Hey guys I've had a couple other threads before but I want to start a new one that I'll update semi-regularly.

In 2017 I grinded a decent amount. I started the year off poorly. In January I was playing higher stakes than usual since a friend offered to stake me and I ran bad in some deep big field runs in January. I had some bad ICM leaks. After that I had a couple solid months of lower stakes grinding. Then in April I had another deposit due on an apartment presale I was hoping to buy. So there went my bankroll. I grinded lowstakes for a bit and I was staked in June/July. Then at the end of July I started working in the film industry and grinded that for 4 months. It's pretty tiring with the long hours but I really liked the job.

Now I learned that banks treat the film industry like being self-employed so it's harder to get approved for a mortgage. A regular job sometimes would only take 3 months of work and a note from the employer to get approved so now I'm not sure what to do. I have about 7-9 months to get approved but I also really missed poker. I think for at least the first 3 months of 2018 I want to commit to playing low stakes MTTs and MTTSNGS grinding 5-6 days per week. I can average about 6000 hands per day so to get 500,000 hands would mean playing 83 days.

I'll try to review reguarly and stay focused etc take a day off here and there when I don't feel like grinding and take care of myself.

I don't want to set profit goals or even evbb/100 goals I just want to get the volume in and I trust if I play decent and the games stay somewhat soft the profit will follow.

First month back volume:

Marathon session to start the year! I was asleep before midnight and missed the new years thing just too tired and eager to grind.

First week of the year is in the bag. I'm taking today and tomorrow off the grind. I'll review a bunch and stuff tomorrow.

I think my biggest leaks right now are calling off shoves too light vs players who don't shove nash, 4-bet shoving too light and not adjusting my opening ranges/shoving ranges enough depending on the players left to act. I added in a line to one of my popups to show what the actual nash shoving %s look like so I know when to deviate/tighten my calling range:

[IMG][/IMG]

It would be a massive punt for example to call this nitregs SB open shoves with a*nash calling range since he shoves like 25-35% tighter than nash.

The total volume for the week was pretty insane. I think I ran pretty bad but could also play a lot better.

I'm at about the halfway mark of the month. I'm really happy with my volume.

I have a lot of things to work on. I'll spend the next couple days reviewing hard. I need to find more spots to 3-bet, flat in BB, steal from CO/BU, c-bet more and check-raise or raise flops more. I know why my c-bet OOP is so low I think it's cause it's supposed to be since in the games I'm playing there are a lot of tighter regs that flat really tight ranges IP.

There are so many situations where I flat IP say I flat MP vs EP and the board just smacks my range 78T or something and the guy still c-bets I wonder if I can raise my whole range on this board since I have very little air. I'm flatting something like AQo/KQs/AQ-ATs/QJs/JTs/77-JJ. Even vs a tight 14% EP opening range I have a decent equity advantage on that board and similar boards:

If poker is to be played like chess or how people play razz with the best cards showing taking the betting lead it should start to be the same for holdem as well the best boards for this person or that person should take the betting lead. I think I've talked about this before. Anyway I don't know if it matters much or affects my winrate much but I should start exploiting hard vs the 18-22% RFI in EP type guys flatting wider/floating more and raising c-bets more on these board textures because their range just can't handle the heat. They can't be c-betting 70% from EP OOP so profitably.

One thing I gotta do for sure is reconsider taking edge spots. Several players have told me before that they don't believe in edge passing because we get our edge from taking thin spots and our winrate. I finally heard an explanation yesterday though for why it's good. It's for ICM and there are early game ICM considerations as well and the factor of rake. If we take every flip the very first hand of a tourney on a soft table it's disastrous. If I know someone is overshoving AK and I have QQ and 56% equity I'm not winning since overall I lose that $1 rake every time I take that spot and there is the future equity of winning easy pots. 5000 starting chips are bought for $11 but are only worth $10 so 56% equity is only worth 5.60-$1 rake it's just not great.

Say there are nits on my left and I'll be able to steal their blinds easily or the guys on my right fold to 3-bets way too much. I should really edge pass hard in these situations and that's something I haven't been doing.

