Background
Hi everyone, my names Alex and I'm a 27 year old MTT pro thats currently living in Las Vegas. Originally I went to school for computer science, where I ended up getting my masters degree and going to work on wall street, but I was only there 2 years before I quit in order to go full time in poker. So far MTTs have been fine for me, and I've had no problems beating the midstakes, but after ~2 years of staying at the same ABI I feel like I've stagnated and am really only grinding enough profit to pay bills. I had a discussion with some friends/people in my study group and decided that the best way for me to get better at the game, make more money, and move up stakes is to play more cash games – and I think the only way to really do that is to dedicate myself to becoming a full time cash game player.

My plan is this: take January and February as a test to play 50k+ hands of 50NLz and, if it seems like I'm a winning player at this level and higher, I'll move up to 200z. I'm hoping this thread will give me a way to document my progress, “publicize” my volume/study goals as a way to keep me accountable to them, and maybe serve as an alternative form of motivation.

Results/Graphs
I spent some time in both NJ and Canada I was beating the games for somewhere around 8-10bb/100, which seems meh for MTTs, but I feel like my game has come a long way in a year and I'm very confident I'd be winning much higher than this rate if I went back.

Now in Vegas I've been playing the majority of my action on Ignition and had a better winrate over a pretty small sample:

50NLZ has gone well for me so far, although over a similarly small sample. That said I think the sample is probably big enough to determine that I am winning here.

As you can probably tell, Volume is always tough for me, I'm not a very motivated person in general.

I've also played ~50 hours of live poker this month and usually have 1-2 reg tables on WSOP NV open (no HUD/tracking) while I play, so this is a little less than half of January's profit. The hourly rate isn't that great, but it would be theoretically would be enough to live off of if I really got that desperate. Living off 50nl in the US doesn't seem like a great situation, and I'd probably just go get a real job/go back to MTTs if I end up not being able to cut it at 200nlz, but it is something of a safety blanket.

Goals
  • 30+ Hours of play per week (live + online)
  • Establish myself at 200z before the WSOP = 100k hands of 4bb/100+ winrate
  • Establish myself at 5/T live before the WSOP = Not sure how to quantify this one, but I assume once I'm rolled for the game and feel comfortable playing it
  • 1hr PIO study for every losing day

TLDR
I've been a full time MTT player for about 1.5 years and I'm starting to transition to a cash game player. I'm hoping that having a PGC thread will help keep me accountable for volume + study goals that I seem to be too lazy to meet most months.

To everyone that made it this far, thanks for reading and GL at the tables.

Week Recap

Overall I played 22 hours (missed one day for my birthday) so it wasn't awful volume-wise, but it really should have been much better. Hopefully this week I can get around the 30-35 hour mark. Results weren't great either with tilt/bad mindset making me cut a few sessions short, resulting in an overall awful week:

Online
It was a pretty breakeven week in terms of EV, but ran ~6BI below that.

Live
I played 5 hours of 2/5 (Planet Hollywood) and 3 hours of 1/2 (Caesars) and all sessions were losing resulting in ~8 hours of play for a -$1155 result. Not ideal.

Hands

I think I played fairly well this week, and most of the losses were a result of unfortunate run outs:

Live:

I played two “big” hands that were losses:

2/5 at the Bellagio (wasn't this week, but was the day before I started this thread):
UTG (~400) limps, I raise CO w AKo to 25 with $500 behind, sb snap 3b to 80 (covers significantly), UTG calls the 80, I rip it in, sb snap calls (concerning), and UTG says “ok, whatever” and tosses in the rest of his chips.

SB was a boomer type that was competent enough to not have only KK+ here, but he definitely wasn't raising as a bluff. In the end I dont think theres any other way to play this with the UTG dead money. I kind of jokingly told the sb player that “I think you have me crushed” and he said deadpan “I know I do.”

The board runs out 8 high, and we lose to the TT of sb.

2/5 at PH, theres a straddle to $20 on the button:
SB limps, bb limps, UTG limps, I make it $110 with JJ in MP, SB Jams $425 total, I call and lose to his KK. He had just raised AA two hands earlier so I didn't think this was always nutted, but maybe it is in a straddled pot. Even if it is a super tight range we have to call given price. Whatever.

Other losses were from random 1/2 shenanigans where I pay off a river minraise where I think theres a slight chance I could win and obviously dont.

