Shellys' 6max Zoom Ascent
HI FRIENDS.
I'm starting this thread as a place to create poker goals, chart my progress, receive advice/criticism, post hands for fun/strat/ridicule, and because PGC is bloody awesome of course.
I deposited 50BI to play 10NLz and this is how I've done so far.
It's been a super humbling experience. Whilst there was some clear runbad in the opening 15k hands I also have to say that I've probably spewed off a bare minimum 7 or 8 BIs. And that's me being quite generous to myself...
The games are so much more aggro than they were in 2015 when I last played this limit semi-seriously. Back then I crushed by playing very TAG-ABC, making tight-folds in marginal spots, and just generally keeping it hyper-simple and printing against the fish and the spewers.
This time around I haven't adjusted well at all to the evolution of the games, and way too often the devil inside rises and a small innocuous spot with an easy C/F at some point ends up with a large stack going to my opponent.
I back myself and my ability though and feel I possess a solid gameplan to produce tidier results moving forwards. More than anything it's just a case of simplifying and preventing those outrageous spews. If I had done that so far I'd have a lovely winrate... Enjoying the process a great deal though and super-excited to see what the near future brings.
-----
H1 - Biggest winner so far. Shexy turn!
H2 - Their hand seems pretty faceup so I like the CRAI.
H3 - Nice flop!
H4 - Freeeerolllllllll...
H5 - Biggest loser. I don't completely hate the flop, but turn is just aids for what I'm repping. I'd almost always c/c or bet small there. Deserved to get snapped off by the reg.
H6 - Tight-opener with a low f to 3b and a low 4b+. I'd been 3betting him all night and showing the nizzles but I'm not sure about this, firstly because he's UTG but more specifically my turn play. As played I think we have to jam river for value. Better idea might just be to let it go PF when he's in EP or MP and save ourselves 170bb...
H7 - Opener seemed very tight, albeit over a small sample. I actually don't completely hate this but the river is bad. I can bet smaller and achieve the same objective.
H8 - Gross but never folding without some super-sick read.
H9 - Pure spew.
H10 - Not sure about this against a reg. I'm thinking we might be able to find a fold with the 3rd nuts here? Can't really see what bluffs/worse vbets they can have.
H11 - This is another spot where I'm allowing the increased regginess and aggression of the games to make me think I can induce folds in spots where 10NL guys are rarely releasing overpairs. His flop 3b-jam was lightening quick, so quick in fact that I convinced myself the reg had to be drawing. He couldn't possibly act this quickly on a board that smashes my range with one of the overpairs...
H12 - This is shameful. Several times this session the reg had quickly 4b-jammed over a 3b so, without giving it enough thought, I decided to call it off. With hindsight 66 is just too weak as he was prob making this 4b-jam with the type of hands he had, maybe JJ-88.

I'm going to drop by later and set some goals for the coming week.
Thankyou for reading, Shelly.

Hi, I can see some very simple mistakes in these hands, and I would try to work on them if you want to do better.
H3. I would x Turn here for sure, you block so much of his calling range.
H5. is a fold pre to this 3bet. We xant call very wide OOP. I would also just x/f flop vs this sizing, your backdooes arent great. Just gice up turn with this.
H6. Extremely loose pre, especially vs tight opener and low f3b. Flop is ok, Turn is just spew, this hand is not a great barrel imo. I would probably block bet the river also, but jam is not too bad.
H7. Not sure, but might be a fold pre. Once he cbets 3 ways I wouldnt go crazy on this flop, just fold without bdfd. Give up turn with this combo, you have pretty little equity vs his range, and river is ok actually, but i would like a smaller bet with ur sets too.
H9. Fold pre again, ur probably calling way too muh OOP. Probably just x/f turn, raising is not bad if you think he bets TT-KK, but always give up river.
H10. wp, but consider folding vs some ppl
H11. I see what ur doing, but trying to get ppl off overpairs here is too ambitious imo, i would just x/c, x,f turns.
H12. 66 is almost never a 3bet from bb. I would call this jam with TT+ probably vs this guy.

