About to hit the tables, repping my Orange and Black.

Three goals today, since I'm a little tired.

1. Just play a solid game.
2. Make no big mistakes.
3. Don't just put in hours, dig deep for focus.

Another day, another tourney pro at my table at 1/2, even more ownage. She's way better than the one yesterday, but isn't really a name pro.

April 22 - "The Roc Boys in the building tonight. / Oh what a feeling, I'm feeling life."

When I got up, I was debating between playing 1/2 and 2/5, given that my total roll is where I wanted it to move up with a 2K shot. As I did my studying, I found myself re-reading the same paragraph over and over, and I only got about 5-6 hours of sleep last night, so 1/2 it was.

I get seated in a new game, which seems mediocre at first. A beautiful girl sits down, like I'm talking perfect 10, and I expect her to be bad, but the first time she pitches her cards into the muck I can tell she's a player. When she gets her Borgata card swiped in I see her name - it's Anna Khait. Her Twitter lists her as a poker player, she's done modeling and she seems to know all the tourney pros who stop by. She's clearly a good player after watching her a bit.

More on her in a bit. I'd put a picture in here from Google, but it just seems creepy. She was a cool girl, but she was getting hit on constantly, so I didn't even try. You could tell she had her shield up.

So anyway, I pick up TT and raise to $10 and the BB calls. He's an old man, I don't have any specific reads.

Flop ($19): J75x

He checks, I bet $15, he calls.

Turn ($46): Tx

He leads for $25 and has $240 behind. His hand is shaky. I raise to $85, he calls. The plan was to size it to set up a river shove for his last $180. 8:spade9:spade is a possibility here, but I'm getting the money in if I can. AJ, 77, 55 are possibilities. So's the nut flush draw. I'm looking for any non-spade river...

River ($216): 9x

He checks. OK, no nine either. What to do, what to do? If I shove, I'm not sure what he pays off with. I don't think he has an 8 often, but it is possible. I tank for probably 30-45 seconds and finally decide to check. The thought process was, old men rarely pay off big bets on scary boards. I didn't want to bet like $100 and have him raise because that would suck. He tabled QQ and my hand was good. In hindsight, I should have shoved because he's just so rarely going to A) have an 8 and B) check it on the river.

Even if he only calls me down 50% of the time, that's a $90 mistake. Ugh. He also proved to be not the typical old guy - he was pretty loose and bad.

But, we live and learn. Later there's an EP raise to $15 and I call in position with TT. Four to the flop.

Flop ($58): 837x

It checks to me last to act and I bet $55. A seemingly solid player ships it for $92, I call, he has 77 and holds. Not much I can do with the way that hand played out.

Later, I win a big pot when I flop a set and fire away with it on a KQ6 board with 66 and a spade draw out. The turn was a Q and I got check-raised and shipped it and got called by QJ and held. That put me up over $500.

As my session went on, I felt like I was getting mentally stronger. Bulletproof coffee is the absolute stone cold nuts.

Then, with one limper, I raise to $12 with 78o in the CO. Anna calls in the BB, but the limper I was trying to isolate folds.

Flop ($24): KJJx

Anna checks, I bet $15 and she calls. I've bluff-raised her once before, and I suspect she may be calling me down a little light. It's not a board I want to 2 barrell on, so I'm basically done with it.

Turn ( $49): Q

As the heart hits, I pick up a read on her that gives me a gut feeling she doesn't like it. This one's pure instinct, combined with a little from the poker tells book. She fires $20. I raise to $65. She shakes her head, smirks and folds. She's showed like 3 bluffs to others at the table, and nothing would please me more than to show it, but I don't.

Later I get a seat change to get position on two players I think I can capitalize on. It takes me from being a couple seats to her right to being a couple on her left. She then raises to $10 UTG and I call her in position with 68 because I think I have a good read on her. An old man calls on the button.

Flop ($29): T9x3x

She bets $16. I sense weakness and float her. The old man folds. I figure when my read is right, I'll steal it. If I'm wrong, I can pick up a straight that she won't see, or a backdoor heart draw that she won't see.