Study
My plan is to study the most common spots that come up on a bunch of board types in PIO, so that I can familiarize myself with the spots I run into the most. First up is sb vs btn 3b pots - I whipped up a spreadsheet to take notes on the different board types and how PIO plays each range so that its easier for me to commit to memory.

Other than PIO, I've been watching Tyler Forrester videos on RIO since he plays a lot of cash on ignition and seems to have a good understanding of population exploits.

Summary
Even though it wasn't a great week I don't think I butchered many hands aside from the Qd hand, at least from a 50z skill level perspective. Overall my graph is still pretty solid and I hope to put in 30+ hours this week (ideally with multiple days of playing 5+ hours) and will be on track to shot 200z at the end of feb.

Thanks all for reading.

Thanks m8 - as far as my old job the pay was great and I was good at my job, but the work life balance was non-existent. For right now the freedom poker provides is worth pay cut, but I get not everyone thinks that way.

Week Recap
I'm super happy with the volume I played this week – I put in about 30 hours of online play and had one short (3 hrs) live session. I've started playing the 100NL reg speed tables on ignition and Global, but I think the best combo is putting volume in on WSOP (actual rakeback) + one of Ignition/Global. I'm pretty happy with my quality of play as well as my study habits, as I put in 3-4 hours of PIO this week and watched ~4 hours of RIO videos in my free time. Although I didn't run all that great I'm pretty optimistic about getting where I want to go.

Online
I think overall I've kind of been in a breakeven stretch at 50z which I think I'm on the cusp of breaking out of. Looking at my overall graph it seems like I've been getting destroyed in redline compared to the past month of play, so I'm hopeful this isn't me overfolding but just getting bad runouts.

50z Graph this week:

My 100NL experience has been pretty positive, I don't feel like its overall touger than 50z and the spots are pretty easy to identify:

Overall, my 50z results have me somewhere around 8bb/100 which makes me very optimistic about my progression:

And in case people are interested, heres the week recap (Rake is theft):

Keep in mind I've been having the 4 Ignition tables up and 2 tables of Global/WSOP up which I cant track, so my hourly should be ~50% higher than this. I cant wait to get on WSOP and actually get rakeback, I'm basically getting raked $20/hr at 100NL which is an atrocity, even something like 20% rakeback would be insanely +EV.

Live
I played one session at Caesars, where the only notable hand was getting in AK vs JJ for $192. The runout came AQJxx and I lost $265 on the session, oh well.

Hands

The bad
I dont think I get to x/r this vs a pot open and pot otf, I think x/r river is best on an ace and all in all I shoulda lost more

Study
I've finished my study of sb vs btn 3b pots on a handful of boards and I think the next spot to look at is either btn vs bb or sb vs bb. Not sure which, but I'll be hitting the RIO videos and PIOing one of those spots this week.

Summary
I've pretty much already shared my overall graphs for both stakes that I've played – but I don't know how much more 50z I'll play given how soft 100NL seems to be. Hopefully the EV line turns around.

Thanks for reading.

Got smacked pretty badly with the flu so I've been out of commission for 5 days or so. Pretty frustrating given that I felt like I was getting my volume issues figured out and then suddenly I can't play; but it is what it is.

Thanks m8, for the river I think we probably have to call but I don't really know. We dont have many better hands (aside from KT) and I would convince myself a perceived rec would overvalue a hand like AK/AJ/A9 if they 3b this riv. Plus when he checks back turn I dont see him having many hands that we lose to.

Finally felt strong enough physically to play a session, and got about ~4 hours of 4 tabling in on Ignition. Ran solid and ended up just under 5 BI.

Here's 100NL overall with my microscopic sample:

Need a lot more hands before I can prove anything about my wr but there are tons of weak rec/fun players at the tables so I think I am definitely winning here, but obviously not at 14/100 lol.

Week Summary
I really underestimated how awful the flu is, and I was incredibly tired all week even though I wasn't exclusively stuck in bed. I basically spent this week playing very little poker and sleeping 12-14 hours a day, even when I was awake all I wanted to do was sleep; but the good news is I finally feel like I'm breaking out of it.

Online
I got very little volume in, but managed to play ~5 hours on Sunday where I had a solid (+2.5 BI) session of 100NL on ignition and a roller coaster 50NL session on WSOP where I ended breakeven but ended up winning slightly thanks to rakeback.

