Mick, Given how wide we can flat - would you basically never 3b bluff BB v BTN min open? Only value 3b basically? and also roughly how tighter does your defending range get v a 2.5x & 3x open and do you start to 3b bluff the very bottom of it??

I am going to say fairly confidently the big fella will be 3 betting as a bluff (i.e with a polarized range).

I'm not going to go deep into my strat on a public forum. If I had no 3b bluffing range id get ripped apart.

You will have to figure out your own strategy and defending ranges, my post was to simply show we can defend wide vs min opens. When I say defend that doesn't mean just calling.

Work out how much equity you need to defend (ie pot odds). Then work out how much equity your hand has against a reasonable opening range, estimate how much of that equity you think you can realise, and if you can realise more equity than you need then it's a defend. Plus you can make them fold by 3betting. Your whole strategy will account for both options.

15.08.2014 - General Update.

Everything is pretty hectic at the moment!!

I am just finishing off renovating 5 properties that I let out to the local university. I hope to have them all done by Monday night. Then their representative will look around them and no doubt find some small issues to attend to (they are strict as hell which is good imo) but the bulk of that work will be done!!

Then we have a private let which has just become empty. It has gone on the market again but we want to spruce it up so paint it throughout, new curtain poles and that sort of thing. Hopefully will have most of that done in time to go on family holiday and will finish off the week I get back.

Poker has taken a back seat over the last week (mainly because I got a date wrong for returning one of the houses!) and I have not played a single hand.

However, I am really excited about getting back into things after my holiday! I am aiming to be back and full-on on Monday September 16th although if things go well it could be a week earlier.

Going Forward.

If anyone has opinions on this dilemma let me know....

I am going to up my hours. At the moment I get up at 0415 and play a couple of hours before work and I also play in the evening after putting my kids to bed. So my question is....

Should I change my sleep pattern and play from 1930 to 0130 (which would mean then sleeping and getting up and going straight to work) or should I leave it like it is and split it into two sessions?

One concern for splitting (like now) is that there is not a lot of action around at 0430 UK time on some sites and I expect there is better action (read = more fish) if I play the long evening session.

Another concern for splitting is I think I need to warm-up twice and just set everything up. This wastes valuable time.

A concern for the long session is burn-out but i am confident I can train to eradicate that.

Any other things you can foresee?

GL all, hope you are crushing!?

bro i recommend you just take a break and finish of your hard work and then you will have more time to focus on playing. You can still go through hand histories and discuss strategy so that you wont get rusty. But if you think you have the strength to put in the hours then i suggest you play when you feel you want to play. Have you switched sites lately? Stars has action 24/7 imo.

Yh its just a question of 6 hours at once a tnight or 4 and 2 split.
"Has" action =/= "best" action.

Good to hear from you mate, thanks for input.

I would just say play the longer session during the times with more fish, but can you really play 6 hours straight without it affecting your game? You usually play in 2 hour sessions right? If you increased your sessions by 15 minutes at a time maybe you could make this work, but increasing by hours all at once is a recipe for disaster imo. I could be wrong though

Any competent reg will compare combos of semi-bluffs to 2p/set combos ,x/r is also your worst line to take with a set (aside from xf) so you've got to be comfortable barrelling/ hope he isn't a station if you x/r this, given he's BTN opened I.e weak range either c/c or x/r is fine.

What, not sure I understand, why do you think x/r with a set is bad?

x/c is standard with A6s

Time To Up It And Go Pro...

It is time to up the game!!

As regular followers know, I have worked pretty hard since this thread/blog began. I am talking about a lot of things here of course, my family (maybe I should let my wife decide on that one), my houses, my poker, my job (not so much ) and my whole life. All of these things have progressed immensely during this time and I am really proud of myself and what I have achieved. (In fact the last ten years have been amazing for me as I was pretty well a washed up, drunken bum 10 years ago.)

The underlying theme of it all is that if you work HARD enough at something then you can improve at a rate that can really surprise you!

It is not just working hard of course but also working SMART.

Some things I learned about improving myself:-
  • Define success and what it means to you (not as easy as you might think).
  • Find out what successful people do and HOW they got successful and try to emulate them.
  • Get a mentor(s) in your field and empty them of advice.
  • Be realistic. Not just about what you WANT but about where you are right now. (Right now I am doing this... I realise my poker progress is just not good enough if I want to be pro in time to enjoy my kids growing up so I am going to do something about it. Overall I am accepting how it really is.)
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Surround yourself with people who will help you on your way (and remove the people who hold you back).
  • Learn as much as you possibly can about goal setting and habit formation (these are both massive works-in-progress for me at the moment but I am getting better all of the time!)
  • Be strong in the down times (these times will define you the most).
  • Celebrate your successes however small they seem (very, very important part of habit formation).

Ok, enough about that I am sure there will plenty more of that over the coming months!

So what am I going to do about it!?

Well a couple of weeks ago a good poker friend of mine recommended I apply to a coach to get some help. Then he proceeded to link me to a Coaching For Profits programme application and said it would be perfect for me.

Strange thing is, I applied to this guy for the same thing just under a year ago and was (rightly) rejected. This time though I felt ready and applied.

The more I thought about it the more excited I got about the prospect of not only giving my poker game a massive kick up the backside but also of the possibilities of becoming part of a team that seems so dedicated to poker improvement and general life improvement (like the stuff I mentioned above, I also have ambitions to work as a coach in personal (and poker) improvement).

As the application process progressed I begged and begged this guy to take me on (to the point I was worried about getting rejected just for being a pain in the butt!).

I got in! The moment I heard I was overjoyed. It just felt like all the hard work I have been putting in has paid off for me, like some sort of reward or karma.

This is just the beginning...

So yeah, it all moves on. Stay on board and enjoy the ride because I fully expect to be known as The Money Making Machine before you know what has hit you!!

The programme commences for me Monday September 15th (assuming Coach agrees) so I am preparing (read relaxing) for real blood, sweat and tears.

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KP.

P.S. I need to say a massive thanks to my wife for supporting me in this and to my new coach for giving me this amazing opportunity in life.