Turn ($60): Tx

She doesn't like it, she thinks a bit and checks. I bet $40 and she quickly folds. I'm guessing AK/AQ.

Later, she bluffs the same player for the second time and shows him. He says, "I'm going to have to get you back." She laughs. I chime in with, "Don't worry. I've already gotten her twice, she just doesn't know it." She laughs and gives me the, yeah right, like you bluffed me, look.

Our game gets extremely short handed for a while and I try to keep talking people into staying because I love playing live players short handed and think I have enormous edge, even against a lot of the good ones. The guy on my left is a pretty solid player, but he bluffs more than people realize and I get a read on him.

We had all agreed no chopping. Four handed, it folds to my SB. I raise to $10 with two napkins and he calls. The flop comes out like QJX. I cbet $15 and he calls.

Turn ($47): Pairs the rag

I am about to fire the second barrell, but I pick up a read on him that tells me he has nothing and if I check he'll bluff. I check, he bets $16. I raise to $46 and he quickly folds. He claims he had a J, and says he put me on one too, but I don't believe him for a second. Meanwhile, I tell him, "A Jack? I wouldn't do that with a Jack. I had far more."

I continue to run over the table short handed. The guy on my left is solid but totally out of his element short handed and I have a read. The next guy over is a young Asian kid who is decent full ring, but adjusted really poorly short handed. He called my super aggro BTN/CO raises wide out of position preflop, then played fit or fold. When the table breaks at 7:45 I elect to leave since I was leaving at 7:55 to go watch the Flyers game anyway.

I was in for $300 and cash out $616, for a +$316 in just over six hours. Now I'm just chilling watching the Flyers in the room, who aren't running as good as I am.

It's been energizing and uplifting to see all the pros walking around at the WPT event, and a great reminder of how many people are out there living the life they want, traveling and playing cards.

I've gotta say, though. I've got my feet kicked up, I'm relaxing and enjoying life. I feel a lot of satisfaction with how I've played lately and how I battled through the downswing and poker has been a lot of fun this week.

Suddenly I can flop sets again. Sat down to play a couple hours before bed and so far in 1.5 hours I've had KK twice (but ran into AA once and cracked by A8 the other), JJ twice, TT once and 55 once. Flopped two sets but one was a monotone board so I didn't make much. But as I'm typing this my QQ is cracked by AT. Still sick.

I forgot to mention I tried to get into an insane 2/5 game tonight but the transfer list was too long to make it worth sitting in a regular 2/5 game while waiting.

Go for it on weekends and build it up, there's always time to make some changes and all. The cash is a lot from where I started but nothing compared to where I'm going. It'll take a lot more to save up a full time roll.

I just got stuck like 400 then flopped quads twice in 3 hands. Quad tens not good for the 1pm high hand but quad 8s on the board for 2 to 3 since I tanked the turn and river. Trying to make them hold for 59 minutes to ship 500.

April 23 – “I’m so far away / from the place I used to be, struggling usually. / Look at the newer me, fate pursuing me. / I can feel the energy in the air. / It feels like I’m supposed to be here.”

So I went over to the Wild Wild West, because I knew I wouldn’t be playing over 10 hours and I need to keep my average session at the Borgata up to keep getting comps.

The action wasn’t great, and I had to get on a list and wait a bit. They had lists for 1/1 and 1/2, each 6 names deep with 3 names on both and having just sat a player on both lists in a 1/1.

They announced they’d call a 1/1, and I went to the desk and lobbied for a 1/2. I explained that if they called the 1/2 they’d get all six off the 1/2 seated, plus the player they just sat in a 1/1, thus getting them a 7-handed game plus allowing them to call one more off the 1/1 list, leaving them 2 on that list who may even decide to sit. If they called the 1/1 first, they’d have a six handed game, and still have six names on the 1/2 list, which could break the 1/1 game as 1/2 seats opened.

Fortunately, logic prevailed. These are the types of things we need to be really alert about as players. My hourly in a 1/2 is $20-$30, but in a 1/1 it’s probably $10-$20.

Unfortunately, the table still pretty much sucked. I haven’t played more than a hand or two in an hour, and none have gone to showdown, so my image should be solid. It’s a super NL, so I’m in for $500 (the max buyin).