Hands
Obviously I didnt play much this week so there's not many post-worthy hands, but overall I feel like the major hands I played were either poorly played or a straightforward enough spot that it didn't matter. I wasn't thrilled with my overall level of play but there weren't enough tough spots to make it that big of a deal, I guess that's also part of running well.

1)This seemed very thin, but the guy also paid it off with ace high. Pre I think is debatable but I wanted to play hands with the limper so I think calling is fine.

2)I dont think I played this hand all that great. Fairly certain I'm supposed to x/c flop, but it was a 60vpip fish so I just tried to shovel money in with an overpair. Turn is where I got lost, and I hated checking, but its probably right and I somehow ran into a hand he felt like folding.

Summary
Incredibly bad month as I was sick with the flu and couldnt play 14 days, and the other 14 was filled with low volume and frustrating poker. Im about 30 buyins below EV on Ignition and it feels like I'm running worse on WSOP (which doesnt store hh). I realize thats a pretty standard downswing/stretch of runbad so I'll stop bitching about it after this sentence, but its very frustrating to know that if I was running at EV I'd be comfortably shotting 200z, which was my goal.

Results and Graphs
As mentioned it was a low volume month so here's my Feb recap:

15k hands is obviously horrific, but again I'm playing probably 50% more than this counting WSOP tables. 46 total hours for 14 total days of play is pretty unacceptable though, my mental game (both work ethic and tilt management) are the worst parts of my game by far and it's showing. I am up 3 buyins on WSOP though.

Hands

The tilters

Obviously wasnt thrilled to see the turn pair but I would expect 2p+ to raise flop a significant amount and I'm never folding. I also wonder if I should be overbetting this flop.

Study
I've been putting regular hours into PIOing BTN vs BB spots and have 2 study groups that I run sims with, hopefully it shows results soon.

Hopefully this isn't too much of a bad beat bitching post, but obviously thats the core theme and I hate that its all I think about. Hopefully it turns around.

Not going to do a normal update post but it's just hit me that WSOP is 3 months away, and my play + volume the first two months of the year has been awful - I've always struggled with volume, but I need to really grind during march madness. I dont have any definite plans yet but I'll have some sort of volume goals for live + online hours during MM. I hope I can convince myself that the work I put in now grinding it out will be rewarded during the summer with being able to play higher BI MTTs + cash games.

Summary
About a week ago I decided I would play an MTT alongside cash so that I would have a reason to stay at computer and put in solid volume. One thing led to another and at this point I've switched back to playing exclusively MTTs – its the format I enjoy the most and its hard to say no to FTs playing for thousands as compared to grinding 50z. I think my time playing cash was incredibly useful, as it let me explore a bunch of pio spots and gain a much better understanding of solver strategy. I'm by no means a crusher but I feel confident at beating 100NL on Ignition/WSOP and my postflop edge is significantly higher now than before grinding cash. That said, MTTs have gone exceptionally well for me recently and the combination of running hot and small fields has resulted in somewhere around 4-5k in winnings this week, which has done wonders for my motivation and confidence. Best of all I'm grinding at a level I never had before (17+ MTTs a day, 6 days a week) and loving it, which, in my opinion, was the ultimate goal anyway. Besides all that March madness just started and WSOP is on the horizon (more on that later) so I will probably hit the live cash streets, but I really am enjoying the online MTT grind and am eager to keep it going.

Only one of the sites I play on (Ignition) allows me to run a HUD, and the tournament summary imports are always wrong so I only have the bb/100 graph for this week which isn't terrible, but could be better. Also sunrunning is fun.

Also here's my WSOP pokerprolabs, where you can see my upswing as well as whats left of the downswing that sent me on the cash grind a few months ago.

Study
I've basically been watching RIO videos every day, and whenever a coach has a decision I try to think what I would do in their spot and see how their thoughts differ from mine. Also one of the best aspects about making so many FTs is the chance to grind ICMizer sims a ton, and being confident in making those slightly +EV shoves that feel awful to make in the moment.

WSOP Schedules are coming out and I'm starting to put together my plans. I'll probably try to sell enough action to let me fire ~$15k in buyins (so probably selling 7-10k), which is a bit anxiety inducing as I've never sold that much action before and I don't really know where to start. Anyway, I'm sure things will be more concrete in the coming months and it'll work out for the best.

