Living up to big expectations - A journey in poker and trading Living up to big expectations - A journey in poker and trading

Hello all,

I am an economics student and semi-long time pokerplayer. I´ve been playing poker seriously for about 4 years, with decent results. I guess I am sort of the classic young pokerplayer: Always been good at math, not to interested in getting told what to do and just a general search for freedom and being financially independent. When I finished high school in 2013, I had some problems finding out what I wanted to do next. I had decent grades, but could definitely done alot better. These three years had alot of poker in them, and thats was a problem for the general learning curve at school. Me and two other friends, who I met for the first time in high school, started hanging out and playing alooot of poker. We would skip classes all the time, to the dismay of our parents etc. After a while they cooled down on the poker front, but I kept going strong. I decided to not go to UNI the first year after high school, so I enlisted in the norwegian navy. This was a controversial choice for me at first, my father kind off told me, uni or navy.

He has always had high hopes and expectations for me, which has been both good and bad. We have a very close relationship, and I respect him alot, both as a businessman and a person. Anyway, I started the navy grind. I could never hope for a better and more welltimed year at this part of my life. I learned to take care of myself, found myself in new situations with new people and was lucky enough to meet the love of my life. I will go deeper in my navy-year later in this thread if people are keen, but cliffs are: Spent 2 months at "recruit-school" where I learned the ropes etc, got transfered to the HQ of the navy in Bergen, was selected as a machinist to travel from Bergen-Azores-Dominican Rep.-Panama-San Diego-Hawaii on a naval exercise, and met my current gf.

I created this thread to keep a diary of my day to day life, which includes school, poker, trading and just random life events. I will try to work alot on my game this year, and hope to share my results with the guys following this thread. I also do alot of trading, but thats not to relevant here I guess, as most of my stocks is on the norwegian stock-exchange. I think im in the perfect part of my life to give poker a real shot and will do everything to succeed. My current situation is nice and comfortable, I live in a nice apartment with my gf, I go to school 3 times a week were I study economics, and I probably play to much poker. My main game is PLO, stakes from PLO25-100. Last time I checked my HM, I think I played about 500k hands of PLO in 2015. I also play alot of mixed games, up to 5/10. I also like to mix in alot of MTTs when I feel like it, and some SnGs too. I will post graphs, pics of apartment etc later in the thread, kinda just wanted to get this thread started.

Hope all of you have had a good start to 2016, and I hope you will enjoy this thread! NB: (English is not first language, so sorry on beforehand.)

Will post alot more pics and graphs later, my girlfriend is flaming at me for taking bad fotos etc, so she will be in charge of that from now on.

Some goals for 2016:

- Retain good grades at business school. Work hard and steady, no skipping lessons and working my ass of two weeks before exams.

- Win 60.000 dollars across all different sites.

- Keep picking good stocks, doing good research before purchasing big quantities. Very hard to set a goal here, but I think staying ahead of "Oslo Børs" ( Norwegian stock exchange) is a good goal. I did this with quite a good margin last year.

- Be happy. Work out atleast 3 times a week, keep in touch with old friends and start playing soccer again.

Decent first day after starting this thread. Started the day of sweating the stock exchange, as I made some purchases yesterday. The start of the year has been fkn awful for the economi in Norway in general, with the declining of the oil price being the major factor. Me personally shorted some of the major players in the oil sector, and made a decent profit, but other than that ive been keeping a low profile in the oil/energy sector.

In the poker realm, it was a good day. No school today, so played alot. Put in about 3k hands at PLO100 zoom, and winning around 3BI. Also played some MTTs, finished runner up in a 10r PLO 6-max for 400, the 2r PLO 6-max currently 8/9, and 9/15 in the 8r PLO 6-max. Love the 6-max PLO rebuys. Hoping to finish the day strong, the 1000+ dollars days is always nice.

Decent day of trading:

So, playing a full sunday schedule today, with some cash on the side. So far its been going great, starting of early with two deep runs, currently 10/14 in the NLO h/l 6max PSK and 4/38 in the PLO 6-max PSK and 9/16 in a 22 PLO h/l. Its like 700 dollars up top in both, but with bounties it should be 1k+ for winning. Won 11 BIs on PLO50 ZOOM also, played around 3.5k hands. Lets take it down! Gl all playing today!