Thankyou for taking the time to offer input. I agree with most of what you say.
Where I disagree or would like to add further comment.
H3 - If we check turn can we still get stacks? Maybe it's a perspective leak for me to always be thinking about how I can get stacks, as opposed to how I can get max value which may not be the same as getting the stack?
H5 - Whilst default should be to fold to 3b OOP, stacks are deeper than initial BI and against certain players we can surely defend some SC type hands? Whether this was OK for the situation I don't know.
H9 - Agree totally. This was from very early on in the graph above and I have tidied my ranges a good deal since then.
H12 - I don't think we should never 3b 66 here. There's situations, such as against a decent aggressive reg with a reasonable f to 3b, where we are prob doing better trying to take it down PF rather than be forced to fold on a lot of flops, and struggling to get paid OOP when we do actually hit our monster. It also seems like having some of the lower/mid PP in our 3b range gives us more board coverage in 3b pots, although there's a risk that concept is largely irrelevant this low down.

H3. Think you rarerly get called 3 streets by a K, which you already block, and you will stack a J anyways, so i think its better to allow him to bluff hands such as AQ/AT, lower flushes. Vs some opponents just betting is better though.
H5. yes, you should call wider, but this is the bottom of your opening range and a pretty bad hand in this situation.
H12. Ok, might be a low freq 3bet in a solver, but i prefer just calling this. I could see a 3bet vs BTN being ok, though i still dont do it. Board coverage is irrelevant at 10z, especially with such a huge pool, villains will never exploit you in these situations

Goals for Mon 6/8/18
[ ] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
[ ] 5+hrs total grind 10NLz

I've not got a workout to do tomorrow (rest day) and minimal chores and distractions so would like to get ahead of pace for the weekly volume goal.
Plan is to hit it hard the next three days, have a more chilled out Thursday, then go hard again over the coming weekend to take advantage of the softer games.
Let's go.

Cheers man.
They're way more aggressive, mainly 3betting PF happens so much more than it used to @ 10NLz. The pool is much reggier than it ever was before. So much for rb decimation leading to softer games...
In response to the 3bs, recs and fish limp a much more varied range so you have to be careful with isos because they can limp some fairly clear open hands and you find yourself value-owning yourself.

Ye I agree with you on the KJ hand. I think I've actually made a lot of punts since starting back by betting too hard with monsters.
The T8dd I think I agree.
Still not totally sure we should never 3b 66 there, but I agree it should be somewhat of a rarity at these stakes as board-coverage just isn't a factor worth considering.
Once again thanks for your input, it really is appreciated!
That would be awesome Lucas, please do!
Cheers dude.

Goals for Mon 6/8/18
[X] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
Spent 43mins adding a table-averages box, then creating a popup with cbet stats in 3b+ pots.
[X] 5+hrs total grind 10NLz
Pretty sure I meant to set this goal as 6hrs, not 5...played for 6hrs 14mins in total.
Today was quite tough. Couldn't get much going all day but lost stacks in stupid spots a few times. Don't think I played far below my top level. There was a few little spews here and there but nothing outrageous.
Don't know how much I lost as I'm not checking results until the week is done, but I'm hoping that things turn around in the near future as the longer I go without posting some semi-reasonable results at these stakes the more I'll start to doubt myself.
-----
H1 - Was going to c/f river against the rec and then thought about the odds and decided to call. I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine that once every 4 times a rec will be making this bet as an uncommitted bluff with a missed FD, or just spazzing with T9 or something.

H1 - Slight overbet. Not sure how good or bad but it worked out here. Maybe this bet folds out their AQ/QJ type hands so there's a chance this is less profitable against their range than something like 2/3?

H4 - This reg loves a flop C/R but I don't think this is a good spot for them because, even though I've been cbetting too much in general (toned it down last few sessions) this is a board where I'm never betting without something.

H7 - Unsure whether I should even flat pre here? I would've folded without the second flat. MP has normal stats over a tiny 14 hand sample. Board runout is golden (or so I thought) but I semi-considered just c/c river, however, it seems like QQ-TT and poss even occasional AA-KK could show up here, and with the odds they'd surely have a hard time folding.