I'm going to rework all my calling ranges vs shoves. I've been calling close to nash which is disastrous vs nits and the population so I've recalculated population shoving ranges and adjusted my calling ranges. I have to adjust more and call nash or slightly wider vs good regs but vs unknowns or nit regs I will default to the population calling ranges which look more sound in general. I may even tighten them up more taking half a SB edge or something for spots greater than 8BBs.

I should rant a bit here too I think I'm running piss poor deep in tourneys:

I guess it's a small sample size but it feels like I'm constantly running into the tops of peoples ranges like JJ 3b jam into KK vs a guy playing 25/20 AK into AA **** like that and on top of that losing more than expected. It's brutal but I guess I have to get used to the variance of MTTs.

I feel like I'm crushing the 180s and have good reads on regs and stuff but again I need to edgepass more I'm taking every single thin spot I can find. Isoing good regs' CO shoves from BU for 6bbs with K6s, J9s type things that nobody really does even though it's nash and I gotta go back and see what my calling ranges are if I factor in half a SB edge. Maybe from 8-10bbs if there are no regs on my left and I think I can shove really wide I could still pass on a full SB edge and on really soft tables vs shoves on 12-20bbs maybe I can pass on a full BB edge? I'm not sure this is a new concept to me.

My winrate in the 180s must be among the best regs but I think it will go down once I start to pass on edges. Maybe I"ll start by adjusting just to have all my calling ranges to be default for versus population then expand on that by also factoring in a slight edge but I should probably just do that in game deciding to pass on the bottom of the calling range in spots if the tables good or whatever. I've been grinding so hard something has to give it's insane even the variance in 180s is brutal:

I don't rebuy and just 1 bullet the 3rs so that might contribute to the variance especially because I take every thin spot up to the last hand before the rebuy period ends. I think people just call way too tight especially on the hands leading up so I can't imagine deviating from that. I don't think I'll deviate much on taking open shove spots but more so just calling shoves or calling a 3-bet in a marginal spot where it's VS the one guy on the table who will play back and I can just avoid him and print off the other players etc.

Anyway a long post but I'll review really hard these next couple days. I may have mentioned it also but coming to mind I think I'm 3b jamming too wide vs open ranges so I gotta see how I'm doing there.

Alright I adjusted a bunch of spots.
Now I can say vs a 5BB Lojack shove when I'm in the big blind I'll call:

(48.1%)22+,A2+,K2s+,K5o+,Q3s+,Q8o+,J5s+,J9o+,T6s+, T9o,96s+,98o,85s+,87o,75s+,64s+,54s

Instead of:

63.5%, 22+ Kx+ Q2s+ Q6o+ J2s+ J7o+ T4s+ T7o+ 95s+ 97o+ 84s+ 86o+ 74s+ 76o 63s+ 65o 53s+ 43s

The ladder felt so dirty in game. It's fun and I don't think I'm losing or making much based on this adjustment it's very small but I gotta start with near perfect 5bb strategy and work upwards lol.

I reviewed a bunch today I'll do the same tomorrow and might work on adjusting calling ranges vs good regs as well. I'll review the call spots tons so hopefully they become pretty automatic and I make quick and dramatic in game adjustments depending upon the shover. The ranges for deeper stack will by default help me in final table ICM spots as well since they are tighter in all spots. A lot of the new calling ranges make a lot more sense anyway. I doubt this will affect my game too much since these aren't super common spots but it's a start.

You just use the single buy in and treat it as a freezeout?
No double stack and no add-on?

I stopped playing these a long time ago but this caught my interest.

Is that the done thing since they added rake?

Great winrates and I'm sure the results will follow. GL.

I used to play the 180s when i first joined a stable. I still fire some if i want to fill space with a turbo sng.
Excellent format to build your game /bankroll, and good practice for icm implications.
We used to take all +ev spots back then because games were more regish and couldnt pass any spots. I believe its not a mistake in that particular format to take almost every spot because the variance its there anyway.
Impressive ev/bb if you can sustain it you will be the top reg in them with no dispute.
Gl with your journey !

Solid day and past week so far.
It was cut short because of pokerstars' technical problems today.
I played a lot of hands still.

I jammed QJo HU into QQ to come 2nd in a 3r 180 and AJo into AA final 2 tables of Big 33 so the late game chipev will still be kinda bad I think.

I'll try to find a bunch of interesting hands and put some thread savers in here once in a while.

