BigA -

Why don’t you play on the Chinese Apps?

Secondly, altho I used to hate hearing **** like this, just from reading your thread (it’s my favorite pgc btw, very well written and you’re an interesting guy) - as someone who has battled addiction my whole life and luckily came out on top - remember that addictions are extremely progressive. Your tendency to punt it off in the pit could yet morph into something else. The fact that you don’t actually like it makes it even more of a warning sign....I’m just saying. I think a concerted effort should be made to stay away from that completely. I had one degen punt that completely messed up my life, took away years of earnings, and at the time I was worth a lot and I had no idea I was close to capable of a thing. In retrospect I could see the buildup over years.

What you said about habits was spot on. Getting rid of or replacing that habit is the way forward.

/unwarranted advice. Great thread!

I think it is a problem that a lot of poker players face - given the amount of freedom it offers it can unfortunately generate a lot of bad habits that can be difficult to break out of. It is tough to motivate yourself to be productive in areas outside of poker when you don't have a good routine/ balance in place to allow this to happen. Have you thought about doing something part time at the same time as poker? The money you make from it might be pretty much incidental but I think you may enjoy the structure/ purpose side of things and getting better at something. It also might provide good networking opportunities if and when you decide to pursue something else.

The Most Pain I’d Ever Felt

Hello darkness my old friend...

Yesterday reminded me of how swingy and painful only Sunday’s can be. I only played two tourney’s and had excruciating bust outs from both. I played the warm up and the 2k. In the Warm Up I think we’d just cracked the top 100 when I had KK > AKo for a ton of chips to bust, that hurt. The main pain by far though was left for the 2k PLO, which I played from the very start. 6 hours 10mins later I was the stone bubble. It really did hurt because I think I played that tournament perfectly, was a top 20 stack from basically minute 1 to when I busted. However, I’m not a tournament specialist and perhaps made a great error at the end.

Blinds 6/12k. Infestus176 620k, Villain slightly covers. Bubble ramifications. BlancoNegro very short on 79k and then I think the next bunch of stacks had around 240k.

Folds to us SB. We limp AAKJhh. General strategy all tournament was limping SB. BB bumps it up to full pot 42k, and we 3b to 126k. BB calls. Flop T55hhx. Us 65k, BB 180k and we jam for like 490 total and bust to 9854.

Is this a huge tournament error? From a fundamental perspective it felt standard but I’d love some feedback for growth heading into future tournaments.

I’ll say this, at that moment, it really ****ing hurt. I’d shared some action with a buddy and we were both just sat in my living room speechless at the pain haha, of course ya have a sleep and wake up the next day and all is fine but that moment man, that’ll stick with me.

Highs and Lo’s

Vs the legend Gump

The rest of my day was mainly playing a variety of cash. I played a bunch of 25/50 and 50/100 5card hi/lo, which although I won a bit I will now put a bounty down; if anyone sees me playing high stakes hi/lo I’ll pay out $1k. I mean I think I was whaling so hard that Isildur apparently told a friend of mine (who’d swapped with me in the 2k) ‘Infestus, isn’t he a huge fish’ ….that hurts man.

I won like $6k playing 2/5zoom, busted the $1k hyper. Lost about $9k playing 3 tables of 25/50 5card PLO just hi, great games and one of my favourite fun regs back but was just running especially sour in all ins and left to concentrate on the tourney.

Think I ended the day like +$3k on the dot, so not too shabby. That tourney tho bro’s. True pain.

Plan for the week is to try and get some live games going and if not primarily play 2/5zoom where I am tearing it up. Would get a nice little graph going but PT4 not working on this new comp, something to do with ‘port error’ or something, database won’t load, anyone got any ideas, I’ll fire in beers as a thanks.

Serenity Now

Yesterday I didn’t play much online poker. I made just short of $2k playing zoom in the morning but had the bug for the calm and gentle grind of the live arena. There happened to be a £2/5/10 4-5-6card (in reality 6card only) and whilst this is a little bowl it’s capped at 7 players, shorter handed always nice, and as most will know the 5/6card games generally attract roflers.

Game was pretty good. I had one fairly big spot that I’ve actually butchered pretty hard so I’ll shame myself on here.

2/5/10 open from an active reg, the usual procession of calls and I decide to squeeze a triple suited KKQ543. I think in reality this is an error in itself. However, it’s triple suited kings in a low stakes live game and I don’t have much self control. We go 4 way to a flop which comes KQT with 3 bd fd’s for me. Friend of mine leads pot, which was about 700 playing like 2k. I decided to flat with the intention of having a reasonable turn call off whenever my fd hits, I got 3 of them init. However reasonable reg playing 5k now pots the flop and my friend calls off. I decided to get it in and given side pot implications this might be a little whale. Both kinda had bare AJxxxx so spot was actually pretty dreamy fortunately. We ran twice and I won one half to make reasonable profit on the hand.

