I try to find balance and do stuff that I think is reasonable, like having solid checking ranges rather than go super thin.
But when I see a chance to take someone down, I take it.
The goal in poker isn't to play as close to gto as possible, but to make the most money off people as possible.
Just as an example, flatting JJ from the BB is a terrible play, but vs someone opening only 99+ and AQ from UTG, isn't it the best play? I do my best to use GTO lines, like range checking when the board became really strong for villain, I use standard cbet sizings for each texture vs regs, but vs a fish, what's the point of betting 33% with your set if you can make it 110% and go for stacks OTR?
The mentality of going full explo is very dangerous, since we end up going super nuts with a super inconsistent game, like explo folding better hands and calling worse hands, but that focus on GTO has its problems too. Just as an example MMAsherdog gave: he saw Eccentric limping from the BTN with a tight fish in the blinds that was overfolding to steals. What's the point of playing GTO for the sake of being GTO?
The best thing is to use both, not overvalue or undervalue any of those.
