Hello fellow grinders!
I play poker part time in the winter (I live in the northeast US) when I'm slow at work. Generally I just play January and February for roughly 20 hours/week for fun, but I'm tired of the rat race. I only make $25,000 (net)/year, and I work my ass off. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm completely grateful for everything in my life. My gf, her kids, my family, my health, my job, etc. I understand there are so many less fortunate people out there than myself. That being said, I do want to change my situation, and I'm going to! I'm only 30, and I'm in a determined mindset to morph my life into something I can really enjoy, and can consider "free". Poker is not going to be the sole vehicle I try to ride into the sunset. I like to do many other things. I currently have some short term investments that will (hopefully) be realized in the next twelve months. I'm also getting into many other projects. This is one reason why I need a new lifestyle. Work (physical labor) is so tiring and time-consuming. While it's a rewarding job, this is (probably) my one life, and I want my dream future to fructify. I crave balance. 3 days a week at my job, 4 days a week poker, and more time/energy to do all my other projects. Roll is currently $1,000.
The plan????
I'm going to build my roll from now until January and then really grind hard. I will be playing tournaments three days a week (4 if I have some extra free time here and there) until I'm slow at work, and then transition to cash. Cash play is not new to me, so have no worries! I will also be dedicating time every week to studying for the cash transition. I know, I know, "LOL DONKAMENTS", but, I do enjoy them! Once I transition to cash in the winter, I want to play for 20-30 hours/week (4 days) and only go back to my job for 3 days/week. I will also keep investing any sort of excess poker profits or income, and work towards monetizing my other projects.
The goals???
-Goal 1:
Bring the roll to $4,000 by January and jump into 100NL. Start out making a minimum of 2bb/100 10 tabling. I will shot take if I have $2500-3000 giving myself a 5-10BI cushion before dropping to 50NL. Play a minimum of 20,000 hands/week cash.
-Goal 2:
Study, study, study! Fix those leaks and try as hard as you possibly can to better yourself. Get your winrate up to 5bb/100!
-Goal 3:
The standard...build the roll, keep getting better, and move up stakes. I would like to be a winning 200NL reg before end of 2019, making at least 3bb/100 in said games. I would also like to win a Sunday Major in 2019.
Non-poker goals???
-Keep bettering myself:
Be a sponge and absorb as much information as possible that will impact my life positively. Stick to the rule of 1% - incremental changes; try and be 1% better today than you were yesterday.
-Get in good shape:
I definitely have a dad bod, although my diet is pretty on point compared to most. I would like to get into a workout routine as work slows down.
-Meditate daily for 5 minutes minimum:
Something that I need to stick with, as I currently only do it sporadically.
-Get out more:
My GF does the same physical labor job as me. We get home at 5:30 pm after working all day, and then have to make dinner, shower, walk dogs, help kids with schoolwork, etc. We generally use weekends (well, when we aren't working) to catch up on errands and what not. I want us to go out hiking and doing way more activities more often. Seeing more the world has to offer.
I guess that's it for now guys! I did a bunch of chores this morning like mowing the yard, etc. Now I'm going to jump on the trampoline with my GF's son, and then make some lunch. Probably going to have a bowl of quinoa topped with roasted chickpeas, arugula, red pepper, tomato and avocado! Then going to read some of my current book (which is excellent by the way), "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself" by Dr. Joe Dispenza. Great book if you want to understand how you're neurologically hardwired to your habits. After that, it will be time to do a Sunday afternoon tourny session!
Good luck to all those on the grind, and let's all keep our minds set on improving as a person every single day! I hope to look back at this in August of 2019, and think, "Wow. I've come so far in such a short period of time".