After that I just hit cruise control and picked off a few spots, stacks got a little deeper and my red line got a little better and I was able to book a £4200 win.

Again the game struggled for legs though and the scene continues to falter and struggle in this current period. The villain from the AKTT hand I posted a while back was in the game. He continues to run poorly in spots vs me and that seems to dishearten him. He didn’t seem to be enjoying the game at all and whilst I tried to keep the atmosphere laid back and jovial I can’t help but think him and similar players won’t be in a rush to come back.

Chufty proclaimed that I was single handedly destroying the PLO scene at the Vic, and whilst he said it in jest and also whilst it’s certainly not true it doesn’t make great reading for my image and it stays in some players mind and makes them less likely to battle out games and start games etc.

Barcelona

Whilst the game happened yesterday me and another reg discussed our excitement to battle about the Party Poker grand final in Barcelona in a few weeks. I think given the struggles for action in London that Barca will be a great tonic to satisfy the live bug. Will be nice to perhaps meet some faces I’ve been battling on the online felt this past few months.

I’m a bit of a life donk so if anyone has any advice on a good spot to get a good rate on euro’s in London holla at me either here or via PM. Equally if anyone knows whether the best option is to just wire directly to the casino in Barca then I’d appreciate the advice.

PokerStars LOL

So there have been a few fun faces knocking around the highest 5card games on Stars lately and my backer for the big big games and I discussed it being worthwhile emailing Stars to have the stakes above 50/100 unrestricted.

I emailed Stars and to put it frankly my exchanges back and forth with them have been pretty ridiculous. Now I understand that Stars has an important responsibility to cover themselves when it comes to the nosebleeds but the way their support staff operate is borderline offensive.

Their first email noted that I was mainly a midstakes player, ok this is fair enough albeit I did point out to them that I doubt anyone had played more 25/50 5card action than me this year.

I self excluded from Stars for a year after the rake changes, like many players, I certainly wasn’t alone. The truth is the games have improved significantly and this year I’ve been back on this year due to lack of integrity or whatever on my part (ties belt to arm). The stars rep questioned me about this and was laughably dismissive when I stated I’d excluded because of their ‘poor business decisions’, to be honest he was damn right insulting.

He then led me through a lot of problem gambling questions, including whether I’d ever attempted to commit suicide because of gambling! Again I appreciate that there are formalities and protocols they must go through but the personal nature of the staff members tone was pretty off putting. I explained in my reply to him that I didn’t think he was a qualified therapist and that he shouldn’t be acting like one.

Needless to say those limits haven’t been unrestricted to me…..

Battle Royale

I’ve been playing 5card heads up vs reg for the past few weeks on and off and yesterday we were battling quite hard.

I was playing really strong in the match and felt like my river game was really on point. Made some sick river hero’s in some spots and was getting a lot of bluffs through. Was funny I was playing the match in my local coffee shop and didn’t realise I was probably just sat there for 3 hours with the time absolutely flying by, the staff presumedly wondering why this git was taking up a seat for that length of time whilst nursing one decaf Americano…

- [ ] At one point a group of French students who I guess loosely enjoyed poker created a mini rail behind me and I could tell they were trying to figure out what was going on and whether I was playing tournaments or for real money. Naturally I kinda hoped they figured it was tournaments so to lower my chances of being mugged outside.

I feel I had my opponent on the ropes for a lot of the match as signified in the chat here…

And here…

At one point I had 76% on turns to be up $40k and was cruising…I thought that perhaps the battling would come to and end

However, late on I was making some adjustments to how much villain was 3betting and chose this candidate as a 4b, which I think 270bb or whatever is ok but I actually tanked flop for a long time and really think I’ve made a bad error in stacking off. Think I needed like 32% and ended up with 22%, so a pretty enormous error to say the least and probably means that villain won’t be quitting me anytime soon…

I ended up about $10k in the match in the end but decided to quit after that big one, partly cos that’s a pain pot for 25/50 and also the day was starting to get away from me a little and decided that heading to the gym was a healthier pursuit of my time.

Author Note: I hope villain doesn’t mind me posting chat (in the unlikely event he reads this anyway) and if he does I’m happy to retract but I felt it works better for the storytelling purposes.

