I don't all the time, just a higher % of the time than most of others I guess. And that is done by playing more, and just continue to question the game, that's how I've won the money I have anyway. What works for me may not work for others. But by playing more, you gain more and more experiences and things that have happened in the past, therefore are able to work out what are the optimal or higher ev plays to make in certain situations vs different players

Grind/Coopah

Your forum article is amazing. Great volume, great hand analysis, great graphs, thanks for sharing your adventure! May i ask how you initially built your bankroll when first starting poker? Would you recommend any particular game(s) for intermediate players looking to grind out there first 1000$ profit online? I am predominately a live cash game player looking to expand my action into online poker.

Thanks. By beating people at school and by then learning at nl50 and progressing upwards gradually. Got a good rb deal also when i used to play nl50--nl200 as it made up quite a lot of my profit. Idk about you personally as you have given me no information on what games you play but just play the one's you think you'd have the edge in, and whatever your BR will allow you to play. Don't play a game where you could go bust even if you think you have big edge.. etc. From your location i can see you are from Canada, i don't know much about sites that side of the world but i know some Canadians who play on the ongame network and i like it there..

I fancy downloading some new books on my Ipad for my holiday, if anyone has some good ones with a title and author (preferably about poker/vegas etc) then if you could let me know here in the next 10 hours that would be great.

Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler. Really deep ****. Not an easy read thou. You have to invest alot of time into it, if you want to get something out of it.

I have maybe 100-200$ max I can allocate to poker at this point in my life.

I play micro stakes MTT's predominately on stars and live cash games at casino's/house games usually NL50-NL200. I have a good feel for the game live, I've read a few poker books, but struggle with online play especially in cash games. I have recently purchased pcp as I feel a hud will assist at plugging leaks in full ring and short handed online cash games.

I will look into ongame network for cash games, I find microstakes cash games on Pokerstars have alot of regulars these days and games have become increasingly tougher/nittier there.Or you have fish to stupid to fold any two cards, I find my mental patience is pushed to the limit trying to grind a roll here..

were you always predominately a 5-6 max NLHE specialist, or when you first were learning the game and playing NL50-200 were you playing full ring, mixed games etc? Did you first start with one site specifically and then grind a roll there and move it onto other sites, or did you spread your money evenly across many sites to get a more wide field of opponents to play against?

Please update us with a graph soon, all the best with your goals. Until next time,Run Good

Keep beating the live cash games then. Sounds like there is more money to be made in that then there is depositing $100-200 online.

I wouldn't even say i am a 'specialist' now... Nevermind when i first started playing! I'd consider someone a 'specialist' if they made very very few mistakes. I think i make a lot, but i guess i just make less than most of the other regs. Never played mixed games, and never played fullring. Always 5-6 handed! I started playing on various different sites , just wherever i 'got lucky' really, as i had no clue about strategy when i first started to play..

I know i was going to but my gf has my laptop , but there reallly has been very little increase in no. of hands since my last graph. I guess will just have to wait until after Thailand now... (sorry)

I recently read the Banker and the Suicide King, true story about Andy Beal, multi multi millionaire (owns a bank) taking on the best live HU players in the world a few years back in Las Vegas. He insisted on playing at such high stakes the likes of Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey and co had to form a group to pool their money together to play him. He was a fish to start and lost a ****load but won some back. Good read.

In a way Vicky's book is like Andy's, only backwards. She won a large sum of money at first, but lost most of it back.

Since leaving university....

(1) are your parents still supportive of you?
(2) Do your friends treat you any differently?
(3) Do you feel like you miss out on things, friends have the 9-5 job go out and on the rat run day every etc. and it's something you can avoid doing.

Update:

Just arrived in Koh Phangan, weather is nice, thankfully, despite going to Thailand in their rainy season Full moon party tomorrow!

On my laptop I took with me, never signed into my Grind4Money acc on here, and i'm not sure what email i used so can't access that until I get back, so i'm using this acc.

Regarding poker, i've played a little bit in the morning when i've been jet lag, I've made $11,000 on the nl500 zoom tables on pokerstars (just because I had like 4k vpp's to reach supernova) and I think around $15k on my normal European sites/stakes.

I started it today on the plane from Bangkok to Ko Samui, i then realised I am the slowest reader of all time. My gf was reading it at the same time as me and kept asking to turn the page by the time I was on like line 6 of 25. I actually never read books, I think maybe 2-3 in my life and they were at school for exams.

