HUSNGs from the very beginning! HUSNGs from the very beginning!

Hi all,

About two month ago, I started trying out HUSNGs. I had almost zero experience in HU play but found the format very interesting and I wanted to learn more.

I read some posts here on 2+2 and got inspired from the likes of Captain Mustard and jackxer and their “Poker Goals & Challenges” threads.

Started playing Turbo HUSNGs at the $11.50 and $23 level with some early success (very small sample size though). Also I have tried a hand full $34.50s lately with mixed results.

My goal is to continue working on my game (joined HUSNG.com after reading about it here and recently had a very much appreciated first coaching session with ChicagoRy) and to apply a proper BRM for my skill level.
I will also try and up my volume as I only play 10-15 games per day at the moment. I have a full time job but most days I have a few hours to spend playing this great game .

My Short Term Goals and guidelines:
- Play 500 HUSNGs during March (16 per day on average)
- Move up to the $34.50 level when I reach 35 buy-ins.
- If reaching BR for the $34.50 level and fail my 5 buy-in shot I will move back down to the $23 level.
- Continue to work on my game and to have at least one more coaching session this month.

I don’t want to look to far ahead as I am still very new to HUSNGs so the long term goals will have to wait awhile but obviously making some $ is always a great motivator .

BR at the moment stand at $912 with a $50 Stellar Award 39 VPPs away. Let’s get that run good going so I can reach $1208 and a shot at the $34.50s.

Graph so far since I started on January 18th 2011.

Hopefully I can get some feedback and tips from you guys and if other beginners out there have any questions I will try and answer to the best of my abililty.

Thanks!!

Yesterdays session ended with 30 games played and 15 won.

I was not to pleased with my play and I felt I was not 100% focused on the task.

Result wise I got off easy and I won 15 out of the 30 games I played.

Due to a small MTT cash and release of the $50 Stellar Reward the BR went in the right direction .

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 62 (34-28). 12.4% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $107

BR: $947

On a side note, I will be rejoining my gym today after a long break. I can really use some energy and the lazy days are now over .

Thanks Benny!

I have started to experiment with playing 2 tables to be able to get more volume in and I hope that it will not affect my results in a bad way too much.

Had a somewhat swingy session of 28 games when I came back from the gym but it ended up pretty good where I won 8 of the last 9 matches.

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 90 (51-39). 18% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $211

BR: $1051 (Nice to break the $1k mark and hopefully it will lead to a shot at $34.50s sooner than later).

Thanks Exo!

Another session done and a small win booked. I found myself down early in the majority of the matches today and sometimes I do take unecessary/borderline stupid lines early on. I will go through todays games and hopefully I can adjust since it can be mentally tough to have to try and fight back every match.

On a positive note I am very happy that I don't tilt nearly as much playing HUSNGs as I did playing cash games. Obviously this might change when my first real downswing come but it still feels good to be able to control my temper better in HUSNGs than in CG.

Todays session: 26 games (15-11).

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 116 (66-50). 23% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $273

BR: $1113

Absolutely horrible day and I can't blame anything but my own bad play. Hopefully there will not be too many days like this in the near future.

I spent $11 on the supersatellite to Sunday Million and managed to win a seat. Not much to say about the Tourney itself. Set over set and my dream about the Gallardo was gone .

I have 5% of a friend in the Million and with 4900 left he is in 60th so I'll keep my fingers crossed for a very deep run for him.

I'll just forget about todays session for now and review the matches tomorrow.

13-19 Today.

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 148 (79-69). 30% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $117

After reviewing my play from my last two sessions, I have decided to stop multi tabling for now. I realize that I have so much to learn and I think that the optimal way to go about it is to concentrate on one HUSNG at a time and really think about every hand instead of worrying about volume.

I will still keep track of my volume goal for March but it is not a priority.

My friend finished in the top 700 of the Sunday Mil so my 5% turned into about $100 and it was surely a welcome addition to my BR after the last session. Well done of him to make it deep in both the Warm Up and the Sunday Mil .

BR: $1030

Do you guys have any paricular pre session routines that you find work good for you?

Also, what if you start of losing 3 or 4 matches, do you keep going or do you take a break and start over after a while?