Thanks for reading.

Another solid few days with 8 FTs in the last 2 sessions, only two wins but still good enough to be up ~$1k. Graphs continue getting better too:

I have had a very weird run lately, since my last post I'm down 600 on WSOP but +1.5kish on Ignition which is “good” but I've had quite a few high equity Fts and crashed out in something like 7th every time. Since my return to MTTs two weeks ago I'm up ~4.5k but I feel like I'm squandering opportunities at FTs; like there's a finite amount of rungood I have left in my upswing and not being up 20k is going to come back to bite me. That said I've been ICMizering literally every close spot post FT and I'm really confident that I'm making the right decisions in the moment, just not being put in positions to capitalize on others' mistakes.

Graphs

Ignition graph since 3/10 – my bb/100 seems meh but I'm happy that my redline is almost BE, I think thats where playing cash/running PIO sims has helped me most (that said 10k hands is nothing).

WSOP graph. Keep in mind rebuys/addons aren't included for some reason so the numbers aren't completely right.

Study
More ICMizer and RIO videos, which have become my standard. Nothing really more to add I suppose.

Also a group of friends just finalized their plans to get an AirBNB for WSOP like a block from my apt, I really can not wait for the summer.

Thanks for reading.

March Results

I'll put up graphs in a little bit, but first "month" (3 weeks of 3/10-3/31) back to MTTs in the books and I ended at +$4769.09. Decently solid number and I'm definitely looking forward to next month.

Summary
Essentially 4/10 was the first 30 day period of MTTs back and by my count I finished it with a decent +5498.28, which makes it +729.2 since my last post. Thats some solid profit but in April I've put in 5 sessions and taken 6 days off which is obviously horrible, and I can pretty much attribute it to me ruining my sleep schedule (which I do every month at some point). Basically I feel much more motivated if I wake up at a reasonable time, but I have awful sleep habits and constantly find myself unable to fall asleep at one point or another during the month which ends in me waking up when its dark out. Either way I'm glad to be back on the grind and I've started my quest to put in an hour or so a night (after MTTs) of grinding cash so I can hit diamond by WSOP, and I have a solid mix of 100/200NL up and I'm very confident in my ability to beat the games, which are surprisingly soft. The MTTs + Cash + Rakeback have me excited for the numbers I can put up this month, hopefully I stick with it.

Graphs
Been getting slapped on Ignition as of late so my bb/100 has dropped a bit, I wish results would import to PT4 but ev graph will have to do:

Still running decent on WSOP, but still have yet to cash a $109 lol:

Also not pictured is like ~$1800 in cash games + rakeback since WSOP doesnt let us save HH

Future
I've got my WSOP schedule sorted out and its only about 13k in buyins, which should be a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to that grind. I'll probably end up selling 40% of that to friends and then putting the rest of it up in the marketplace here but I have no idea what markup I'll sell at (1.2?). Markup is a hot issue right now and I don't want to be seen as gouging people so if anyone has opinions on a reasonable number I'd love some sort of input. I imagine I have a great ROI in live MTTs but I've never sold publicly before and I don't want to be tweeted into oblivion so I'd rather not **** it up.

Anyway that's all I've got, thanks for reading

Decent Sunday, bricked a lot on Ignition but had two decent results on WSOP:

Won a $600 WSOP Satty:

And came super close to a 5 figure score:

Up $4605.33 so far this month (not including the $600 ticket), I hope it keeps going

Been getting dunked on Ignition so far this month and stuck about 1k on that website since 4/1, but I'm up about 4.5k on WSOP this month though so still an OK month so far. That said I've probably made ~15 FTs and only had one win, so it definitely feels a bit bittersweet.

Ignition Graph (since 4/1):

WSOP Graph:

In terms of study I watched Sam Graftons series on turn overbets, and then ran a few sims of my own to try and really grasp that concept. I think just as an overall leak in my game I probably am not sizing big enough with value or bluffs and these sims have really reinforced that for me.

Had a solid day with each of a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place for a +$2365 day

Overall on the month I'm +$6945.67 which is crazy considering how little volume I feel like I've put in. Really stoked that the studying/solvers/sims are paying off.

Still sunrunning, wanted to play a short session today and got 2nd in the 22r on BOL for another +$1300. I'm also still running at 16bb/100 on Ignition which isn't great, but good enough.

+$8164.87 for April