Small sunday recap:

- Finaltabled the 27$ NLO h/l and got 3rd for 380$ + 40$ in bounties.
- Had a massive stack in the 27$ PLO PSKO, but lost a massive hand for the chiplead in brutal fashion. Will post/discuss that hand later, definitely interesting. Busted in 14th for 80$ + 30$ in bounties.
- Won 15BIs on PLO 50Zoom and ordinary tables. 4.5k hands and around 1k VPPs I think.
- Bubbled some sats to Sunday Million and TCOOPs.
- Played my A+ game in the 27$ 8-game, but got this fkn setup with 11 left for a top 3 stack.

I am by no means a stud-expert, I actually think its my worst game in the mix. The action went like this: He limped in, player next limped along, I completed, he called and the player in the middle folded. He c/r 4th, and we got it in on 5th. I one outed the ace, but still pretty gut-wrenching on 7th. But whatever, it happens. Have definitely run good in this tourney before. Contemplating regging the rest of the red tournaments, the Big 162, Weekly and Daily Horse and the 162 6-max.

Hope all of you had a good sunday, small update from me: After the last post I regged alot of MTTs while grinding some mixed game cash on the side, without any significant success... Ended the sunday up like +1.200 dollars which is respectable I think. I think should have ended the session alot earlier, but its easy to be smart afterwards.

Went to business school today for a lecture, which was semi fun. We only have 4 subjects this semester, where math and finance are the fun ones. Came home early and decided to reg 3 PLO h/l MTTs for fun, and ended up final tabling the Omania 16.50, but busted in 6th after beeing top 3 for a long time, which sucks...

I want to post some graphs to give you guys some background info on my earlier days in poker, so I created a player group on SharkScope. I was kinda shocked about my MTT volume honestly. I see myself as a cash-game player primarly, but I still play the occasional MTT and I certainly did in the past...

I will try to find all my cash hands from HM1 to post my all-time cash graph, but I changed computers a while back. Anyway, please give a shoutout if any of you guys are following this, it would be nice to hear that im just not writing this for myself...

Hey! Yeah finding trading/stocks is like finding poker for the first time. Just work hard and be smart with your money and you will do alright. I guess im kinda boring, I only trade with stocks that are listed on the Norwegian Stock exchange and I usually own them for a long time. I did some daytrading with currencies back in the day, but its too volatile for me.

Good afternoon everyone.

So, after a nice ending to the weekend and a nice start this week, I decided to use my day off playing some poker. I woke up 8.30 and went straight to my computer to make everything ready before making coffee and breakfast. I acutally turned my pc off last night, which I usually dont do. When I sat my usual 4 tables of PLO50zoom, and regged 4 MTTs, I noticed my HUD wasnt starting automatically. I still use HM1 and have never had any problems with it, before now. This tilted me a lot, and I suspect this is because I turned off my computer and Stars did some kind of auto update. But whatever, I guess I just have to buy HM2 or PT4.

Anyway, the session started off pretty good, I built nice stacks in all the MTTs I played, but lost 2-3 BIs on cash. Ended up final tabling the 27$ PLO Turbo, the 13.5 PLO h/l and the 33$ PLO h/l.

Unfortunely, they all ended pretty bad. Got in KK43s vs q99x bvb in the 27$ PLO for top 3 chips somehow, but lost and busted in 6th for 170$ish. The 13.5$ was going awesome from start to FT, but had Elabuga, who I marked as an elite reg, on the FT and got it all in on river bvb with flush and a decent low, but he had second nut flush and a better low. Pretty sad. The 33$ only had 21 runners, which means 3 paid. Got down to 4 handed being 2/4 with avg stack being 12bbs at the bubble. Potted the sb w AA78 and got flatted by a guy who I regarded as a decent reg. Flop comes 1082, I pot and he shoves j1093 no suits and rivers the 7 for a scoop. Preeetty horrible call by him pre for 20% of his stacks with a pretty horrid hand. Whatever, shi* happens. Will go for a workout/spa after doing some homework, and will very likely play a big schedule tonight with some TCOOPs mixed in. Gl all!

