I've been super boomswitched at PLO these last couple months and I've decided to document it here for motivation.

A little about me: I quit university to play pro poker over a decade ago, had a good run in early 2010s playing high stakes 2-7 Triple Draw, running up $500k one year but eventually lost a lot of it. After that I was playing on and off throughout the decade but pivoted into another career. I never quite got poker going again as I used to but when the pandemic hit, I decided to dedicate a lot of time to doing it properly again.

It took me a while to get steady profit again, I spent a lot of the year 3-5k down, playing 100PLO and other games, but eventually got my **** sorted and ran up 18k in a couple months, before going on mad tilt at HU 200PLO and losing a lot of it back in a couple days. I think I lost 10k in two days basically, playing badly versus tough players. I took a whole year off until around November last year, where I ran up 10k or so again but lost half of it back again.

My latest run began in mid-February where I decided to grind it out 9-tabling Zoom 25PLO to start with. It was a good chance to work on my game and discipline, but also I decided to abuse PartyPoker's 80% rakeback on Fastforward on 2x boosted hours. You basically can't lose with that kind of RB, and can probably do $30-40/hour even if you break even in the game (which I did for a few weeks, but I was still building my roll by making $800/week from the cashback scheme). Let me tell you, playing this kind of way was gruelling as hell but I'm glad I did it.

Eventually decided to step back into higher stakes, mostly because of my confidence of my own game and how poor the players are. I'm definitely the best player I've ever been, and a lot of it is just discipline and mental game rather than any meaningful study. As a sidenote, I weirdly attribute to being better at the game after such long breaks to other card games (I've sunk 1200 hours into Slay the Spire) and board games (I play a lot of different games on BoardGameArena and learning to optimise them quickly is a really useful skill).

Since moving up again I've been running like God. I think I've only lost one or two big sessions out of a few dozen. The standard of play at 100 and 200PLO is v v low - people basically don't value money at all and don't seem to care. They just push buttons, snap call spots they shouldn't and get themselves into poor situations repeatedly.

My goals are basically:

- to avoid the self-destructive cycle I've gotten into previously, where I run up loads and then have a few huge losing sessions that make me quit for ages
- stay good at the game
- stay boomswitched

Graph since I restarted - I've made about $5k in RB on top of this

Also my last few sessions where I got boomswitched:
