Troy's Rather Conservative Bankroll Management For MTT's And SNG's (BANKROLL BETWEEN $0 - $1500)

So guys, I would class myself as an experienced profitable low-mid stakes MTT player and this BRM is something I have been working on for a very long time. I feel it suits me perfectly and hits the mark perfectly for what I feel comfortable with when it comes to how much $$$ I am staking in relevance to how much bankroll I have. This is very important when it comes to playing my A game as I only feel comfortable playing within my means. This is a pretty conservative bankroll management and considers I will not be redepositing and this is my one and only shot. I don't feel its too conservative for me as I have been on many large swings and I have factored all of this into it.

This can be used with a bankroll between $0 - $1500. Once I get above this level I will make another one similar for a bankroll between $1500 - $10000.
I am sorry if it looks a little confusing but I do understand it perfectly. Obviously it was me that wrote it!
I feel the quicker the format, the more harder the swings can be hence more buy ins are required. Same goes for the field size being larger. All of this has been factored in!!

Let me show you guys two examples of me using this.

1. I am looking at an MTT over on 888poker and want to know if it would be a sensible decision to play it with what bankroll I currently have. It has a buy in of $2, the Guarantee is $1000 so we are expecting around 500 runners and it is a normal speed tournament.

I first of all scroll down to 'Multi Table Tournament' as its an MTT. I scroll down to normal speed, look at 300-1000 players (we are expecting 500) and look where it says $2 (this is the stake).

This shows that I would need a minimum bankroll of $502 to play this game. Otherwise I cannot play it!

2. I am looking at a Sit and Go on Pokerstars. It has a buy in of $7, there will be 18 players and its a turbo.

I look under 'Sit N GO', look under 'Turbo Speed', look under 2-44 players and look at $7.

This shows I would need a minimum bankroll of $707 to play this otherwise I cannot play it!

I hope this explains everything as it is rather basic once you understand it!
In my own word file I have each buy in stake colour coordinated but it would take me too long to implement that here on two plus two.

As previously stated this only goes up to a bankroll of around $1500 so once I get above this stage I will create another one for $1500 - $10,000. Also due to the massive amount of numbers and hard work this took to write out there may be some calculation errors. If you notice any please let me know so I can get it fixed.

So the next step for me with this challenge now is to sign up to some new Poker sites and make use of some bonuses. I have not checked out the new sites since I had my 3 year break. I still am not a member of ACR or GGpoker.

Today I think I am going to withdraw some of that money from stars and sign up to both ACR and GGpoker. I am thinking $200 on each site. I know I could get a maximum of $1000 bonus but I am not depositing my whole roll just for a deposit bonus. There are many more bonuses I can do in the future once the roll gets bigger! I will then start playing simultaneously on Stars, ACR and GG playing all MTT's that this BRM allows. I am going to select really soft games and aim for a nice juicy ROI. I am not going for tons of volume, rather I am going to 8 table at all times and seriously focus to achieve a nice ROI!

Will update tonight with whatever I do!

but i'm sure you know the better. all the best
Thanks bro.

I did forget about this factor actually and thankfully you just reminded me! I have withdrawn $444 from Stars leaving me with $900 and I am splitting this into ACR and GG right now. I will keep playing with Stars as my bulk with some multi-table sng's being stacked in the background. I think this is necessary to smooth out the graph and variance a little and to make the game a lot more enjoyable with more frequent wins.

Thanks alot!

This is where the real fun begins! Thanks for posting your BRM strategy. I like it. It would be really tough for a winning player to go broke under those rules.

Do you use any software while you play? HUD, table organizer, etc?

Enjoyed reading the BRM guide im always interested in the topic as most ppl these days typical don't go much into detail about BRM and take an aggressive approach. I'm much different. Playing comfortably always mattered to me but by the same token getting out of micros if it means paying less rake is understandable to move up asap. It might sound a bit nitty but I use your 2-44 player normal speed 100bi as my standard for 9man turbos playing 10-12 at a clip. Additionally, moving up to 25/50 games means paying 1% more rake which is dumb.

I kind of feel like you're overcomplicating things a bit on the brm. Us it really likely you will play hypers often enough to build out the be requirements? How do you consider rebuts that are often more attractive in terms of risk reward? I'd probably make a simple table that says

Format/ field size/max allowable buyin assuming $1500 roll
Reg speed MTT/1000/$5
Turbo MTT/200/$10
Etc

I do like the suggestion of a baseline volume in 45s, 90s or 180s to smoothen the ride.