There’s an EP limp and the HJ raises to $15. I call on the button with 79 EP calls.

Flop ($39): 85x3x

EP checks, PFR (an Asian guy in his 20s with headphones) bets $30. I call, EP calls.

Turn ($129): 8x

It checks to me. Neither of them should have 8s in their range, and I can rep 78, 89 and A8 pretty credibly I think. I bet $75. EP thinks for about 20-30 seconds and folds. The PFR thinks about 10 seconds and calls. He has $180 behind.

River ($279): Ax

He checks. I wait about 5-10 seconds and move all-in, covering his $180. He snap calls with QQ. Sick call, I guess. I later discovered that he’s pretty good at making tight laydowns with everything but his big pairs, which he calls down way too light.

That had me stuck pretty good and I was in the game for $840. He stays for about 45 more minutes and racks up and I immediately look for a seat change. None of the other games look great, but they cant be any worse. There’s one game that looks a little better, but it has 1 seat open and we have 2, so I have to wait. A few minutes later we get a player in and I take the transfer.

Three hands in, I pick up TT in MP and raise to $10. The guy on my left, a solid regular I have played with before, flats. An old guy who just sat down in his first hand raises to $25. It folds around and we both call.

Flop ($72): QT2

I think for a bit. I would like to check-raise, but not on this board. I can’t let AcKx check, so I need to fire. I bet $50. Reg insta-folds and the old guy calls. He has $125 left.

Turn ($172): T

There are a lot of factors now. First, what gets me paid off for his last $125? I think probably checking is best for that, but it’s debatable. Second, the bad beat. AK, QQ, 89/K9/J9 (highly unlikely), AJ, KJ:club (also unlikely) all have outs to beat me, and I’d like that to happen. I doubt he folds a nut flush, but he could fold some of the smaller flushes, so no point in betting. Plus he’ll probably pay off on the river with those anyway.

River ($172): 2x

I move all-in, he thinks for about 10 seconds and calls with AA. My hand is good, but no high hand promotion for the hour since a straight flush is already on the board. It’s about 1:55.

Two hands later I pick up 88. There’s a $12 raise in MP, I call in the BB.

Flop ($21): K28x

I check, he checks.

Turn ($21): 8x

Now I have an interesting conundrum. It’s unlikely to be past 2pm, and I need it to be past 2pm to go on the board for the next hour’s high hand. Thus, A) I cannot have the turn go bet-fold. B) I need to waste time.

I think for about 30 seconds and check. He checks.

River ($21): 2x

I tank for about 45 seconds and check the time. It’s 2:01. I bet $15. He calls. I quickly show and say, “Sorry, I had to get it into the 2pm hour so I could have a shot at the high hand.” He is totally cool with it.

Meanwhile, the 10 seat, an old guy who’s not in the hand, speaks up.

Old guy: “It’s the time the hand started, not when it ends.”

Me: “Floor! Are we in the new hour for high hand? It’s 2:01 right?”

Old guy: “You don’t get it, the hand started in the past hour.”

Me: “Well I’m checking.”

Old guy: “I’m telling you, I can make them go to the cameras and see when the hand started, you aren’t getting it.”

Me: “Why in the world would you do that?”

Two people chime in to take my side and the dealer stays silent. The floor comes over and the guy doesn’t say anything to the floor, who doesn’t ask when the hand started and seems to think it’s when the hand ended. She puts me on the board for the new hour.

The guy then acts like he did me a favor by not arguing against me to the floor.

Me: “Why would you do that to anyone?”
Old guy: “Well, I didn’t, that’s the point, I helped you out.”

Like, WTF, was the guy trying to get me to give him a cut if I won? Yeah, right.

So I was on the board with 8888K… But I needed it to hold 59 minutes.

About eight hands later, UTG limps and I raise $12 with 88. Six call.

Flop ($78): Q85x

I bet $65, everyone folds. That gets me almost unstuck.

Unfortunately, at 2:27, someone makes 8888A in the 2/4/6 limit game. I do eventually get slightly unstuck, but late in the session I lose a couple of pots with hands I have to bet-fold on the flop to aggression from passive players.