I passed the 100k hand mark. I'm starting to get sharper with my reads and ranges. I'm getting better at getting involved in pots with the whales and extracting max value.

I still spew a bit in postflop spots. Trying to bluff stations or I 3b jammed a flop with 96s on T38 vs a fun player who was check minraising weak ranges he snapped me off with bottom pair 73 and held.

DON'T BLUFF RAISE RIVERS VS AVERAGE REGS WHO CHECK/CALL FLOP CHECK/CALL TURN AND LEAD OUT RIVER ON 4 CARD STRAIGHT BOARDS. It baffles me why they do it especially in obvious spots where I will have a decent amount of river bluffs. If they have a **** straight check and I'll jam and they take all my monies. Exploitatively I should just fold these rivers because none of these players lead two pairs or anything it's just always a straight. I tried to bluff jam K9 on some J57T9 type board. I won't bluff very much in this spot but I thought it was obvious when he check called twice then lead river that he had an 8 straight so with a blocker to KQ straights it seemed like a good spot. I told myself I only do this with Kh since that blocks his KQs floats although he could have clubs or spades also.

I can't do this vs mediocre players I need to be more selective about who I try to bluff. I get semi-tilted by their river leads. This happened 5 or 6x yesterday and most of them I folded but I"m just thinking how ******ed is it for them to lead an 8 straight I'm just folding most of my bluffs and not calling with worse. This was semi-deep in a tournament and there are some ICM considersations. I can't just punt off like this unless I'm more sure about the spot and that they are capable of hero folding. Some regs lead like this to bet/fold.

Here was a hand extracting max value and just not messing around vs a whale. 35% donkbet 0% donk/fold and he bet/called my overshove earlier with a weak draw.

Hey thanks Jean-Serge. How've you been? I gotta catch up on your thread. I haven't played live in a while but I might for a bit tomorrow night at cascades mainly to meet up with friends and hang out. 2-5 is still running at riverrock and yeah I heard the new casino had to lower their rake because it wasn't even legal. I haven't actually been there yet.

Today was a great day. It's the kind of day that makes me love poker. It started with me getting semi-tilted coming 2nd in a $15 on demand and I'm thinking fk I run bad heads up. It seemed like for the longest time I was losing every all-in heads up. Not long after though I won an $8 180 then a $3r 180 then another $8 180 then a $15 on demand THEN I came 2nd in the big 7.50.

I've started picking my spots better and trying to adjust better vs players and just passing more on marginal spots and not trying to battle so much. Flatting more IP when fun players are in the blinds and picking spots better than usual to bluff. I want to review all of these tourneys next week. I really felt in the zone and focused today.

WP Yezz can't even checkshove just straight shove even with the ace of spades. I guess he has the right blockers to bluff.

https://www.boomplayer.com/26604157_6B95E1C611

It's always tougher losing HU to recreational players but I'm so grateful for how well the day went and to run so good to even come 2nd in the big 7.50 I really can't complain.

Anyway it was a super long day I'm gonna sleep a bit then probably mainly grind the turbo MTTSNGS tomorrow since I play on going to the casino tomorrow night for a few hours.

Would Party Millions in Montreal (10 mil guaranteed) be an option for you, if you go on a upswing?

I came 2nd yesterday or the day before in the PKO it sucks but feels so good to close this one out. I ran so good on the final table after semi-bluff spewing vs a guy who flatted aces pre. Hopefully we keep the momentum going through the weekend and through to the Sunday 10 milly coming soon. I gotta eat really healthy and do 15-20 miles on the desk treadmill daily. My diet has been terrible lately.

I'm starting my schedule a couple hours later these days but I still got 6000 hands in today.

I chilled this Monday/Tues a bit burnt out from the weekend and reviewing a bunch.
I finished off the first month of the challenge I'm really really happy with my volume. My winrate isn't great but I played a lot of tables and still have a lot of leaks and things to work on and improve. I need to stay on top of reviewing and studying.

I took off more days than I planned to I wouldn't mind it so much if had I something to do on my days off grinding but I just get bored and eat and watch dumb netflix movies I barely pay attention to.

