My thought process:

"Lion would be cool. But, oh, wait. Dinosaur, LDO. But what kind of dinosaur? Something that would actually be like me? Or ideally? T-Rex comes to mind first, but I'm closer to a Stegosaur than a T-Rex, probably. But man, sex would be really tough. I could say 'Stegosaur because I love making sex totally difficult.'"

Then I thought, "porcupines are BDSM by nature." That would make a good one-line Hedberg joke...if he thought his crowd knew what BDSM was. They probably wouldn't though. H'awright.

Pure pwnage vs the Asian kid in hand 3. Good job! If you're checking the turn bc you expect him to float flop a lot I'd be ck/snapping this river to pretty much any sizing.

Make sure you include some hands you butcher to keep the flametards happy

Subbed, good luck snowball!

As a purely once-a-week rec player myself, I think it really is important to balance your life appropriately. Having a full time job that safely pays all the bills is the nuts, and leaving poker as a hobby (one of hopefully a few that you have) is the way to go, of course making sure to leave lots of room/time for everything else in your life.

Hi Snowball.

What do you think of people who have cats in their avatars?

And how do you feel about playing poker in a suit? What about in a party outfit?

And yes, I'm going to incessantly troll your thread.

Yeah after the hand i remembered that hes been floating the flop a lot. Funny how i didnt remember it explicitly during the hand but somehow i subconsciously processed it and knew checking was the right thing to do.

Butchered hands coming soon, but dont hold your breath

Each room kind of have its own shortcomings but on a balance I'd say it has to be a room in vegas, and probably venetian. Aria has better waitresses and drinks, but venetian has the best dealers and floor I've seen anywhere and at the end of the day that's what really matters.

Cartoon cats are cool. Picture of real cats on the other hand just screams cat lady.

As for outfits, I'm loving those party outfits but will have to get back to you regarding suits.

Troll away give your best shot.

Quick life goal update:

Been doing great so far. Still in the process of setting up my new apartment and just signed up at the gym. Also finally got back to cooking my own food after traveling for the last two months so should ve living a lot healthier. Going out with non-poker friends this weekend also so check marks for a balanced lifestyle all around. The only set back is that I'm trading a bit of sleep for doing more of everything else and it's kind of affecting poker as it's hard to be focused all the time.

Will have some more poker updates later.

My first low-level strat post! (Certain subscribers can skip this )

The importance of having a balanced opening range and sizing is really important when there are players who pay attention on the table (I wont go as far as to call myself "good" lol). This is a very simple and straight forward example from a recent hand (2/5 nlhe):

I have JJ in the sb. Reg lady opens for 35 utg. We both have about $600. She gets like 3 callers and then a short stack shoves for about $250 from the button. I fold just after a few seconds. As expected she shoves over top and shows QQ holding against AK.

A great amount of time I expect to be good against the button shove, and with all the money in the pot it's a great call. BUT Ive been paying attention to UTG's raise sizing and position, and while she's not a nit, it's an easy fold in this spot when she is still left to act.

However if we switched spots and now someone else had the jacks in the sb instead. With my opening range, sizing, and position being pretty balanced, there is a good chance that they would think (and be right) that their jacks are the best hand here and call/raise, and in return I can play my hand correctly. Basically, balancing your range forces worse players to make mistakes.

However having a balanced opening sizing is not as important when you are value raising stations whose logic is usually "i know im behind but I can catch up". In those cases I can open from 1 limp in late position to 8x not because I'm afraid of getting cracked, but i know they are calling any and folding the flop 90% of the time.

Good thread, I'll be following along since I'm doing the same thing, except now I get to play online in NJ! The previous two years I played live in Atlantic City while working an office job 50+ hours per week. It's tough to get in volume for sure. Good read through now

Sub'd. It's nice that you get the option of playing online at home. I enjoy live a lot more but traveling adds up to so much time. AC's great, Ive been there once and played at the Borgata. Loved the beach. Did you move and playing live became unfeasible?

So after over a month of being card dead and literally not flopping a single set, Ive finally got some HHpron for you guys (yeah did I just coin that?). There wasnt a ton of money involved but def feels good to be shoving chips in with the nuts.

