Side note: isn't it interesting how the family emergencies end when he's losing? He's lost what...over a third of his liferoll and it's all quiet, but I'll bet anything that if he had come home yesterday and told his wife he had won 5k there would be a desperate situation that urgently needs his financial support when he wakes up.

Crazy Home Game

It started off a wholesome night with friends... Just me, my wife and a good mate going out to the city for Korean BBQ on a Saturday night. We had good food, a few drinks and a wholesome discussion about life and good memories. We even joked about how it feels good to have an innocent night away from gambling.

But then we finished our meal and realised: due to the current lockdown restrictions, all the bars are closed. You can't simply hang out at a venue. You can only go there if you're sitting down and ordering a meal.

We thought about going back to my house, but it was too far away and a bit too quiet/depressing. So then we came up with a brilliant idea: why don't we go to a home game, buy in for the minimum, play ultra nitty, exploit them for free alcohol and just basically use their apartment as a venue to chill? What could possibly go wrong...

We Ubered it to the apartment and it was super nice, one of the cleanest and most luxurious apartments I've ever been to, with a breathtaking view of the city. The setup was neat too and fit 2 full tables.

We found out it was a $1/$3 game with $100-$500 buyins. Something about the mesmerising view of the city lights really starstruck me, and we quickly ditched our plan of buying in for the minimum and put down $500 each.

The host greets us with a beer and a wide variety of spirits, and on the very first hand, I raise pre with 99 and flop a boat vs trips to double up my stack.

I'm feeling good, my body is loose, and I'm ready to keep playing. Our plan of playing like nits is completely over at this point, as we join in a round of straddles and even begin to double straddle, triple straddle and request more bomb pots.

As this whole process of degeneracy plays out, my wife is sitting in the kitchen, talking to the girlfriend of one of the other poker players. I'm secretly happy that she's distracted, because at this point, I feel like gambling more than anything.

We smash down beer after beer until we're triple straddling most hands: $1/$3/$6/$12/$24 is a pretty routine thing. At one point, we even get a quintuple straddle going: $1/$3/$6/$12/$24/$48/$96, which leads to a 5way all-in preflop where some guy with K2o flops bottom pair and scoops a $2600 pot.

After midnight, the buyin increases to $1k max and we immediately top up. It gets to around 1am and I'm in for $2300, but I have a $2k stack, so I'm almost breakeven.

Then I decide to flip for $1k. The only one that has the balls to flip with me is my friend, so the rest of the table watches on as we put a pile of black chips in the middle, get dealt 2 cards face down, the runout comes 22378, I confidently flip over my T7o... And my friend flips over QQ.

Within 15 mins of that all-in flip, I've gone from almost breakeven to being stuck over $3k and walking away, broke and frustrated... A few hands that led to that were:

Hand 1: Failed bluff catch

$1000 effective
Blinds $1/$3/$6
BTN raises $20
Hero 3bets $80 SB with 76dd
BTN calls $80

Flop ($170) Qs 5s 5c

Hero bets $60
BTN calls $60

Turn ($290) Qs 5s 5c 5d

Hero bets $150
BTN calls $150

River ($590) Qs 5s 5c 5d 6s

Hero checks
BTN bets $275
Hero tank calls $275

Spoiler:
BTN shows Q9hh (boat)
BTN scoops a $1100 pot

I was kicking myself for this bad hero call... My opponent has like no natural bluffs there, and it's silly to think that he would thin value bet a flush there.

Hand 2: Jamming 33 pre

Some context: this happened immediately after me losing the $1k flip to my friend. Villain is my friend.

$1000 effective
Blinds $1/$3/$6/$12/$24
Folds to UTG+1
UTG+1 raises $75
Hero 3bet jams $1000 UTG+2 with 33

Spoiler:
UTG+1 snap calls $1000
We run it twice
UTG+1 scoops a $2k pot with TT

...and this is how you give $2k to your friend in 2 mins.

