Hey folks.

Around 2 years ago, I got sick of playing play money games and wanted to play some real money games online. However, my wife wasn't too thrilled about using our money for such things since it could be used for other things (like paying bills for example). So my challenge was to build a bankroll from nothing.

I started with one site (PokerTime) that gave a free bankroll of $10 to start and went from there. I now have a total bankroll of around $300 - $350 dollars.

Basically, I just practiced pretty solid bankroll management plus the occasional freeroll thrown in. A few months ago, I then pretty much dumped my bankroll (at the time $150) from PokerTime and put it equally across the 3 big sites (Stars, Tilt, Party). By continuing solid bankroll mgmt and utilizing other means (rakeback/promotions on Tilt)...my current bankroll has doubled.

If you are going to be doing this, you need to try to practice solid bankroll management (a couple of links below outline this really well). Also, sign up with a rakeback site before you sign up with a poker site. There are several reputable ones out there to use.

Here are the links you may want to look at with regards to bankroll in case you have any confusion about it.

I guess my only real plan is to just continue to build my bankroll and, maybe someday, be able to use poker as a form of supplemental income...or be able to satellite my way into a major B&M tournament.

Let's just say it is a morals/ethics thing with regards to gambling. Besides, I didn't mind the challenge...forces you to pay attention to aspects to your game since you can't afford to go bust.

I should have mentioned that I use each of the three sites for different purposes.

1. I use FullTilt for full ring cash games...mostly Rush poker since I can get a lot of hands in a short period of time (great for rakeback).

2. I use my money on Pokerstars for SNGs. This is an important skill to get down if you want to be able to satellite into tournaments (like, for example, this year I satellited into a low buy-in SCOOP event and actually cashed in it...it was a min cash...but I got 5X my original investment).

3. My account on Party is mostly just for working on certain aspects like NL 6-max/Omaha 8s or something like that. I don't play on it as often as I should.
