[Study progress: Range-based thinking on the Udemy course]

I watched the "Range-based thinking" part of the course. It describes concepts I already knew, including the range funnel by Alec Torreli. However, it did have 2 sections where it analyzed specific hands, and tried to narrow down the opponent's range using Equilab, which was helpful. I still would need to practice hand reading a lot more, although I am not entirely sure how to do that.

[Play progress: The new stakes level / I need a stop loss point to back down]

My new stakes level of play is costing me a lot! I have been playing a few $5.50 tournaments, instead of $2.20s that I was playing before. As a result, during downswings, my bankroll is going down a lot more than previously. Seeing my bankroll go down makes me very nervous. I have now lost $80! I think I may need to go back down one level at some point. I need to set a stop loss point, from which I will turn back down to my previous Game plan, and play lower stakes tournaments again.

Buy a ton of hand histories and filter for those that go to showdown. Then replay those hands and practice putting the players on ranges. Once it gets to showdown you will see if you are right.

Just listened to a podcast yesterday with Jonathan Little says that to make money you have to:

1: Pick a game you can beat
2: Play it a lot
3: Exercise proper bankroll

Seems maybe you aren’t following the last one.

Thanks, CLF90. That's a great idea. I should try that!

I was watching the same video at the same time. I am exercising proper bankroll management. My issue is, I have just moved up stakes, so the games are a little tougher, and my downswings are bigger in $. But I love JL and your comment. Thanks!

[Session results]

Today I played 9 games, which included 2x$5.50 MicroMillions tours. I made 2 deep runs, one in the MicroMillions $1.10, and one in the Bounty Builder $1.10. I cashed little, but this was the best run I've had in the last 4 days.

[Play review]

I watched a Hand History review of a $3 tournament with Alex 'Assassinato' Fitzegrald.
I realized that I'm playing a very basic default strategy, where:
  1. I always limp behind limpers with hands that cannot raise
  2. I never 3-bet with anything other than premium hands, cos when I do, many people call anyway
  3. I never isolate, cos when I do, many people call anyway
  4. I don't 3-bet suited connectors from position when I probably could
I am not sure how to go from here

In summary, my issues are with limping behind, 3-betting, and isolating.

Why do you think this is bad? What do you think you should be doing with hands that cannot raise?

Why do you think this is bad? Why would you 3b with hands that need a lot of help from the board when you are 100% getting called in multiple spots?

The optimal way to study/play poker is:

- Learn what is correct to do

- Observe what your opponents are doing that derivate from what is correct to do

- Figure out if a derivation from your play would yield better results than the baseline of "doing what is correct to do"

[Study material: Recovering from a big downswing]

I am on a big downswing of $140, and this material is helping me right now.

[Session results + Study notes]

Today I've been trying to come back from a massive string of losses, where my bankroll dwindled down $150. I had to re-deposit another $43, since I had taken most of my money out of my Stars account.

Before playing, I studied "The Poker Athlete" by Adam Carmichael for a little while, and then revised my Postflop strategy by studying JL's "Postflop fundamentals" masterclass.

I played a total of 8 games, 4 which were the free Power pass tournaments, and I am up $12 in total. However, luck was not on my side in many situations! I kept getting outdrawn in all games, and lost tragically in the last one!

I made it to the Final Table Bubble in the $1.10 Bounty builder, finishing as the bubble boy, while I knocked out 11 players! However, in the last hand, after 5:30 hours of play, I went all in on the turn with KK, but lost to a random 96o, which hit a straight on the river, leaving me 10th!

On one hand, getting that place gave me a great boost of confidence, but I am extremely sad I lost in that sick way. Live to fight another day!

Today I had a breakeven day. I played a total of 5 games. I started the day with $54, and ended with $52.39, by cashing in a $3.30 Bounty builder. All in all, ok.

A disastrous day for poker. I played 9 games and lost $15. I started ok, but for the last half of the playing time, I was feeling hungry, tired and dizzy. All that made me feel impatient and making bad decisions at the tables. Hopefully, I ordered some pizza to recover. Never play poker hungry!

[Session results: A good place]

New session started when I received a notification on my mobile for the first time from PokerStars, that a $1.10 Bounty builder tour was starting. It was late at night and I was in bed, about to sleep. I couldn't fall asleep so I thought I should play this from my mobile. As it went well, I got up to play this tournament from my desktop computer.

5 hours later, I ended up coming 21st of 1911, and cashed $13.89. The last hand was annoying, as I went all in with JJ to be called by AJo from the player who was calling with random hands, and he hit 2 As on the flop and turn to bust me out.

All in all, an ok session though.

[Session results: Another Final table bubble finish]

This morning I played only 1 game, but made it very deep. In the Bounty builder $1.65 I came 16 of 1071, and cashed $13.67. My bankroll is now at $60, which is a net of $28 since I re-deposited. In the last hand I went all in from UTG with AQs with a stack of about 20xBB, to be quickly called by a player in MP with AKo, who held and busted me out. I regret doing that, but all in all, things are good.

[Session results: Zoom cash]

Today I started playing a bit of 2NL Zoom cash poker, 2 tables at a time. This is the fifrst time I ever played Zoom cash. I made $5.55 in 2h49m of play, and after 1,111 hands, which seems reasonable and like I am winning that level. I am excited to see where this could go!

Today I played only 1 tournament and a tiny bit of Zoom cash. The tournament was a Bounty builder $1.65. I cashed a little and also got a $2 Bonus from Pokerstars rakes. All in all, a normal day.

Nice, I would recommend cash over MTTs for learning poker. It’s good to homogenize the learning environment, cash is always 100bb+. Tournaments preflop strategy is completely different depending on stack depth.
You need volume especially post flop play and zoom cash is the way to get that.

[Study progress: New topics to study: Turn strategy and River strategy]

I've just realized I hadn't worked on either my Turn or River strategy! So, I found material to study for both of these topics:
  • Turn strategy
    • Checks
    • Turn C-bets
    • Delayed C-bets
  • River strategy
    • Bluffing rivers with bricked draws
    • Value betting rivers
    • Calling rivers
    • Bluff-catching rivers

I found the material for the first part in the video "Mastering Turn strategy" by Johnathan Little: https://www.youtube.com/live/qYLi3tG_YLI?feature=share

[Study progress]

This morning I explored the FREE material on Pokercoaching.com. I studied the course "Mastering the fundamentals", and specifically Postflop play, and Turn and River Strategy. It is very difficult but I am trying!

I also downloaded the PokerCoaching App, to have a look at it.

I played a short 2NL Zoom session in the morning and broke even. I still find it very hard since I am used to tournaments, and also there are all those things I studied running inside my head which I have to apply but I don't have the time to. I really cannot keep up, although I am trying.

Can you Post a few hands and your thought process?
Also I’m curious does Jonathan Little say what games he is playing these days or publicize his ACR screen name so you can see his results? as an American, I’m skeptical of any training content produced by Americans because we just don’t have reliable access to stars which is the hardest games are being played, so there are very few guys qualified either stateside or abroad to be teaching poker — game moves fast.
