Background
I'm a 29yo dude currently splitting rent with my brother. I work part-time and make enough to cover my end of the bills with some change left over but I'm looking to make a little supplemental income playing poker. I'm gonna have to knock the rust off though b/c the only online poker I've played since black friday has been play money lol (2.4B on stars whoop). I bumped into Doug Polk's bankroll challenge videos on youtube which prompted me to look into real $ options for US players and alas I decided to make a deposit on ignition.

So I'm excited about playing some mtts again with perhaps the occasional husng. I won 6k online before black friday and most of it was hu, but I feel mtts best suit my psychology because I get hype for them whereas games that are available all the time like cash and sngs just seem like a grind. I always did well in mtts when I took them seriously including binking a $5 for $900+ on one occasion, although that also had 900+ entries which is gonna be rare on ignition.

Challenge
It's pretty simple: itt I'm going to be logging all of the games I play and all of the money I spend on gas and eating out. The goal is that the former outweighs the latter at the end of the year. I consider this my first step in utilizing poker as a supplemental income. This year food and gas, next year who knows? So let's get this thing goin...

Days 1 & 2
After I deposited I messed around in a few games just to get acquainted with the client since I've never played on ignition before. Apparently the casino bonus requires a "playthrough" of 25x the amount to unlock your money for withdrawal so I'm gonna have to cancel that. I should have picked the poker bonus but when it said the casino bonus was immediately available I thought I could just put it on a hand of blackjack and see what happened. Apparently it's immediately available to play with but you can only withdraw money after meeting the playthrough requirement. Anyway, here's where we're at:

Poker
$5nl hu -$0.41
$1 husng +$0.95
$1 hyper +$2.85
$5 husng +$4.75
$1 blackjack +$1
$3.30 mtt -$3.30
$5.50 mtt +$54.50
$5.50 mtt -$5.50

+$54.84

Food & Gas
-$0.75 vending lol

Total
+$54.04

Shazaaaammm!!! Just like that! Damn, playing poker for a living is easy

I'm planning on updating anytime I get a decent score or go to the pump since that's when the numbers are gonna fluctuate. Right now I'm freerolling on like half a tank. And just to be clear I'm only counting the money I spend on food outside of groceries, i.e. eating out, fast food, and vending at work. Maybe this challenge will have the added benefit of motivating me to cut back

Day 3

Thank's Killa, just trying to keep things interesting with something a little different! I guess at the end of the day nothing's gonna be interesting unless good results start rollin in...

That said, yesterday went about as bad as it possibly could have. I'm already dreaming of a nice tourney score to make it all go away. I played some mtts while friends were over, just hanging out with games running in the background and got hold of several times starting stack in a few of them but didn't cash any, including 1 bubble. That was followed by spending more than usual on beer & snacks and the worst day I've ever had in our friendly little micro cash game. My brother made a few full houses and a river flush and I found ways to pay him off on all of them.....sigh.

Poker
+$54.84 balance
-$3.30 mtt
-$3.30 mtt
-$2.20 mtt
-$4.40 mtt
-$53 home game
------------
-$11.36

Food & Gas
-$0.75 balance
-$23.78 beer & snacks
----------------
-$24.53

Total
-$35.89

Day 4

After yesterday's abysmal result I got a couple cashes including this nice little score:

So that brings some relief after a really crappy day. Kind of a sick last hand in that tourney by the way:

Those always suck especially for the biggest pay jump hu but I can't complain it's a super turbo and I got really lucky to make the final table. Anyway here's today's update:

Poker
-$11.36 balance
+$5.20 ($3.30 mtt)
-$3.30 (mtt)
+$62.94 ($3.30 mtt)
------------
+$53.48

Food & Gas
-$24.53 balance

Net
+$28.95

Enough to cover a tank of gas for the ol' hyundai (that's right, I'll admit it)! We've got M-F coming up so we'll see what happens. No home games and should be minimal spending eating out so that just leaves online action. I'm starting to get a feel for how I'm going to approach these mtts. The turbos I like to late reg with ~20bbs when it's getting serious and I don't necessarily have to pay attention since the decisions are mostly just based on stacks/position/cards. The slower structures I like to reg earlier and actually pay attention and take notes on people. Either way I think I have a pretty good edge b/c even in the turbos and hypers most people have no idea how to play a shortstack.