This was the high point.

After 5 hours, I rack up my $708 and leave, -$132. I have to hit up the Borgata again on the way out of town to fix an issue with my March bonus comp dollars and room payment being charged to my card instead of comps, but I get it all taken care of…

I won't be hitting the 150 hours goal, I'm only at 41 hours right now. After the initial run bad, I took a break so it is what it is. I may hit 80-90, though. I'm planning a busy poker stretch to close out the month.

I whiffed on the WSOPC, although I could play a main event satellite tonight, but it overlaps with the Flyers game so I won't miss a playoff game. The poker tells book is done, and I'm well into NLHTAP instead of Professional NL Hold Em, swapped the order on those.

I got my bonus comps... Delaware online poker totally dried up for action, so I'm pulling that money out and that goal is not happening, though I did play some early in the month with poor results.

I may hit the $9,500 goal, and I think it'll end up being 3 cycles of the Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol but those results have been exciting.

Yikes, I was supposed to be going to the gym. Oops. How's practicing golf once as a substitute? Yeah, bad job on this one. 220 pounds by 4/30? That's unlikely, but I'm making good progress.

I haven't actually played any golf, and probably won't - maybe solo round on Wednesday.

Do something fun out of the ordinary... Hmm. Does winning money at poker count? LOL, after March's downswing, April's upswing felt fun and out of the ordinary.

I did go to a Sixers game against the Celtics, so that was fun and a bit out of the ordinary. It was semi work related, but not really.

I'd like to figure out another one and do it before the end of the month, I'll have to think about it. I think that balance is key. As much as I'm loving poker right now, I need to balance it and keep myself wanting more.

I was going to play some 1/3 at Harrahs Philadelphia today, but after two straight 3:45 am wakeups, I wasn't well rested enough to play anywhere close to my A game so I scrapped it. I plan to study, catch up on some PG&C threads I've been wanting to read, and possibly run some errands. Then I'll get a good night's sleep tonight and I plan to play a long session tomorrow if all goes well.

It'll be my 2/5 debut, and I intend to crush it and never look back.

April 27 - "I stepped it up another level, meditated like a Buddhist."

I arrived at the Borgata much later than planned, and hadn't made it to Parx or Harrahs as planned over the weekend. Instead, my Saturday turned into a fun day off - I played a par-3 course with my Dad and then went and hung out at my Uncle's house with a couple of my cousins and my Aunt and Uncle drinking around their fire pit. Good times were had, but I was hung over on Sunday and didn't feel up to playing. Then I tried to nap and failed and got out to the Borgata pretty late. I checked in and decided to play 3-4 hours of 2/5 and get my debut out of the way.

Early on, UTG+2 limps and I raise to $25 with AQ He calls. He's a deep stack (like $2500) drinking Corona. I've got approximately the $500 I bought in for.

Flop ($56): T88x

He checks, I bet $35, he calls.

Turn ($126): 4x

He checks, I think and check.

River ($126) Tx

He bets $35. I call. He says "nothing, you're good." I show and he says "Do you believe he called me with A high??"

A few hands later there are a few limps and I have 8T:diamond in the CO and raise to $35. The BB calls and two limpers call.

Flop ($146): KQ7

It checks around

Turn ($146): 2

It checks to me and I bet $100. It folds around to the guy on my right from the last hand and he says, "Your set is too obvious bro," and folds.

Later there are two limps and I have AK in the HJ. I raise to $30. It folds around to a limper, the same one from the previous hands, and he calls.

Flop ($71): 999

Check, check.

Turn ($71): K

He checks, I bet $40, he folds.

The same player limps and I raise to $25 in MP with KJ. The LJ calls (Asian kid, gambling), LP calls (tight Middle Eastern guy), and UTG+1 calls (our usual villain).

Flop ($100): J84r

The villain donks for $80. I tank a bit as to whether or not to raise here, because I don't think he has 9T, so I think his range is like AJ, KJ, QJ, TT, 99, and sets. I decide to just flat call.

Turn ($260): 4

He checks, I think and check.

