Re: 2016: Diversification (Fk EV$, I want the real thing)

I finally won one of those stupid $82 hypers this morning for $2.6k. I imagine the standard deviation from EV in those things must be awful, but I've played a lot of them previously. I won when my J6cc > JJ aipf HU for the title, so obviously deserved it.

I also played a lot of cash yesterday, with my evening session being one of my worst in a long time. Results weren't too bad, but I was misclicking all over the place, and couldn't find a fold in some really obvious spots. Think I'm feeling a little burnt out, after my biggest volume month in ages. I'll play Sunday this weekend, but other than that I'm done for the month. Total online results are currently a little over +$16k, and I haven't played any live poker.

I get home on Monday after almost a month away from the girlfriend/family/friends. So I'm really looking forward to a few drinks, nice meals and catch ups. My last few updates have been a bit dry, but I've not had much to write about. Just grinding it out and winning a bit.

One somewhat interesting hand from yesterday:

Hey, thanks for the gl man. Good luck to you too this year. I guess you think we should size up or check turn? Good chance you're correct, but I doubt it's a big mistake. If I'm missing something entirely then do tell, I'm always open to some free coaching!

Re: 2016: Diversification (Fk EV$, I want the real thing)

February

So another month in the books. The shortest of the year, but overall a pretty good one for me. The last few days were somewhat swingy. I played a full MTT schedule on Sunday and bricked just about everything. I had a 10th place in the $215 turbo, which would have been a day saver. But it wasn't to be. All things considered I ended -$4k on the day. I got back home on Monday morning, and spent a few hours relaxing; took the dog for a walk, watched some television, that sort of thing. I loaded some tables (zoom/MTTs) around 1pm, and I got second place in a $109 turbo a few hours into my session, for a little over $2k. I also won a small amount at cash games, before closing all of my tables and spending the evening with Aimee - watching films and catching up. Its really good to be home. Last night was definitely the best sleep that I've had this month.

Total profit for the of February month is ~$14k.

I did pretty well in MTTs and 500 zoom and lost a little bit at reg speed games over the piece. I was able to read two books - The Savage Detectives and To Kill a Mockingbird. Detectives was great fun, but I've already reviewed it briefly in this thread. TKAM I've read before. A few times actually. But it was in my bag while travelling, and it's one of my favourite novels. This thread outstanding, I wrote 16,000 words of a short novel that I'm working on. It's vaguely centered around poker, so if people are interested I'll post a few extracts in here at some point?

Re: 2016: Diversification (Fk EV$, I want the real thing)

So March has started on the right note for me. Winning a good amount of $ and the games don't seem as tough as they have been the past few weeks. I FT'd the $215t the other night again, but couldn't get it done. Really wanted to win that. Mostly I've just been lazy and grinding it out in the 200/500 zoom games. Which is easy to do when things are going well. But the aim of this year was to maximise my EV wrt game selection, and I definitely haven't been doing that. I'm going out for a meal and to watch Deadpool tonight, and then I have a big night out on Saturday with some old friends who I've not seen in a while. Pretty excited for that, even if it means I'll miss out on the Saturday night games and most of Sunday too through a hangover.

nh's Postflop sizing in H3 had me thinking a bit. Looking back, do you like it? Would you x back turn some % to let him bluff rivers? Or bet turn smaller again and go for 3barrels?

Thanks guys, I don't have an entire novel to post. But I'll definitely post a chapter or something soon.

Hey, thanks for posting. I've thought about this a lot since you posted. The short answer is; I don't know! I definitely think there's merit in using a flop sizing that gives us the option (or at least illusion/opportunity) of playing both a two or three street game. Facing this sizing Villain is going to struggle to call an appropriate % of hands on this flop texture, unless he starts calling unpaired stuff or raising flops. This gives us a really cheap and effective flop bluff with KJo/67s type things.

Also with this flop size we can geometrically size up on turns and river and play a 3-street game on some turns. Mostly spade turns, as villain will have a high % of hands that continue flop with a BDFD and fold turn to 30%. Whether or not these positives are negligible with such a low SPR and the upside or just betting bigger and getting more money in the pot is something I'm not sure of.

^Thanks for the answer, I think we could/should bet small again making it a 3 street game on some more turn cards than just spades, I would prob go small again on that 2h turn that came, seems like a great card as we have Ah also, so he can't have worse Ax w nut-heart, but understand where you are going with that logic of just using turn spades for a 3 street plan. Also, I think checking back AK on turn is missing value but what about AA w top set, that hand prob want to check at some high frequency?

Bet/check/bet with AA and a few bluffs seems like a reasonable gameplan, yeah. I agree we don't ever want to check back AK and I take your point that hearts are the second best turn cards to develop a three street plan on. I actually thought about saying something along those lines in my initial response. 4bet post flop pots aren't something I've ever done any off the table work on, due to the SPR limitations and how seldom they come up.

I chopped the late night $109 tonight as chiplead on stars for a little under $5k. I've been running very well on FTs this year, getting top 3 finishes in the majority of them. Long may it continue!

March is now at roughly +$7.5k. Let's keep this going.

Re: 2016: Diversification (Fk EV$, I want the real thing)

                  Hi,

So Sunday was a grind, as usual. I went deep in one of the Sunday Majors (final 3 tables) but the pay jumps are so top heavy that I barely broke even on the day. Also had a % swap sweat in the s500 and 6-max, but they both fizzled out with like 40 players remaining. Not my time, I guess.

Cash games have been pretty swingy. Dropped 1kbb in 2000 hands, but was able to grind it out and break even on the day. I woke up with a fever and feeling really congested yesterday morning. So I've spent the past 36hrs basically in my bed, trying to get rid of it asap.

Some of the bigger/more interesting cash hands played today:

                  1) I think this is probably slightly better than checking back

I've already played 6k hands today, which is the most volume I've put in so far this month. I don't know what it is, but something about getting hugely stuck early in the day just makes me want to grind it out. I'm sure it's a common phenomenon, but I just wish I had this motivation on days on which I start off winning!

                              Gl guys.

Can def relate to having bigger grind ethic in losing sessions, and it's a pretty annoying mental leak to have. Great that you rostuckoed that session at least, coming back from -10 bi is pretty impressive.

I sent that hand to a few people immediately after playing it, and got mixed responses on whether it was too thin/fine/clear check.

Villain the hand is definitely top 5 in the list of most aggro/thin-valuey. So basically I didn't expect to lose here very often. Also, I don't think the range of hands that we reach river with really needs to use multiple bet sizes. Most hands want to bet big or check.

we don't really get to the river that often with hands stronger than AJ/AT, maybe AQ, those wanna bet small as our bluffs, because his range is either really weak or really strong , which would be the case with AK

lol not sure what you play denito but jamming is obviously not "pretty bad" although betting smaller is probably higher ev

I think jam has worse ev than betting smaller or checking, so if you choose worst ev play possible it qualifies as pretty bad to me

I'm not sure that there exists a game tree in which the EV or betting small>check>jam in that order with an SPR of 1.3

Anyway, it's a pretty divisive hand, which is what I expected. It may well be a mistake. I make a lot of mistakes, but thankfully so does almost everyone else in the player pool!