Sup guys, small update: Been such a "nearly" week for me... I think I had around 9-10 different big oppurtunites to make some big bank, but some run bad and maybe some questionable plays by me put a stop to such a thing. Had some sweats in TCOOPs, with the biggest being the 7.5r$ PLO 6-max 2xTurbo. Got my starting stack of 6k up to 60k in the rebuy periode, and then I realised that there was an 30K add-on, which basically makes my spinup "meaningless". Ended up in 80th place of 2k runners, busting versus the sunrunner Schtopol whos been winning 2!! TCOOPs already.

In other news, I've been so lucky being invited to play in a huge livegame every week. Ive played there two times before when I came with a friend, but its a private underground game, which makes the politics insane. The reason I got invited is because I sold alot of dollars on Stars to one of the guys running it, so this will be a nice shot to earn some big bucks. Last time I played I sold 50% of my action because the straddles are so massive, and with the original blinds being 5-10 the swings get massive. I will play tomorrow, I think I will bring 2x bullets of 5k and sell 25% to a friend outside poker. It will be exciting to see how big my edge is, last time there was basically just people who played 5k hands live max, and thats it. Wish me gl, will post pics of my stack and updates!

Also, shotout to Sylvestra who read this thread and sold me a PT4 key for a cheap sum, already liking PT4 more than HM.

So, been a couple of days since I updates this. Been busy with school and other stuff I guess, not to much happening in the poker realm. I want to do a monthly recap at the end of every month to keep track of my goals and look at what things ive been doing well and things I can do better. So I guess this will be the first one.

Pokerwise started of with a bang, I think I was up 4.000 dollars the first week of january and had aspirations for a massive month. I hosted some parties right after that in my flat and things got a little crazy the weekend after new years, so I cooled of on the pokerfront. Started at business school again on the 13th, but it has been pretty chill on that front, for now. Started playing alot again on the 15th ish, and that day set the tone for the rest of the month. I really had a "nearly there" two weeks of playing, and that gets pretty sickening when you miss out on a big score time and time again. Decided to get my PT4 setup to grind cash exclusively for the next couple of days, and that went very well. Will post graphs later, but as I recall I won 21 BIs in 10k hands with a winrate of 22bbs/100. Also took down the daily 8-game, final tabled a bunch of medium sized buyins and had a massive sweat in one of the bigger mixed tournaments. Anyway, I finished the month up about 7.500 dollars which is respectable I think and on pace for my 60k/year goal.

On the health and life side of things I think I did an okay job. Started the first week of working out 4 times, then 2 the next week and 3 for the last 2 weeks. A long way before im back in the shape I was in when I finished up the navy, but im getting there. Goal is to be 90kgs again and run 3km under 10mins. Its crazy how poker and bad eating habits can just destroy a good and solid form/shape. Anyway, I think im on the right track and will give it my all to get back to resonable shape.

Anyways, will post PT4 graphs and some hands later. Gonna watch Manchester United vs Stoke now, hopefully they will pull through. Please give shoutout if you guys are reading this, that helps me with motivation to continue to write! GLGL Peace

Nice thread!

Im in a very similar situation, same age, med school, in search of freedom and financial success trough poker and investing. Will be following this closely! GL!

Subbed. I've been looking into trading some options in addition to poker. Looking forward to reading some trading stories as well.

So here is my PT4 graph for the last 4 days. Mostly PLO 50 ordinary tables and some deep ante. Still working with my old laptop to recover all time cashgraph, but cant promise anything with these computer skills... Anyway, forgot to post this gem which happended yesterday. Played a 16.50 NL tourney (what was I thinking...) while grinding cash. Ended up plowing through the field, and for a minute I didnt dislike NL MTTs. Then this happened.

Im currently 3/7 in chips, with 1k uptop. I open for min, he 3b and the bb calls all in. Im contemplating just flatting since he can be using ICM as pressure to 3b light, therefore have a wider range which KK crush, and then play postflop. His 3b stat over 300 hands was just 1.2%, so I decided he has alot of value which he will 3b/c. The runout summed up my MTT month, but w/e. Going to start a big session now, aiming for 4k hands and maybe some PLO MTTs on the side. Almost forgot, one of my goals is SuperNova for 2016, and I am currently on pace with 9k VPPs. Dont know how smart or how much value it really gets me, but its def +ev with me playing so much cash already. Anyways, gg gl boys!
