Poker... Means to an end or the beginning of a new life? Poker... Means to an end or the beginning of a new life?

INTRODUCTION

What does poker means to us really? The chance to have the means to pursue your dreams? The chance to earn a lot of money and live life itself? The chance to work and play at the same time?

For me, it's all of the above. I've always wanted to start up but never quite find the finances. Poker creates a possibility for me to pursue my ambition. It may not happen now, but it stills provide for a better odds than lottery.

Then I asked myself why do I even want to start up at all? Money is but one of the many reasons, but definitely not the only reason. I wanted to live life itself. The knowledge that if I put in the time and effort to grow my start up, it could stabilize itself and sustain my lifestyle in the future.

And of course, I love poker. If I can make my passion become my profession, I believe I will go very far. Eventually anyway... But this passion of mine carries a risk. The risk of losing money during a bad month or a bad year. To devote full time commitment losing money is never a good thing and is easily an excuse for people around you to shun/label you. Even fellow poker players love to label each other. Usually they're beaten by a "fish", "gambler" or a "degenerate".

Being Asian, poker has always been viewed as gambling, thus a vice. With the government intention to curb remote gambling activities, I may lose a way out of the rat race. As a player who is in the downswing, my defense for poker would be taken as self denial.