Hand 3: Last hand of the night

$750 effective
Blinds $1/$3/$6/$12
MP limps $12
SB limps $12
UTG limps $12
Hero raises $80 UTG+1 with Ad 9h
MP calls $80
SB calls $80

Flop ($255, 3ways) 6h 3d 2h

SB checks
Hero bets $80
MP folds
SB raises to $240
Hero calls $240

Turn ($735, HU) 6h 3d 2h 9c

SB jams $430
Hero snap calls $430

Spoiler:
SB shows 22 (set)
We run it twice but it doesn't matter because we're literally drawing dead.
SB scoops a $1600 pot

After this hand, I was done. I knew I was drunk, playing horribly and it was time to go home.

A sick part of me wanted to rebuy and just flip to get back to even, but I rushed away from the table before those dark thoughts could overcome me.

I caught an Uber home with my wife around 2am and drunkenly explained to her how I just lost $3300 of our money that night... Not my proudest moment.

Now I'm sitting in bed with a hangover, thinking to myself damn...

Some unlucky setups there 6b. Not much you could do differently, sometimes just gotta ride out the bad variance.

Hands 1 and 3 look like your normal play.

At least the flip in a vacuum was neutral EV, hand 2 is just ridiculous. You were so tilted that flipping wasn't degen enough for you, you had to make an even worse decision? Did you even stop to consider how much hand creme / crab meat in EV that is costing you?

There wasn't really any mark at that game tbh.

Thank you. Yeah a bit of bad variance in huge pots is all it takes.

Surely not? You fold 33 blind vs blind? You fold 76s SB vs BTN? You fold A9o when it limps to you and you can either check or raise?

I liked the view though. But yeah, good to always keep your mind down to Earth and not drifting off and dreaming of the high life during a poker session.

Yeah probs too deep to jam 33 pre. It would've been fine if I had like $600 though, I reckon.

It’s pretty easy to understand why wife thinks it’s no big deal asking for a couple of hundred to feed her poor family in Thailand when her husband thinks it’s no big deal getting drunk and doing $1k flips.

She is married to him, she probably understands what’s going on wrt to poker much better than we think and (rightly) assumes that any money that goes into the hands of her family is just money that isn’t going into the pockets of random strangers.

He left $3100 up (in for 1.9k, out for 5k exactly). So together, we almost broke even.

Except a $1k flip is neutral EV. I'm not actually losing any money in the long run by flipping.

It's only 0EV if you don't take into consideration risk of ruin. If you are flipping a decent % of your roll like this, you run the risk of becoming underrolled and not being able to make money in the future. Even if the flip creates a good image for you, it's still probably -EV because being underrolled means even the best player in the world can go broke easily once they hit a simple downswing.

Edit: And unless you have minimum 20bi, you are already underrolled, so you shouldn't even be playing that high in the first place, nevermind flipping.

Hand 1: Folding pre could be fine. 3betting could be fine also. Turn seems like a clear check/fold to me. Seems like 1 of the worst turn cards to try to continue bluffing. He's got tons of Qs and he's never folding them now. Probably not folding 77-TT either (although this is more of a large guess given that I obviously know nothing about the guy).

Hand 2: Clear pre-flop fold to me. Because of all the straddles stacks are awkward. Way too short to call this sized raise, but too big to shove.

Hand 3: Clear check pre. As played, fold to flop check/raise.

EDIT:

"and it's silly to think that he would thin value bet a flush there."

It's not just that he wouldn't value bet it on the river; it is impossible for him to have it. He's not calling there on the turn with a flush draw on the Q55 5 board. I'm assuming a modicum of poker ability there.

He might be decent when he's able to play 5+ tables at once online but can't adjust to the boredom of live poker and ends up doing super stupid stuff.

6bet doesn't risk with anything. He is massively overrolled for 1/3/6/12/24/48/96 games and 1k flips. He hasn't updated latest numbers, but I believe he still has like 5k$ liferoll (thats even more cash money in AUD). Besides, these flips help to generate image of a whale degen, instead of solid reg, therefore this action generates edge.

You're folding Axss vs a guy who just flipped 1k blind and 3b shipped 33 pre? I sure as hell aint LOL. Anyone with a modicum of poker ability would def have some Axss there ott A9ss-AJss/AKss that didnt 4b pre at the very least vs a tilted af fish, id call even lighter than that