River ($260): K

He bets $100. We're 500 effective, and I debate a raise but I decide I can't get a call from much of anything I beat - maybe AJ, but I'm going to get shipped on by everything I lose to. I flat call, he has KJ, we chop.

So all is going well, and I am up about $120-$130, when the following hand comes up and I decide to start a bonfire with my money. I mean, this is a blowup that would make even Mike Matusow cover his eyes and hang his head.

Three limps, I'm in the CO and raise to $30 with 88. The button puts $60 out, with two stacks of $15 touching the betting line, and two not. He then goes back and adds $10 and stacks it and pushes it all forward. I tell the dealer it should only be $60 but he disagrees because it wasn't 100% over the line. I am 90% sure this is the wrong ruling, but decide it's probably more -EV to call the floor over $10. One limper calls, I call. One limper has like $400, he's a terri-bad old Asian man who doesn't have a clue. The 3bettor is a gambly Asian kid, but he hasn't 3bet before.

Flop ($220): AQ9r

It checks around.

Turn ($220): 7x

The older guy checks, I bet $140. I'm fine with this. The button thinks for like 20 seconds and calls. The old guy folds.

River ($500): Ax

This is a really bad card to barrel on. It's now easier for KK/JJ to call. Never the less, I fire $250. He thinks for about 20-30 seconds, says, "OK," and moves all-in. I'm about to insta-muck when I realize that my play was even worse than I thought. He only has $128 more, which means I'm getting like 9 to 1 on a call. I don't know if he's bluffing 10% of the time here, probably not, but I call anyway getting 9 to 1.

He was not bluffing. He didn't have KK, JJ, or AX. No, sir, I bluffed into quads. Brilliant. After that I got up and left with $50. This may well be one of the worst hands that's ever been posted in a PG&C thread, but I keep it real and post the good ones and the bad ones.

So my first foray into 2/5 lasted 3 hours, -$450. I've still got a few buyins to shot take with, so I'll continue that for now and hopefully avoid any further blowups. This was my first one in a long, long time, but it came at the worst possible time as I moved up. Now I need a little run good so that I don't get into an annoying pattern of grinding up money to take a shot, then lose it at 2/5 and move back down. Plus, there's the Millionaire Maker.

April 28 - "This is a minor setback. / Yo, still in all we livin, just dream about the get back."

Things started off great after I got into a new 2/5 game. There were two limps to my CO and I made it $30 with 55. The button, small blind and an older Asian man who limped all call.

Flop ($126): K95

SB fires $50. It folds to me and I make it $150. He calls. That leaves me $305 behind.

Turn ($426): 7

He checks, I move all in for $305 and he calls with KJo. That gets me up to $1,037. It's always nice to get it in for $1K with your opponent drawing dead.

A little later, There's one limp I make it $25 in the cutoff with KJo. The button, BB and a limper call.

Flop ($101): Q72x

It checks through.

Turn ($101): Kx

BB bets $45 and I'm the only caller. I've seen him make weak bets with big hands.

River ($191): 7x

He bets $200. I tank. He basically either flopped a set and rivered a boat or he's bluffing missed clubs. I call and he has KK, which really surprises me. He flatted it preflop with already the button having called - and he checked a flop that could be dangerous.

Later, EP raises to $20 and there are 3 calls. I'm in the BB getting over 4 to 1 with 57o and a UTG limper is reaching for chips to call. I call.

Flop (120): Q6:diamond8x

It checks to the pre-flop raiser who bets $90 and folds to me. We've got effective stacks of $800. This is one of those spots where if I'm playing 75o, I have to be aggressive in this spot. His range includes a lot of hands I can force him off of, and I have been very tight so far and he's paying attention to the game. I raise to $315. He tanks and eventually moves all-in. I am priced into a call now getting like 2.5 to 1. I call. The turn and river brick out and his KK holds up.

I reload for another $500. There are three limps and the SB completes, and I have TT in the BB. I raise to $50. A limper calls and the SB jams for $113. I raise to $225, the other guy folds and my TT holds up.

Then the very next hand there are three limps and I complete the SB with 56o. The BB raises to $30, three calls, I call.