1) Yes, although they think i have a lot more money than I do , so i think that helps

2) No, i dont think so. But the way I treat them has changed as time goes on...

3) I definitely don't feel like i am missing out on getting up each day to go and work for someone else , have to do set tasks and talk bullsh*t to people at work just to get along with them etc. I much prefer just grinding , even if i was to work 70 hours a week grinding 10 tables compared to 40 hours a week in a 9-5 office job and get paid the same, i'd still think i'd choose the 70hours of grinding which i enjoy doing.

Maybe one day I will go into trading as that was my dream when I was younger, but we will see.

Hope all is well with everyone

Glad to hear you're having a good time.

Could you elaborate on #2?

#3: Do you feel social skills decline? Friends meeting up after work for drinks etc. and you're sort of out of the loop as they're talking about work. If they ask you about work it'd be weird to talk about the sums of money or being 2 outered for a $10k pot . Or generally you're pretty active socially and it doesn't get in the way.

Have fun.

Great thread and especially hand analysis.
Do you think you could win more by trying to get to showdown more with winning hands? I understand having a certain style where you win without showing down, but can't you balance this a bit more and play a little more trappy sometimes? (Sorry if this is a stupid question)

I'm annoyed because i wrote out a long reply to this yesterday and now i've realised it didn't post!!

So i'll reply again but will be shorter this time..

Regarding #2:
I think just for example 3 1/2 years ago when I first went to Vegas i only took 1 friend, then a year later I took 8 friends by doing a rake challenge set by a site (60k in 4months), then as i moved up from medium stakes to 5/10+ I could start taking 12 people, then last year was 15, and in January for my 25th i think there are 20 of us going. This will be the last trip as i've decided when i'm 25 life gets a bit more serious and it's time to grow up etc And i guess they just have noticed 4 years ago i couldn't buy things like my car which i only bought last year, and other things i've wasted money on more recently...

Regarding poker social skills and #3:
If you only play cash games online (as opposed to a poker player who plays many live tournaments / year and travels with friends etc and go to the player parties and so on) it may be said that the social side to the job isn't the best. As far as my social life goes with my poker all i have is a skype group with 20 or so people I play with, and we have some banter in that and is fun to paste some funny hands etc.

I am one of those people who enjoys my own company a lot, I can easily chill and just listen to music all day if i wanted to, so me putting in long hours grinding alone in a room is no problem with me. I am also in an email thread with all my friends who have a job in the city so that helps the social side to it also I guess.

Regarding the conversations about their work, if they ever spoke about it, it would be for a very short time only. When i see my friends for drinks , say once every 3-4 weeks, we'd all get drunk and meet up to watch the football, talk about women etc, so their work never really pops up considering I see them on a Saturday 95% of the time. Never really mention the sums of money i play for in each pots, although if they (rarely) ask how my day/week has gone, i'll just say the truth. They've seen me do some 25k spins on roulette and place high 5 figure bets on football before so me playing 1-5knl poker games won't really be high for them I think.

I think what it comes down to for me is : I enjoy playing poker online, even if i break even (possibly even lose) i still enjoy the game and competing with other players, add that to the fact that i'd hate to wake up and go to a 9-5 job, the 'worse' social life isn't a problem. Also, i think quite a lot of relationships in 9-5 jobs are slightly fake, made with people you wouldn't be friends with outside work, and only speak to to get the day done quicker, progress upwards in the company or so on. But thats just my opinion!

Thanks. Hmm, i see what your saying... Maybe if i bet $200 into a pot of $1.2k (and get called everytime 100%) on the river to get called instead of an overbet of $1.4k or something then i'd make $200 extra. But if i get called 1 out of 7 times I make that over bet (in this example) i'd make as much money as i would if i bet $200 and got called everytime. I have to then balance this in with my bluffs, i wouldn't be able to successfully bluff enough if i bet $200, and as overbets rarely get called, it lets me bluff successfully higher % of the time. That's just a random example, but I try to overbet those players who i think fold more to big bets on diff streets with bluffs, and overbet those who i think call more, and so my betting sizes change accordingly to my read on the villain. Ultimately though, i play each hand in the way i think my green line will go up the most, whether it's by achieving a high red or blue line, it doesn't matter. If i play a hand a certain way, i may use this to play future hands the same/differently and lead to higher green line in the future...