Das Grind

So after all those fun and games I hit the gym for a swim and steam and then went over to the Vic and grinded some £2/5NL briefly and then a really dour £2/5 PLO where combined I won a whopping £290 and called it a day. I got home and had to have a long hard look at myself in the mirror. I mean I’m all for respecting the grind and respecting the hourly, also it should be noted I didn’t head live with the vision to grind those limits, however going from extreme to the other probably isn’t healthy. I think it likely suggests a lack of balance in my life and I should be very careful as it leaves me on the cusp of being a real sad bastard.

After the Vic, which was a short grind to be fair, I returned and played really poor at 2/5zoom and probably dropped $1500, just being totally off my game, auto piloting and not respecting the spots. I fired some 25/50 6max as a full game ran and some a stack to end the day +14k.

I think I’m gonna start putting my buddy into some tournaments on Stars, he’s a great Hold’em player and I believe that these dailies on Stars are meant to be incredibly soft so it should be a reasonable investment.

- [ ] Will take it easy over the morning coffee this morning, no battling, yesterday was fun but being in the public environment under that intensity sparked a lot of anxiety and I could feel my mind and body paying for it as the day went on. As I kicked my feet up at the end of the day to enjoy a few beers I was exhausted mentally and physically.

Brilliancy

So I played Deldar for a short while yesterday morning and he gained the upper hand, I think I dropped $13.5k to him. He trapped me nicely in one spot where I’ve chosen a really poor bluff candidate and be rightly punished. Then he ended up on the right side of some coolers and held but he had the best hand each time and I felt a little off the boil and didn’t back my mental game to keep me at A game level so I booked the loss.

Authors note: One thing I admire about Deldar’s game in the period we’ve been playing is that his mental game seemed to be on point at all times, which is imperatively important during a heads up battle. I’m sure that’s probably because he’s already in RETIREMENT mode having the absolute lot, however it’s still very impressive.

Battled back in the afternoon with some solid zoom play and managed to win $5k in the 2/5 pool. Been on some really sick heat there lately.

Also my buddy who I fired into some tournament went and shipped the Hot $162 for $4.2k to get that deal off to a flyer. Stoked for him, great player and top result.

Went into play live and it was just awful again. Some lol soft but excruciating £2/5 PLO ran and I sat for 2 hours and won £590 and left, just didn’t have the heart for the grind.

Fired over to a friend’s house and had the best duck I’ve ever had so kudos to my man for his mad cooking skills. I used to think I was a damn good cook but I’ve had to concede the crown over to him after last night.

Bad Decisions

When I got in I found myself, quite drunkenly, sitting Flatcat and Veni at 50/100plo and 25/50plo. Both 5card naturally but still. A good friend reminded me that this probably wouldn’t be the most prudent of professional decision and I scraped out of there about even after swinging a few bags either side.

*Certainly wasn’t the worst or most embarrassing drunken decision I made that evening.

Barca Can’t Come Soon Enough

I’ve been struggling mentally in London lately, like finding it really tough. I’ve been over grinding for sure, I mean a fellow zoom grinder who sometimes plays Vic even asked me the other day ‘do you ever take a break?’.

The truth is I’ve sort of been trying to grind through the pain a lot lately. It certainly helps that results wise I’ve been on the tear of all tears and I think my A game is definitely prominent in almost all my sessions lately. Money in the bank helps but it hasn’t been addressing deeper issues.

I’ve been struggling with depression this year a lot. I think the break up obviously didn’t help in this respect albeit it appears it was for the best for both parties. I’m sort of stuck in a rut though and I guess at 30 this happens. I’m dedicated to my craft but I’m not entirely satisfied within my ‘job’. My life is lacking balance and I’m aware of that but the depression makes it incredibly hard to get up and change it.

I’m back in Manchester this weekend for Easter and I hope that seeing some old friends and the family, of course, reignites a little happiness and that I can return to London with a new sense of perspective. Perhaps I should have taken a room in the grind house @GazzyB suggested in his blog, to have some companionship during the series, which is often extremely underrated, but I figured ‘PLO rofler’ didn’t really fit in with the ‘Holdem Crusher’ vibe I’m sure they’re gunning for.

I think getting out to Barca will help, albeit it’ll be heavily poker orientated. I have a lot of friends heading there from all different parts of the world and at the least there should be some good nights out and the weather should be good so I can catch some much needed vitamin D.

Lost For Words

Firstly, apologies for the lack of posts for the past few days. Like most PGC guys this coincided with getting bashed lately but it was also very coincidental. I have been back in my homeland, Manchester, as is traditional in the UK, I had returned home to see friends and family over Easter.