Flop ($150): K74x

Check, the BB bets $25, a limper calls, another raises to $75. I call, the guy in the middle ships it for a total of $210 (he's pretty loose and bad), the raiser re-ships for a total of $270, and I tank, do the math (it's close) and call.

Turn (805+120): Brick

River (805+120): 3

The guy who shipped shows K4, I show 56, and the old Asian guy holds his cards and just waits for them to count the sidepot and push it (this takes about 30 seconds), then flips A2. Fun to be slowrolled for the $805 main pot while shot-taking.

A little later, the HJ raises to $20 (new player, seems solid), and I call on the button with KQo.

Flop ($46): KT6r

He bets $30, I call.

Turn ($106): Tx

He checks, I bet $60, he calls.

River ($226): 5x

He checks, I bet $135. He snap calls, I show, he shows AK and I value towned myself.

Later I limp 55 in middle position and six go to the flop.

Flop ($30): J95r

I bet $20, and a late position player raises to $80 with about 300-320 behind. He's pretty good, but possibly steaming. He's been very aggressive and running bad and showing frustration. I flat call.

Turn ($190): 4

I check and he tanks for a while and bets $225, leaving around 100 or a little less behind. I shove, he snap calls.

River ($840): Brick heart

I show, he shows his neighbor and mucks real high and I see paint and a 9, so I assume J9. That gets me back up to $958, only stuck about $40.

A little later, I call the SB with J6. We go five to the flop.

Flop ($25): T8Tx

I bet $15, an EP limper raises to $45, and another EP limper calls. The guy who raised is drinking and playing reckless, so his range is like any T, any 8, J9, any pocket pair, any club draw and possibly nothing at all. The guy who called is pretty good so his flat call worries me. Still, I'm getting over 4 to 1, so I call.

Turn ($160): 3x

It checks around. Now I put the raiser on nothing, or an 8, and the caller on a draw.

River ($160): 5

I bet $100, the raiser insta folds and the solid player calls. I show, and he shows A7 to take it. I'm thinking this is a spot where in 1/2 I would play it this way but in 2/5 maybe I shouldn't. A good player limped in EP and I put him on a draw, so he basically has to have J9 suited which can't be clubs or a bigger club draw. In 1/2, I take a lot of these pots by firing on the turn and river if I have to, and having a good feel for where weaker players are. I should probably fold this in the SB or play it passively post flop and keep the pot small.

Anyway, he racks up and leaves and I seat change into his seat to get position on the two bad players in the game. It puts two good solid players on my left, and a few unknowns in those middle spots.

My first hand after the seat change, UTG raises to $20 and there's a call. I pick up KK and raise to $90. This leaves me $630 behind and the other guy just sat from a broken game and started with a little under $600.

He thinks for a bit and raises to $315. The guy in the middle folds, I think for about 20 seconds and ship it in. He says something that sounds like, "F---." and calls, so I figure I'm good in a $1,186 pot. The board runs out clean, I show, and he shows AA. Guess I misheard.

Nothing I can do there, it's like 116 BBs.

I play til my blind and get up with my last $140 and leave. 4.5 hours, -$860. That takes my shot to -$1,310 in about 7.5 hours.

I don't think I'm outclassed at 2/5, but the solid players are definitely better than they were at 1/2. They're bluffing more and sizing bets differently and more creatively. So far I think I've handled this ok, but it's more mentally draining to deal with. I also think spots you bet for thin value vs regs at 1/2 you have to check at 2/5. There's also a lot less chatter, which just makes it so much more boring.

The bad players have a lot more gamble in them and pots get big quick, which is definitely making me a little uncomfortable given that I'm shot taking. Judging by the hands I played, I'm certainly not playing like scared money, even if I'm feeling it a bit.

This takes my roll back down to about $7,000, so I could shot take for another 1K, and I think I'll do that at Parx tomorrow and play a short afternoon session before the Flyers game. Then I've got broadcasting work the rest of the week and I'll be back at it on the weekend.

I meant to include this in the last post, but I am starting to get a little uneasy because back when I was trying to move up stakes in college, I had a terrible streak of moving up, running awful with coolers and suckouts, moving down and running good, then repeating the process. Hopefully I'm not starting that vicious cycle here.