Best of luck, I'll continue following along!

Your probably right I did go a bit too far lol but I did this while I was studying before the challenge started. I spent a few weeks just preparing for this moment!

In regards to the rebuys I think the ones I know are really soft and its quite likely to make the money we can follow the normal speed MTT guide depending on field size.

For any other rebuys I have always took the buy in as equivalent to 1 entry, 1 rebuy and 1 addon. Not sure if that's how you guys would cont them?

I am definitely taking the advice about mixing some sng's in to smooth the ride! Thanks again!

At the moment I am using a very basic HUD as I don't feel its super important at these stakes just yet. Its going to be more about playing solid and picking the very juicy spots that arise from playing these soft games and less about reading deep into players.

Thanks for your feedback on my BRM. I never planned on posting it as I had been writing this out for a while outside of the challenge but considering you guys would want to know how I determine what stakes to play I guess I had to post it!

Thanks again for following!

Thanks again brother!

I think everyone has their own individual comfort level and this BRM is right about where I feel comfortable and feel the thrill of the gamble at the same time but not too much to take away the one main goal of just playing the best you can.

So guys as I have been trying to setup a new Poker account to get a bonus for the last 2 days. Americas Cardroom does not take Skrill unfortunately and I already cashed a portion out to my Skrill account. GGPoker have been taking the absolute piss. They made me verify all ID and didn't accept my documents on 3 occasions due to silly reasons. Now there is a glitch with my Cashier and I have to wait for the Cashier department to get back to me? That was yesterday, still no response even after I am spamming them endlessly!

Until that's sorted I think I am going back to my days of grinding MTT's on Party and Stars with a bunch of Stars SNG's running in the background of about an average stake of $3. I will see what MTT's I can play out of both of their schedules shortly according to my BRM.

I will let you guys know once I get some games going!

Looking to seriously play my A game seen as the stakes are going up but I am not changing anything strategy wise as the play is still expected to be shocking right up to the $22 level MTT wise I would say..

That’s probably the best route to take. I actually been mixing in some MTTs during my last sng session of the day cause they have a $7 rebuy starts 830p and I reg at 945 in time for the add on and play with 100bbs at the point and treat it like a freezeout. First is normally 1.4-1.6k with 315 players on average and been doing stars hyper turbo mtt at midnight.

Step 2 Details!!

I wanted to make this post just to make clear my intentions for the next week or so until I get a new PC.

Plan

Unfortunately this Laptop I am currently using begins overheating once I get a mass of tables from different Poker sites. It can handle as many as I want for Stars but once start throwing in some GG Tables along with my HUD it starts to get hot. This is why I have made the decision to purchase a new PC.

I am investing around $150 from the bankroll into this PC. I have a friend who is selling me a PC, keyboard, mouse and dual screen monitors all for $150 which is a bargain so I cant see why it wouldn't be a solid investment Poker wise. I know it takes a slight step back bankroll wise but as I managed to boost the bankroll up so quickly with that casino win, I think its a decision well justified.

I will be withdrawing the $150 for the PC on the 28th of this month (MAY 2020) and will update the challenge accordingly with the reflected bankroll. Hopefully I can make this amount or more between now and then to actually pay for this investment! Fingers crossed!

So I will call this time period between now and the 28th, 'STEP 2' as I am limited in how I can grind and want to stick to a routine which I will be changing once this new PC is setup. That new changed routine will then be STEP 3 and I will make a fresh plan here accordingly.

Daily Poker Routine

Step 2 will be to 12 table all GGPoker MTT's I am rolled for and the T$ builders they do as well. If anyone could give me any feedback on whether these T$ builder's are good value please let me know but I have decided to add them as they are rake free and I will always be playing games on GGPoker so winning T$ would be almost the same as winning real money seen as I will be reinvesting that money either way.

I will be adding the following with my 12 table mixture:

$1 180 Normal & Hyper and $1 90 Player Turbo
$1.50 90 Player Knockout
$1.50 45 Player Turbo (4 AT ALL TIMES)

The plan is to keep 12 tables open consistently. If a table drops then I will open whichever one is quickest to open out of those MTT SNG's mentioned. I will keep a goal of having 4, $1.50 45 player turbo's going at all times as I want to get a bit more volume in on these as you guys had suggested hopefully should smooth my runs out a little. The other games are just high value and soft games but I do understand the variance will be high and am prepared for it.

