As you can see, in April 2013, I thought I was much better at poker than I was. I still suck relative to a lot of 2p2ers but I suck less than I did now. Part of what helped me was moving from my former stake at which I'd broken even/was a 1-2bb winner at 25NL and 50NL zoom to a stake with coaching. I had two main problems with my game which are now mostly patched - firstly, my preflop game was lacking in a way which I didn't realise; and secondly, I was overly relying on unexploitability maths in spots where there were many big exploitable adjustments that I was missing.

I made Supernova last year, but at significant cost - in a last minute scramble for VPPs (I had 38k to go at the start of December), and because I'd been doing decently well at 100 zoom, my backer and I agreed that I would mix in some 200 zoom on December 30 and 31:

That actually put a significant dent in my yearly results:

With that said, I'm very happy with my 100NL zoom results so far and I'll be hoping to take another shot at 200 in late January/early February:

My plans for this year depend a lot on what happens after I finish uni. I'm looking for a 2017 training contract at a law firm, with a training contract sponsored by the firm, starting in 2016. If that happens, and poker results hold up, I'm likely to take a year out to play poker and travel. If I don't have an offer, I'm going to get a job to strengthen my CV and reapply the next year - assuming I don't get a 2.2 or worse, the primary weakness of my CV at the moment is that I have precious little paid employment experience - and for this reason, office-based work would be ideal.

Goals from 2014 (easier one/hopeful/pipe dream):

Profit (pre-chop with staker): $2500/$5000/$10000 [around 8k including rb]
Number of hands: 360k/500k/700k
Limit: 50NL/100NL/200NL
Weight: 15st/14st/13st [18st]
Expected degree classification: 2.1/first [sort of on the border between the two]

Goals for 2015:

Get a training contract
Get a first

Assuming I don't play for a living at any point (will add goals if I do):

400k hands
Post-rb profit: 10k/15k/20k
Limit with a winrate of at least 0.5bb/100 pre-RB: 200NL/500NL/higher

I'm also going to be mixing in some volume on softer sites.

GL in 2015 everyone!

For someone who has said in the past that he doesn't play poker for the money, I'm just wondering why you scrambled in the last few days of 2014 to reach Supernova?

Anyway, good luck in 2015!

In.

Well done for reaching SN for 2014 and hope 2015 works out well for you.

Out of interest, what differences did you find between 25-200nlz? And were there any major adjustments you had to make for the respective pools?

Good luck Sir

I don't know what an articling student is - if my guess that it's a student who submits papers to journals, either as the primary part of their course or for fun, then no. The short answer to the latter question is practice law - though the stuff I've enjoyed studying most that you're likely to work with as a commercial solicitor is intellectual property and competition law, the training contract's structure will give me a chance to see a number of divisions because clearly, studying the prominent issues among academics doesn't necessarily reflect one's day-to-day experience, especially given the solicitor role traditionally contains little to no advocacy work.

Ultimately, while I don't play poker for the money, it is still a motivator. If I didn't enjoy playing poker recreationally I'd stop, despite the fact that it's nice supplementary income, even being staked. The same goes for producing training videos and coaching - I love doing those things, hence actively pursuing them, and it's a nice bonus that I can earn money for them.

There aren't big differences in the number of fish, the main thing is that the regs get gradually less ******ed and at 200, it seems most regs are starting to think about their sizing on a more complex level, and the main 50NL/100NL thing of regs overfolding in a whole bunch of spots and just playing really poorly range-wise tends to have addressed itself somewhat. This is a limited impression though.

Maybe here in Canada we have a bit of a different system. Near the end of law school, students get to become "articling students" They get to do rotations through the different practice groups with the eventual goal of becoming an associate. So seems to be same thing just different terminology.
