turned my friday monster sesh into basically breakeven over the two days. so tough and tilting...needless to say Im done for the day....but still dont feel great....other than going home to my awesome kids and family (that should be enough right there) how do you deal with it...cause after they go to bed..I sit up and stew over the results that day...even though I keep telling myself ..variance...look at your hourly (still at 25 BB/hr) youll be fine....
thanks!
@theProdigy93 said it well, and I'll be glad to add my 2cents.
@bmoney, u stewing over ur big losses shows how much u care. Just remember that horrible feeling when u play, so u do ur best not to feel like that as often.
Of course losing is gonna happen, but u if do ur best while playing u can somewhat control it. My advice is don't play when not in the right frame of mind, or if u feel ur playing bad/tilted. This will help manage those losses.
As far for handling the big losing sessions, u said it best. Trust ur hourly!! That's why it's so important to keep accurate stats. Once u come to the realization that ur hourly says $"X" / hr, and ur content w that dollar amount; then look bigger picture. If ur a winning player w a great skill set; then don't panic. In poker, no one can win them all, it's all about the long term and putting in volume. You just hv to train ur brain to think positively, and trust your hourly.
U r not alone in these feelings of despair. After 15yrs of playing, I too struggle w this. I hate to lose. I'm ultra competitive to a fault, and I hate losing! So while I'm playing, I try my very hardest to play EVERY hand the best I can play it. For instance; How can I get max value? Does this person ever bluff? Will he think an overbet is fishy or nuts? How does he perceive me? If I check turn will he be more apt to call river? Do I use my tight image to bluff in this spot? Does this person know I'm raising light in late position? Etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
I'm always trying my hardest to make money! Some are in the poker room hopin to win, but not trying their best to win. I'm there to outwork and outplay everyone. I know I want it more than anyone. I want to do everything I can to set myself up for a W. A slip up here and there adds up quick. I'm still upset at the $50 river call I made yesterday when I shd hv folded. My weakness of never being satisfied, I guess can also be my strength in wanting to succeed. Example, I win in a session and the $50 bad call is one thing I can't get out of my mind on the drive home. I'm thinking damn, I shd hv $50 more right now.
It worth saying, if ur playing gd; then u shdnt be mad at yourself. In this game, one can play perfectly and still lose sometimes. I.e. AA<KK. If ur playing poorly, review and work to correct your mistakes. Don't continue to play if not playing optimal!
I know some will take breaks when bad runs are happening, but for me, I can't do that. I just stew more and longer.
Moreso, poker is my job, and I can't make money sitting around disgruntled. For me, I hv to get back at it and just trust in my skills and my hourly. Thus, the more I play, the more I make in the long run. Only way to deal with the bad, is WIN! Winning cures everything.
Trust me, I know the feeling all to well. The day I lost $520ish and then followed it up w 2 more losing days was painful. To put in 20 hours during that time and lose was not fun. Fortunately, I got past that and booked some solids since then. I realize though these bad runs will happen again and again all throughout 2017, but I'll keep on preserving and pushing through again and again. Why? Because I believe in my skill set, and know I'm a long term winning player. My hourly says so.
So the more adversity that happens, the more u start to get acclimated to the swings.
I still remember back in 2003 the first time I lost $1k in the poker room playing 2/5, I was crushed. But since then, it's happened many of times. If u want to win in the long run, u hv to be willing to accept the short term losses.
The best players at the tables are the ones who lose and still keep their composure playing gd poker. Say no to tilt, and ALWAYS PLAY EVERY HAND THE BEST YOU CAN POSSIBLY PLAY IT!
Life is short, have fun and make the most of every situation. <--- Easier said than done.