The updates on this challenge will of course change slightly. Rather than having multiple sessions it now changes to one big session with a larger amount of games and a performance number that reflects the day as a whole. I will also try my best to explain any deep runs and how I have played as a whole.

Please let me know your guys thoughts on this 12 tabling routine as I welcome any tips. The tips have been great so far and have helped ALOT!

Conclusion

So my second step of the challenge (STEP 2) will be to achieve the following:

1. Clear as much of the $600 GGPoker bonus as possible.
2. 12 Table for as many hours each day as possible.
3. Get into the steady swing of grinding with this stake increase.
4. Have a performance of 10 for as many sessions as possible, hopefully on ALL sessions.
5. Make as much profit as possible before 28/05/2020 where we start Step 3 and change to PC.

Each game day I will update the challenge on how I have made progress with each of these FIVE points.

Training

I don't update you guys with how much studying I do as I simply do too much of it! I literally watch an hour of video content before I start playing on any given day and I also spend an hour each day going through my own hand histories and playing around with calculation software to see if I am taking the right lines, making any mistakes and am not missing out on any spots.

The content I watch can be anything from final table replays on stars, videos on training sites eg 'runitonce', or just pro's playing out final tables on twitch. I feel this has helped me dramatically as I have alot of different insights on many different players strategies and I always try to pick players that are crushing at the moment like getting to major final tables. Who else would you want to learn from!

I highly recommend anyone in a similar position as me to take studying as serious as I am. I wouldn't have anywhere near the ROI I currently am achieving if I did not put the work in away from the tables!

Update for yesterday's games

So yesterday I finally got to get a session in at a higher stake for the first time in the challenge!

GGPoker have finally pulled their finger out and sorted my account out. I have now deposited $300 to make full use of the 200% bonus on offer so one of my main goals now will be to pump in some decent volume in order to clear this bonus and hopefully make a nice profit along the way.

Today I am at a family members house making most of this beautiful sunshine here in the UK while it lasts and before it turns into the consistent cold, grey, wet, muggy UK weather that we all complain about! I will be getting a few games in a bit later when I get home.

Forgot to mention in that last part of the update I did play my first 10 games yesterday!

This was due to GGPoker taking the absolute piss to set my account up meaning I only actually got started late in the evening hence the mere 10 games but oh well!

I cashed in both of my first 2 GGPoker MTT's! Both were $2.10 bounties and I managed a 12th/600+ and again 40th/600+. I almost already made one decent final table but got sucked out on for a final table stack with a 70% all in moment sadly but its a great sign of things to come! I also grinded a few MTT SNG's on stars and made my first FT! I came 5th in a $1.50 90 player knockout for around $7 I think.

Altogether it was only around $5 profit but as it was just a warm up to finally test out GGPoker, i'm more than happy with how things went!

hows GG pokers tournament player pool? I tried to test it out myself in the past but as you mentioned account verification process was little out of line by them. I think I've sent them national ID but they declined and asked me for utility bill or some bs and it didn't worth the hussle for me

I liiiike your serious approach to bankroll! How many people (including me) haven't reached their maximum because of poker variance and wrong bankroll management.
Will follow to your progress!

I have already given up with GGPoker until I get a better PC. They have quite a few decent MTT's but the tables are quite big and bulky and I find them awful to mix in with Stars tables especially playing on a laptop.

It took me 2 days to even deposit money on their site and my first batch of about 20 tournaments all messed up and got paused. I messed my whole session up by trying to fix it thinking the issues were mine but when I seen they stated 'paused' I knew it was them! I will play them eventually though due to that $600 bonus and the MTT's but they have really f**ked me over so far!

Exactly! Its just picking the spot where it doesn't ruin your bankroll but that investment is gonna multiply it by 10!

I found a great deal as my mate is selling me he's setup. We are close friends so he is basically giving it to me for $150.

23/05/2020 Step 2 Update

So guys apologies for the delay in this update. Last few days have been pretty exhausting poker wise!

I have had a bit of a frustrating past few days in trying to put into action my plan that I had posted for Step 2 previously.