Second hand needs to be viewed in the context of this first hand:

1). H has ATss utg+2, opens for 20. V in sb calls - old guy whos kind of on tilt from making bad calls down from 1k to 400ish. Eff 450
Flop ($47): Q37ss. V checks, H bets 30, V c/r to 100. H ships a/i for 400 total. V folds KQhh.

2). 55 otb. Few limps. I limp otb. Guy in bb raises to 17. Same old guy calls, i call. Eff 250 3 way.
Flop ($60): A57r. Check check. H bets $25. Old guy calls. (Eff now ~$530)
Turn ($110): 3 flush draw. V checks, H bets 55, V min raises to 100. H calls.
River ($310): 3o. V leads out 100. H shoves 500 total (putting him a/i). V calls with ATss.

It's nice when hands happen in that order and they just call off when I have shown no bluffs in my river shove range. (Or bluffs at all for that matter)

Also these from another recent session (they are pretty brief because I had little time to write them out but you get the gist)

3). H cbets pocket 3s HU on A58 flop. V checkcalls. Turn paired up the 8, H checks behind. Rivered 3. V lead out for pot (80 into 78) i shove for 300 more, he calls with J8s.

4). H raises KJs otb. 2 calls. I flop the nuts on monotone A-hi. I bet half pot, omc check call. Turn blank I bet 100 into 176. Omc check call again. River I pray for no paired up board and it bricks, omc leads out 150 into 376. I shove for about 400 more and he calls with AKo.

I forgot what it felt like to win big pots like these so this was really awesome. The message for you guys out there feeling frustrated about being card dead in a session is just keep on playing your best and it will all turn around!

Haha I def got some of those saved up. Will be posting them. There hasnt been anything too tricky though because the players play pretty straight forward here. I'll start putting results in spoilers maybe so it'll be more interesting that way lol

You meant aq and not ak right? Yup but I wouldve played aa/kk or a set (and probably aq) the same way too and I guess he got scared money.

Okay here are some questionable/butchered hands to keep andees10 & co happy any feedback or comments are greatly appreciated.

1) A7ss utg+2. Eff 500. V older asian man (new players, few hands earlier with A5ss) limps utg. H raises 25 in MP. Fold around V calls.
Flop ($57): AQ6hh. V checks, H bets $35. V calls.
Turn ($127): AQ6hh Qo. V checks, H checks.
River ($127): AQ6Q6o. V leads out $75.

Spoiler:
H tank folds. V claims he had KJ and showed it to the person next to him. Argh one time I didnt station and I shouldve. This is such an obvious call spot. Somehow I thought it would be a bad call because I also lose to most Ax.

2) ATss in CO. Eff $650. V is spewy guy who bluffs a lot and lost over a k within 30 min playing way too aggro. Huge sizing tell - weak bets are bluffs. V limps in HJ. H raises to 20, folds around and V snap 3 bets to 55. H calls 35.

Flop ($115): K57r (backdoor flush possible). V bets $50. H calls.
Turn ($215): Th (flush draw). V bets $50. H calls.
River ($315): Qh (3 to flush). V bets $100.

Spoiler:
H calls. V shows 58ss mhig.

3) this feels kinda spewy to me afterwards.
A6ss in utg +2. H hasnt been too aggressive post flop. V1 from previous hand limps. 4 nits behind H. H raises to $20 ($650). Bad reg V2 calls otb ($370). Sb omc V3 calls (cover).
Flop ($80): KT6hh. All check. (Little worried about omc as he loves to C/R flops after he calls a pf raise)
Turn ($80): 3o. V3 omc checks. V1 bets $25. I raise to 75. V2 snap cold calls. V3 folds and V1 snap folds.
River ($255): 8o. H bets 175. V folds

4).
AQo in bb. Eff 580. Lagtard raises utg 25. Tilted young asian reg (who has been getting in pots with the lagtard and raise/folding losing 600 in the past orbit) calls from sb. H 3bets to 85. Both call.
Flop: Q47r (255) - V1 checks. H cbets $150. V2 calls and V1 calls.
Turn: Q477 ($705 flush draw) - check, check, check.
River: Ko ($705) - V1 sb bet $350

Spoiler:
H call (ai), V2 folds.
V1 shows 57ss
This is just WOAT and I was super displeased with the call in that spot. Urghh

I think my biggest leak is just playing tired and not seeing things clearly when they become super obvious afterwards (and not in a hindsight is perfect kind of way either)