Sometimes I find that I am in a really good mindset if I start out winning a few matches and if I instead lose a few in the beginnig I rather think about getting back on track results wise which might cloud my judgement in many spots. Any thought?

Used to be a HUSNG reg on tilt, playin the 4 persons shootouts.

and i had a massive sample and it was very obvious that multitabling was so bad for me. Definately didnt feel i was learning as much or picking up on villians patterns. And also profit was way higher 1 tabling than 2-4 tabling.

note: multitabling Full ring didnt have the same results so i do think its just HU multitabling is a bad idea

Thanks for your input rorrrr, appreciate it.

I feel the same way. At this time multi-tabling HUSNGs tend to lead to me making my decisions mostly based on my own hand strength instead of pickin up patterns in my opponents play, applying hand ranges and paying attention to the board texture.

Went back to 1-tabling today and I am happy with the way I played for the most part. I ran about 5 buy-ins below ev and ended up -$28.50 down.

To be honest the result does not bother me as this session felt much better than the last and I am confident that I made fewer big mistakes today.

From my next session, I will start posting a few hands here and there to hear you guys opinion/thoughts on things .

36 HUSNGs played today and I went 18-18.

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 184 (97-87). 37% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $88

Played a very short session just now and went 5-2 after losing the first to games.

Severly distracted in the first two matches from watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBHv0pO94JQ

Had to close down youtube and concentrate on the games haha .

Joke a side, played ok and held up in the spots were I got it in good so not too much to say.

March so far:

HUSNGs played: 191 (102-89). 38% of volume goal for March complete.
Winnings: $147

BR: $1044

Another break even session. Played 16 games (8-8).

Ran close to 4 buy-ins below ev so I was not too much I could do and I am ok with how things went.

There are still a lot of players that love to take crazy chances when playing the $23 and it feels like they dont even care to fight for the match sometimes (I guess they exist on every level but I am sure it become less and less common the higher the buy-in is).

So far I am having the biggest difficulty adjusting to agressive players and I think I tend to freeze up a little bit to much in those matches. Even if I think a 3- or 4-bet can be +ev I dont always feel comfortable postflop and that sometimes lead to me folding hands I would normally play.

Hopefully, as I play more and more matches, I will develop my game and be more knowledgable in how to combat all types of players.

I think I will try and watch a couple of videos on HUSNG.com before my next session.

I have a question regarding a hand I played tonight if you guys dont mind. My opponent had been fairly active and had been flat calling many of my button raises prior to this hand but most often given up to my CB.

Do you guys prefer to just shove it in on the flop when the opponent reraise?

After I played the hand, I kinda felt like a shove in that spot would have been better as it could have looked as a flush draw if villain had an 8.

Do you ever slowplay it in these spots?

I agree that he will never fold this hand but and thats perfect.

However, at the time I was thinking if villain could fold a lone 8 without back door flush draw to a shove on the flop.

If I thought that he might fold an 8 to a shove would that justify a slowplay or does it really just turn my hand face up?

It feels very good to break even after a session like this. I had my opponents in big trouble many times when the money went in but I guess this is just the way it goes sometimes.

Played 21 games and won 11.

10 buyins under EV is tough! Still good results. U can really take it easy on ur volume goal for march and focus on 1 tabling and giving every game ur full focus and attention!

Thats very good advise and I have gone back to 1 tabling for the last couple of sessions.

Its kinda rough to run bad but surprisingly it has not bothered me at all yet. I still really enjoy playing these matches and as I ran above EV in the my first 300 matches I guess its just evening out .

Like you say, focusing on every game and ever decision is key now and I am sure that it will help in the long run.

Ship the weekend now so I can get back to the grind!!

At the moment I am doing constant deposits into the coming run good account and today I only played 5 matches as it was impossible to win one .

The last two matches was a bit brutal:

Aslong as you keep playing good poker it'll even itself out. You'll have a dad where they'll all hold and you'll rake in the money! lol good luck!

        Thanks man!

On average, over my rather small sample size (561 games), they last 9 minutes. These are Turbo however so if you play regular speed they will naturally last longer .
