Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Posted a video but there was stuff wrong with it so took it off again. Will repost with alterations when I can do them. Not been playing much, will post progress when I have enough to report.

Allright video is on hold for a while - every time I try to make one I play like cr*p and get worse luck. Since stopping video capture I'm up about $10 and playing god-like.

On about 14k hands, graphs in 1k hands.

Current bankroll: $217.21

Ul man, keep at it. Nothing you can really do other than endure through it and not let it get to you. Just remember its easy to play well when everythings going your way, the real test and when you make alot of reciprocality $'s is durring a downswing. Gl.

^ good article, and good site. I dissagree with some stuff on there but there's so many gems its definatly worth reading.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Thanks man, good stuff as always. Gonna get some more hands in tomorrow, working all day today. Will probably be able to post 20k hands graph tomorrow so you can see what I'm moaning about. Meh its just variance but I'd like it to balance out sooner rather than later - if it continues like this for much longer I might decide my strategy simply isnt working and change tack.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Thanks man, might consider making a blog if I do this again, not gonna transfer this all over for now. The original intention of this thread was to show it can be done, and to get help and advice from people about moving up / particular hands etc.

My screename is --Fla7l1ner- on Pokerstars - I'm not often on at the moment but should be on more in the next few days as I'm not working, my girlfriend is working, and I'm waiting on someone else about my full-time job.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

The comeback was going so well, then two coolers and I'm back lower than I started.

Graph as promised:

Current bankroll: $187.67

Current situation: Downswing continues.

Current overview: Poker sucks sometimes. It just doesn't feel worth the time and effort when you play good, solid poker for 2 hours then get 2 marginal coolers and you're back where you started. Taking a break for a day or so.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Running just a little above breakeven, can't seem to get in a big +EV spot at the moment. Every time I get a big pair the flop comes really coordinated and I get raised which kinda ruins a lot of my moneymaking chances. Anyway, at least I'm up a bit since the last post.

Current bankroll: $201.64

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

I know people hate reading other people's moans about downswings so I won't bother. But this is getting ridiculus. Can't hit a flop and when I do I get coolered. Not long now til a drop to 2NL.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Had a few lucky turns (literally - letting another bigstack turn a lower FH than the one I flopped) so gradually finding my way back up. My graph looks like something you draw in geography lessons though, starting at the seabed, going up onto dry land, then through fields and eventually mountains. It's quite poetic, really.

Current bankroll: $215.53

Current mindset: Pokerstars please let me stay above $200 this time

Mini-goal: To get to 10NL ($250 br) before I hit 50,000 total hands (should be obtainable at current winrate even with downswing). Will post 50k total hands graph when it happens too.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Advice Please!!! (second paragraph)

Been playing a fair amount, still struggling to put together some decent winning sessions. I find myself getting complacent and calling off cash when I know I'm likely beat, which is frustrating and I find myself slapping myself about 10 seconds afterwards. On that not, excluding continuation bets, I have given up bluffing completely including double-barrelling etc. it's just losing me money as people just don't fold.

I've also been playing some 10PLO on another site and finding it so fishy it's funny. I'm only playing 2 tables at once and relishing getting reads on people again after so long grinding readless on 14+ tables at once just for the hourly rate. On that note I'm considering playing a mix of 10PLO and 10Nl both short-handed once I hit $250. It'l be a bit of a learning curve but I'm confident if I start with 2 tables and work up, I can get a decent winrate going. What's people's views on this? Statue26 I know your opinion is that FR is my better game at the moment, but it's just so mechanical I'm getting frustrated and bored of it... help and opinions please people? Should I be starting 5NL 6MAX and grind up to the remainder of the $250 on those tables with a view to playing the 6MAX 10NL and 10PLO tables?

All helpful advice much appreciated, thanks.

At almost 30k hands at 5NL (40k total) and really looking forwards to moving up, it's not interesting anymore.

Current bankroll: $219.05

I assume you intend on moving back down if you go as low as $200? If so a 5BI shot is pretty short to start messing around with your game at 10nl.
I think its a good idea to change if your games going stale, but 5nl is the time to do it. 3-5BI downswings are nothing, you drop 1 or 2 BI's in spots you shouldn't with teething problems or with leaks you havn't noticed and plugged in your new game and its highly likely your dropping back to 5nl before you know what hit you.

Also remember PLO has massive variance, so your going to need a huge sample berfore you can actually be sure your even profitable at the game. By all means change to 6max and plo, but I would do it a 5nl or wait untill my 10nl roll has a bit more padding.

However I've been hit back twice now taking my shot at 10nl, the last one nearly killed my roll, after I went as low as $160 from $250 so I am more cautious than most when trying to move up. The games not too different, you will have to adjust a bit though and also get used to twice as large $ swings in your br, I just think its easier to do that in a game you know rather than one your trying to pick up.

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Started 5PLO today. Started off OK but after the first 1k hands everything went downhill. I was playing fine, raising in position with good hands etc, but for the last 3k hands I just can't seem to hit a flop to save my life. I like playing running cards, and these make up almost all my raising hands because of the bigplay potential, however I'm hitting maybe 5% of flops at the moment and it's pretty soul-destroying. Also I've lost countless big pots when my nuts on the turn gets outdrawn on the river, and I can't seem to do the same myself to anyone. It's been a hard day, and according to my EV line I should be down 2 buyins more than I actually am. I also cashed my second VIP bonus for $10 but that's gone down the drain already.

I'm making a killing on Full Tilt at 10PLO, are the players just fishier there? I didn't think there would be much difference but I'm beginning to doubt whether the games require the same strategy.

Anyway enough of a rant, taking a break for a few days because my nerves can't take seeing the board pair on the river again.

Current bankroll: $215.97

Current thoughts: How do they always have it, and I can't seem to get anywhere close?

Re: Yet another rags to riches challenge

Hi all,

Sorry for the long gap in between posts - I'm going through a busy time in real-life atm so not had a chance to play much.

Since my last post things went from bad to worse in PLO. I dropped a couple of buyins more and lost a huge pot when I shoved the nut straight on the turn and a guy called with fd and flushed the river for $40. Anyway, it was all looking pretty cr*ppy until the last couple of days, when I began to get a good handle on the game.

At 5PLO about 70% of players are not bad, tight players. The rest are mega-fish who have no idea how to play. Therefore I found I obviously made the biggest profit from careful table selection and stacking the fish. It really sucks when you get drawn out on really thin or people call you down with bottom 2 pair when you are repping a straight or flush with 3 to a flush and 5 to a straight on board, but thats just the game I suppose. I guess I need to learn that quite a lot of the time, even in Omaha, people see 2 pair and just call, ignoring the board texture.

Anyway enough of a ramble, updates here:

Current bankroll: $240.82

Current outlook: Feeling more positive about PLO, nearing $10 buyin freedom.

Current thoughts: Damn PLO is swingy.
