2016 and beyond: what to do 2016 and beyond: what to do

hi -

I'll be graduating college in a little over three months and would like to be able to play poker for at least the next few years. With a lot of hard work I think this is do-able. I'll be tracking my progress here.

I'll mostly be playing 100-200nl cash and MTTs

Today at 200nl:

i've been playing roughly 7 years, with pretty minimal volume for the middle half of that. my bankroll comes from strictly MTTs, had a pretty sick summer last year and now trying to adapt to cash land.

--------------------

day 2:

pretty minimal volume past few days but playing (and running) well. tomorrow is day 1B (i think?) of a 1k live MTT i'll be playing so probably won't update this thread for a few days.

I don't play at all right now, have never played $1-2 and have played so little 6 max that I've never bothered to analyze any part of it so take this with appropriate caution but you might want to start a few stakes lower. I'm just saying that because if you're coming back from any extended hiatus the games are likely much tougher than you remember them and from reading the forums I've seen strong evidence that many players severely underestimate the withering effects of rake and in extremis its capacity to nullify any skill edge entirely.

The first three hands all contain significant mistakes*. With JT we are effectively pure bluffcatching. You can expect chops to represent a fraction of a combo, and that does matter, but not enough to make it a mandatory call based on equity. Generally speaking normal sized river raises are not good spots to start looking people up without reads. Folding is probably something like 5-10bb better than calling.

On the JJ hand, calling the turn vs a pot sized bet is probably close to 0 EV. But without an appropriate (and very rare) read the river call is bad spew. This hand is the main reason I say maybe drop down a couple stakes. He showed down a unicorn in this case. You might generously estimate .1 combos of worse "vbetting", though in this case its not at all clear if he intended a bluff. Anyway we're pure bluffcatching the river vs a gigantic overbet. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that it wouldn't surprise me if a typical river call efficiency vs 3.5x overbets were less than 0.5. It's almost certainly less than .75. The board missing his range slightly mitigates things but only slightly. Board textures affect RCE's on the order on 1 or 2%. Bet size can affect them an order of magnitude higher. (edit: misread stacks, still an overbet and analysis still stands)

The 78o hand brings up a useful principle in both poker and life, never assume unnecessary variance. Unless villain folds >50% flatting will be both significantly better and significantly less volatile. Assuming villain isn't a maniac 4 bettor, flatting 78o will never be a major mistake relative to raising (assuming folding is the worst choice) until villain starts folding in the neighborhood of 55% vs 3x. The flop cbet is mandatory, on that board IP will be overfolding a lot even if he is very tight PF. Turn and river you're just riding the variance-coaster. The 1.75ish overbet is the way to bluff but unfortunately for our sanity its also the way to get a HU PLO sigma at 6 max No Limit.

*Assuming the appropriate reads weren't there. Vs non-elite players the two river spots would require both large samples and large discrepancies relative to typical population play for deviations in our own strategy to be warranted. If we're playing an elite player who's likely to be effectively exploiting us without overtly alerting us to the fact then this is a rare spot where the Js blocker clearly matters, so nice play. But even at $1-2 if someone that good is in this particular game you should probably just leave. Attempting to use any kind of GTO reasoning where it's not called for in today's games is a serious error imo.

What site are you playing cashgames on?

Thanks Trent! I've been putting most of my volume in on carbon and ignition, but some random sites here and there as well.

Busted the 1k liveament KK < AA and then next hand A5 < AA. Felt like I played really well and I'm feeling more comfortable playing live than ever but wow its awful. The type of people the casino attracts is the exact opposite of who I am.

Moving on -----

Today:

Not really happy with the volume but school and life take priorities for now. Got some money on a few other sites as well so hopefully get to put in some volume there.

update:

Last week while I was running some programs my motherboard decided to rip on me, and instead of replacing it I decided to just get a new laptop.

Pros:

It's a gaming PC and fast

Cons:

Lost my database

-----

I can always get the hands back if I want to but I don't really have the time at the moment.

anyways the past few days have been decent poker wise:

also been playing a decent amount of MTTs. got 3rd in the $162 on merge for 5kish and 3rd in a $30 on WPN for 1kish.

Feeling pretty good about my game, just need to put in the time.