Goals for Wed 8/8/18
[ ] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
[ ] 5+hrs total grind 10NLz
Ended up grinding for longer than I intended tonight as the games were so good I couldn't pull myself away. Glad I did because I ran very well. Not sure how much I made but it's definitely something.
-----
H1 - No idea how good or bad this against a player who showed up today with reggy looking stats. Cbet to fold out all low pp, barrel to fold out some single pairs no draw. River bluff is pretty sketchy, I think my sizing is prob awful. Their call doesn't seem too bad with Kd?

H6 - Worst hand of the day against a player with laggy stats over a very small sample. Obv this is a board where it would be mental to bluff your AK vs what is effectively a rando with a boat. I've folded so many times in this situation lately that I levelled myself into calling hoping that the rec wouldn't understand how silly it would be to bluff.

I'm taking tomorrow off from grinding to recharge my batteries ready for the weekend. Not played much over the weekend since starting back but obv that's where the money is so hoping for a big one. Over halfway towards my volume goal for the week.
Got a squash league match in the morning then circuit training with my bro in the evening so wouldn't have had loads of time for poker anyway.
-----
Goals for Thu 9/8/18
[ ] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
-----
Had a nice chilled day off, although I had a squash match this morning and a somewhat traumatic endurance-based circuit-training session this evening. Exercise is good stress though, it's a small amount of time in hell in return for a much greater amount of time in peace.
Need to average just over 4hrs grind a day over next three days to hit my volume goal for the week. Very doable. Sadly I won't be able to put in much more than the minimum requirement as I've got quite a few commitments this weekend, but at some point in the near future I'll be looking to put in a monster weekend grind to (hopefully) give me a big boost towards 25NLz. (**** 16NL!)
Gona go chill on sofa with netflix now and watch some films. Keep seeing zero dark thirty in my recommended. Have no idea what it's about but the name intrigues me so I'll watch it blind.
-----
Goals for Fri 10/8/18
[ ] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
[ ] 4.5+hrs total grind 10NLz
Maybe I'll check that Zero Dark Thirty out another time but, from the first minute and the running length, I'm going to assume it's one you need to be ready to see.
Goals for Fri 10/8/18
[X] 30+mins implementing HUD improvements
Did the 30mins exact. Created a new popup with F to Cbets in 3b+ pots, but was super tilting as towards the end of that I realised I'd put a bunch of the wrong stats in so will have to go back and rectify next time.
[F] 4.5+hrs total grind 10NLz
Only managed to put in 1hr 46mins.

[F] 4.5+hrs total grind 10NLz

Super frustrated at not being able to grind the hours I'd intended to. I car-share with my sister-in-law who works shifts at a hospice. My parents asked if I could drop her off and pick her up today so that I could give them a lift from their house in the sticks to the train station, and then back again this evening. I agreed and the plan was for them to be back at home by the time I went to get my sister-in-law from work, but when I eventually got frustrated at waiting for their call so rang them instead, I hear blaring music in the background and realise they're still on the piss in Manchester... when they're supposed to be at the station so I can take them home, go get my sister-in-law, and then come home and grind the rest of the night.
So I go to pick up my sister-in-law and end up having to wait outside her work for an extra half hour as that's the nature of her job, then when i've done that I go to the station to get my pisshead parents and end up having to give their pisshead mates a lift to a town miles away. And to make matters worse we have to stop at one point because somebody's bladder is about to explode...
Now it's half 11 (should've been back home over two hours ago) and I need to be up for a squash league match at 7:20 tomorrow morning. Obviously if I knew I was going to get ****ed about today I would've taken it as my off day instead of yesterday. Now my volume goal is going to be tough to hit.

