flushes coming along. When he raises it’s obviously pretty dream and we have an easy call down. His bluff hand has a J and no clubs so I think it’s a decent candidate, high variance play thought and should probably be attempted at a low %.

Sometimes people just want to try their hardest to win the pot. I think here again villain had crazy stats (albeit over tiny sample) and was an unknown. I blocked a 9 which is going to be somewhat relevant and I think villain probably raises a smaller size with 7x here as it’d be so nutted, 4b pot and bet/folding vs this crazy image felt a little exploitable and so I’ve rolled it in and ended up in best scenario possible.

Bit of a car crash from me here vs good reg. Pre is standard. I think flop is close, usually here we’d want to start going after the pot with 9x blocker but I felt this particular hand just had way too much equity to have to attack in such a way. Problem on turn is that I’ve allowed myself to deviate from the flop plan and thought process and inexplicably bet when I have a really comfortable check back. Good protection and good showdown. When villain check pots I decided to be stubborn and hang on and was unfairly rewarded with nut river. Bad hand all round from me.

How to analyse this, basically I make a turn and possibly flop mistake. Flop I don’t mind, should be checking here a bunch and have a nice hand to go ahead and check rip. Turn I think I’m probably too stubborn, original stabber was very aggro and an unknown, like a fish. I had a plan to just call down vs him, reg caller is a decent player though and I think he’s going to flat his nutted hands here as a result because it’s unlikely the first stabber has anything. I think calling with my hand, albeit close is probably just a bit too stubborn. River I decide that I’ll just go for a pure exploit jam as I’m basically only player who can have a house and I pretty much rep one really credibly and it worked (or I just had the best hand).

Bit of a car crash in all here. I think pre I could have avoided this by flatting, I don’t mind the 3! as me and CO were very deep but I think a limp UTG vs an unknown will include a lot of limp squeezes and I should be prepared for this. Pretty tough spot vs MDU. I think my hand is a reasonable bluff catcher given he shouldn’t have bigger sets much and I don’t block any of the bluff hands. Plan now is to take it pretty easy on the poker front for the next few weeks. Gonna put in a lot of study for sure and try and be as sharp as possible for Vegas. I’ll definitely stick in a little live volume for sure and hope to see some decent size action here in London.
