Hello everyone,

The goal is self-explanatory. I Want to beat 10nl. So far I'm roughly breakeven after 10k hands (pre rakeback). To get better at poker and in life generally I will set a few goals for myself.

Poker:
- Finish reading Applications of No Limit Holdem & The Grinder's Manual (in 2 months time)
- Regularly read and post Hand analysis
- Read up on spots that I notice during play and need to clarify my thinking on
- Play enough volume for the rakeback bonus

Life:
- Start meditating again
- Apply for one internship per day (on average)
- Continue being disciplined with my workouts
- Increase my accounting and financial modelling knowledge
- Read a little bit more

Happy Grinding

Good luck! Just a quick note, Matthew Janda wrote a follow up to Applications called Hold em for Advanced Players: Emphasis on Tough Games. Applications has a few errors in it that the new book corrects (though to be fair to Janda, solvers/Snowie didn't exist as prevalently when Applications was written as they do now)

Thanks for the feedback. I have actually read the follow up already, I think because I found that one on scribd before i found Applications on there. However I felt like I miss a lot of the basic strategy since Holdem for Advanced Players was more like an addition/correction, as you said.

I was also wondering if I should read Play Optimal Poker/Modern Poker Theory instead, since those seem more up-to-date. Any thoughts?

If that's the book that Michael Acevedo wrote, I read it and it's pretty good

Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

First three sessions since posting didn't go that well (down 6.8$, up 9.6$, down 27.5$).
The bankroll is at 469$ (up from 400$) despite being 1,5 buy-ins down in EV/Net Won because of rakeback.

Specific things I want to work on this week:
- Preflop ranges (especially calling ranges in the BB)
- 3-Bet Sizing from the blinds and c-bet strategy

Bankroll Update

After starting out decent I’ve hit a rough patch. Barely break-even (pre-rakeback) at 10nl now. I’m 50% through the Grinder’s Manual now, but still have to do work on my preflop ranges. Pretty disappointing but at least I’m not negative at 10nl (yet) and given the rakeback my bankroll has actually grown to 630$ with still some rewards and chests unopened.

I enjoyed this video with Isaac Haxton and a Blitz-Chess Champion teaching each other their respective fields. I have only listened to the poker part and found Haxton’s explanation of why solvers (counter-intuitively) like check/raising bottom pair on the flop (some of the time) interesting.

Old way of thinking: You don’t raise because you fold out worse hands and only get called by better hands.

New way of thinking: Helps reach a certain frequency for flop raises to give villain a hard time with hands that are unhappy to face a raise (also makes him question if he should c-bet those). Generally speaking: A few medium strength hands play well in a range that is mostly polarized: You want to a variety of hands in your range after you have raised the flop – by not just having bluffs and value hands you can check the turn and often get to the river for free. Also, you get some folds from overpairs that have roughly 25% equity against you.
You can usually just check those hands when the river doesn’t change anything, but continue betting in case the turn gives a card that would turn your turn your bluffs into really strong hands.

Hand Discussion

Thought about just calling on the river given the big sizing from villain. Eventually decided to raise because I thought I could get enough value from two pairs, trips and maybe some lower flushs (rarely), however maybe just calling is better given that I lose my entire stack against the nut flush (and other higher flushes sometimes). Or I just have to fold facing the shove?
Maybe calling that and bigger sizing and raising smaller sizes. Or just fold pre…?

Fold pre unless there are mostly passive players behind you. You risk facing a squeeze and not even seeing a flop.

On the river I don't think you can just call, because we expect lot of NL10 players to be unable to release 2 pair or a set when you raise, even though the flush landing is pretty obvious. And then when they go all-in it's hard to fold because of the price you get. I would say it's more or less a cooler, but it's a consequence of a questionable preflop play.