Goals for Sat 11/8/18
[ ] 6+hrs total grind
Welcome aboard dude!
Cheers man.
The Qh on the turn is a difficult one because are we calling turn and folding when they shove river? And if they're barrelling AK with one heart, that's an easy bluff for even a timid player to make.
3/4 on the river overbet I agree 100%. I got over excited and shot my load.
-----
Had a long, solid grind today. Wanted to put a big one in to give myself a shot at hitting the weekly goal. Got commitments tomorrow so won't be able to play for so long, but only <4hrs from hitting the 30hr goal now.
Feel like today is by far the best I've played during this current run at the limit. I'm starting to adapt to the games and my confidence is growing. Range construction was on point all day. Don't think I made a great deal of $ but I definitely profited on the day.
-----
H1 - Is it a mistake to 3b-jam the flop here? They'll have such a low SPR if I call that it seemed like they would stop bluffing vs a flat, but maybe I under-estimate the ability of fish to spew?
H2 - Can't imagine a hand I beat here vs a rando.
H3 - Tight player over just 19 hands here. How's my bluff? The turn sizing from them feels so much like a pp 88-JJ.
H4 - Not the best river. Not sure if I should be v-betting here? Seems pretty thin at this point.
H5 - Not sure about my bet sizings here. When they slow down it seems like we're trying to get value from JJ or AK (occasionally AJ?) can't see them doing this with AA-KK or AQ.
H6 - This seems a bit spewy and we obv puke when they call with two-pair. I think when it comes to bluffing on later streets and being sure in what I'm doing / knowing when I shouldn't be doing stuff, I'm lacking confidence . I mean, it could be decent but I truly have no idea.
H7 - Was so ****ing happy to win this @ sd.
H8 - Rando. Should we be folding here? That's some raise right there. Not having the K prob makes it closer to a call, but even so I just don't think we can without a read that it's some complete fun-player who can do this with AQ. If stacks are shallower I prob sigh and call then note when they have a set/AA.
-----
Forgot to mention I played the 10k weekly freeroll and busted KK<99, so that goal is complete. The 10ks seem decent value tbh, the 5ks are aids though.
Plan for tomorrow is to just finish off the goals and then relax. Got a squash league match in the morning then picking my uncle up from manc airport in the afternoon so I don't have loads of time for poker anyway. Just happy with the effort today that's brought me close to hitting the targets.
Will be looking at my graph for the week when I'm done tomorrow and posting it in here. I'm pretty sure I've made a decent amount but obviously I'll try not to be disappointed if it's less than I'm imagining. The progress in ability I can tell I'm making is what matters.

H1 - KQs Your flop cbet is large, you can bet smaller. I'd flat his flop raise too it's very unlikely he calls when you jam
H3 - When unbalanced micro regs bet so small on turn it shows they're not afraid of rivers and will have boats a decent amount, just something to keep in mind. They'll also have badly played 99's etc
H8 - Folding this deep vs unknown is fine imo

Settled in to grind just but the stars servers started spazzing. A bit disappointed but not surprised. At least when this happened back in the day there were twice as many people online and we weren't paying through the eyeballs for the privilege.
Only played for 10mins and lost a BI and a half...
-----
H1 - Aggro-reg opener. 3b is standard. Reg cold-calls bb. I actually think river is c/f because we only beat AK or AQ of spades, and that's presuming they bet/bet when we check which certainly isn't close to a guarantee. Actually think there's a lot of options for me here and I picked the worst one.

Cheers man.
I've been using a mix between 1/3 and 2/3 in 3bp. Not quite sure why I went 2/3 there. Also think there's a bunch of spots since starting at the level where I've punted hard by shooting my load way too early.

Slightly disappointed to miss out on a couple of goals, but there were some unavoidable disruptions to my productivity that won't be a regular occurrence. I'm also re-adjusting to having a busy schedule (I have goals outside of poker too, mainly fitness and nutrition based) and learning how to utilise my time better, plus building poker stamina back, so I know it will be better in the coming weeks.
Graph for Mon 6/8/18 to Sun 12/8/18

As I said yesterday, I don't want to be too disappointed with yet more weak results. I think I've tidied my game up a good deal since last Monday and am feeling more and more confident by the day. Having this thread and receiving advice from more experienced players is definitely helping and I'm sure the results will start to look more positive soon.

