I'm fairly indifferent between checking and betting tbh. Benefits of betting are mergy value/protection vs what should be an extremely wide flop continuing range

I got it from home depot, I also have some natural light but yeah one light is more than enough. I like keeping my desk uncluttered so I'm not too into deskl lamps.

A Rough Week

I considered waiting for my weekly update to write about this, but writing in the blog has always felt cathartic.

On Tuesday Morning, me and my wife went to her cardiologist in NYC for her 9 month checkup. This is the norm; as I've mentioned in the past my wife has Marfan's syndrome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfan_syndrome)

There are a ton of symptons regarding Marfan's, but the biggest thing they look for is growth in the aorta, as people with Marfan's are at much higher risk for aortic dissection. Anyway, at our previous visit in January, her aortic measurement came in at 4.2cm; surgery becomes an option when it reaches 5.0 or there is significant growth. In her previous 10 years of testing, Victoria's measurement has increased .2cm from 4.0.

Come Tuesday, we get in do an echo and then see our cardiologists. We're waiting....and waiting...and waiting; and it's funny because neither of us were quite anxious, which can be my wifes calling card and we were just going over her bachelor party,

Her doctor walks in, and you don't need to be a poker player to know we're getting bad news. Her aorta has grown to 4.6cm and fairly close to 4.7cm; right on the threshold of significant growth. Obviously such a massive jump was unexpected, her aorta doubled growth from her past 10 years.

Long story short, we are looking at open heart surgery the next few months to fix her aortic valve. We're not really sure how the jump occurred and we only have guesses, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was the IVF process (no evidence of this just my gut). We are going Friday afternoon for an MRA to confirm the doctor's initial diagnosis and go from there, although she said it was a formality and that she spent so much time remeasuring just to make sure.

There are a ton of variables here, but the biggest thing is how brutal this is for my wife. She's scared to death and I am scared as well. There's a general feeling of helplessness and the best thing I can do is be there for support; but helplessness for the person you love most in this world is a **** feeling.

I'm not really sure how this will affect the wedding or honeymoon, but obviously whatever keeps her safest is prioritized. As far as recovery, she will be out a few months, but thankfully I can cover the finances.

As far as poker, I spent the past 2 days just spending time with Vic, I did play a morning session though and it did seem to uncloud my thoughts.

Anyway, we knew she would have to get the surgery eventually in life, but never thought it would be this soon. Have appreciated all the good thoughts/prayers from you guys in the past, and we could use them now.

All the best,
Jerrad

Really sorry to hear about this, man. I feel like it's not really talked about enough amongst poker players, but because of the nature of our profession and how inherently stressful it can be, it's really important to manage outside stress well and do what we can do have a positive mind frame. Good on ya for mostly spending time with her, really it's the most important thing. Will send love/positive vibes your way <3

Hey man, very good post, couldn't agree more. I think this relates well to a lot of people. It's very easy to have a 'why me' mindset when bad things like this; but both of us are cognizant of how blessed we were. This year has been so wonderful for us that this is just a speed bump in the road.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We went back to NYC last night for the MRA, test took her about an hour; will hear back from cardiologist on Monday and go from there.

My sleep schedule is very crazy right now, I did play about 2 hours at midnight til 2 am. Studied quite a bit. Studying end has been awesome for me but volume is still lacking which I think is quite funny since I've just been massively heatering.

I did get a quick HU match at 1k against the legend Dan Zack from LATB (or at least 95% sure it was him)

1.) Interesting decision points here, I think turn check is probably a small mistake but nothing too crazy, I think river jam is also far superior than call

Week 42: 10/14-10/20

1.) 0 mins of meditation

2.) 0 mins of Yoga

3.) 22.28 hours dedicated to Poker Yearly Goal:1259.93/2200

Poker has not been a big priority for me lately as I've mostly been spending time with my wife. The massive heater I was on did die down a bit, but it's been a fairly ridiculous run where I had won 18 of my last 20 days played.

On Sunday, my wife had her work event at the childrens hospital she worked at so I helped volunteer there and it was quite fun, the kids loved it too.

Monday from Hell

Victoria got an MRA scan on Friday so we were looking to hear back sometimes Monday. I get up at 9AM for coaching, do that. Let the cleaning ladies we just hired to clean downstairs, and then charge my phone at 10:30 and plan to play for 1.5 hours til they're done.

At around 11:45, my office door is flung open and my brother-in-law is in the door way asking why I haven't answered my phone. Apparently, my wife got a call at 10:45 that her MRA showed aortic dissection and that she may need to get emergency CT scan followed by surgery.

I drive to NYC (absolutely hate driving in the city btw) as fast as I can, get there, she's ofc freaked out. CT scan ends up showing that the dissection was an 'artifact' or faked out so there was no aortic dissection. However, her cardiologist has recommended immediate elective surgery, so that's what we're doing.

Within next 3 weeks she should be getting the heart surgery. She's going to almost certainly cancel her bridal shower and good chance I'll have to cancel my bachelor party, but she would hopefully be mostly recovered by the wedding.

Overall, this sucks pretty hard but after this surgery we won't have the worry RE: her aorta anymore. I will also probably be game selecting a bit more given she'll be out of work a few months. Will know surgery date within next few days.

Yeah, I think we'll both be manageable until the actual time of the surgery, but all in all I think we're doing ok.

The 98o is HU and IP; However,I haven't really put any work in HU but seems like fine defend given ranges, I could be wrong though

Lost 6k today for actually my worst day of the year, (more of a credit to how good I've ran this year) pretty much all at 2k. Happy with how I played, just took a few tough ones and don't seem too bothered about it either which is also a nice feeling considering everything going on!
