Wellllll

The other night, ran deep in the $16.50 PKO. Was CL with three tables left and stayed up wayyyy too late, but figured it was going to be worth it when I shipped it. Unfortunately, I busted 10th on the FT Bubble.

While that was a tad deflating, I woke up the next day and still felt like grinding. Admittedly that enthusiasm was dampened a bit by the recent results but once I got the tables up, those were in the past and I was ready to build stacks.

Shipped the $55 6-Max Hyper PKO for $2.8k
4th in the $16.50 Bounty Builder for $1.2k
3rd in the $215 Bounty Builder for $5.7k

Hard to complain about that, altho if you asked me I could certainly think of a few particular spots that didn't go amazingly well. That said, ended up making close to $11k for the day and got myself out of the week-long downswing.

Even ACR is doing a $1million GTD tournament now it's clear sites are v interested in the PR leveraged by good MTT offerings.
ACR's new schedule looks fantastic, definitely want to add in some of the games to my normal grind. Really hoping that these other sites can get their **** together and perhaps then PokerStars will be less likely to hold its customers over a barrel. Most of the changes Stars has made in the last two years have simply been because they could and the community didn't have much else in terms of options, but slowly and surely it appears to be changing.

Better hurry, I'm only in CM until the end of January and then I'm spending February in Bangkok.

Thanks!

I'm supposed to take an off-day at some point, right? Didn't want to do that when I was in a downswing and thought that when I finally had a decent day, I'd be more willing to spend the next one doing something other than clicking buttons on the internet.

That was the plan for today -- I busted my last game at 7 AM and immediately headed to Chiang Mai's Promenada Mall/Immigration Office to get my my visa extended. Was in/out of there in under an hour, which is rather amazing considering I've never had it take less than three hours before.

So I might still click some buttons tonight, starting with the $215 Builder in ~2 hours but first, I'm off to the gym and then I'm going to crush a huge meal at Salsa Kitchen, hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Chiang Mai.

Yeah, so since the cat is out of the bag, seems like a decent time for a mid-month update.

Clearly, I've been grinding a lot. Because that's what I do.

Was somewhat afraid of burning out, but so far I feel fine. I'm thoroughly enjoying the process, learning about the regs, leak finding, etc and still am able to have somewhat of a life off the felt. I don't think I can (or want to) keep up this pace forever, but I don't need to -- My goal was 1000 MTTs a month, and I've already eclipsed that in two weeks.

I'm really excited to read you on this MTTs adventure and hope most of your leak finding gets reflected on stable coaching as well. Also really interested on your thoughts regarding lifestyle too.
I'm gonna try to make 10k games this year (I'm actually looking for more but just in case 2018: Tasty Food/Trip Reports/Tournaments ) so I hope this thread will give me some confidence to achieve it.

Yup, obviously I'll pass along what I pick up from the games.

One early thing that I've figured out -- Most regulars have abysmal game selection. And it's not confined to the mid/high stakes stuff, there are some smaller buy-in games that seem to be 90% regs and guys fire it because it's "just low stakes."

Thanks but uhhh, it's become less impressive since my last post.

Played almost exclusively peak, mostly large fields, and a lot of stuff >$80. That's a recipe for some variance and the higher stuff makes up 90% of my losses. Have been rather close in a lot of stuff and I'm confident that I'll break out of it soon enough. Not going to whine about runbad because after some real life events in the past few days, losing a couple thousand at the pokers is super unimportant.

Health stuff (tl;dr)

Spoiler:
So on Saturday morning, I woke up with a bit of soreness in my neck and didn't think much of it. Had a coffee, started grinding, and then I felt some pain in my chest. Chalked it up to indigestion because I had eaten a massive burrito the night before and immediately slept afterward. Took an antacid, expected the pain to go away, but it didn't. Realized the pain was concentrated on the left side, around my heart, and that I couldn't take a deep breath without feeling pain/pressure in my chest. At that point I decided to cut the grind short and stopped regging, unfortunately I had a stack in the $33 Builder and 1-tabled it from my bed as my symptoms worsened. Immediately after busting, I took myself to the hospital.

