xflixx's Grind it Up Challenge: A Blatant Ripoff xflixx's Grind it Up Challenge: A Blatant Ripoff

So, I tried doing one of these a few years ago, and sucked at it. Any claim that I will be good at updating this one would, therefore, be utterly nebulous.

Nonetheless: I started with $80, trying to see how far I can roll it. I suppose calling that a ripoff of Flix's challenge is a little misleading, since $8k isn't really a goal. But I'm copying his BRM, and his challenge inspired this, so there you have it.

~40k hands in so far, graph looks like this:

[IMG][/IMG]

You'll note that somewhat dreadful cave-in the few hundred hands. Few coolers, many tilt. Wow.

Current BR: $248

Will try and update this daily! "Try" being the operative word.

TL;DR lol. Today happened.

One of my reasons for doing this thread is to keep myself honest: to keep a journal of play day-to-day, as a reminder to not suck, track improvement, etc. It's as good a reason as any, since I don't expect anyone to actually read this bloody thing.

Which is a long way of preparing to say that I sucked hard today. Technically, mentally, everything. I had actually stopped the bleeding at one stage and made a few stacks back, then punted them right back again. It was bad. My goal for tomorrow is to be less bad.

Hands played: 4,333
Total winnings (lol): -$33
Total BR: $203.87

Some observations:
- Tilt for me is not so much about flying off the handle as entering this weird, pissed-off autopilot and stopping caring. It's tough to catch myself and quit because the process is so subconscious. I should probably do Tendler's suggestion and set an hourly alarm.
- 5NL Zoom late at night, European-time, is bat****.
- People are weirdly aggressive about 3betting their BB at this level, and too willing to punt off stacks after doing so.
- I should play shorter sessions, and in a more comfortable chair.

Now let's forget today happened.

So the day's not over yet and I'll probably do some more grinding before bed, but I'm pretty tired and wanted to update this in case I forgot/got lazy.

Fun was had today. Was pretty sick the last couple of days and couldn't really play, so it felt good to be pushing buttons again. Then this happened:

Hands played: 5859
Total winnings: $51.02
Current BR: $251.61

If these numbers seem a little off, it's because I took some stabs at $3.50 turbo rebuys while Skyping with a friend, just for the hell of it.

Relevant things:
- This thread, despite the lack of response to it, has made me feel a lot of additional pressure to perform better, which is interesting. The feeling of having to post on this and (honestly) report results means I really don't want to have a big downswing like the previous. Useful, that. It's sort of the same feeling as playing with friends: you just don't look like an idiot with someone watching.
- Started taking shots at 10NL, as per Flix's BR management. Not sure it's a great idea yet, but we'll see.
- I'll try and post hands at some point. 4tabling Zoom makes that more difficult.

First mini-session done, up a stack. Life is good. Some hands:

Should I just be jamming the river here? I think his range is pretty much nuts or air, so I didn't see the value in shoving, but that might just have been fear.

Lol at him showing up with J9o here, but meh, I guess there are plenty of overpairs in his range too. As well as random 10x with draws, this is the micros.

Today has been interesting, and very useful. After a woeful couple of days for the bankroll, I had to stop and reevaluate. My problem, which I imagine is the same as everyone's problem who's stuck at the micros, is mental game. One bad beat, and I'm punting off stacks as quickly as I can gain them, getting involved in all kinds of crazy, stupid spots out of frustration. This only ends when I can acquire the presence of mind to stop playing, which invariably takes too long.

Solution: I've started playing short, concentrated sessions. The goal of these has nothing to do with money, and has everything to do with self-discipline; if I make just one silly, ill-disciplined, or spewy move the session is a failure, regardless of results. Obviously the distinction between spewy and justifiable can be dodgy, but I'll just have to judge as best I can.

The goal is to play five "perfect" half-hour sessions in a row, in which I make no really obvious mistakes. Beating the micros is about solid, ABC play and I can do that; it just takes discipline. After five such sessions, I'll increase the time-limit, probably to 35 minutes. Hopefully, the "mental muscle" elements of concentration and discipline will strengthen and let me play for longer without going mental.

Bankroll is currently $240, with a $50 Stars reward coming soon. Unsure whether to take 10NL shots at $300 or $400. We'll see how this experiment goes first.

World Cup now, then more grinding. Gogogogo.

Feel like giving up. Turned small losing session into big losing session because I'm an absolute idiotfish who loves to punt off stacks. Never going to make progress at this rate.