My first day of grinding Stars and GGPoker went horrendously and unfortunately it was GGPoker to blame, not bad luck. I have also lost around $30 from converting currencies from GBP to USD lost during the withdrawal and depositing processes.

The Mess Up
I had registered in around $100 tournaments for the day and was right in the mix of it. I had around 10 GGPoker tables open and several Pokerstars tables going when GGPoker started having issues. All of my tournaments began timing out and I began to panic as I was already in for over $50 at the time. I tried absolutely everything thinking it was down to my laptop or internet. I had even restarted my laptop which had briefly messed up all my Stars tables as well. Eventually I found out the problem was GGPoker as all my tables began to show 'Paused' which made me sick to my stomach. Great start at the higher stakes huh!

Just when the problem began to resolve, a $50 MTT pops up that I had apparently registered in earlier? I was very pissed off at this point as I am adamant I did not register this. I am usually very careful with game selection and this is something I NEVER do. While trying to work out what happened and checking if I had any other misregistrations, another $10 hyper pops up which again i'm sure I did not register in! I may have made some errors while picking my games at the start of the session but I am usually accurate.

I was very angry and tilted but I had to compose myself as we don't yet know if this misreg could end up being very lucky. I really focused hard but got my aces cracked all in just before the money which felt sickening. Somehow I managed an 8th in the $10 hyper for around $55 which basically payed for both the misreg's but it didn't feel like a win at all!

All in all with this mess up from GGPoker and after finishing all my open tables, I ended up down around $30 which wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. I have sent an email to GGPoker regarding how disgusting my experience has been so far and I have asked for some sort of compensation so lets see how that goes!

At the end of all this I decided to call it a day as this whole start to playing GGPoker felt frustrating to the maximum. I decided to just chill with the misses and watch movies which was well needed after all that bollocks!

Conclusion
So that complete mess up was supposed to be the first day of grinding higher stakes and the first day of Step 2. Seen as it went so horribly for faults other than my own, I will not include that as the first day and unfortunately will have to count it as a $30 loss. If they do compensate me it can go towards that $30. Now that this is all over and done with, lets get on with some real grinding and sticking to what I know best, Stars!

Bankroll
So initially I started Step 2 with $1344. I lost roughly $30 converting curruncies and $30 due to the GGPoker mess up. I also had to renew my Tableninja subscription for another $10.

Bankroll now stands at $1272.45 across GGPoker, Stars and Skrill

Going Forward
I have made the decision to only play on Stars temporarily until I get my new PC sorted as the GGPoker tables are a little big and bulky and the client itself requires a fair bit of my laptop to run. There are plenty enough games on Stars for me to play so that $600 bonus will have to be put on hold for a few days. I have until the end of August to clear it anyway so there is no rush just yet!

Finally The First Official Poker Day Of Step 2!

So just to note, I had this already written out on Wordpad. I was meant to update yesterdays games yesterday but as it was quite late I just shut the laptop off once I busted the last game.

Day 1 23/04/2020

Games Played:35
Performance: 9
Starting Bankroll: $1272.45
Ending Bankroll: $1272.09

Summary

So being a little frustrated with how things have gone since the massive up I was on after Step 1, I really needed a day of solid grinding at some more reasonable stakes to let off some steam and gain back the momentum.

I focused very hard on playing my absolute A game by studying for 2 hours before starting a game and generally assessing how well I played during every 5 minute break. I would say this worked very well and even though I felt a little overwhelmed at some stages as I made a slight mistake in trying to grind way too much then necessary in order to make up for time lost, I handled the massive amount of tables pretty well and I made very little mistakes.

I didn't run very well when it mattered though but I did have a few deep runs in some MTT's which I guess did give me some good opportunities to actually double the bankroll but I just couldn't manage to run well in the later stages. I have already started making notes for new opponents and how the gameplay has changed from the $0.50 stake which to be honest, is not much at all.

By very last hand late in the evening, I glanced at the client to check whether I made or lost, I noticed that the final cash I made levelled the bankroll to almost exactly break even! Pretty crazy considering what was invested but I cannot be disappointed with that considering not running particularly hot or making any big scores. Also every tournament I play I feel I am gaining experience and learning a lot so even if I did not take any money away from the session, knowledge is power after all!

What a ****show of a day lol best thing to do is cut ur losses and just chill like u did. Take ur mind off of poker. That loss is only like 2% of ur roll so it’s nothing, just another day grinding.
