Cafe boulud I've heard mixed things about but I wanna try it. I've went to Daniel Boulud's restaurant Daniel's in New York and that was awesome. You got any other places you like in Toronto ?
First about shoto, yes you have to book in advance, actually I booked it the day before I got really lucky, around 10am to noonish if you refresh you can snag cancellations, also this month its slow, maybe because of the cold or something. If you want a party of 3 or 4 its a lot harder. There is only one menu at shoto, so yes.
CB NY is a 1 michelin star if I recall correctly. CB Toronto is not recognized in that way but the head chef is hand picked by Daniel Boulud, it has the same recipes and many of the other chefs are transplanted from CB NY.
All in all, its my favorite restaurant in the whole world pretty much. Toronto isn't really ready for a balling restaurant per se so the prices are almost half of what they would be elsewhere. So it's actually a value restaurant even though most people don't see it that way. If I lived in yorkville I would be coming here every other day. **** now I want some lobster bisque lol.
Another cool thing is that CB stepped up their game recently, they have special apps and entrees from time to time that are much higher priced where they just go all out and show off their A+ game. As someone who would be going to CB even if the price were double, that's just gravy.
One time I went and the manager came out and we talked about the restaurant for a while. They made a special dessert not on the menu for me and my friend, and he gave me his card and followed me on twitter (LOL) and told me to make sure he knows about it every time I go to CB. After that I feel like everyone in the place knows my name and that plus the service sends this place way over the top for me.
Any other places in TO? Hmm, I mean it all depends on the mood. I like Zanzibar over upper brass because its more chill, and you can get half bottles. Black hoof raw is very casual and you share the food but its kind of out of the way, good for dates though. Same with barchef (v intimate environment kinda), though kinda upset they pulled the peking duck club sandwich from the menu (seems like a small miff since its a place to drink not to eat, but that sandwich was really ****ing good).
Also Hemmingways is standard,... I donno... I could list a bunch of places but each place has their own niche kind of so it really depends on what you want to do. Some of the best times I have had have come in the most unlikely of places, eg. I would never walk into a vegan shack (near st. andrew) .. way too hipster for me, but someone dragged me there and it was really good. So maybe just try **** out.
