Awice, thats a great explanation of why a tipping society might be less efficient than a non tipping society. But if you dont tip in a tipping society you are taking advantage of the lower costs and labor standards without paying your fair share. You could give a great argument of why public transportation should be free, but if you dont pay your fare on the subway youre taking advantage of everyone else who is.
K, im done
The difference is that free rider behavior is punishable by law for the public transportation problem, and not for the tipping problem. The free rider theory was created exactly to highlight the problems in creating a culture where people have the choice to pay or not pay for a certain service or not and benefit from it regardless. The theory is there to say "hey, this thing here doesn't work like this, this system will be exploited by free riders", it doesn't exist to say "hey, if you don't pay for this thing you are a free rider and a bad person". In theory if free riding isn't punished you're a sucker if you are not free riding. But because there are social consequences people still tip even though there are no legal consequences.
What do you think would happen if tomorrow public transportation tickets became optional and not buying one would not be punishable in any kind and the new stance of the government would be "if it does not yield enough money to run it, it is clear that the public does not require public transportation"? There wouldn't be any public transportation left if that happened.
Obv I agree that if you live in a tipping culture never tipping is a bad thing. But I can deff relate to Awice, having to tip large amounts of money on your wins to pay the dealers is a ****ty thing to be socially forced to do.