Speaking of that I need to improve my diet and eating habits. I've walked tons on the treadmill this month and definitely enough to lose a few lbs but I've actually gained a few lbs since I eat like a maniac. Monday I went out and bought like 20 lbs of carrots and celery and peeled the carrots cut everything up and prepared them. I have to start chowing down on those veggies every day as my snacks. I think that'll help lose weight for sure. I'll try to do this regularly.

I've also downloaded the Calm app. I've been listening to that a bit. So I think it's good use on days off to relax. I have a couple new books I want to read. One book is just called Elon Musk and is a biography type book about him. The other is the Power of Now. I've heard Gil3000 mention it in his blog and I've had friends talk a lot about Ekhart Tolle so it'll be good to see what the hype is all about. I've just finished reading Stealing Fire which a poker friend recommended and it's a good book.

February will be a shorter month. I'll try to just keep at it and keep grinding hard. I might not move up much in stakes but my average buyin might go from $10-11 to $14-15 as I take more shots and play good value $55s.

The month in terms of profit was okay but I'm hoping it's a below average month.
So far since the end of November since coming back from work, I've bricked every $109+ shot I've taken. Hopefully that'll change in Feb.

Hey thanks Luxy.
It's been a while since an update.
This month my volume has been a lot lower but I've shipped a few tourneys.

This was the biggest one. The next day I fired 3 bullets into sunday 10 milly and also played the ACR and Partypoker $215-265 Sunday millions. It was a rough day. Those are the days you dream about but also the ones that affect you the most.

My friend showed me this article and it was really good: https://www.upswingpoker.com/tournam...er-ending-mtt/

I think for the near future I'll play a super low variance schedule.
I'm thinking early in the session just 8-10am till 2-3pm I'll mainly play 180s plus 5-10 smaller field $11-22 mtts. I'm thinking Ipoker mainly since their 20-30e tourneys during the week get less than 200 runners. Also I signed up and have been verified to play on pokerstars.es so I"ll try to game select a few 10-20e tourneys during the day. They have a few awesome looking Sunday tourneys. At night my whole schedule could be <400 entrants and on soft sites with a higher abi. I played around with that schedule last week and it went well.

Deucescracked the poker training site that I first learned about 180s and stuff through omgclaydol's series is launching a new website. I'm really excited to announce that I'll be a part of it producing coaching videos! I've made videos here and there for friends and myself to review and I enjoyed doing it so I think I'll enjoy this opportunity. It'll force me to review and improve my game to be able to produce good content.

Another thing I started playing on Global Poker and I shipped one of their "Grizzly Games" events yesterday and it's really cool what they do. They send out actual trophies to the winners. It's awesome I'm pumped to get mine in the mail. I'm back playing on Betonline but with a smallish roll. I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing there and trying to satelite into their Sunday majors every week. I had a few $1.5K-$2K CAD buyin days last week and almost half of that was for mttsngs but I feel really good about that schedule.

Another thing also is I might go back to work soon. In a few months it'll be around the time I can lock in a mortgage rate and secure the apartment so I applied for some plumbing/trades jobs and maybe I'll get back into that and finish my ticket. I'm still contemplating going for the apartment or selling off the assignment of contract and having a healthy bankroll again. It would be tough again to enter the housing market in Vancouver so I think I should at least go for it and see if I can get approved for the mortgage in a few months. It's a shame because I think the poker economy is pretty healthy and it's a good time to play. There are so many smaller sites geared towards recreational players but either way I'll be fine with whatever I do. Nothing will be as brutal as the film industry and having 0 time to play poker. I'll make sure to play nights and weekends still. When I quit my job back in 2015 it was because I was going super hard after work and on weekends and did really well for 3 months in a row so I thought **** I might as well give it a go full-time. I think I had 3 $8-10K profit months in a row back then in early 2015. I wasn't a good player looking back but I was playing the softest schedule and ran super good. It helps a lot in poker having a bankroll and being able to fire the juicy/softer higher stakes games. In an ideal world if I had a bigger bankroll I would play all nightly $55+ tourneys across the american based sites and all the soft site Sunday majors $215+.

Another thing I"ll start playing a regular Wednesday night live poker satelite game. They have a league and it's geared towards getting players to Montreal for the big10 milly. I'll try to make it there and I play the $22 feeder satelites on weekends.