Had a really ****ty day today. I've had an air of sadness choking me for most of it. I'm someone who suffers with mental-health issues and today has been a bit of a dark one. It's not helped by an incident yesterday where I stupidly bumped somebody's parked car in my street and scratched their rear bumper. Left a note because I'm not scum but found out early today it's going to cost me around £100. Doesn't sound like much but for me that's a lot of money and it's a terrible time to make such a mistake as I'm not flush at the moment + my own car is overdue a full-service. I was actually making a phone call as I pulled out so it's fully my fault for lack of focus.
Pokerwise I did HUD work for 24mins and played for 55mins, which are a little bit and a long way short of my daily-goals respectively. I was super unfocused when I tried to grind and then the stars server issues have just hit again so I think I'm going to call it a day, go chill out for the rest of the night and hopefully sleep away the sadness and wake up feeling better tomorrow.
The one good thing I've got going for me is that I'm staying pretty disciplined with my other goals. I'm sure tomorrow will be a better day.
-----
H1 - I think this is fine and just unfortunate against basically a rec. Could maybe go a touch bigger on the turn to set up a more comfortable river-jam, but it seems fine? There's a lot of hands we get value from. (TT-QQ, stuff like KQs-KTs, maybe even AK that somehow c/c turn, 88 and 66, and some 9x that doesn't river the nuts hero calling)
H2 - My PF 4b sizing here is a big mistake, born out of a lack of focus. It should be at least 20bb even though we're IP, and prob more like 22/23bb. As played, sb bet quickly and bb flatted very very quickly. I don't think we can fold against two randos? When bb calls so quickly I thought at the time that it make trips less likely and 99-QQ more likely as why would they act so strong by calling so quickly with someone left to act? Super annoying though that it doesn't just come 8 5 5 instead. So many spots like this in the 35k hands I've been playing this limit. If even just a few boards had fallen less aidsy then I wouldn't have a graph that makes me look like a complete noob.

Yo. Struggling for motivation this last couple of days, and then when I do grind I'm starting to feel a bit tilted at the fact I think I've been running pretty awfully in general in the 40k or so hands I've done @ 10NLz.
Obviously this is an awful way to think over a sample so short (especially as I spewed a lot) and it culminated in me tilting as badly as I have at the limit tonight. Don't actually think I lost more than a couple of BI in total but it was a great start, followed by things just not falling right for me in a bunch of 3bet-pots and me getting tilted that instead of being up 4 or 5 BI I was hovering around break-even.
It's an awful way to think and it cost me big time tonight, so although I have a weekly volume goal that's going to be a fail, I'll just try to play some short sessions the next few days and focus on tidying things up again.
I was really enjoying the grind last week and playing very well for the most part. Need to get back to that mentality fast. Had a rough couple of days mentally so won't put too much pressure on myself in the next few, will just focus on trying to play myself back into solid form.
-----
H1 - Horrible turn. The right cards and I'm probably getting stacks.
H2 - Weird hand. Not entirely sure why I opted to flat instead of the more standard 3b. As my hand is so under-repped I have to call flop 3b and turn.
H3 - Not sure what I should be doing pre in these spots. Is cold-calling OK? As played I was so happy when the reg snap-checked river until I saw their hand.
H4 - Close to calling here vs rando. Was tough coming up with bluffs though, maybe 54 or some stuff like 75cc. Doubt a non 2pr AXcc bets river so strong but obv stuff like KQcc get there.
H5 - Horrible river. I think I butchered the sizing as there aren't many 2pr in their range. Not sure I should call tbh because of that. If they don't have many 2pr and it's rare that they'll raise those then it's hard to see what we beat, other than a fish spazzing.
H6 - I think overbet-jam is pretty good on this river, vs a rando at least.
H7 - This is where the tilt began...
H8 - ...and this is what it lead to...

So ye it's been a bit of a horror show since I started back. I think I'll get to the end of this week and assess whether it's worth dropping down to 5NL for a short while as having a stagnating bankroll is getting pretty tedious.
I'm not going to lie, it's a huge shock to me that I haven't just printed at 10NL. I don't think it's arrogant of me to say that I believe I'm technically better than most players at the level, even the regs, but obviously when you're making these stupid plays and decimating your winrate it sounds a silly thing to say as the guys who aren't as capable of thinking things through but are capable of not going nuts every now and again and spewing stacks will have a better winrate.
Hopefully the rest of the week will be better and the idea of dropping down for a bit won't seem so tempting.