One of the nurses ran some sort of ECG/EKG test and I knew that something was wrong when her and two other nurses approached me with a wheelchair. They took me to the Emergency Department, ran more tests, and I was diagnosed with pericarditis (Inflammation around the heart), which was a result of the viral infection I had a few weeks prior. I immediately Googled it after the cardiologist told me and since treatment was going to be a steady diet of ibuprofen, I assumed I could go home. Nope. They kept me overnight because, as the cardiologist said

"Need to monitor you. Some people get better, some people die."

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm, ok, I'll stay.

Was released the following morning, all my vitals are great, and the chest pains have lessened as time has passed/I continue to take the meds. It was definitely somewhat unsettling to have a 'heart issue' considering my age and activity/fitness level, but I suppose it's inflammation around the heart and not the heart itself, which is good. Still, kinda scary. Supposed to take it easy and avoid getting my heart rate up too high (I can't go to the gym for a few more days), but I've still been grinding. Trying to keep table count low and not get too hyped/frustrated with the swings, but I think every reg should know that one terrible beat could kill me. So stop it.

Real talk tho, that experience definitely puts the downswing in perspective. I'm happy to be healthy and if I don't make as much $$ as I wanted to this month, it's not the end of the world. There will be other months and money isn't everything. That said, I'm still gonna try to finish January strong and crush volume the final few days. If I can bink some stuff, that'd be fine too.

That is a scary location to have an inflammation... Get well soon (in the head too). Guess the downswing didn't help in "relaxing" the heart (although a huge upswing would have been equally bad?)... then again, a flat line doesn't sound too exciting either.

good luck with the recovery, could you elaborate a bit on general life in chiang mai ? expenses, air quality, nature access, are locals friendly or hostile towards white gringo tourists etc ? thanks a lot

Hey guys, appreciate all the well-wishes/support.

Took me a week or so but I finally feel back to normal. Yesterday was the first day where I didn't have any sort of pain/twinge, so per doctor's orders, I'm allowed to get back in the gym today. Excited about that.

What I'm not excited about is the monthly recap part of this post. After being up $15k after the first two weeks, I dropped all of that back plus some. Was hesitant to look up the results on Sharkscope and when I finally did, I was pleasantly surprised that I "only" lost $3500 in total.

Gah, looking at that hurts a bit.

Funny thing is I feel I've gotten much better in many aspects of MTTs in the past two weeks, yet the results are much worse. I've had exactly two losing months before, but back then I was playing SNGs/Spins and for most of that I could rely on RB to pad the totals.

A losing month isn't the end of the world, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't gnaw at me a little bit. But as Joel Embid likes to say, 'Trust the process.' I'll continue to work on my game, put in solid volume, and I firmly believe that combination will lead to success. I'm constantly tweaking my schedule and have a few things in mind that I want to change/implement as well.

So let's skip past results and focus on the positives to come out of this month:

1) Volume
Originally wanted to get in 1000 games which was called 'ambitious' and ended up with more than double that. Stopping at around the 1000 game mark would have been significantly better from a profit standpoint, but I was able to use January to prove to myself that I still have the grinder heart and I'm going for 2000 again in February.

2) EV BB
Still holding strong at 15+ and that's mostly peak hours. I'm fully aware it's an imperfect metric, but it's one of the best that I have and is part of that process I was referring to earlier. If I keep building stacks and making deep runs, the 11th, 14th, 18th and 22nds will eventually becomes 1sts, 2nds, and 3rds.

3) No Burnout
Despite the downswing and the massive volume, I'm still as hungry and excited about these games and my potential winrate/equity. I'll prob be less enthused with another losing month, but going to take it one day at a time and...

Tomorrow's my last full day in Chiang Mai and I won't be spending it by grinding. Want to drive the motorbike around, eat at a few of my favorite places, and enjoy the day off. Booked a place in Bangkok for February and I should be all set up/back at the tables by then.

I dont know why i wasnt subd.

Good that you're feeling better.

Jesus christ, that volume... I mean how the actual fook is that possible ? How many tables do you play and for how many hours do you register, if you care to elaborate that ?