So the back end of last week saw me continue to battle Deldar where I think I lost back like $30k to him, perhaps just south of there but there and there abouts. We played one really cool hand, or at least I thought so, towards the end of our session..

I don’t want to delve too deeply into strategy as a) I’ll be embarrassing myself and the great game and b) it’s unlikely to be worthwhile. Basically though I like to think I’m balanced enough to have some hits on this board texture and as a general play however I’m going to check this board to Deldar a lot. Flop I check called which was perhaps overly ambitious against a great player like David but I think we have enough bd draws and enough balanced c/c’s that perhaps it’s not awful, in simple terms however I’m out of position and have the worst hand nearly always against very competent opponent. Turn is similar, much better for our range but we have to be weary when he fires again, which he did, as it represents a ton of strength. Obviously we’ve upgraded our immediate hand strength and deldar fires turns a ton so I decided to cling on, I actually don’t think this is a bad hand to go ahead and check pot as a bluff now. River comes down and I basically don’t block diamonds, but don’t think he’s out and out bluffing, think he’s obviously betting all sets as he’s good value bettor and I don’t think he bets that many low wraps on turn because even though he has a high turn bet frequency I think he expects me to have a lot of check raises on the turn that’ll put those low wrap combos in a really gross spot. I think I can have some low wrap and fd stuff and a bunch of random draws that’ll definitely check here. Anyway I check rip it and albeit he was calling off 4.8 into 15 or whatever he tanked down a lot before calling off with his hand so I think if he’s thinking with that it can’t be worst river bluff ever.

I think I’ll quit Deldar for now. I think if I can operate at A game then I perhaps can have an edge on him and most at HU 5card, this could be hubristic and wrong however, but I have an A game that runs down to a F game and you can’t battle boss men with that going on. Deldar I think has an admirable mental game and will be operating at B+ all the time. I’d guess over the weeks we probably ended up around even, he might have won small but it was fun to battle and was a good learning experience.

I played a small amount of zoom in March and ran pretty good, played fairly solid most days and booked a good win over tiny volume.

Live I didn’t really get to play a whole lot throughout March, games and the scene in London have been insanely dead and it’s really looking likely that it’ll be time for me to move on from London to new pastures. Was able to put up a reasonable month but having to dig out action hard and it’s kind of a bad life just sitting around a horrible casino waiting for something to kick off.

Solid month man enjoy this thread keep it up! Also why not just print screen instead of taking pics with phone?

Ugly spot vs decent reg, not sure I hate myself for it but I certainly don’t like it.

Man looking through some of these losers I really butchered some, I really suck.

With there being little to no action at the Vic I seemed resigned to sitting in and just grinding online, either zoom or party, which whilst fine doesn’t really suit my personality much so I’ll see how I go, could get too lonely/bored.

Other than that just waiting for Barca really. Was all set to play the main but a few friends have been putting me off it lately, the re-entries being unlimited allowing for beasts to just keep shelling it at deep stacks does destroy a lot of the appeal and I’m not good/rich or backed enough to do the same. I might just go out a little earlier due to earlier discussed boredom and grind the cash and if I’m printing balls I will likely fire a shell at it.

Possibly the Worst Day of Poker I’ve Ever Played

So yesterday just ended up being one of those days, (that the good pro’s never have but the mediocre pro’s have way too often), nothing clicked, I never really found a groove and I just spewed hard start to finish. In all honesty I deserved to get absolutely dead and buried and it was only the fact that Omaha is such an amazingly stupid game that saved me in many ways (saved me to a degree, still got pummelled for small).

Below will be a selection of shame hands where I will be shaming how poorly I can truly play, it won’t be pretty but perhaps on some level it’ll can be cathartic and I can use them for growth. Alas, the hands….

Vs my favourite 2p2 poster of all time, lord only knows what he’d have to say about this…sorry sensei..

I guess I’ll leave it at that, there were about 50 that could have made the highlight reel, all as terrible as the last. Was just a who’s who of absolute shockers.

Unsurprisingly that level of poor play and probably the mental anguish it was causing me led to me having a bit of an old school wobble at the end of the day. I wasn’t overly concerned and assume it was just my bodies way of telling me I’d been overly on edge throughout the day but wasn’t entirely pleasant.

I did knock into the Vic for a little while in the evening and watched the footy. I was actually only in there to collect some euro’s for Barca and never intended to play so I was relieved that as usual no 5/10 or higher got up, albeit it saddens me to see what’s currently happening there.

Plan for today is mainly gym, chill and then go out to watch the city/liverpool game in some pub, super excited, I think Liverpool at Anfield are the one side that has the tonic to give city a good game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them run City close.
